Native, Transplant or Snowbird, you’ve just got to love the fact that for the next several months, the weather in Arizona is close to perfect! Anything outdoorsy sounds inviting.

I’m especially excited about catching a few Spring Training games at the Goodyear Ballpark this season. (The Reds and the Indians have a number of locally hosted games at very reasonable prices). I hope you’ve got plans to enjoy some R & R and rejoice in the longer, warmer days.

With each spring comes new growth and for Estrella that growth is budding in the form of devel-opment. I know you’ll join in my excitement as we see new businesses begin to “bloom” in our commu-nity, including the announcement of CantaMia, the new active adult community that will soon establish a new standard of innovation for adult living in our neighborhood.

As part of our own line-up, we’ve spotlighted a local professional carpet cleaning service, Randall Carpet Care, to assist with your spring cleaning needs as we slide into the new season. In this issue, you’ll

also read about creative ways that our neighbors have extended themselves, stretching personal limits by opening a new business, entering a healthy competi-tion or sharing their artistic talents.

What steps are you taking to reinvent yourself? Whatever it is you’re up to this season, I’d like to hear from you. Whether you’re organizing a new fitness group or celebrating an anniversary, I’m interested in what’s going on in our community. Please drop me a line at [email protected] and share the ways you are living better in 2010, while aspiring to accomplish fresh goals in this new season.

Sure, it’s easy for me to elude my ambitions to get outdoors, get moving, and enjoy the fantastic temper-atures. The drudgery of work, bills, and those dread-ed upcoming tax deadlines are lurking on every page of my desk calendar, just as your demands could be the demons inhibiting you. Regardless of what trips us up, spring won’t wait. We’ve got to make our “me time” a priority. Thankfully, there’s no jacket required for the next (oh, I don’t know) eight months!

Megan Ragone and her twin sister, Madison, were staying at their Grandma’s house recently while their parents were out of town on business. It was during this stay that Megan witnessed her Grandma watching the news coverage of the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Megan couldn’t help but watch, too. “I remember seeing all of the people barefoot, trying to walk through the rubble and on top of the broken glass,” recalls the Estrella Mountain Elementary School fourth grader. “They were bloody and they needed help,” she said. Megan told her Grandma, and then her parents upon their return home, she wished that there was some way she could help the people of Haiti. After a brainstorming session with her fami-ly, and some computer help from her dad, Megan put her desires into action. She was going to help provide shoes for the people in Haiti—lots of them! The plan was born to partner with the “Souls for Soles” program. She first gathered her sister and a handful of other fourth grade friends. Dad went to work designing flyers and the girls quickly spread the word throughout their community, posting flyers on mailboxes and at their school. They also summoned their big brother, Michael, who is a student council member at their school, to help spread the word of the shoe collection for the needy people in Haiti. In a matter of several weeks, and with the help of Megan and Madison’s parents, the shoe collectors arranged drop off points, includ-

ing a large bin in their own front yard, as well as drop-boxes throughout the schools and community. Megan and Madison’s parents would fill up the back of the family car with shoes and bring them to The Sport Chalet, with whom they partnered and organized the “Soles for Souls” collections sending, literally, hundreds of pairs of shoes to the needy people in Haiti. “It makes you feel really good when you do something to help people,” said Megan. She and her dad emptied the large bin in their front yard twice, due to the overwhelming response of community donors.

“Souls for Soles” collections isn’t the first time Megan and her family have assisted the needy. Her family also sponsors a young man in Haiti, named Michael, and has done so for the past thirteen years. Michael was chosen by Megan’s family simply because he has the same name as her older brother, Michael, and he was in need of sponsorship to enable him to attend school, as well as have adequate food and clothing.

Megan Ragone has certainly touched the lives of those in Haiti, while working as a team player with some pretty close friends, to make sure that others have what they need in a time when they need it the very most. Thank you, Megan, for helping make this community and this world a bet-ter place in which to live!

Have you ever wondered what you can do to nurture the inner musi-cian of your child? Music Together classes can help the process. Music Together classes offer a lively, but relaxed musical environment. You and your child can explore musical play and child-centered instruments in 10 weeks of classes. Receive a Song Book, a CD of semester’s music that you use at home, and a DVD about how children learn music. Find out how much fun this research-based music and movement program can be. There is a new youth ministry forming in our community. Sunday morning service is scheduled in the Starpointe Youth Center from 10:30 am to noon. Andy and Vee Ragone, six-year Estrella residents, have been leading a youth group locally for the past two years. Andy graduated from Phoenix Seminary in 1998 and has served as a youth ministry and cre-ative arts pastor in two different churches for ten years. Vee is instrumen-tal at relating with students. Together, they look forward to encouraging your teens. “We hope to make a positive impact in the lives of Estrella’s teens by creating a weekly venue, directed at reaching teens with a posi-tive message,” stated Andy Ragone. The program will utilize humor, a student led band, games and fun teachings. Students and families can

expect to have a good time while being challenged. This program is geared towards meeting the needs of junior and high school students, but all are welcome to attend. For more information, contact Andy Ragone at [email protected] or call 602-622-4400. Additional information on this youth ministry is also available at www.estrellainsideout.org.

eJ’s famous Banana puddin’

Estrella resident, EJ Smith has put his pas-sion for pudding to work! After years of making and tasting the sweet treat, the entrepreneur has opened his new business, EJ’s Famous Banana Puddin’ located at 506 E. Western Ave., Suite 101 in Avondale. EJ is excited about turning his secret recipe into his own personal success story. The story goes something like this, “My mom used to make the scrumptious banana pudding on the stove in our kitchen when I was growing up. It was, and still is, my favorite dessert. One day, she gave me the recipe and told me to make it myself. I took my allowance money and bought all of the ingredients. At twelve years old, I was determined to master the making of my favorite dessert. Years later, I became a Pop Warner football coach and agreed to make batches of it for football fundraising. Much to my surprise, the parents of the kids on my football team loved the banana pudding so much, that they ordered it all season long for their own families! The pudding fundraising produced equip-ment for our football team, pizza parties for the team and a banquet following our season.”

EJ reports that after his wife “kicked him out of the kitchen at home,” he was motivated to open his business in a commercial setting. At first, EJ’s pud-ding was a product only available to wholesale buyers, which included restau-rants in the West Valley and A.J.’s Fine Food Stores. Thanks to an Avondale program which provides aid for entrepreneurs who bring their businesses to Western Avenue as part of the 2006 Avondale Economic Development Plan, EJ was able to open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm. EJ’s Famous Puddin’ can be enjoyed in Estrella at first Friday fish-fry and barbeques, scheduled at Estrella Mountain Church on the first Friday of each month. EJ also invites you to visit him at the Avondale location or www.ejsfamouspuddin.com.

the vienna Boys choir

Let the breathtaking talent of The Vienna Boys Choir whisk you away through the magic of choir music on Friday, March 19 at 7 pm at Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Vienna Boys’ Choir strives to create an environ-ment in which boys can fully develop and realize their personal and musi-cal potential. Choristers learn to express themselves on a professional level in many different styles of music, and they are provided with the tools to set them on the road to - should they wish it - a professional career in music. The Vienna Boys’ Choir is divided into four sub-groups or tour-ing choirs. The choirs are of equal standing; the tours, appearances in Vienna, and recording projects are shared among them. Each choir has a choirmaster, and two tutors or prefects who travel with the boys. The choirs are named after famous Austrian composers associated with the choir’s history, Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. The choir still performs much of their music.

Classes are forming now for the spring and summer for children and adults! Please visit www.caa-az.org. Courses offered include the fine arts, creative writing and performing arts in dance, theater, music. They would love to have this program be an outreach to those who have begun to find out their hidden talents and have a place with quality instructors there to guide them into discovering what makes you, the student, unique. The spring classes include Quilting with Sue Bailey, Acrylic painting with Debra Goley, Blooming Design with Melissa Doucette, and Textured Wall Art with Lynnette James; all ladies are residents of Estrella! Classes will be held at Estrella Mountain Church. Sign up to day to reserve your spot at www.caa-az.org.

The featured artist this month with classes beginning March 1 in the Quilting arts is instructor Sue Bailey. Sue is an Estrella resident and nationally known master quilter, offering her expertise in creating a Butterfly Watercolor Quilt. Sue is a native Texan and has been a lover of quilts all her life. Her (Great) Grandma Stewart’s quilts provided warmth and comfort on a daily basis. However, it was not until living in Aruba that she became interested in quilt making herself. Her friend, Carol, had no idea that asking her to help quilt a church raffle project would lead Sue into the world of teaching, pattern designing, and shop ownership. After studying with many world renown quilters, Sue finally accepted a teach-ing request while living in Abu Dhabi and has been bringing the world of quilting to persons in many parts of the world since 1990.

Sue has been published in the AQS publication, American Quilter when her quick watercolor technique was featured in the spring 2003 issue. Sue’s love of working with many fabrics has brought her recognition for her quilt “Desert Stars” and “Life is a Puzzle” on many occasions at quilt shows. Her signature patterns include, Heart Wreath (a quick watercolor

technique), Texas Charm (a map of Texas done in a color wash technique), and Sue’s Cabin (Sunbonnet Sue variation on a rectangular log cabin block). You can visit her website at [email protected].

To register for this class and others, including an entire summer in the ARTS for kids and adults, visit www.caa-az.org.

handyman Xtremeproject s.t.a.r.

Kurt and Dee Hanke of Handyman Xtreme are pleased to announce a new monthly service treat and this month, are revealing Project S.T.A.R. (Success Through Aligned Resources). Handyman Xtreme is family owned and operated right here in Estrella Mountain Ranch. Founder, Kurt Hanke, started the company in January of 2008 in North Scottsdale. After meeting his wife, Dee, Kurt decided to move the operation to the West Valley, specifically, our community of Estrella. “This community has so much to offer in terms of warmth and hospitality. The North East Valley is beautiful, but the closeness of the Estrella community is some-thing special that I felt right away,” says Kurt. “We are so happy to be a part of it and have made one of our primary goals for 2010 to enrich the lives of others right here in our own beautiful community of Estrella.”

Handyman Xtreme, which includes Kurt and his family, will dedicate one day each month to helping a member of our community with house-hold repairs they badly need but cannot afford to have completed. They will provide their labor free of charge and seek donations where possible for materials, parts and supplies. This is how it will work:

Those in need (or someone familiar with their situation who is nominating them) will contact Handyman Xtreme by letter, email, or their website.

A committee composed of community/business partners and Handyman Xtreme will select the monthly recipient by a vote and/or lottery.

When a recipient is determined, depending on the scope of assistance required, they will coordinate with partnering businesses in the commu-nity to complete the work. This is intended to be a community effort, bringing the community closer together as neighbors and to involve as many resident businesses and individuals as possible.

Several other Estrella businesses have already come forward to join Handyman Xtreme with Project S.T.A.R. and anyone else with a spirit to help those in our community is welcome, whether it is an entire company or an individual. Kurt and Dee have a vision of Project S.T.A.R. growing to the point that allows for multiple families to be helped and perhaps even

larger projects like fixing up an entire property, where the whole neigh-borhood/community gets involved. They can be reached by emailing [email protected] or by calling 602-773-1973 (direct). Their main line is 1-877-5 FIX IT UP or visit www.HandymanXtreme.com.

this month’s tip from handyman Xtreme

Hard Water and Your Dishwasher...The majority of our plumbing calls are in one way or another because of

the extremely hard water we have here in the Valley. Hard water can wreak havoc on automatic dishwashers and this simple four-step trick can save you a service call and make your dishes sparkle again!

1. The heating element in your dishwasher should be black between cycles (dry) and about the diameter of a pencil. If it is chalky white and/or thicker than where it comes out of the dishwasher floor, we’ve found our hard water problem, Houston! Calcium and lime has built up on the element and seriously impaired its ability to do its job.

2. Simply pour enough distilled white vinegar (acetic acid) in the bot-tom of the dishwasher tub to completely immerse the heating element and let sit for two days, or until the build up has completely dissolved.

3. Run the dishwasher through a cycle without dishes; instead place 2 glasses upright in the rack full of vinegar.

4. Now to keep your dishwasher this way, we recommend placing 1 upright glass of vinegar in with your dishes every other load and use a simple inexpensive powder detergent with a minimum phosphorous level of 6% (e.g. Regular Cascade)

If you are experiencing any other problems with your dishwasher, call Handyman Xtreme... of course! At Handyman Xtreme we provide World Class Service with Neighborhood Availability. This means Estrella resi-dents are not sacrificing expertise or quality for convenience.

Estrella resident and student, DeAnthoni Wilkins, has been selected to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference on March 14 through March 19 in Washington, D.C. This leadership conference will allow out-standing students from across the nation to study the tradition of leadership in American history as well as practice leadership skills essential in develop-ing academic excellence and strong leadership potential. The attendance of this conference is by nomination only. DeAnthoni was nominated by his teacher, Ms. Maureen Barndt, who recognized her student as one of a select group of students with scholastic merit, maturity and strength of charac-ter. DeAnthoni will represent 6th and 7th graders at Westar Elementary

School and will have the opportunity to visit a variety of museums, explore monuments and meet and learn from today’s leaders, as a means to ignite and inspire the imaginations of future leaders of America.

Congratulations DeAnthoni on this achievement, as well as your recent induction into Westar Elementary School’s National Junior Honor Society.

The teams qualified to attend Nationals at the Regional competition in November 2009, where they competed against 4A and 5A schools. The EFHS dance team took 1st place at the regional competition, beating some of the top schools in 4A and 5A. The cheer squad took third place. Both teams, totaling 24 girls, will compete at Nationals on Friday, March 26 in the preliminary competi-tion and both are hoping to qualify for Finals on Sunday, March 28 (Finals are aired on ESPN at a later date). “This is a wonderful experience for our girls. All of our coaches are very proud of the teams and all their hard work,” said the Head Spiritline Coach, Ms. Shannon Olson. “We are very excited to represent the State of Arizona, 3A sports, Buckeye Union High School District and Estrella Foothills High School.”

westar elementary nJhs service learning

When disaster hit Haiti, the Westar Elementary National Junior Honor Society and 8th grade students practiced their service learning skills and com-mitment to giving back by start-ing a shoe collection drive to help the survivors of the dev-astating earthquake. In only three days, the students collected over 450 pairs of shoes. On the first day alone, one 2nd grade classroom brought in 20 pairs. “I am so proud of my second grade students with the ambi-tion they have to help others,” said Dena Schafer, 2nd grade teacher and NJHS co-sponsor. first town hall meeting. the first of four annual town hall meetings will be held tuesday, march 23 at 6:30 pm at the starpointe residents club. the series of meetings was created in efforts of facilitating more open communication between the homeowners association, the developer, and residents of estrella. each town hall meeting will have an agenda of several topics revolving around current community issues of interest to most residents. further, each meeting will host an Open forum where residents will have

the opportunity to ask questions directly to the homeowner association and the developer on matters that may not have been included as top-ics on the agenda.

newland communities and capital consultants management corporation (ccmc) are dedicated towards fostering a positive and open working partnership with residents of estrella. Your participation at town hall meetings is crucial in that effort. we look forward to see-ing you at our first meeting in march.

For The Love of Petsit’s that time of year again when we all love to

open our doors and windows for some fresh air, or perhaps sit outside and take pleasure in the cooler weather or even enjoy a meal out on the patio. a constantly barking dog, however, can quickly shat-ter this relaxing image and make neighbors less than friendly toward each other. please be under-standing of your neighbors by not allowing your dogs to cry or bark in a manner which disturbs the quiet, peace, rest, enjoyment and comfort of the neighborhood.

Proper Pruningthe value of Pruning

in spring, trees are flush with new growth. in a natural setting, a tree does not require pruning to remain healthy. however, when planted in the land-scape around structures, streets and sidewalks, trees require some pruning for safety and aesthetic concerns. Before pruning a tree, it is important to understand why you should prune. here are some of the most common reasons for pruning:

• Remove dead or damaged branches

• Remove crowded, crossing or rubbing limbs

• Keep limbs from blocking sight lines or encroach-ing on structures, streets and walkways

improve tree structure and stability to avoid storm damage

tools for Pruning

having proper tools to prune your tree is important to the health of the plant material. limbs up to ½ inch in diameter can be pruned with hand pruners. long-handled pruning loppers can handle limbs up to 1 inch in diameter but a special pruning saw is needed for larger limbs. hand pruners and loppers should be of the scissor or bypass type rather than anvil type. hedging shears or power hedge trimmers should not be used to prune trees because they will not be able to make proper cuts and will damage the tree.

in addition to proper cutting tools, make sure you have safety equipment. it is a good idea to wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and closed shoes when prun-ing; additionally, wear safety glasses, a hat and gloves to help prevent an injury. unless you are a trained tree worker, avoid using a ladder or climbing a tree to trim it. most importantly, never attempt to prune a tree that is near a utility line!

Proper Pruning Practices

Once you are properly equipped with good tools and knowledge, you are ready to go to work. listed below are some general guidelines to remember when pruning:

• Do not remove more than 25% of a mature tree’s foliage

• Make cuts that leave a wound which can close properly to help avoid decay

• Do not prune a newly-planted tree dur-ing the first year, except to remove dead branches

• Cut back to the union of two branches, not in the middle of a branch

• Pruning paints are not necessary and can cause damage to your tree

• On large branches, use the three-cut meth-od to prevent bark from tearing down along the trunk (diagram on front page)

• If there is a good reason to prune a tree, pruning can be done almost any time of the year. use caution when heavily prun-ing just after spring growth as it may stress the tree.

lastly, and most importantly, Dlc recom-mends that you never top trees. topping is the indiscriminate cutting back of tree branches to stubs. this practice stresses and disfigures trees and creates hazardous, weakly-attached, new branches. it also creates an added maintenance expense as topped trees require more frequent pruning. for large trees or if you are in doubt, call a certified arborist. an arborist can determine what type of pruning is needed and provide the service of a trained crew with the appropriate safety equipment and liability insurance. You can find a certified arborist at http://isaarbor.com/findarborist/verifyarbByloc.aspx.

whO are the

people in your neighborhood

It’s a coin toss to decide just who wears the biggest smile in the Sambitos’ Fairways home. Is it Gabbie, the Maltese puppy, who was the first to bounce hap-pily to greet me at the front door on my prearranged visit? Or Bill and Kimberly, Gabbie’s “people,” who greeted me with warm smiles and sincerity that poured far beyond the foyer of their beautiful home? Regardless, all three wore ear to ear smiles as we discussed their relaxed and retired lifestyle that is anything but ‘retired.’

I first learned that Kimberly and Bill love to travel. The Sambitos fly as a trio, I was told and I’m imagining that Gabbie is quite possibly well on her way to obtaining a frequent flyer status of her own. When the three are ‘grounded,’ they enjoy golfing, volunteering, writing and reminiscing with friends, as well as spending time with their grown children. Between the two of them, Bill and Kimberly have five grown children; one in Monterey, California, two in the Bay Area of California, another in Prescott, AZ and one in Southern California.

Kimberly has been in the real estate industry since 1985. She was the Sales Manager for the Refuge in Lake Havasu, Arizona for the past seven years, where the couple lived on a part-time basis, until recently. She cur-rently volunteers for Prison Fellowship Ministries at the Perryville Prison in the West Valley. “Each week gives me a unique positive, remarkable couple of hours,” recalls Kimberly. Along with the other volunteers, Kimberly pre-pares a weekly Bible study, including lesson plans and workbook instruction, along with mentoring for incarcerated women, who are seeking ways to create a better environment for themselves within the prison and after they have completed their sentences. “The practical applications are rewarding

to both prisoners and volunteers,” says Kimberly, who has found many of the concepts presented from the bestseller, A Purpose Driven Life.

Bill, on the other hand, retired from the Marine Corps. as a Lt. Col. after 22 years of service. This includ-ed three combat tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He was also involved in Special Operations and has an impressive display of med-als honoring his military accom-plishments which adorn the walls of his home office. Bill subsequently worked as a manager in the tele-

communications industry in Northern California. He retired in 1997. In his free time, Bill gathered many of his historical experiences from the service and turned them into the basis of his fiction novel, which has been six months in making. He has an agent reviewing and has thought about self-publishing, but mainly writes for enjoyment and as a way to be creative with historical memories and research that he accredits partially to his service in the Marine Corps.

The Sambitos feel fortunate to live next door to their good friends, Nancy and Dennis. Nancy was Kimberly’s good friend in the Bay Area, which is where the Sambitos lived prior to moving to Arizona. Through a series of moves from both parties, Nancy and Kimberly lost touch. In 2005 when Kimberly was visiting the TW Lewis Sales Office in hopes of purchasing a new home in Estrella, she bumped into her dear friend, Nancy. The two, along with their husbands, ended up neighbors in the Fairways.

This year, Bill and Kimberly are working to improve their golf games! They are striving to maintain good health and keep up with their volunteer work and both hope that 2010 is a year of economic recovery for all.

Chocolate WeekThe third week of March is American Chocolate Week (really, it is). In honor of this occasion, this space

is dedicated to as many chocolate recipes as I can fit into my article word limit. Here goes:

Serves 15

1/2 lb bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

1/2 lb unsalted butter

6 eggs

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 cup flour

preheat oven to 400°f.

Butter the bottom and sides of 15 4oz ramekins.

sprinkle with sugar, tapping to remove extra sugar.

in double boiler, melt the choc-olate and butter.

Makes 10 dozen

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup shortening

3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed

3/4 cup sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon hot water

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans

1 (12 ounce) package semi-sweet chocolate chips

chocolate ganacheMakes 5 cups

1 lb bittersweet chocolate, chopped

1 pint heavy cream

5 1/3 ounces unsalted butter

Serves 16

cake

1 (18 1/4 ounce) package devil’s food cake mix

1 (4 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 3/4 cups water

2 eggs, beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

chocolate glaze

3 tablespoons cocoa

2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 cup powdered sugar

2-3 tablespoons hot water

cake: preheat oven to 350°.

grease and flour bundt pan,

whisk until thoroughly melted.

in a large bowl whisk together the eggs, sugar and flour until just blended gradually whisk the choco-late into the egg mixture until combined.

evenly divide the mixture between the prepared rame-kins, using about 1/3 cup for each. place the rame-kins on a baking sheet for 10-12 minutes until the tops are firm and beginning to crack and the edges are set. remove from oven and serve immediately with ice cream.

2 cups old fashioned rolled (or quick) oats

preheat oven to 375°f.

sift together flour, soda and salt.

in a separate bowl, cream together shortening and sugars; add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

stir in hot water, vanilla and flour mixture.

add remaining ingredients; mix well.

Drop from a teaspoon onto parchment-lined baking sheet.

Bake at 375°f for 8-10 minutes.

set aside.

in large mixing bowl, com-bine cake mix, pudding mix and chocolate chips.

in another bowl, combine water, eggs, and vanilla mix-ing well.

add egg mixture to dry mix-ture and mix with spoon until just blended.

pour into prepared pan.

Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until cake tests done when wooden pick in center comes out clean.

cool 15 to 20 minutes before removing cake from pan.

when completely cool, drizzle cake with chocolate glaze.

chocolate glaze: combine all ingredients in bowl.

mix with spoon until smooth.

Bring cream and butter to a simmer.

pour over chocolate and stir/whisk until melted and smooth.

business spotlight

Spring cleaning just wouldn’t be complete without clean carpet and tile in your home and office. It’s the season to gear up for indoor/outdoor par-ties and Randall Carpet Care is offering free home estimates with a referral appreciation program that’s refreshing to your flooring and your pocketbook. Estrella resident, John Randall, Sr. brings two generations of carpet and floor care experience to your assistance. Call 623-734-3589 or email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.

Randall Carpet Care believes that there are key aspects to proper carpet cleaning including vacuuming, preconditioning for soiled areas, adequate “dwell” time for the detergent to break down the soils, agitation, extraction of soils and detergents and carpet nap setting. “Sadly, many carpet cleaners pick and choose only the aspects that are convenient for them, resulting in incomplete service,” says the company’s Owner/Operator, John.

As with every business owner, John has stories of customers that have made a positive impression on him. “This,” he states, “is one of the great rewards of owning your own business.” Business relationships with custom-ers are an important aspect of reputation for Randall Carpet Care. In the early days, John recalls working with his brother, Paul. After completing a carpet cleaning at Mr. Lee’s home, the two returned to discuss the finished results and settle the bill. “Mr. Lee insisted that we stay and have dinner with him and his wife,” remembers Randall. “It’s just not what one expects from a new customer, but a positive and rewarding experience nonetheless.”

John grew up in a suburb of Chicago, helping his dad with the fam-ily business of carpet care from a very young age. “Ours was a true family business, dad running the show, mom running the office, and each of us

five children on the job. John eventually left the family busi-ness when his dad retired and sold the business, and settled into a job that was a seven year stretch in public service. He has since happily returned to busi-ness ownership in carpet and tile care as his career of choice. He and his wife, Lisa, consider themselves lucky to have “stum-bled” upon Estrella, as a string of events invited the couple to follow Lisa’s dear friend to Arizona from California several years ago.

“This is a very exciting time for me, getting back into the career that I was born to have,” says John. And while the Valley isn’t subjected to snow, slush and frequent rain, we are required to deal with higher than average amounts of dust and sand. These conditions act as harsh abrasives and damage carpet fibers, thus making the carpet more susceptible to soiling. Vacuuming and regular professional cleanings are the optimal way to com-bat the dirt that Arizona dishes out. John is grateful that his wife, Lisa, an elementary school teacher at Westar, and his son are very supportive. “Occasionally,” says John, “I rope my father into assisting me with a job. He comes around in his RV to say hello and help out from time to time. It’s fun to have him call ME boss!

In a lingering recession where some golf courses have found memberships dwindling and numbers

of rounds decreasing, the Golf Club of Estrella has seen not only steady traffic, but increased rounds

at its 18 hole, par 72 Nicklaus championship course.

The Golf Club of Estrella features the first daily fee golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus II

in Arizona and has been recognized with many prestigious accolades over the years. In 2009, the

Golf Club of Estrella was honored with the title of “#10 America’s Best Courses, State-by-State” by

Golfweek magazine. The course also currently holds four out of five Editor’s Rating Stars as a “Best

Place to Play” with the esteemed Golf Digest.

Covering an impressive 7,102 yards, the Golf Club of Estrella offers spectacular views with

fairways that blanket the natural contours of the surrounding desert land. Its consistently high

standards of service and unique setting have maintained loyalty not only from residents, many of

whom are annual pass holders, but visitors as well.

Along with the beautiful spring weather in Arizona, come great opportunities to enjoy the

outdoors. Even if you aren’t an avid golfer, The Golf Club of Estrella offers great views of the Sierra

Estrella Mountains, a delicious menu at the Players’ Grille, patio seating and a firepit for casual

gatherings and challenging golf on the award-winning course.

For more information about the Golf Club of Estrella or to make a reservation, please call

623-386-2600 or visit the Golf Club’s web page at www.estrellagolf.com, featuring tee-time schedules
