What I want to do

• To give critical factors for success in online learning suggested in the existing literature

• To identify the critical factors for success in online learning of TCU

• To help you get ideas to succeed in implementing online learning in Thailand

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

What is online learning

• The nonexistence of a physical classroom, flexible schedules, and reduced personal interactions

• Online education is a type of distance learning---taking courses without attending a brick-and-mortar school or university. Instead, online students and teachers interact over the Internet.

• According to the U.S. Department of education, online learning is learning that is undertaken on a computer by means of the Internet.

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

What is online learning?

• Types of Online Learning – Distance Learning– Cyber Schooling– Blended Learning– Online public Education (K-12)– Online Secondary Education (college and

university classes)– E-learning– M-learning

Page 8: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

What is e-learning?

• The use of Internet technologies to deliver a broad array of solutions that enhance knowledge and performance(Rosenberg, 2001)

• E-learning is Internet-enabled learning (http://www.cisco.com)

• All learning involving technology in any way whatsoever (Dempsey & Van Eck, 2012)

Online(E-) learning is

• an online learning environment:– teaching & learning is ‘one-to-one’ (individual)

– more interactivity with contents, not with people

– learner-centered or learner-directed– monitoring & grading system(LMS)

Traditional & Online(E-) learning Approach

Traditional Classroom E-Learning

Classroom • Physical – limited size• Synchronous

• Unlimited• Anytime, anywhere

Content • PowerPoint/transparency/etc• Textbooks/library• Video• Collaboration

• Multimedia / simulation• Digital library• On demand• Syn & Asyn. Communication

Personalisation • One learning path • Learning path and pace determined by learner

Page 11: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Benefits

• Convenient– self-service (mix and match)

– on-demand (anytime, anywhere)– private learning– self-paced– Flexibility: (modular package)

Page 12: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

• Cost-effective– Virtual learning environment– Share lessons among schools– Reduce material cost– Reduce travel/accommodation costs

Benefits

Page 13: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Benefits

• Consistent– Central control of content– Same quality of content for all– Same quality of education for all

Page 14: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Benefits

• media-rich– Easier to understand & more engaging

• repeatable– As many times as you like

• easier to monitor progress– less administrative work– can be more precise

Page 15: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Disadvantages

• Learners with low motivation and bad study habits can easily fall behind

• Lack of routine structure• Students may feel isolated from classmates

or instructor• Instructor may not always be available• Slow Internet connections or older

computers make accessing course difficult

Page 16: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Disadvantages

• Hands-on or lab work is difficult to simulate in a virtual classroom

• Lack of student customization • Lack of personal community and connection• Lack of quality assessment and feedback,

which may hinder learning• A lot of downtime and “play” issues• Digital divide may short circuit improvement

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Disadvantages

• Underutilized talents and facilities• Cost is still equivalent if not more than

brick and mortar school• Course availability• Employment• Working Alone• Missing out on non-verbal communication

Page 19: MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY Critical Factors for Success in Online Learning(e-learning) of Thailand Innwoo Park (Korea University)

MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Will online(e-) learning be successful?

• 2012 Survey on Online Education in USA– Over 6.7 million students were taking at least one online course

during the fall 2011 term, an increase of 570,000 students over the previous year.

– Thirty-two percent of higher education students now take at least one course online.

– Seventy-seven percent of academic leaders rate the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face.

– A majority of chief academic officers at all types of institutions continue to believe that lower retention rates for online courses are a barrier to the wide-spread adoption of online education.

Will online(e-) learning be successful?

• Today’s Learners– The modern college student is interested in online learning,

small modules and short programs…and in learning that can be done at home and fitted around work, family and social obligations (Tony Bates)

– Information-age learners prefer doing to knowing, trial and error to logic and typing to handwriting. Multitasking is a way of life for them, staying connected is essential and there is zero tolerance for delays. Modern literacy includes not only text but also image and screen literacy – it involves navigating information and assembling knowledge from fragments (Oblinger; Jones and Pritchard)

Will online(e-) learning be successful?

• What is learning?– Can we teach students directly or only

motivate them to learn? – Can learning simply be done alone? or should

be done in a group?

Will online(e-) learning be successful?

• What is learning?– We really know very little about the process of

learning, how the mind works when learning. … Learning creates neural connections and rewires your brain.(Cross, 103)

– One of the best ways to learn is social; we learn with and from other people. We learn by doing.(Cross, 104)

Which one is your choice and why?

• If you can choose one from face-to-face and distance(e-learning) for a course, which one do you choose and why? Both courses almost identical in terms of reading materials, assignments, participation, weekly hours, and cost(tuition).
