Pet of the MonthRecord numbers participated in Adventure Sport NQ’s Metrogaine in December 2013. 140 competitors wearing headlamps used maps to locate checkpoints around the streets of Gordonvale in the Extreme Summer Metrogaine series.

It was the biggest lineup of competitors in three years with Gordonvale and Cairns competitors enjoying the event. Competitors located points of interest from as far away as the Highway side of the Gordonvale High School through to the Golf course and then onto the Desmond Tranorre Bridge across the Mulgrave River. Many of the points were located close to town which enabled people of all ages including some in prams to compete in the event.

A Metrogaine is an activity for individuals or teams of all ages and fitness levels. Points are scored for each checkpoint visited and the points vary depending on how difficult a checkpoint is to find or reach in the 60 minute time limit. The individual or team with the highest score wins.

In first place with a total of 305 points was solo competitor Rachel Effeney. Local first timer, Louise Brayshaw was so inspired by the event that she has promised to participate in the next Gordonvale Metrograine and also work on her navigational skills in preparation.

Gordonvale was one of the locations of the 6 events in the series. The next 3 events will be held in Redlynch, Bayview and Whitfield . Further details can be found on the Adventure Sport NQ website. Mike Coleman from Adventure Sport NQ indicated that it is likely another Metrogaine event will be held in Gordonvale in 2014.

On Tuesday the 28th of January Gordonvale State High welcomed over 250 new students for the start of the 2014 school year. These students included 76 year 7 students who moved to high school a year earlier than many other schools across the state.

Gordonvale State High school was selected as a pilot school along with 19 other secondary schools throughout the state to trial the program. All year 7 students in the state will move to high school in 2015, based on information gained from the pilot schools.

Many of the year 7 students moved from the Gordonvale Primary School. The move of year 7 students to the High school included extra facilities that were completed late last year including four classrooms, a flexible learning area, staff room, music room and drama room.

Taking enrolments for 2014 now.

In an extraordinary display of international friendship, Cairns based junior club, Pyramid Power, have just gained their 100th international Brother Club.

This week, the Port Adelaide Football Club, one of the 18 national teams in the AFL, agreed to become the 100th club to join the Pyramid Power Brother Club Project. This extraordinary gesture sees the tiny idea from a tiny club in North Queensland reach an unprecedented level of acknowledgement and acceptance from one of the biggest clubs in the world of Australian Rules football.

The Brother Clubs Project was commenced in 2012 when Pyramid Power sought to expand its supporter base through the use of social media and make genuine friends with Australian Football clubs all over the world. What started as a small group of clubs who commenced sending messages of support has now grown to include teams from almost 40 countries across the world. Many of these clubs jointly assist each other when needed as well as simply keeping in touch.

Since the project began, Pyramid Power has received assistance with scholarships for their players for 2014 and many football jumpers from “brothers” across the world which will one day feature on the walls of their club rooms once they are built. Their players have also benefited from messages of support sent to them prior to finals matches in the past two seasons, with the kids in awe of the fact that people from clubs across the world know of their feats.

In return, Pyramid Power has sent equipment to clubs in Fiji, Canada and Papua New Guinea, as well as sending documents and expertise to clubs in England, Ireland, Scotland and Canada to help develop school and junior programs overseas. The club has also had two of its coaches, President Brett Kennerley and U16 Coach Wesley Hull, become ambassadors for the Footys4all Foundation, a Melbourne based charity which ensures that footballs reach kids in need across Australia. The club is also currently involved in assisting s junior club in South Africa to keep playing by gathering donations of equipment to send to the poverty-stricken community.

The Brother Club Project has grown beyond its expected popularity, but not its aims. In a world that is sometimes driven by issues more financially viable than friendships, it is refreshing to see a junior football club prepared to follow old-fashioned conventions and simply value friends and be there for them. Anybody interested in Pyramid Power’s Brother Club Project can contact the club through Facebook at www.facebook.com/wesley.hull.58, or visit their website for information at pyramidpower.weebly.com/brother-clubs-project.html

From Robyn's Bowen Therapy & Emmett Technique

Welcome to the New Year. So far the year has brought a few issues to my attention and there are a couple that I wish to share with you. A lot of people don't realize there are simple treatments that may help with issues such as dizziness and also incontinence, which can be extremely embarrassing and inconvenient.

I have had a few clients presenting with dizziness. This can be due to many reasons. For some I have found it is related to their sinus and others their balance and relief may be achieved after 1 or 2 treatments. Other issues may be more involved which your health professional can help you with.

Bladder incontinence is also a condition that can be caused by a multitude of factors and may need to be checked out by your Doctor. However, I have had success with clients experiencing incontinence when they sneeze or cough.

After 1 or 2 treatments there has been a dramatic change. If you wish to enjoy life without pain or discomfort please give me a call. Everyone deserves to be happy and pain free.

It's a bit of a rush calling Bingo in a room full of people.

When I was a kid visiting my grandmother I went to Bingo with her a couple of times. I remember the tension, the concentration and the buzz whenever someone yelled out “BINGO!"

Thursday morning last week I attended Bingo at the Gordonvale RSL. It is held in the dining room in air conditioned comfort. As a newcomer I was made to feel very welcome and assistance was happily provided.

Dave Chalk (fondly known by EVERYBODY as Chalky) ran the proceedings with plenty of good humour and at a good pace acknowledging newcomers and regulars alike.

Tickets are reasonably priced and they have $200 jackpot games. They also give you the option of buying freshly made sandwiches for the tea break. Delicious and only $3 with tea, coffee, cake and biscuits also available.

So I bought in to the games with $10.30 worth of tickets and giving credit to "Beginner's luck" I called "BINGO!" twice for a $10 return - how good is that?!!

I even won some extra ticket sheets in the raffle so I will use them next time I visit. My egg and lettuce sandwich was the best I have tasted in a very long while, Betty was lovely to chat with and I am very happy she took me under her wing.

I wou ld ce r ta in ly recommend BINGO at the Gordonvale RSL as a pleasant Thursday morning outing. Take a friend and make new ones too. Share a c u p p a , ya r n w i th Chalky, have a laugh and carefully mark off your numbers so you too can call “BINGO!" - Helen

The municipal library opened in Gordonvale by the Mulgrave Shire Council on Friday 19th February 1954 (Cairns Post 16 March 1954,p.4)

The library service operated out of the original School of Arts building erected in 1903 on the corner of Norman and Cannon Streets Gordonvale. The Council acquired the property in July 1953 and under loan subsidy terms, the Council remodelled the interior so that the new appearance suited the purposes of a municipal library. The Library was open from 10.00am to 12.20 pm and from 1.40 pm to 5 pm on weekdays and 7 pm – 7.45pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Librarian Miss Gloria Huish, from the State Library of Queensland, was on site for several weeks to provide valuable assistance to Council Librarian Mrs M. Martin. The Library’s membership began with 30 adults and 150 children. For the first week of operation, 436 books were issued to children and 233 books issued to adults. The Library proudly featured fiction and nonfiction books in both the adult and children’s sections, periodicals, and newspapers. The library was free and each person could borrow two books at a time for two weeks. A penalty of one penny per day was imposed for each book kept beyond the two weeks loan period.

Persons above eighteen years of age were requested to pay a one pound deposit which entitled them to request and receive items from the holdings of the State Library of Queensland via the Country Extension Service. A new library building was constructed in 1956 with a Council office, meeting room , and Councillor’s room added in 1995. This building is on track for refurbishment later this year.

The Library service is now one of eight branch libraries managed by the Cairns Regional Council. Cairns Libraries proudly features eBooks, DVDs, CDs, databases, audio books, newspapers, magazines and adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books. Customers can borrow ten items for a period of three weeks and the Library is open Monday to Friday 10.00am – 6.00pm and on Saturday mornings. The Gordonvale Library is interested in finding out the names of these ladies in the above photo, if anyone can help, please contact the Mulgrave News, [email protected]

Each month the Mulgrave news will endeavour to bring photos and stories of animals that are up for adoption through the North Queensland Animal Rescue foster carers.

The North Qld Animal Rescue (NQAR) is a foster carer based rescue servicing homeless pets in the Cairns region. NQAR are completely not for profit and the rescue program is run completely by volunteers. This week we feature Xavier a 12 week old Kitten.

Xavier, affectionately known as Mr X is the cutest 12 week old kitten around. Mr X is very laid back, loves purring cuddles and gets super excited about his food!

He is a North Queensland Animal Rescue kitty and comes vaccinated, wormed, flea controlled, microchipped and desexed for only $100. He is available for kitty cuddles and adoption from The Feed Shop.

Gordonvale Library celebrates 60 years

Welcome to this month’s Editorial and all things Real Estate. The year has certainly taken off at a fast trot in our office and a visible change in the Market.I am getting good attendance at Open Homes and, in general, most properties are going under contract within a week or two of listing and advertising, often with multiple offers. Even though the Aquis Resort has been put on hold for a while, confidence is still strong with buyers seeing an upward trend in the

market and not wanting to miss out. With a supply shortage of properties to sell, it is an excellent time to put your property on the market as there is very little competition.

Based on the latest Cairns Watch by Herron Todd White for December 2013, even though property prices in some Cairns areas are increasing, it is not reflecting in the overall median prices due to the volume of sales in the cheaper end of the market. Nevertheless, Cairns has continued to lift off the bottom of the Property Clock and is in a Start of Recovery Market. Recollections by R. S. Jamieson (part one)

(Information supplied by Mulgrave Settlers Museum)

One of the first sounds heard over Gordonvale Sunday morning, other than church bells, was the rifle fire coming from the Mulgrave Rifle Club range near the old council dump. This was preceded the previous night by the sound of the accordion, leaf and bagpipes heard at Scouts Hall, where the Caledonian Society held a Scottish dance every fortnight. Gentlemen were charged 2 shillings and ladies had to take a plate of nibbles.

The clip clop of horses could be heard either ridden, drawing vehicles or sometimes just strays, looking for some fresh grass. The sounds of train whistles and excess steam, were a daily occurrence, particularly when trains were getting up steam to make it up the cutting. The train driver blew the whistle to make children dive off the railway bridge into the river to prevent them being run over. At the station you could hear the screech of the large faucet at the water tank and the rattle of chains to open valves on the tank when filling the water tender.

During the cane season, the Mulgrave Mill used approximately 7 locos to haul and shunt cane. There was always the constant noise of whistles, steam and clanging when cane was being hauled or shunted. Most goods were home delivered in the early days, so there was the constant sound of different vendors calling out the names of their wares, such as ‘grocer’, ‘baker’, ice’, ‘butcher’, ‘vegetable’ or ‘wedge-abul’ as most green-grocers were Chinese except “Long Bean”Charlie who was an Italian. Milkman came, with the rattle of their cans of raw milk in the carts. With the sound of the one pint and quart measuring jugs clanging together. Then there was the ice-cream man ringing his bell when driving his horse and cart.

The sound of cross cut saws was the most prevalent as every home cooked on a wood stove, except for a few that cooked using the

kerosene stove. Sawing was done on saw horses by members of the family, particularly on Saturday afternoons, as Saturday mornings everyone was still working. This noise was soon followed by the sound of the axes splitting wood for the stove or kindling.

To be continued...

Major work has now been completed at the water tower and the crew have done an excellent job in keeping the base together so that a steel frame can be constructed on the top, a larger concrete pad below and an interpretive historical display inside.

Check it out next time you are in town. Council is still investigating further improvements to Norman Park such as enhanced facilities and playground equipment.
