    Students from Kurunjang Secondary School will be well and truly ready for university thanks to an innovative educational model being implemented at the school.

    The AVID program Advancement via Individual Determination is aimed at offering support to students, particularly those in the academic middle so they can apply to university and achieve their full potential.

    Teacher David Gorton said the program, an elective in the younger year levels, taught students a variety of techniques to make it easier to enter a university course after high school.

    Mr Gorton said students of all capabilities had benefited from the program since it was launched last year and the schoool now had three AVID classes.

    By teaching students the skills and behaviours for success, while providing intensive support and developing a sense of hope, social mobility is a real and achievable aim for many of the students in the community, he said. Many students explain that they want to be the first member of their family to attend university.

    Nicole Tomilloso, 14, who has been in the program for two years, told Star Weekly it had helped learning become more natural for her.

    Im really organised now and I think its made me become a better learner, she said.

    Kristen Twite, 13, said she entered the program to improve her marks and learn how to better organise her time so that she could hand projects in on time.

    Other AVID students Alesha Laurie, 13, and Trent Fletcher-Gass, 14, said the course had improved their communication skills and they now loved learning.

    Melton council has welcomed a state government funding announcement that will help develop a multi-stage community resilience program.

    The Victorian government is providing $91,700 to Melton and Wyndham councils to develop a program aimed at building the emergency capabilities of community leaders, faith-based groups, seniors groups, service clubs and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

    Western Metropolitan Region MP Andrew Elsbury said the $243,700 Western Areas Resilience project would include leadership training, community forums, developing emergency planning toolkits and producing a training package to help mentors.

    Melton council operations manager Greg Wood said the project would address a gap in the community.

    The funding will be used for a project officer to work across both [Melton-Wyndham] communities with the objective to build community resilience to emergency situations, he said. This has been identified as a gap in both our councils emergency planning arrangements.

    With this funding, the community will gain greater understanding of the roles they and all levels of government play in planning, preparation, response and recovery through a localised approach to and from the community.

    Smoke alarm warningThe CFA is urging residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms installed after attending five house fires across the state last Tuesday night. The call-outs included a blaze in Bacchus Marsh, which started in a chimney. Duty officer Rohan Luke said the CFA had attended 84 fires around the state in the past two weeks. He said the best way to survive a house fire was to be alerted at the earliest opportunity by a working smoke alarm.

    Bacchus Marsh fire brigade and Western Water are calling on residents to adopt a hydrant to help keep the community safer.

    CFA volunteers are hitting the streets this month to prepare fire hydrants in case of emergency. Fourth Lieutenant Dale Salathiel said many hydrants in the area were not easily accessible or visible to firefighters, which meant vital minutes could be wasted searching or calling for another truck to attend the incident.

    He called on the community to care for

    hydrants and keep them clear, and volunteers would be out and about locating and marking them with paint, reflective markers and posts.

    Western Water is urging residents to help the CFA by clearing soil, grass and shrubs from around hydrants, keeping vehicles away from them and reporting any visible faults, damage or missing markers by calling 1300 650 422 or visiting www.westernwater.com.au.

    A tiny Maddingley girl has the chance of a better life, thanks to the generosity of the tight-knit Bacchus Marsh community.

    Little Cailin was recently diagnosed with global developmental delay and suspected cerebral palsy.

    Then last week, her distressed parents, Jade Addicott and Marc Robinson, were told she would require ankle-foot orthosis (AFO).

    AFOs are custom-made devices that support and control movements of the lower limbs.

    Ms Addicott told Star Weekly her orthotist and physiotherapist had suggested the family apply for funding, which would be at least a three-month process, or pay for the AFOs privately at a cost of $1000.

    After receiving hand-made childrens toys and clothes to sell at a local market to use the proceeds for the AFOs, Ms Addicott posted a question on the Bacchus Marsh Residents Facebook page on the cost of holding a stall at the Darley Market.

    She was surprised by the response from readers.

    The response was overwhelming, she said. About 10 people offered to donate more items for me to sell. Some people offered to have a fund-raising event and others suggested I look at a website called Go Fund Me, where people can donate money.

    By Tuesday night the first-time mum had set up a Go Fund Me page and within hours had raised $1200, with Marsh Tech Electrical Services donating $500.

    This is not what I had expected at all, Ms Addicott said. I thought we might get a few small donations of $5 or $10, which we could put towards her AFOs.

    It just goes to show there are some extremely generous people in the community. I even had a local cleaning business offer to clean my house so I can spend that time with my daughter.

    The generosity comes in the wake of months of worry for the family, who first noticed the 20-month-old was developing slowly compared to other children at her playgroup.

    After countless blood tests, scans and visits to paediatricians for Cailin, her parents received the grim diagnosis. Now they have some hope that their precious girl will get the life she deserves.

    Its frustrating for everyone, so difficult and draining, especially for Cailin, Ms Addicott said. We have no idea what to expect in the future. Will she walk or will she need a wheelchair? Will she talk?

    Everyone just wants the best for their child and for them to reach their full potential, but I dont even know what her full potential is.

    Ms Addicott said Cailin would get her AFOs as soon as this week and it would make a huge difference to her life.

    I dont want to get my hopes up, but this will give her the best possible chance of learning to walk, she said.

    As for the generosity of the community, Ms Addicott continues to be overwhelmed.

    Im still in shock, she said. Every time money came through I cried. I

    really didnt expect it. Im so grateful.

If youre celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone.

    When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite.

    The buffet offers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

    My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini.

    Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the soft mattress and pillows and drift off into a peaceful nights sleep.

    The Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, fitness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Tiffin High Tea.

Slatted timber screens that create a second roofline down to the side fence make the relaxation area private and intimate, while a ceiling fan and downlights add amenity.

    Back and side yards are planted with lawn, and nascent specimen trees march along the perimeters.

    Around the corner from a park, the property has a walk-in linen closet, ducted heating and cooling, and a remote-controlled double garage with back roller door.
