Trainer Darren Weir has run his star horses against champion mare Winx (Street Cry) in the past and had no thoughts of altering the

including out-of-form Group One winner Magicool (Fastnet Rock) ($301) and Benchmark 58 Handicap winner Skyfire (Testa Rossa) ($301).

Connections of Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice), Harlem (Champs Elysees), Tally (Street Cry), Gallante (Montjeu) and Amralah (Teofilo) elected to skip a clash with Winx, who is chasing her 21st straight win.

Weir’s racing manager Jeremy Rogers told ANZ Bloodstock News this week Winx’s earlier than expected transfer to Melbourne had not altered plans for Humidor ($4.80).

Last year, the Weir-trained Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) took on Winx in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), which saw only two rivals take on the mare, a fortnight before finishing ninth in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

“Our goal with Humidor is the Caulfield Cup, so the Turnbull being two weeks before the race is perfect and whatever happens on Saturday, it is not his final goal (this campaign),” Rogers said.

“He is in great order and hopefully we can run second to Winx. We had Black Heart Bart in the Caulfield Stakes to Winx last year, finishing second of three as well, so we had no thoughts of changing plans.”

The Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner, who started his career in New Zealand with trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard, burst to the top of the Caulfield Cup betting when trouncing Hartnell (Authorized) by three and a quarter lengths at his last start in the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

Humidor has since been displaced by Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) winner, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Bonneval (Makfi), who is now the $5 outright favourite for the $3,000,000 race at Caulfield on 21 October.

The fact Humidor won the Makybe Diva Stakes, his third run back from a spell, did not surprise Rogers but the manner in which he won the race did.

Humidor, who has drawn barrier four in the Turnbull Stakes, settled last in a field of 12 on a fast tempo, before sprinting home his last 600 metres in 35.09 seconds to win by three and three quarter lengths.

“We thought he was on an upward plane but is still not ready, so what he did the other day did surprise us,” Rogers said.

“We always thought he was going well, though, but the margin was a bit of a shock.”

Damian Lane, who also rode Humidor first up in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on 19 August and in the Makybe Diva Stakes, retains the ride tomorrow.

“It would suit him if the tempo is on because he is a get-back horse and will be strong late. If it is a sit and sprint, then (previous) times say he is going to find it hard,” Rogers said.

Meanwhile, Winx was given a low key workout at Flemington yesterday by race day jockey Hugh Bowman who also partnered the six-year-old mare in a more serious hit out on Monday.

"I thought she moved as well as she did all preparation on Monday morning so I took great comfort from that," Bowman said.

"And the fact she's a little more relaxed within herself, I take comfort from that as well and we're looking forward to the weekend."

Waller was also pleased with Winx’s progress and believes the spacious Flemington circuit will suit the mare.

"She's obviously been here twice before and in fact we feel she's more comfortable here," Waller said.

"It's a great open area. It's like they're in a natural environment. There's so much room to move so she's adapted very well.

"My indication is with a horse, how their body language is when they are going on and off the track.

"If they're a little bit tense they'll shuffle on and off the track. But she's just flowing out there. So I think that's great. Her eating has been good, that's the other sign we look for."

Bowman said Humidor, who was runner-up to Jameka (Myboycharlie) in The BMW (registered as H E Tancred Stakes) (Gr 1, 2400m) at Rosehill in the autumn, was the clear danger to Winx stretching her winning run to 21 tomorrow.

"I've got a very healthy respect for Humidor," Bowman said.

"I thought his win last start was very impressive. He beat a class field and with all due respect to Happy Clapper, I'd say he's probably the toughest opposition that she's met this preparation.”

Winx remains world’s best turf horseChampion mare Winx (Street Cry) has maintained her position as the world’s highest-rated turf horse following the release of the latest Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. She is still second overall on a rating of 132 behind Arrogate (Unbridled's Song) (134), who has suffered surprise defeats at his last two starts. Following her victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) at Chantilly, three-year-old filly Enable (Nathaniel) has risen to third on a rating of 128, just ahead of Gun Runner (Candy Ride) and Ulysses (Galileo) on 127.

Tangled set for Group One assignmentTrainer Chris Waller believes Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Tangled (Snitzel) will be suited by a step up in distance in tomorrow’s Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick. The three-year-old colt was last first up in The Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m) before improving second up when finishing fourth in the Dulcify Quality Handicap (Listed, 1600m) last Saturday. “What he did as a two-year-old was pretty special in terms of he wasn’t quite ready for it. He was an immature horse,” Waller said. “He’s a more mature horse now. His run on Saturday was the run of a winner.”

Morning Briefing

Busuttin hoping for improvement from SullyCo-trainer Trent Busuttin is also confident New Zealand-bred three-year-old Sully (Reliable Man) will improve significantly in the Spring Champion Stakes tomorrow. The lightly raced gelding progressed from a Wangaratta maiden victory in August and a victory at Bendigo on 14 September to running fourth in the Gloaming Stakes (Gr 3, 1800m) on 23 September at Rosehill. "He raced a bit flat off the eight-day back up in the Gloaming Stakes," Busuttin said. "It was all a bit too rushed for him but I think you'll see a different horse on Saturday. It all probably happened a bit too quick for him and I think it just took the edge off him at Rosehill. First time around the Sydney way at Rosehill I've found horses really improve off it.”

Chauffeur confirmed for Roman ConsulGroup Three-placed colt Chauffeur (Snitzel) will run in tomorrow’s Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick instead of the tackling the Antler Luggage Stakes (registered as Poseidon Stakes) (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained three-year-old has remained in Sydney since finishing sixth in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Rosehill on 23 September. Chauffeur will be ridden by Hong Kong-based Australian jockey Sam Clipperton tomorrow, with the colt drawing barrier four in the field of eight.

Savapinski has his sights raisedConnections are hopeful a decision to bypass an easier assignment with Savapinski (Savabeel) at Canterbury on Wednesday pays off when she runs in the Angst Quality Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m) at Randwick tomorrow. The four-year-old mare has won her past two starts at Wyong and Hawkesbury and steps up dramatically in class in the Group Three race. “She’s still learning but she’s been going really well and showing sharp improvement even though it may only read like provincial form,” Bott said. “It may seem like we’re throwing her in the deep end a bit, but she deserves a crack at a race like this. A good tough mile against her own sex will really suit.”

The Quarterback pleasing GriffithsLast year’s Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) will make his spring return in the Gilgai Stakes (registered as the Baguette Stakes) (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington tomorrow, the scene of the seven-year-old’s biggest win. Trained by Robbie Griffiths, The Quarterback’s autumn preparation was plagued by barrier

mishaps and setbacks but ran fourth in a recent Cranbourne barrier trial over 800 metres, signalling he could return to his best form. “I think if he can run a pleasing race we’re on target for the Manikato Stakes and the Darley Classic,” Griffiths said. “It would be nice to try to win first up like we did last year but I don’t believe I’ve got him as forward in condition just due to the winter tracks I’ve been trialling him on.”

Cummings cautious over Tally runGodolphin’s Australian head trainer James Cummings is far from optimistic about his horse Tally (Street Cry) being able to win The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m) at Flemington tomorrow, a race named after his late grandfather. Tally, a five-year-old gelding, disappointed his trainer when seventh in the Naturalism Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield on 23 September. "It's a shame that Tally was a little lacklustre last start because he was building to a really big performance," Cummings said. "I'd like to see him run well but I wouldn't be able to make any promises because he's coming off a negative run. He was saved up for a nice bit of work on Tuesday morning and he worked too well for him not to run. He's had a lighter build-up to this race and he's brighter in himself and has put a bit of weight back on."

Group One aspirations for ObservationalCaulfield trainer John Sadler is hoping seven-year-old Observational (Galileo) can set up a planned trip to Perth this campaign with a strong first up performance in tomorrow’s Paris Lane Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. The gelding won the Golden Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Bendigo and the Easter Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) last campaign and resumes with jockey Daniel Stackhouse taking the ride tomorrow with a view to contesting the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ascot. "He ran a good second in the Warrnambool Cup but I don't really think he's a stayer," Sadler said. "I think he's more of a middle distance horse, between 1600 metres to 2000 metres."

Spencer to ride Brave Smash in EverestLeading European jockey Jamie Spencer will ride Japanese import Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom) in The Everest (1200m)

at Randwick on 14 October. The Darren Weir-trained five-year-old was chosen by slot holder the Australian Turf Club (ATC) to run in the $10,000,000 race and has not been further back than second in his three Australian starts. “Jamie has ridden for (Brave Smash’s owner) Australian Bloodstock successfully in the past and the ATC is very excited to have Jamie visit Australia again to take part in a race which is attracting huge interest across the world,” ATC executive general manager of racing James Heddo said.

Bowman works Cup hope Red CardinalJockey Hugh Bowman yesterday partnered international Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) contender Red Cardinal (Montjeu) in a gallop at Werribee racecourse for trainer Andreas Wohler. Red Cardinal won the Belmont Gold Cup (Gr 2, 16f) in June for owner Australian Bloodstock before finishing unplaced in the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) on 20 August at

Deauville. “I just wanted to get a feel of the horse as he’s an option for me in the Melbourne Cup,” Bowman said. “He wasn’t out to do a whole lot this morning but I was very pleased with him. He moved well and is a very good looking horse.” Red Cardinal is due to run in the Herbert Power Stakes (Gr 2, 2400m) at Caulfield on 14 October.

O’Brien outlines spring carnival plansAidan O’Brien has outlined his spring plans for Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) and Taj Mahal (Galileo), who are both set to commence their respective preparations in the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on Saturday week. "Taj Mahal and Johannes Vermeer are in Australia and the plan is for them to run in the Caulfield Stakes over a mile and a quarter on 14 October,” O’Brien told the Racing Post. "If all goes well then Johannes Vermeer will probably run in the Caulfield Cup on 21 October. Taj Mahal might go on to the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on 28 October."

Appleby finalising first up targetsGodolphin trainer Charlie Appleby is finalising the first up targets for his four-strong raiding party for the Spring Carnival. Kidmenever (Baltic King) is expected to tackle the Herbert Power Stakes on 14 October at Caulfield, while Group One placegetter Folkswood (Exceed And Excel) is likely to target the Caulfield Stakes at the same meeting. Meanwhile, the returning Francis Of Assisi (Danehill Dancer) and Qewy (Street Cry) will tackle the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and the Geelong Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) first up respectively.

Catchy remains on course for GuineasGroup One-winning filly Catchy (Fastnet Rock) remains on course for a tilt at the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday week despite her defeat in the Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield five days ago. The Lindsay Park-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was beaten half a

length into third by Booker (Written Tycoon) on Sunday and she will be ridden by Mark Zahra in the $2,000,000 race, with Regan Bayliss set to travel to Randwick to ride Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) in The Everest (1200m).

Caulfield Classic aim for Tavistock AbbeyThe progressive, last start Flemington winner Tavistock Abbey (Tavistock) is likely to tackle the Caulfield Classic (Gr 3, 2000m) at his next start. The Anthony Freedman-trained gelding, who narrowly beat Main Stage (Reliable Man) in the Victoria Derby Trial (1800m) on 27 September, could be given a hit out on Monday as he continues to build towards the $500,000 Group Three on 21 October. The gelding was purchased for NZ$200,000 by Freedman at last year’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from the draft of Rich Hill Stud.

Coolmore campaign for Merchant NavyHigh-class colt Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock)

will be campaigned with the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) in mind this spring. Trainer Aaron Purcell, who recently took over the running of the suspended Ciaron Maher’s stable, has earmarked the Blue Sapphire Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on 18 October as the colt’s lead up race to the $1,000,000 Group One, due to be held on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington on 4 November.

Cahill lands Brinkmanship mountJockey Michael Cahill has been booked to ride the promising Helen Page-trained two-year-old Brinkmanship (Spirit Of Boom) for his debut over 900 metres at the Gold Coast tomorrow. The colt, by first-season sire Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo), fetched $150,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and last month won a Gold Coast barrier trial by two and a half lengths under Luke Dittman, who is riding a rival in tomorrow’s race. Dream Finnish out to continue good runIn-form five-year-old mare Dream Finnish (Captain Sonador) will bid to follow up her first up success over 1200 metres at Ipswich when she lines up in the PFD Queensland Open Handicap (1400m) at the Gold Coast tomorrow. "Dream Finnish has proved a really good mare. She always seems to race well first up and second up," trainer Michael Nolan said. "I'm keen to get her to a middle distance, but this campaign we will take our time." Dream Finnish is due to face eight rivals in the $60,000 race.

Quinton escapes cobalt punishmentTrainer Ron Quinton has escaped a penalty over prohibited levels of cobalt found in two of his horses, with incorrectly labelled feed accepted as the likely culprit. Quinton fronted a Racing New South Wales stewards’ inquiry yesterday after pre-race urine samples taken from Boss Lane (Dubawi) and Imanui (Al Maher) in August revealed higher than permitted levels of cobalt. "Obviously it's come from the feed. I have no suspicion of any of my staff. There's no chance. I'm not into that stuff," Quinton said. However, Quinton was found guilty of presenting the horses to race with prohibited substances in their systems, with both horses disqualified from their respective races.

Balfour banned for attempted treatmentMornington-based trainer Clive Balfour has been disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to the attempted race day treatment of three horses at a Racing Victoria (RV) stewards’ inquiry yesterday. Rexmont (Shinzig), Alsimon (Bushranger) and Tarpeia (Bushranger) were withdrawn from their respective races at Moe on 25 September following a report from the RV Compliance Assurance Team after a raceday stable inspection of Balfour's stable. Balfour will be able to recommence training in April.

Melham suspendedJockey Ben Melham has been suspended for

nine race meetings after he was found guilty of careless riding at Ballarat yesterday. Melham was deemed to have caused interference aboard the Mick Price-trained Keysor (All Too Hard), who ran third in race two, and will be unable to ride until 16 October. Melham will miss Caulfield Guineas day, where he was scheduled to ride the Aidan O’Brien-trained Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) in the Caulfield Stakes.

Gingernuts camp full of confidence

Connections of Gingernuts (Iffraaj) are full of confidence heading into the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Hawke’s Bay tomorrow. The four-year-old took out the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at his last start and is set to travel to Australia for a tilt at the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) after the NZ$250,000 race. "He's never been better. He's at the top of his game," co-trainer Stephen Autridge said. “From (barrier 17) he can get back beyond midfield and even if he drops out to last I won't be worried. Opie (Bosson) can go round them whenever he wants and not be dictated to as he would be if he'd drawn in."

Prom Queen on course for BarnswoodThe smart Prom Queen (Super Easy) is on course for a tilt at the Barnswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Ashburton on 21 October. The three-year-old, who won the Northland Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at her last start and has only been beaten once in eight starts, was given an exhibition gallop at Ruakaka on

Wednesday. “She doesn’t gallop the best so it was pretty good for her,” rider Alysha Collett said. “She had a bit of a blow afterward so she’ll be improved by it. It’s going to be a very strong field at Ashburton.”

The Precious One suffers setbackUnbeaten three-year-old The Precious One (Darci Brahma) has suffered a minor setback and will now miss tomorrow’s Inglewood Stud Guineas Trial (1400m) at Riccarton. The filly, who has won both of her starts to date, could instead tackle the Barnswood Farm Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) next up. “She’s really bright and was all set to go to Riccarton but she’s got a stone bruise,” trainer Claire Anderton said. “It’s not serious but I just don’t want to take any risks with her. There are a couple of options for her. She can run at Ashburton in a couple of weeks.”

Hale to be patient with Seventh UpTrainer Shelley Hale is taking a patient approach with Group Two winner Seventh Up (Shinko King) this spring. The seven-year-old won the Easter Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) in April and Hale is already planning another autumn campaign. “He’s been back in work for a while and I’m just taking him along quietly,” Hale said. “I’ll find somewhere to slot him in. Maybe he could get to Rotorua for the weight-for-age sprint. Later on there’s the Rich Hill Mile then the Thorndon Mile, but we’ll just take it quietly and see how he comes up.”

Rogerson’s planning Guineas assaultGraeme and Debbie Rogerson are finalising their plans for the New Zealand Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on 18 November after several of their contenders were given barrier trials at Te Teko last week. Group Two winner Gift Of Power (Power) will be among their raiding party, along with Malambo (Duelled), Contessa Vanessa (Bullbars) and Mutechi (Swiss Ace). “I’m happy with (Gift Of Power) and she’s going to run at Taupo on 11 October and then we’ll find another race for her before Christchurch,” Graeme Rogerson said.

The four-year-old was last sighted running second in the Singapore Derby (SGP Gr 1, 2000m) for Laurie Laxon and is set to race from barrier ten in Sunday’s S$125,000 race. “Lim’s Samurai has really enjoyed his break. He went for two barrier trials and went nice,” Freedman said. “He will run in that race and then go on to the Raffles Cup and the Gold

Cup. Glen Boss rode him at his last barrier trial and was happy with him.”

Pikachu wins Happy Valley featureThe David Ferraris-trained Pikachu (Keeper) took out the HK$1,860,000 Tai Hang Handicap (1800m) at Happy Valley yesterday evening under an excellent rail-hugging ride by jockey Derek Leung. The New Zealand-bred seven-year-old, who was beaten a short head into second in the Hong Kong Macau Trophy (Gr 3, 1400m) two years ago, burst through on the inside at the 100 metres and had enough in hand to fend off the fast-finishing Dinozzo (Lilbourne Lad) by half a length, with Doyeni (Smart Strike) a further neck behind in third. Harry Angel to race on next yearDual Group One-winning sprinter Harry Angel (Dark Angel) will race on next season as a four-year-old, connections of the colt have confirmed. The Godolphin-raced son of Dark Angel (Acclamation) has won both the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) and Sprint Cup (Gr 1, 6f) this season and is being aimed at the British Champion Sprint Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) at Ascot on 21 October. "The plan is very much for Harry Angel to stay in training as a four-year-old,” Sam Bullard, Darley stallion manager, told the Racing Post. "He hasn't got many miles on the clock and if he can continue to win races in the Godolphin colours it would be fantastic.”

Polydream earmarked for Classic campaignThe exciting Polydream (Oasis Dream) has been

earmarked as a Classic contender for the 2018 season by trainer Freddy Head. The Group Three-winning filly lost her unbeaten record when a never-nearer second in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr 1, 1600m) on Sunday, and Head is looking forward to her three-year-old campaign. "She's come out of the race very well. I was very happy with her race," Head said. "We will run her over a mile. Hopefully go for the Guineas or the Pouliches, one of the two. She is a very good filly."

Havlin rides winner on return from banJockey Rab Havlin rode the exciting Purser (Mizzen Mast) to an easy success at Lingfield yesterday on his return from a six-month suspension. The John Gosden-trained Purser, who ran fourth in the Solario Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at Sandown last month, eased clear to score by nine lengths. France-Galop suspended Havlin after he provided a sample with contained traces of cocaine, though the rider has always strenuously denied the charges, with the six-month penalty reciprocated by the British Horseracing Authority.

Gibbons suspended for two and a half yearsThe British Horseracing Authority (BHA) yesterday suspended jockey Graham Gibbons for two and a half years, after he pleaded guilty to swapping urine samples with another rider during testing at Kempton in December last year. He later provided his own sample which was found to contain a metabolite of cocaine. Gibbons, who tried to pass off a urine sample of fellow rider Callum Shepherd, who faced no charges, as his own, will not be able to re-apply for a new licence until June 2019.

In a piece of theatre to rival anything staged in the West End, Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin buying team stunned the Tattersalls sale ring on

Thursday as they outbid rivals Coolmore at 4,000,000gns for a daughter of champion sire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (Gr 1, 10f) winner Dank (Dansili) during the concluding session of Book One of the October Yearling Sale.

From the moment the filly, catalogued as Lot 418, h strode gracefully between the famous acorns, bids began to fly frenetically around the auditorium, with Kerri Radcliffe and David Redvers among those responsible for forcing her price past 2,000,000gns. But once Radcliffe saw off Redvers, the ultimate protagonists took to the stage: John Gosden - concealed beyond the far partition, with colleagues Anthony Stroud and David Loder - and Coolmore's MV Magnier.

No quarter was given as a rapid series of bids saw the price quickly climb to 3,000,000gns.

Here the pace slow markedly as Magnier, Paul Shanahan and Michael Tabor began to deliberate each move. However, their every 100,000gns bid was met with a resolute nod of the head from Gosden until Edmond Mahony brought his gavel down at 4,000,000gns.

"You very rarely have a filly of this quality come onto the market," said Gosden. "She's by a great stallion and out of a phenomenal racemare. She's an outstanding physical example. For her racing future and her breeding future she's a very exciting prospect - that's what we prefer to concentrate on."

Gosden went on to explain some of the thinking behind the commitment of such an eye-watering sum, which equates to £4,200,000 in pounds sterling.

"You must always think that the stud needs to be regenerated with new bloodlines," he said. "That's very important, for the racing programme and the breeding programme equally. If we see nice fillies by any stallion we'll be very interested, just as we would with a nice

Godolphin outbid Coolmore for Galileo top lot

colt. It just so happens that this filly, and the filly sold by Ballylinch at Goffs, are outstanding physical specimens with great pedigrees."

When asked if he knew who would be training the 4,000,000gns filly, already named Gloam, Gosden said: "Nothing of that nature has been decided at all. That will be done some time in the autumn."

The transaction also provided Norris Bloodstock, who offered the filly on behalf of breeder James Wigan - in whose silks Dank landed a brace of American Grade Ones - with a second successive Book One top lot, having also sold Glorious Journey (Dubawi) to Godolphin for 2,600,000gns last year..

"I could feel my heart going the whole way through! It's quite indescribable," said vendor Jenny Norris. She's always oozed class and has taken everything in her stride. It's a real honour for the Wigans to have asked us to prep her - I never thought we'd top last year."

The filly becomes second most expensive yearling filly to be sold at auction, giving best only to Al Naamah (Galileo), who fetched 5,000,000gns from Al Shaqab during the 2013 renewal of Book One.

The sale-topping transaction contributed to Godolphin's Book One spend of 15,930,000gns on 27 yearlings, of which 5,775,000gns was accounted for by the four Galileo yearlings, three fillies and one colt, acquired by Sheikh Mohammed's operation.

Astounding tradeOver the three days of selling 349

yearlings changed hands for an incredible 102,290,000gns - up 16 per cent year-on-year - an average of 293,095gns - a 29 per cent increase - and a median of 165,000gns - a gain of 27 per cent. All three metrics unsurprisingly registering record returns. The clearance rate stood at 79 per cent.

In total, 17 lots fetched seven-figure sums, while 46 sold for 500,000gns or more.

"The statistics for this week's sale are pretty astounding," said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. "Obviously the individual highlight was the 4,000,000gns Galileo filly out of Dank. She was not only the highest priced auction yearling sold anywhere in the world this year, but also the second highest priced yearling filly ever sold at public auction.

"The sale turnover of more than 100 million guineas is a record for the sixth consecutive year, more than double the level of only seven year's ago, and the average and median have also soared to unprecedented heights. In short, the record books have been completely rewritten."

All the hallmarks of the first two days of trade, primarily the rude health of the upper end of the market, were again in evidence on day three, as 116 yearlings changed hands for 34,686,000gns, an average of 299,015gns and a median of 152,500gns.

All Go for Cassandra's fillyCoolmore's MV Magnier may have missed

out on the sale-topping Galileo filly, but he had enjoyed better fortune earlier in the session when he secured the Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) filly out of King's Stand Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) winner Cassandra Go (Indian Ridge), offered by Ballyhimikin Stud, for 1,600,000gns.

"This family is so current, it's frightening,' announced John O'Kelly as the filly entered the ring, and with her page having received a Group

1 update as recently as Sunday, it's easy to see what he meant.

The athletic filly, catalogued as Lot 381, is a half-sister to Halfway To Heaven (Pivotal), the Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner who has hit the headlines in recent times as the dam of Rhododendron (Galileo) - winner of the Prix de l'Opera (Gr 1, 2000m) at Chantilly last week - and the Group Two-winning two-year-old Magical (Galileo).

The daughter of Invincible Spirit is also a half-sister to Group Three winner Theann (Rock Of Gibraltar), who foaled dual Grade One winner Photo Call (Galileo), and a sister to the smart Tickled Pink.

"I'm just delighted," said breeder Trevor Stewart. "I'm very happy she's gone to Coolmore. They've helped explode the family. She's going to a wonderful trainer - he's going to keep the family alive! Hopefully the family will keep working for them."

Stewart retained ownership of Cassandra Go's two-year-old Iffraaj (Zafonic) colt, who is named Scooter and is in training with Roger Charlton. The dam is in foal to Gleneagles (Galileo).

Magnier's name appeared on the docket of 11 lots over the three days - including eight bought in partnership with the Mayfair Speculators - for a total spend of 9,325,000gns. He also secured the final lot through the ring, the Galileo brother to Highland Reel and Idaho, for 240,000gns from the draft of Camas Park Stud.

Catalogued as Lot 502, the colt is out of the Group One-placed Australian-bred mare Hveger (Danehill).

Shadwell's seven-figure Dreams

Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell operation made two notable additions to its string during Thursday's session, having snapped up a pair of sublimely bred Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) colts. First came Lot 347, the son of five-time Group One winner Attraction (Efisio) at 1,350,000gns, whose two-year-old Frankel (Galileo) half-brother Elarqam carried Shadwell's silks to an impressive victory in the Tattersalls Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) on his most recent start.

That was followed later in the act by a 1,500,000gns spend on one of the catalogue's most highly anticipated lots, Lot 416, the colt out of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) heroine Danedream (Lomitas).

"Obviously he's by one of the world's top stallions," said Shadwell’s Angus Gold. "And he's out of a remarkable racemare. I saw him at the farm three weeks ago and liked him then. And I thought he behaved immaculately all the way through here - he has a very classy look about him."

The colt, a typical model for the sire, was bred by Shadai Farm's Teruya Yoshida and sold by Newsells Park Stud. He is the third foal out of his dam, who also has a three-year-old Frankel filly named Nothing But Dreams, and a two-year-old colt by the same sire - Solid Dream - on the ground.

The son of Dubawi became the first progeny of an Arc winner to be sold at public auction since Urban Sea's (Miswaki) daughter My Typhoon fetched 1,800,000gns back in 2002.

on both sides of the Atlantic this season, and ensured she was not walking away from Book One empty handed having made a pair of big-money acquisitions during Thursday's session.

First she struck at 600,000gns for Yeomanstown Stud's Lope De Vega (Shamardal) colt, catalogued as Lot 428, out of Group Three winner Dolled Up (Whipper).

The colt is a half-brother to promising French juvenile Fou Rire (Iffraaj), and rewarded a bold pinhook by his vendor, who spent 230,000gns on the colt as a foal.

Just a few lots later Radcliffe re-entered the fray to part with 1,000,000gns for the Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) colt (Lot 443) out of Elegant Shadow (Shamardal) offered by Deerpark Stud.

The Chris Waller-trained colt Performer (Exceed And Excel) looks set for a very bright future after making an impressive debut in

taking out the Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) in race record time at Randwick on Saturday.

After a slow beginning, Performer improved along the rails from his good barrier (two) and settled in fifth place, back about five lengths from a strong tempo.

Hugh Bowman then brought him with a well-timed run in the straight and after taking the lead on passing the 100m, the colt drew clear to score comfortably by almost a length.

Performer won in a very fast 56.82, which took 0.18 seconds off the previous race record of 57.00 set by Murtajill (Rock Of Gibraltar) in 2006.

In addition, Performer’s sectional times were outstanding, even taking into account that fast times were again the order of the day at Randwick.

Clocked from the 800 metres, Performer ran 200 metre sections of 10.42, 10.79 (400m in 21.21), 10.77 (600m in 31.98) with his last 200 metres in 11.32 to give him a very fast final 800 metres in 43.30.

The win marked a clear change in direction by the leading trainer Chris Waller, who previously bypassed racing juveniles to the degree that he would delay their introduction to racing until nearing the end of the season, often targeting the Queensland Winter Carnival.

Waller has now taken out the first two-year-old race of the season and he has done that very impressively, so much so that Performer’s debut indicated that he has the potential that he may be able to provide the stable with their first Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner.

Later in the Randwick program, the Premiere Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) saw a number of contenders for The Everest (1200m) have their final lead up to Saturday week’s $10,000,000 race.

Ironically, the winner In Her Time (Time

Thief) has not secured a slot for The Everest with three confirmed runners, English (Encosta De Lago), Clearly Innocent (Not A Single Doubt) and Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) finishing behind that Benjamin Smith-trained mare.

But all three enhanced their prospects with strong performances on the watch.

Firstly, time for the race was a fast 1:08.20 and that was only 0.14 seconds outside of the track record, which was set by another runner in The Everest in Deploy (Fastnet Rock) in taking out the Show County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m) on 19 August.

The fast tempo throughout the Premiere Stakes resulted in impressive closing sectional times with English returning some of the quickest.

English (second) ran her final 1000 metres in 54.06, last 800 metres in 43.33, last 600 metres in 32.37 with her last 400 metres in 21.67.

Clearly Innocent (third) ran his final 1000 metres in 54.45, last 800 metres in 43.77, last 600 metres in 32.90 with his last 400 metres in 22.09.

Chautauqua (sixth) ran his final 1000 metres in 54.27, last 800 metres in 43.66, last 600 metres in 32.66 with his last 400 metres in 21.61.

That all goes to make the inaugural The Everest an intriguing race, the quality field of 12 being the best sprinters currently available in this part of the world and accordingly it is likely to be run at a breakneck pace.

On The Watch still believes the six-time Group One winning sprinter Chautauqua, who

featured in this column recently, is still the horse to beat especially at weight-for-age and with the likelihood of a hectic tempo - conditions that will naturally suit his renowned brilliant final charge.

Saturday’s Randwick meeting also saw the running of one of its most famous races, the Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) with success going the way of a popular winner in Happy Clapper (Teofilo).

Previously placed four times in Group One races, Happy Clapper also gave local trainer Pat Webster his first win at that level and the winner provided a performance worthy of those achievements.

Carrying top weight of 57 kilograms, Happy Clapper was given a great trip by Blake Shinn, racing back in third place behind a very strong pace, which saw the leader Red Excitement (Excites) clock a fast mid-race 1000 metre section of 56.79 (from the 1400m to the 400m).

Happy Clapper went to the front from the tiring leader shortly after turning for home and he then dug deep in holding off Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas), whom he conceded five kilograms, to score by half a length.

Time for 1600 metre journey was a fast 1:33.17 and that was only 0.04 seconds outside

of the track record of 1:33.13, set by Ike’s Dream (Galileo) in winning the 2004 Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m).

Happy Clapper was timed to run his final 1400 metres in 1:19.32, last 1200 metres in 1:08.14, last 1000 metres in 56.69, last 800 metres in 45.16, last 600 metres in 33.87 with his final 400 metres in 22.48.

Another to record fast final sectional times was the Chris Waller-trained mare Foxplay (Foxwedge) who came from last after being ridden back in the field from her outside barrier (ten). She then ran on really well for a very good fourth, beaten just over three lengths.

Foxplay was timed to run her final 1400 metres in 1:19.12, last 1200 metres in 1:07.80,

last 1000 metres in 56.29, last 800 metres in 44.84, last 600 metres in 44.84, last 600 metres in 33.63 with her final 400 metres in 22.33.

A winner of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick in April, Foxplay has returned in top form with placings behind Winx (Street Cry) in the Warwick Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at her two prior starts since resuming – Saturday’s effort again confirming she looks primed for another run at the elite level this preparation.

While final word goes to the Godolphin-raced filly Alizee (Sepoy) who has excelled with brilliant wins since being ridden off the pace by Glyn Schofield at her latest two starts.

And Saturday’s victory in taking out the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) was a career highlight, with Alizee sprinting brilliantly from the tail of the field to score very easily in a most impressive performance in a time of 1:34.83.

Alizee was timed to run her final 1400 metres in 1:20.21, last 1200 metres in 1:08.57, last 1000 metres in 56.37, last 800 metres in 44.50, last 600 metres in 33.18 with her final 400 metres 22.16.

She has now been promoted to clear favouritism for the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday week and Alizee heads to Caulfield with strong prospects of winning her second Group One feature.

Won:All Too Hard @ Vinery Maiden Plate, 1550m, Canterbury, 4 October

The Chris Waller-trained Kaonic looked a highly promising three-year-old stayer in the making when breaking his maiden at the second attempt over 1550 metres at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Following his late-closing third over 1400 metres on debut at Warwick Farm on 20 September, he settled nicely in fifth place on the rails in the seven-horse field but was under riding from the 700 metres when the pace picked up noticeably.

Kaonic got to a distant second at the 200 metres but found an impressive finishing kick to run down Delos (Makfi) by a length, with a further length and a half back to Wild About Her (Big Brown) in third.

The colt is the only foal to date out of the Listed winner Fast Love (Fastnet Rock), who is herself a half-sister to the Group Three winner Kiss Me Ketut (Danroad) and the stakes winner A Chance To Dream (Volksraad).

His unraced second dam is the Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) mare Make Me Dream, who is a half-sister to the American Grade Two placegetter Green Lemon (Lemon Drop Kid), while his third dam is the French stakes winner Heavenly Calm (Diesis).

Further back, this is the family of former champion filly Midway Lady (Alleged), who won the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) in 1986 and is the dam of 2005 Oaks winner Eshwarah (Unfuwain) and Group Three winner Itnab (Green Desert).

He also shares a page with Brazilian Grade One winner Maltes (Red Runner), Group Two winner Greenlander (Green Desert) and 2014 Kyoto Kinen (Gr 2, 2200m) winner Desperado (Neo Universe).

Analysis: The Godolphin-raced filly Tiny Taj put up a very promising effort in winning here on debut. She settled well back in sixth place (with cover), tracking a strong tempo before commencing a wide move approaching the home turn. She moved up strongly at the 100m and finished a bit too well to score narrowly but quite impressively. She looks a filly with a good future. The Mark Newnham-trained filly Sweet Victory raced back in third place on the rails, before getting through to challenge at the 100m. She then battled gamely for a close second, also putting up a nice effort on debut.
