—GETTING TO KNOW YOU—

BENNY LANDERS, 40, grew up in the small town of Ballinroad, Ireland where his father also grew up. His mother is from Gaeilge re-gion called Ring (An Rinn) which lies on a peninsula about seven miles south of Dungarvan, Ireland. Landers attended St. Augustine’s college in Abbeyside, Ireland.

He has a small business in masonry, featuring stone, block, stucco, Dryvit systems and interior

whitecoating. This season, Benny works alongside Head Coach Michael Curley and General Manager Wer-ner Fricker III as the Assistant Coach of your Unit-ed German Hungarian Major Team. “I’ve been involved with the Majors for two seasons playing backup goalie for Jimmy Clark. I was happy enough to help out when needed.” he said. Before he became involved on and off the field with the Majors, Benny played for the German Hungarian Ultras. Landers came across the club in 2007. “There and then began my great love affair with the club,” he stated.

GERMAN HUNGARIANS REVEL IN

SEASON OF KIRCHWEIHFEST PREPARATIONS ARE BEING MADE FOR NOVEMBER 1st

The merrymaking autumn brings around celebrations, get-togethers and many a spread of festivals. Not one is as rich and colorful as the Kirchweihfest! Its beauty is ingrained in its contradictions. It is an ancient tradition, though it celebrates youth. Its rituals help us to maintain memories of the past yet they are entirely based on notions of the future. The sharing of “New Kirchweih Wine” and the universal symbol of fertility and life, the decorat-

ed “Rosmarein Strauss,” are natural items the people use to celebrate what is to come. Ulti-mately, the elated, youthful faces of the Kirchweihgruppe, their high-spirited dancing and vibrant calls of excitement characterize the most wonderful fest of the year. We revel in these fests in many ways and it all leads up to our own. We have many ways to connect to the world around us. Computers, cell phones and social media directly connect us to each other and to the global world we now live in. Our ethnicity and our traditions are not immune to this. We have kept up connections through technology with the other clubs we call friends in the states, the Banater Schwaben from Esslingen, Sing-en and the Eisenbahner Musikanten in Freiburg. These ties have even resulted in our mem-bers visiting these groups in Germany on their most recent tour. In the past few years it seems the visibility of our ethnic group has exploded on social me-dia. On multiple continents, we see images every week of German-Hungarians and Donausch-waben, in Banat, the Batschka, the Zips, and in Germany and Austria as well as the United States. The Banater Rosmarein – Jugendtrachtenverein in Temeswar, Romania is among the most prolific in the use of social media. We received permission to use the picture of the Kirchweih in Warjasch Timis, Romania from that organization. I urge every one of you to peruse their website (www.rosmarein.ro) and their Facebook page. If you do anything, I insist that you look at their photographs, as they are exquisitely beautiful. The Banater Rosmarein was founded in 1992 with the aim to “maintain the German culture in the Banat and pass it to younger generations.” Today they boast over 80 active members in two groups labeled, “Banater Rosmarein,” and “Hänschenklein,” for age eight to ten. The group is a member of the “Deutschen Forums der Banater Jugend” or German Forum of Banat Youth. Together with a number of other German groups in Temeswar, they are located in The “Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn” House, also known as AMG House. The images and video we see of groups celebrating Kirchweih like the Banater Rosmarein remind us that we are not alone in this world and that our traditions and customs are far from dying. With Technology and a smile, we can share who we are and what we do with the world. This autumn like any other, the United German Hungarians, our Chairmen and our Cultural Group are preparing for our Kirchweihfest on November 1. It will have all the colorful rich-ness, the youth, the memories and the future. Please join us so that we can share our fest with the world!

—PLEASE COMMUNICATE— Words are everywhere. I do not just mean in this newspaper. I do not just mean in organized written thoughts or in books or papers. I am not only referring to academic works. We use words every day for communi-cation. We speak to one anoth-

er. We write to one another. We even use images to convey ideas to the world around us. Think about every time you take pictures with your family, or when you post images on Snapfish, Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Why should your participation in the Unit-ed German Hungarians be any different? The answer to that question is this: It shouldn’t. This Newspaper, Monthly Progress, has doz-ens of possibilities for content. The only place we can seek content from is from you the members. We need your input and your con-tributions.

Expect DJ music and prizes for best costume. Food will be available for purchase and the bar will be open. Join your club family and friends for a Halloween party. (details on page 4) Kirchweihfest—November 1 is the date of our most important, traditional and success-ful event. “In Deutsch-Ungarn gibst Kehrweih. Dort kehren wir ein!” That comes from a little song we learned in the Cultural Group called “Drei Schale Kaffee.” It’s a nice easy to re-member tune and if you come to the Kirch-weih, your editor would be happy to teach it to you. Our Kirchweihfest is when our hall looks the most beautiful, our true members have the biggest smiles and our young people have that spark in their eyes. As is customary the Kirchweih group will perform in Banater Schwaben Tracht, the “Geldherr” will say the “Spruch,” the “Rosmarein Strauss” will be decorated and the Heimatklänge Orchestra is providing musical entertainment. So, German Hungarians, put on your vest, your hat or your shawl and come to the Kirchweihfest! Fall Penny Party—Our Women’s Auxiliary has scheduled their Penny Party for Novem-ber 19. Many prizes will be won. Tickets are $3.00 and include coffee and cake! Setup will take place on Wednesday at 10:00am. Trachtenfest—As the second part of Living History Days 2014 we are hosting a Trachten-fest on November 29. The evening of ethnic German pride will be one to remember. More details about this event will be in fu-ture issues of the Monthly Progress. Club Christmas Party—On December 21 our club members will celebrate the Christmas holiday together with a performance by the Cultural Group including a Nativity scene. More details on these events will come!

—A THANK YOU— Concordia Trust Donates to Cultural Group

Cultural Group Chairman, Susi Hartmann recently reported that the Concordia Trust donated $100.00 to our Cultural Group. The Concordia Trust is as a charitable foundation that promotes German language education and cultural programming. The German Hun-garians and thank the Trust for their dona-tion to our youth!

—’LANDERS’ CONTINUED— Around 2007, his former club had won their league, and he and his team had the opportunity to play in a Champions League Tournament with all the other teams in the Philadelphia region. Benny’s team then played a great game against us. After this, he was asked to play with our O-30 team. Then as mentioned, he played for the Ultras and eventually the Majors. Throughout all his years, he continues to play for our O-30 team. Benny’s favorite events held at the club are Oktoberfest and Rocktoberfest because each is a “great night out, of dancing and music...last but not least it surrounds one of Ireland’s favorite pastime. (I don’t think I need to spell that one out!)” When asked about the friendships he made at the club, Benny explained that he has made some of his best lifelong friends during his time with the club. He also stated that he likes what the club has to offer in all capacities. Landers described the German Hungarians like a family. “Being a foreigner like many of the great people who founded this wonderful club, who were born and raised in Europe...What I like most is its history and the proud tradi-tions on and off the field, rooted deeply in-side the club.” he said, “I guess it’s like a little piece of home for me here in Philadelphia, USA.” You can ask his fellow players, the other members of the staff or his fans in the corner of the stands; Benny is an awesome addition to the Major Team Staff. By his own admis-sion, Benny “Ain’t no Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers,” so for now he will stick to soccer but maybe we can get him into some dance shoes one day! Describing the club atmosphere, Benny stated, “The door’s always open, there’s al-ways a smile and a big hello and I’m forever welcomed back. Friends will come and go, but the club will always be there. What more could you ask for?”

—BEHIND OUR NAME— In last month’s column, we discussed the various buildings that our club has called home and the names we gave them. Now this month we will finally tell the story of how our club went from the Banater Män-nerchor to the United German Hungarians of Philadelphia and Vicinity. The Handwriting on the Wall Why don’t we begin with the text itself? "The year 1938 witnessed the ‘handwriting on the wall’ for BANATER MAENNERCHOR. At a directors’ meeting on October 2nd of that year Matt Noll, the finan-cial secretary, announced that he still had 400 1938 membership cards on hand, but felt certain that he could dispose of at least 300 of them if the name of the organization were changed. Wenzel Osti immediately made a motion, which was carried unanimously, that all chartered German-Hungarian clubs in this area be contacted in order to arrange a gen-eral meeting at which a general merger should be discussed. At the directors’ meeting on June 21, 1939, a special five-man committee reported that the People’s Meeting (Volksversammlung) had founded a new organization. It was thereupon decided to call a special general membership meeting for the 29th of June in order to let the gen-eral body decide whether it wished to merge with this new organization. At this special meeting on June 29th the committee report-ed that every effort was being made to unite all the German-Hungarians in this area in one organization to be known as the UNITED GERMAN-HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINITY, and the members of BANATER MAENNERCHOR were strongly urged to sup-port this movement. After quite a lengthy discussion it was decided unanimously by the general body to join the new group. At a spe-cial general membership meeting on October 24, 1939, it was decided after some discus-sion to accept the name UNITED GERMAN-HUNGARIANS OF PHILADELPHIA AND VICINI-TY, and so, after almost twenty-nine eventful years, the BANATER MAENNERCHOR not-so-quietly passed away." (Rack) It seems complicated. In more recent ver-sions of the history, this section has been simplified. Wording has been changed and so forth, but what really matters in this story is the idea of unity. Like our original purpose, the change in name was to bring more peo-ple into the fold. President Frank Kirsch wrote in 1966, “Let us remain “UNITED” for in Unity there is Strength.”

—FROM OUR PRESIDENT — Dear Members, Thank you for your support with Oktober-fest 2014! Those who volunteered at the event were an integral part of the success of the festival. The number of new faces and familiar faces over the weekend was ex-tremely pleasing. Thanks for inviting friends, family, and spreading the word about our club. Our German heritage and soccer tradi-tions are alive and strong! Here is to another great festival around the corner; Rocktoberfest!

ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW:

—136th OKTOBERFEST— After marching in the 44th German-American Steuben Parade, on Saturday, Sep-tember 27, we returned to Oakford to find a steady stream of cars pulling into the grounds, a cold stream of beer flowing from our taps and an plenty of hot wurst passing over our kitchen counters. The day looked as if it would be a great success! We have a unique pleasure at our club in that our Cultural and Schuhplattler groups have a wide array of dances and dance styles in their repertoire. We thank all of the danc-ers and their leaders for their want to per-form and provide entertainment at our fest. By the prime time of the day the kitchen line was out the door and the beer drinkers (and there were many) were served by a few veterans of your Major Team. The tents and the tables were full and the Heimatklänge Orchestra was rocking and rolling the entire picnic grove. While the Buwe swung axes sending woodchips into the crowd, many of our elder members moved inside to boil and peel more potatoes for Sunday! One couple of grandparents even broke their curfew to stay and help! More food and beer were ordered for Sun-day before the gates even closed the night before! Even Sunday’s crowd was slightly more festive than usual. Many guests from our fellow clubs joined us and we were hap-py to have them. At 2:00pm, our fans were excited to see the Major team win a competi-tive game 3-2 against West Chester in the Stadium. It is always exciting to win at home! The weekend was a success and the smiles on our members faces proved that. Sitting in the picnic grove next to the Heimatklänge Orchestra on Sunday night, proved enjoyable as the final notes were played and the last beers were drunk. Oktoberfest was over and I think we all were satisfied!
