—FEVERNOVA TAKE DISNEY— The U-17 Girls team, Fevernova, was re-cently in Orlando Florida for a national col-lege showcase tournament. This tourna-ment, The Disney Showcase, is a very high ranking and prestigious tournament held at the ESPN center in Orlando. This is the sec-ond year that our team attended. The tournament consisted of three games from December 31 to January 2; we had one game a day. The first game was against Fair-field Optimist SC Red Swarm from New York and we finished this with a 1-0 win. The girl’s second game was against North Mississauga SC Panthers 97. This team was from Canada and was our first ever International game ending with a tough 1-0 loss. Fevernova’s last game was a very competitive match that ended in a loss to Lous Fusz SC Becher of St. Louis, Missouri with the score 4-0. Even though our team did not have the best re-sults on the field, the girls received a high amount of exposure to the many college coaches. Overall, this tournament has been a

great experience giving us the chance to play teams from all over the county both last year and this year. It is also an amazing feeling to play the games on pristine fields and a grand complex such as ESPN. We had a great expe-rience in Disney on and off the field!

—WORTHY OF THANKS— Often times we let slip from our minds and our manners the very simple “Thank You.” Though it may be uttered often over our tongues it does not carry the same weight as when it is written and especially published. After all our Monthly Progress is a record. It is a perpetual history. Therefore the coming thanks will be marked down and hopefully mean that much more to the recip-ients. We have had a phenomenal winter with snowfall upon snowfall. If you happen to come across our Vice President and Soccer Director, Andy Weyershaeuser on the grounds of our club give him a hearty pat on the back as thanks he certainly deserves for his snow removal in our parking lot. Thank You Andy! Our once tattered bar rail was recently re-upholstered with new vinyl. House Chair-man, Werner Fricker III, gathered a group with just the right skills for the task. Thank you to Werner III and his team that consisted of Joseph Hartmann, Josef & Anna Hartmann and Werner Fricker Jr. Your hard work will surely be appreciated by those members of ours inclined to the drink! Another thank you goes out to Entertain-ment Chairman, Cindy Proll who recently presented the club with a fantastic framed photograph of our Fahnenträger with our flag and our dance group in the parade at the Gaufest in Cleveland. The photo is hang-ing beside the flag in the dining room!

—AN ANECDOTE— I want to illustrate something to you. So I will tell you a little story. The Athlete, in his crew cut hair, his “athletic” shorts in an non-athletic setting walks down the little street of a college cam-pus. With his black mid-calf socks of his grandfather rising from his running shoes and the jewelry of his grandmother in his ears he strolls leisurely towards the writer. The writer notices immediately the shin-ing red t-shirt emblazoned with the shield of his social club. A small grin curls in the corner of the mouth of the writer and as they pass one another, the stoic eyes of The Athlete give not a glance his way. He chuckles to himself at the irony in the situation. The writer ponders betting cold, hard cash on the notion that The Athlete could not and would not recognize him were they at that social club. He chuckles again at the notion. The writer sleeps, eats and breathes this social club. It is a place he works, plays and learns. It was the first place he wrote! His family, his friends are all there and have been for decades. The writer has fantastic knowledge of its cultural, athletic and most importantly social history and development. He has worked in these three facets there and has done his best to move them forward! The writer smiles. And he has never once until today looked upon the face of The Ath-lete. And The Athlete never upon his. How can this be?

—A LOOK TO THE PAST— The Phila. Old Timers Soccer Association has existed for many years and has inducted many local soccer players and officials into their “Hall of Fame,” among them many of our members. As far as our club was concerned this sort of fell by the wayside for many years but in the 2000s we once again submitted members for this honor. Among those so honored during this time were: Peter Piskei, Heinz Guckert, Adam Piskei, Betty Ann Kempf, Arthur Jethon, Henry Wagner, John Paul, Al Nothum, Joe Hutflus and Karl Kreutzer. There may have been more but unfortunately our records to not include them. We have however discontin-ued to submit candidates for this honor. Why? Our Youth Soccer Camps were run by our Senior Men’s Program with Bob Wilkinson as the director. Besides Bob, coaches were members of our Major Team and other well known local players. These camps have been quite successful and have continued in some form or other to the present day still under the direction of Bob Wilkinson. Under Andy’s leadership as our Soccer Director, he has taken the youth program to an-other level by building on the accomplishments of the Adult program as well as his own ex-perience as a product of the German Hungarian Junior and Major teams. In 2010 we had 7 boy’s teams and 5 girl’s teams at various ages. These continue today and are quite competi-tive and have earned much success. Our Youth Soccer academy provided instruction to youngsters between ages of 3 to 9 and was quite successful under the direction of Jennifer and Michael Lowry and their coaching staff. Beginning in 1960 at our 50th anniversary, we began to present awards at ten year inter-vals to members for their dedicated service to our club. These individuals received an Ehren-wuerdig German Hungarian Pin. Approximately 130 received this award prior to 2000 and 24 received this award in 2000. In 2010 another 24 were thus awarded. The next awards should take place in 2020. In 2000 our Cultural Group consisted of the Schuhplattler Group, a Junior Dance Group and a Children’s Dance Group. Today we consist of the German Hungarian Dancers, a Schuhplattler Group and a Children’s Group. Many of the 2000 Junior Dance Group and the Children are now the members of the Schuhplattler Group and not only plattel but do com-plicated folk dancing, Viennese waltzes, etc. They all perform at our Kirchweihs which had evolved from a three day tent festival to a three day clubhouse festival to a one day festival to an evening celebration which we now celebrate in early November. As always this is our most important German Hungarian Traditional Event and is always a huge success. Our Children’s Group still continue to provide entertainment for our Club Christmas Party as they have since their founding in 1965. They also continue to attend the Gauverband’s Annual Kinderfest which has been held by various mid-Atlantic area Schuhplattler clubs for twenty years. Since the Gauverband began including Children Schuhplattler Einzel Dancers, our children also perform Schuhplattling and participate in the Mid-Atlantic Youth Einzel Plattler Competition. Our Women’s Auxiliary in 2000 was about a dozen senior women although the younger generation always helped whenever needed. Now, although many of the seniors are still active, the next generation is the driving force. The Spring and Fall Penny Parties are still the Women’s most popular events. As originally, the Women are involved with all aspects of our club and can be found in the kitchen, behind the bar, or wearing an apron holding a brush cleaning our clubhouse. The same spirit of care takes place on our Grounds and Fields as a dedicated group “The Groundhogs” under the direction of Steve Grabowski and Barry Harvey make it their person-al mission to maintain and improve our fields.

—’PAST’ CONTINUED— Other Grounds chairmen during this peri-od were John Reiter and Chris Schrier. Since the year 2000, our Kitchen, Rental and Catering areas have gone through a se-ries of changes. In early 2000, Andy Weyer-shaeuser and Jim Pack overlooked this com-mittee; in 2001, manager Dennis Wilfong and chef Mike Bavij continued with catering and rentals; later when the BVV made our club their home, their cook, Mike Solcanski led our kitchen staff; after Mike’s sudden death, we were left in a void in our operations but soon Joe and Tina Joyce were announced as our catering specialists. The Joyces did not work out for us and the Fronceks were hired for this job. After a while Heidi Weyershaeus-er became our cooking specialist under the chairmanship of Janet Malofiy. Heidi still helps out whenever necessary but over the years we have hired two cooks who cater our dinner events. Recently Janet chose to retire from her Cultural Group Chairman and is now the official Kitchen-Catering chairman and does an excellent job. Kathi Noel was our Entertainment Chair-man into the mid-2000s. With her retirement from this position, our president Bill Galgon assumed this position and with his com-mittee worked untiringly. In the beginning of the 2000s the Bar Chairman was John Koschewitz but since about 2003, Sasha Malofiy has assumed this job and continues in this position. He has overseen the modernization of both the new-ly named “Trophy Bar” and the “Alpine Bar” and seems to enjoy this job. Recently, Werner Fricker III was appointed as House Chairman. It is his job to see to the proper maintenance of our club building. Werner follows Charlie Young, Joe Hartmann and John P. Hubert who also served during the 2000s.

—SOCCER SHORTS— On Sunday, February 9, the U-9 Girls team, Strikers, won the 2014 Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association (EPYSA) Indoor Cup! Congratulations to the girls, our only youth team that entered the state indoor cup! Good Job:

—STEUBEN PARADE NEWS— On the evening of January 16 at the Cannstatter Volksfest Verein, elections took place within the Steuben Day Observance Association of Philadelphia & Vicinity. The following Executive Board Positions were filled. Tom Markow, President & General Chairman Werner Fricker Jr., First Vice Chairman Jim Schwartz, Second Vice Chairman Earl Asimos, Treasurer Kathi Noel, Recording Secretary Karl W. Werner, Corresponding Secretary

These officers serve a two year term within the association. Various clubs in the German-American Community are involved and these officers come from a variety of them. Tom Markow is a representative from the Lancaster Liederkranz. Jim Schwartz is also president of the German American Police. Earl Asimos has a storied history in the com-munity with the Police as well as the Kolping Society. Karl Werner is from the Cannstatter. The German Hungarians are proud to have Werner Fricker and Kathi Noel on this board. Susi Hartmann was appointed last year as the Chairman of the Queen Selection Committee and will continue to hold that position in in the year 2014. As a club we need to do our best to sup-port the Steuben Parade in Philadelphia. We can contribute to the greater cause for Ger-man-American visibility in our city. We need to attend German day, this year hosted by the Erzgebirge on June 22, with greater num-bers! We need to support the parade and our fellow clubs as best we can. We need to call ourselves together as a club to make a greater and more exciting presence at the parade in September as well. We certainly are capable of it!

—MUNICH OKTOBERFEST— The Gauverband Nordamerika has an-nounced that they will be taking part in the Trachten-und Schützenzug (Parade) at the 2014 Oktoberfest in Munich. This is also the same year they will be promoting the 50th anniversary of the Gauverband Nordamerika and the 100th anniversary of the BV Edelweiss Chicago. All Clubs and members of the Gauverband Nordamerika are invited to participate. All names had to be submitted no later than August 2013. Those interested will receive guidelines concerning Tracht and rules for the parade which are set up by the Festring München eV, the governing body of the Pa-rade and Oktoberfest. Our Gauverband stat-ed that this is an “opportunity that doesn’t come around very often, and it is an honor to participate”. They asked for a good showing at the parade to show everyone how proud we are of our customs and traditions. They further asked all who would like to partici-pate to submit their names.
