Gandhi was a very importantman in history. One of his mostimportant actions was the SaltMarch he led in March of 1930.Thousand of people joinedGandhi on this 241 mile march. He chose salt because itaffected all of the Indians. Hefelt that salt was a necessity oflife along with air and waterand that it is one of the onlycondiments that the poor have. When they arrived at thebeach, “Gandhi picked up ahandful of salt on the beach, challenging the prohibitionagainst the collection or sale ofsalt except by the colonialauthorities” (Kaplan, pg. 95).

NATO• The North Atlantic

Treaty Organization(NATO) was one of themost successfulalliance’s throughouthistory. The U.S. led theNATO because it wasdirectly threatened bythe Soviet Union. Thisshort part on thisalliance really graspedmy attention becausethe NATO is so famousbecause of itsdomination andsuccess.

From Torture toImprovement

• When Augusto Pinochet becameleader in 1973, he did a horrible thing. He tortured and murdered thousandsof people. He eventually created aneconomic dynamo which in turnbenefited the entire country. In 1989at Tiananmen Square, hundreds ofstudents were massacred by DengXiaoping. He “then went on toimprove the quality of life of morepeople in a shorter time than perhapsever in economic history” (Kaplan, pg.107). Both of these cases completelyshocked me because it isunbelievable how a person can dosomething so horrible, then turn rightaround to do something so great.
