Karl Marx (1818-1883)

Philosopher, Sociologist, Historian

Karl Marx’s theories on social structure of Capitalism classifies three structures:

1. Bourgeoisie 2. Petty Bourgeoisie3. Proletariat

• The bourgeoisie were the rich who owned property and corporations. Leaders and highly influential in society.

• Petty Bourgeoisie middle class. (can be owners of small businesses/shops)They are highly skilled laborers, craftsmen.

• Proletariat the primary working class with little or no education. They provide labor for money, they could have specific skills in work.

Labor Theory of Value & Alienation• Marx criticized Capitalism • Work should have a social context, meaning,

purpose, and relatedness.• The product’s value was set by the bourgeoisie.• Arbitrarily determining the value, does not reflect

and appreciate the skills of workers. • While the proletariat are producing product/labor,

they are powerless in purchasing or accessing these very same products. It is because the bourgeoisie set the price too costly.

Antonio Gramsci’s Cultural Hegemony

• Gramsci agreed with Marx’s criticism of Capitalism and so he challenged the ruling class.

• He explained the bourgeoisies have and maintain their power by convincing society that their ideas and norms are the best and most needed by society.

• Consider this clip and consider their mannerism and message about their product.

http://youtu.be/wZkZb9I-g3s• When society is convinced by the standards of

bourgeoisies, Gramsci calls this state as a cultural hegemony. (when social norms accept the norms of the bourgeoisies).
