PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

WORKING BEEJilliby Public School is seeking assistance on Saturday 17th November to help in our working bee. Even if you could spare a couple of hours it would be greatly appreciated. Children are unable to help during the Working Bee, however supervision will be provided in the Library from 9am-12pm. Please see the working bee form attached to the end of this newsletter. There is a list of the tasks need-ed to be done (not sure we will get through them all) and you can nominate which task/s you would like to help with. The form asks you to complete your name and if you have any qualifications please list them with Licence numbers etc. You don’t have to be licenced for most of the tasks so it is only relevant for things like building, plumbing and electrical. Please fill out the form and return it as soon as possible so we can determine if it is worthwhile to go ahead with the working bee and purchase the equipment/items needed.

AWARDSJilliby PS is trying to promote a positive learning culture among our students. Teachers are selecting a student from each grade in their class who try their best, listen well when the teacher is speaking, improve in something they’re working on, and/or demonstrate the kind of work ethics which lead to strong learning and achievement. These students are rewarded with their choice of ice block from the canteen each Tuesday. If your child mentions they have received an ice block from me, please reinforce how important it is to work hard and let others learn too. Children love to be praised especially by the people closest to them!

BUSH FIRE SEASONJilliby Public School has prepared a Bush Fire Emergency Evacuation and Management Plan. I will be presenting this plan at the next P & C Meeting. Jilliby Public School is designated as being in a Bush Fire Prone area and as such have preparations in place if needed, to ensure the safety of all its members. All staff at Jilliby Public School have completed the ‘Preparing and Responding to Bush Fires’ Work Health and Safety module. The 2018/2019 Bush Fire season is upon us already. It is important that people living in bush fire prone areas also make and discuss their Bush Fire Plan as a family so that everyone is prepared should it be necessary. This is a link for your information: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare

JUST SWARMING IN & SWARMING OUT! During the week we had a swarm of bees decide to take up residence under one of our playground eat-ing tables. A big thank you to Alexia Martinez who came to our rescue! Students were kept safely away while we waited for an Apiarist to come and remove them. It was an interesting event and I’m sure the bees are grateful for being taken somewhere safe!

2019 EnrolmentsI continue to be in awe of the wonderful community feeling at Jilliby Public School. I am fortunate to have had the pleasure of meeting many of the parents and it is heart warming to see their dedication to school and the determination to ensure Jilliby Public School continues to grow and improve. This year we have 8 new kindergarten students enrolled for 2019 and we are hoping there may be a few more. If you know any prospective parents, please encourage them to come and see our school or consider enrolment. Thank you to everyone who is praising our school in the community and helping it maintain a reputation of reliability, strong learning and caring staff.

CARES ExcursionWe have had our excursion to CARES this term. Students that attended had a great time. During the first session, we learned about the rules that we need to follow when riding our bikes and scooters. We then had some time to practice some skills to receive our license. Everyone passed the skill test and received their CARES bike license. After lunch we were allowed on the bike track to put our skills and knowledge to the test. Only a few of the students lost points from their license. It was a great day.

Kindergarten OrientationThursday 1st November the new Kindergarten students for 2019 attended their first Kindergarten orien-tation classroom session. The children met their new classmates, explored the school library where they met some of the current Kindergarten and Year 1 children. We read stories, met Mrs Honey in our big book and completed some craft activities. There was time to play and explore the classroom and get to know some of our Year 5 Buddies for next year.

K-2 Movie NightKindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students have been invited to attend a special movie night activity at the school. This event will be held this Friday 9th November starting at 4pm. Students will enjoy an evening of games, dinner and a movie. If you would like your child to attend please return your permission note and payment to the office by Wednesday 7th November.

P&C MeetingThe next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 28th November at 6pm in the staffroom. All parents & carers are welcome to attend.

Library ReportThe next session will be this Thursday at 9:15-10:45 when they will meet other Year 5 students and participate in more activities to familiarise them with Jilliby Public School.

A big thank you to the students who continue to demonstrate responsible borrowing skills with on time returns of borrowed books from the library.

A thank you also to the effort made by families to dig deep into toy boxes and book shelves, even under the beds to return overdue library books. Returning library books ensures a fair opportunity for all members of JPS to have full access to our amazing selection of books.

K/1 have been learning about Koalas with the assistance of the amazing text, “Koala” by Clare Saxby. Have a look at the great display they have created with accompanying information facts. Next project…”Willbee the Bumblebee”.

2/3/4 are excited to start their transformation of a currently blank Southern wall of the library with their knowledge and creative art skills based around the text , “Journey of a Sea Turtle” by Mark Wilson. Watch this space over coming weeks for their efforts.

4/5/6 recently delivered great cinquain poems to add to the display of “Fire” by Jackie French.

Final week for library borrowing this term will be week 7. If all books could please be returned to the library by week 8 this would be most helpful in finalising and tidying of the library in preparation for a bigger and better 2019.

Thanking you,Leisa Bull

4/5/6 CLASSROOM REPORT

Welcome to an exciting Term 4

We have lots of different things being planned for this term. In class we are continuing with our learning units. In Literacy we are developing our vocabulary knowledge by reading different information reports, while in Writing we are looking at note taking and how to transfer that information into the correct structure of a formal information report. Below are some of the paragraphs we wrote about Koalas.

KoalasKoalas are a mammal that make a variety of noises. If they are distressed they can make very loud vocalizations. When the females are protecting their young they create a very loud pitch noise. When the male is distressed they make a very low bellow at 27 hertz. Koalas are an Australian animal that needs to use these sounds for communication and if being threatened by humans. By Lilly Year 4

KoalasKoala’s have round ears that have long white hairs growing out of them. They have a spoon like noses and a short tail to help them balance in the tree’s. Male koalas weigh about 27.5kg and they live up to 15 years old they can be 24 to 33 inches tall. Baby koalas ride on their mother’s back until they are about 5 years old.By Maddy Year 5

Koalas DietKoalas are herbivores marsupials that spend most of their time lounging around in trees. They exclusively feed on eucalyptus trees which most animals stay away from due to their toxicity. Koalas have built a special resistance to the toxicity and retrieve most of their water supply from the leaves. They feast on 50 different types of eucalyptus plants out of hundreds of others native to Australia. They also prefer to feast on different types every seasons! What a fussy little animal!By Zoe Year 6

Part of this term’s homework is to look at some of the current events that are happening in the world. This is a great way of increasing your child’s general knowledge while improving their vocabulary. Students have been asked to write a paragraph each week about a current, world event. All students are watching BTN (Behind the News), an ABC news program designed for kids, as part of Literacy. These paragraphs can be hand written or submitted through Google Classroom or Google Docs. Here is a link to BTN http://www.abc.net.au/btn/

In Geography, the Year 4 students are researching the Taj Mahal and looking into how people’s perceptions of this site influence how it is protected. While the Years 5 & 6 are looking into a range of different connections that Australia and China have. The students have already discovered some interesting connections.

STEPHANIE ALEXANDER KITCHEN GARDEN

This week Year 2/3/4 will participate in their final session for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program for the year. The menu will include Potato and Rosemary Pizza, Fresh Tomato and Cheese Pizza, Corn and Polenta Fritters (g/f), Horseradish Sour Cream, Master Salad and Seasonal Fruit Plates. If you have any of the following items growing in your gardens we would appreciate any donations to the kitchen before Wednesday 7th November. Any donations of additional ingredients are also appreciated.

Potatoes Salad leaves Cherry tomatoesRocket leaves Shallots Basil leaves

Tomato Cucumber CapsicumLemons Variety of melons, oranges,

seasonal berries, grapesOlives

Mozzarella Bocconcini Parmesan cheeseSour cream Grapes

The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program re-commenced for term 4 last Wednesday with our mini chefs from 4/5/6.An item from the menu for this session had been requested from Phin in 2/3/4.Phin had asked me in term One “Julie.. When will we make Pizza again?“ So, I promised him before the year was over Phin before this year was over.

Our senior class worked together as a wonderful team to create- Potato and Rosemary Pizza, Fresh Tomato and Bocconcini Pizza, and Corn and Polenta Fritters served with a class favourite - Horseradish sour cream and a Master Salad. Rock melon, fresh blueberries and a mixed berry coulis to end this meal along with a surprise treat of homemade vanilla ice cream! The Mandolin slicer was used for the first time in class to slice the potatoes into even thin slices for their potato and rosemary pizza. (Don’t worry they always used the safety guard! No Fingers were lost in this class haha)

The Rosmarinus commonly known as Rosemary were harvested from our memorial garden, as the mini chefs plucked the needles from its stems, there was a waft of its aromatic smell similar to pine. The Prep teams for our pizza toppings and our pizza dough rolling teams worked in sync with each other. But our poor oven just could not keep up, with the speed of our Pizza Chefs!

A new ingredient Polenta was introduced to the class this week. We had a look at polenta in its raw form and then again, once cooked using the boil and stir method. When the polenta reached its porridge like texture, it was passed on to our fritter team that were patiently waiting with their corn kernels, sliced shallots, minced garlic, beaten eggs, flour and seasoning. They measured and weighed all ingredients, then added and mixed the ingredients through the cooked polenta. The well-seasoned mixture was then passed on to the final stage. The frying team! Tablespoons of the mixture were carefully dropped into electric frypans to fry off. The masters of the frypan cooked these fritters to perfection! Golden and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Absolute Perfection!

The Masters of our Garden Salad never disappoint with their bowls full of colorful ingredients. Mixed leaf, sliced tomatoes, chopped cucumbers, sliced red capsicums and some olives and bocconcini. The boys then rewarded themselves after plating up with the olive brine… Hmmm.

I’d like to say Thankyou to 2018’s class of 4/5/6. It has been another wonderful year cooking with you. I hope you have enjoyed the Program as much as I have! Master Phin I hope you and your class are ready for some fun and good food in the kitchen tomorrow! Its time for your Pizza Making skills to shine through!

Have a Great Week and Happy Cooking! Julie
