Course Outlines
SIMS Core - Individual Pupil Core Data
Duration: 1 Day (9.15am – 3.30pm)
Course Outline:
This Course covers the main procedures for maintaining accurate and useful Data within SIMS.
Contents include:
Searching the Database and Locating Pupil Records Edit Existing Pupil Records Enter New Pupil Records, including Addresses and Contacts Use Links to other Data areas, including Attendance, Assessment and SEN How to Import and Export a CTF How to Run Pre-Defined Reports
Course Requirements:
No previous knowledge of SIMS is necessary Experience in using a computer and windows
Target Audience:
Staff who are new users or have limited knowledge of SIMS and have responsibility for using and maintaining the Database
New starters this term
Outcome:
To Search and Locate Pupil Data To Maintain Existing Pupil and Contact Data To Create New Pupil Records To Create, Export and Import a CTF Run Pre-Defined Reports

Discover Overview
Duration: 1 hour (including 15mins coffee and registration)
Outline:
SIMS Discover is an application designed for high performance Data Analysis. Discover brings key information to you with straightforward drag and drop actions. Discover is the next generation of Analysis Software for SIMS, which allows a wide range of Data from SIMS to be interrogated in a clean, modern interface. Quick, clear Data Analysis allows earlier interventions to ensure you maximise the performance of your Pupils.

The Relationship between Discover and SIMS The Discover Interface The Range and Scope of the Pre-Defined Discover Graphs Generating a Venn Analysis
Target Audience:
Senior Leadership Team Headteachers
Outcome: An understanding of Discover and how it will allow you to collect Data once, use many times,
analyse in appropriate ways and help intervene earlier and work smarter.

General Pupil Lists and Class Lists in SIMS
Duration: ½ Day (9.15am – 12.00pm)
Course Outline:
This Course introduces the user to a new and simpler way of generating Registration Group Lists with page breaks, basic Pupil Lists and Lists of manually selected Pupils in SIMS.
Contents include:
Running Student Lists and Registration Group Lists Running Student Analysis Reports Choosing the Type and Size of Font Adding Columns including Blank Columns Sort Orders and Filters Exporting Reports to other formats e.g. Excel
Course Requirements:
Suitable for users new to SIMS or existing users
Target Audience:
All SIMS users that have not yet attended this Course All SIMS users that wish they could produce Reg. Group Lists as easily in SIMS as they
could in STAR All SIMS users who are not yet familiar with these type of Reports Day to day users of SIMS New Starters this Term
Please note that users of Nova-T may be familiar with these types of Reports but for Primary School users and non-Nova-T users, these are a new feature.
Outcome:
To have a clear understanding of how Pupil lists can be produced in a quick and simple way in SIMS, outside of the usual Reporting area.

SIMS Attendance Reports & Analysis
Duration: ½ Day (9.15am – 12.00pm)
Course Outline:
A look at the reporting and analysis facilities within SIMS Attendance.
Contents include:
Individual pupil reports Whole group pupil reports Attendance analysis of groups of pupils Selected pupil reports User-defined groups of pupils Attendance letters Displaying Attendance summary information on the Home Page
Course Requirements:
Users should have a basic understanding of procedures for recording attendance in schools.
Target Audience:
Attendance Officers Staff who need to produce attendance letters to parents Staff who need to produce pupil level and analysis data relating to attendance
Outcome:
On completion of the course users should have clear understanding of how to report on attendance data held in SIMS.

Profiles Overview
Duration: 1 hour (including 15mins coffee and registration)
Outline:
This demonstration will show the production of high quality, fully customisable reports for parents based on Profiles, which uses editable pre-defined comments and/or free text
Data recorded in SIMS Assessment, Attendance and other areas of SIMS can be linked to a report
The structure and format of the report is created within a Microsoft Word xml template The completed report is automatically attached to the pupil record
Target Audience:
Senior Leadership Team Headteachers
Outcome:
An understanding of how SIMS Profiles may be used to produce pupil reports to parents. Further information on support for the set-up of Profiles in your school is available from your LA SIMS support team.

Common Transfer Files (CTFs)
Duration: ½ Day (9.15am – 12.00pm)
Course Outline:
This course introduces the user to a new way of importing CTF’s allowing a match to existing pupils before import as well as outlining the procedures for creating and managing the transfer of CTFs between schools
Contents include:
Statutory requirements and the importance of the CTF Adding destination schools Creating full and partial CTFs Importing CTFs Uploading and downloading CTFs from the DfE Secure Data Transfer site (S2S)
Course Requirements:
Suitable for users new to SIMS or existing users
Target Audience:
All SIMS users involved in the administration of pupil admissions and leavers Day to day users of SIMS
Outcome:
To have a clear understanding of how to manage and maintain the transfer of pupil records from school to school using CTFs.

SIMS Housekeeping Routines
Duration: ½ Day (12.45 to 3.30pm)
Workshop details:
This workshop is an opportunity for schools to have a good “tidy-up” of their existing data and to learn some useful routines for helping to maintain accurate information.
School staff can work on their own school SIMS data via a remote connection to check, amend and update various pupil data in SIMS.
Contents include:
Checking contact details are correctly linked to pupils Making sure addresses are correctly linked so the “little house” appears where it should Updating Parental Salutation and Addressee fields Address tidying routines Deleting unlinked contacts Creating and producing Quick Letters Updating Parental Mailing Points Adding “Favourite Reports” to your Home Page
Target Audience:
School Staff who are responsible for using and maintaining the pupil database.
