(Falkirk) suddenly veered off the rails pinballing Mr scorsese (nZ) (Pentire) and Little big Man (nZ) (showcasing) hopelessly to the outside.

debt Collector was luckily seeing them all at that stage and after avoiding any backwash, Rodd let his horse take the suck along the rails. From that point onwards, debt Collector, whom Rodd said he had had a hard time niggling at in the first half of the race, travelled a lot better.

at the 400m, the double was well on the cards going with the way he was jogging, but the remaining task ahead still looked nothing short of insurmountable, even if the Long Course gave some leeway for a spectacular comeback.

but once Rodd got debt Collector into overdrive, the complexion of the concluding stages shifted shape in the twinkling of an eye. debt Collector produced an electric turn of foot that saw him swallow up his rivals, almost sweeping off Magnum (nZ) (Per incanto) in the process, before careering away to arguably one of the most stunning finishes ever seen at Kranji.

the Victorian-based barree stable-owned gelding in the end recorded a soft two-length win from a very gallant infantry (nZ) (tavistock) with Magnum again letting down his connections and colourful Hawaiian shirt-clad fan club (a salute to the 80s iconic Magnum Pi played by tom selleck) to run third another half-a-length away. the winning time was 1min 34.4secs for the mile on the Long Course.

normally a picture of nonchalance after his horses win, trainer Cliff brown was barely able to speak this time.

“i liked where he was in the race, but when they turned for

home, i’d be happy if he had run third or fourth,” he said. “His last 400m was just incredible. He’s a horse that

doesn’t excite me in trackwork but i’m really excited now.“He will go for a much deserved break now. Hopefully he

will be my derby horse next year.”Rodd for one was more no-holds-barred in the way he

waxed lyrical about debt Collector. the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey would know a thing or two about speedy conveyances, but said what his third singapore group 1 winner (after stepitup’s Panasonic Kranji Mile and Raffles Cup last year) did was almost freakish.

“i’ve ridden a lot of winners all over the world, but that was one sensational win, especially as he beat a very good bunch of three-year-olds this year,” said the australian hoop.

“His turn of foot was just out of this world. He finished so hard that he ran on top of them. He won with authority in the end.”

underrated sprinter Salamanca (NZ) (alamosa) made light of a near six month absence from

the racetrack when he kicked off a new winter campaign with a demolition job at new Plymouth on the weekend.

the hardy five-year-old gelding made it win number seven from just 23 starts when he accounted for a handy rating 85 field over 1200 metres in the hands of promising apprentice danielle Hirini. Hirini’s three kilogram claim was put to good effect and despite still carrying the clear topweight of 59kgs, the gelding had plenty in reserve as he cruised to the line to win untouched by a length from his nearest rival.

Classy galloper Salamanca was back with a vengeance at New Plymouth on Saturday

“gore guineas winner Wafer will have his first run back next weekend so i’m excited about that,” he said.

“if he comes up well we might look at slipping him over to australia for a couple of runs there. Leeds is also nearly ready to return with the Winter Cup in mind for him while Mighty Matt is also a very handy winter sprinter who will be stepping out soon.

“it’s probably the best winter team i’ve had in years so i’m looking forward to the coming months.”

– nZ Racing desk

“i was fairly confident leading into the race as he was the best performed horse in the field by a clear margin and his work had been very good in the build-up,” said trainer Mike breslin.

“He always goes well fresh and despite having not raced since the new Zealand Cup carnival i thought he was a good winning chance.”

breslin believes the gelding will take plenty of improvement from the run as he heads towards his main target for the winter, the Listed Powerworx Opunake Cup in late July.

“He was only really eighty percent ready on saturday so he will derive enormous benefit from the run,” he noted.

“We’ll keep him ticking along over the next couple of months although, as he goes well fresh, you won’t see him for another 3-4 weeks.

“i’ve got the Opunake Cup as his main target so whatever we do will be with that in mind.”

breslin is also excited about his team for the winter with several high class gallopers set to return shortly.

He Kin FLY takes step up with aplomb

Progressive three-year-old He Kin Fly (NZ) (darci brahma) showed he could become one of the stars of next season when he made it two wins from two starts

at Rotorua on the weekend.the son of darci brahma (nZ) (danehill) and stakes

winning mare shi Kin Fly (nZ) (shinko King) had created a huge impression when breaking maiden status at te aroha last month which saw him installed a warm favourite to repeat the dose in rating 65 company on saturday.

that was despite the misgivings co-trainer andrew Forsman had about the way the Rotorua track was playing with those drawn near the fence having trouble making ground against runners who were scouting wide in the closing stages of earlier races.

“i’ve always said it is the hardest jump to make in racing when you go from a midweek maiden to a saturday rated 65 event so there were some concerns before the race,” he said.

“the way the track was playing wasn’t a help either as his inside draw looked to be a disadvantage. in saying that he does have huge ability so we were just hoping that might be the decisive factor.”

the talented gelding made light of any fears as he jumped well and put himself close to the pace without urging from

He Kin Fly (inner) digs deep to record his second consecutive victory, much to the delight of one

punter who was close to the winning action.

Forsman and senior training partner Murray baker will now assess how the gelding recovers from his exertions over the next few days before any future plans are made.

“He’s not a horse who will cope with the really deep tracks of winter so whether he has another run or goes to the paddock will be determined by how he pulls up from this one,” he said.

“Whatever he has done this time in is a bonus as we don’t expect to see the best of him until next preparation. He has all the attributes to be a very handy galloper so a break will do him the world of good and hopefully he can come back just as well in the spring.”

rider Matthew Cameron. angled to the middle of the track by Cameron as they headed for the winning post, He Kin Fly established a winning break and held that to the line despite being pressed hard by underthemoonlight (nZ) (el Hermano) in the shadows of the winning post.

“He is a very talented prospect and although they got close to him at the post he still went another 800 metres after they finished without being headed,” noted Forsman.

“His breeding suggests he will get up to a middle distance so there will be a lot of options for him next season once he learns a little more about the game.”

Lightly raced mare Diamond Cut (NZ) (guillotine) threw her bridle in the ring for some major spring assignments when she cruised to victory for part-owner and trainer

david Haworth on the weekend.Haworth, who prepares the five-year-old mare with

daughter emma, was keen on her chances at new Plymouth despite the mare making her first appearance over the 1600 metre journey of the Landmark Homes sponsored contest.

“she is a mare i have a lot of time for as she has a touch of class about her in everything she does,” he remarked.

“Her other owners have been great as they have let us take our time with her as she has needed to strengthen up and

mature mentally as well as physically. this preparation has seen her take some giant strides and i can see her being even better in her next campaign.”

Haworth admits he had some concerns in lining his charge up for her first start past 1400 metres but believes she will be at her best over a middle distance in the future.

“she has done really well to date but i’ve always said she will be suited best between 1600 and 2000 metres,” he said.

“she handles most track conditions so i wasn’t worried when it came up a slow 8 for saturday. i was more concerned about it being her first run over a mile and when she was wide for most of the way i wondered if she might weaken when the pressure went on.

“as it was she travelled beautifully and was very strong to the line so she ticked that box nicely.

“she has a very high cruising speed and is plenty tough so we are definitely looking forward to the spring.”

Haworth will assess the mare’s condition over the next few days before deciding on any further runs in this preparation, noting that once the tracks turn heavy she will definitely be

Punters who had their fingers burnt when hot favourite Turncoat (NZ) (swiss ace) flopped on debut at

trentham last month may have been feeling a little better with themselves after the strapping swiss ace gelding comfortably made amends on his home track on saturday.

sent out at cramped odds on debut, the allan sharrock trained gelding never raised his supporter’s hopes when he dwelt at the start and finished well back that day. this time the three-year-old gelding bounced straight to the front from the barriers and travelled easily throughout the 1200 metre contest. slipped some rein by rider Jonathan Riddell approaching the home bend, turncoat lengthened stride impressively and dashed away in the straight to win Turncoat is ready for business as he parades before the first race at New Plymouth on the weekend

debut but he missed the jump and a few things went wrong for him that day,” explained sharrock.

“i’ve made no secret of the high regard i hold him in so i was pretty happy he proved me right this time as he’s only going to get better as he matures and learns what it’s all about.”

Raced by his breeder gerry Harvey, turncoat has impressed sharrock from the moment he stepped onto his property.

“He was a bit of a rogue early on but once we straightened that out he has just gone from strength to strength,” he said.

“He is a big, powerful type who has run some amazing sectionals in trackwork so i think he has a big future ahead of him if we can retain him here in new Zealand.

trainer Mark Walker is still playing the conservative card even after Rockfast (Fastnet Rock) took out

the $80,000 gingerbread Man 2011 stakes over 2000m on sunday.

the new Zealander had all along been careful about not overselling the Fastnet Rock four-year-old as a singapore derby prospect, even if at this stage the te akau Racing stable-owned gelding is his only eligible contender.

He thought the 65-point rater needed to beat favourite Zip a dee doo dah (nZ) (Cecconi), himself a derby aspirant, on sunday first, let alone picking up more points before he can face the starter in the glamour showpiece on July 10.

Ridden by back-from-suspension jockey Manoel nunes, Rockfast was simply impressive when he emerged from the rear division at the 300m to go and hold at bay all comers in the Kranji stakes C race.

Zip a dee doo dah lost no marks as he had to thread a passage through to settle for third one length off air Force One (nZ) (Pentire) in second place. both placegetters are also in the running for the derby.

When asked if the singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge and ultimately the group 1 emirates singapore derby (2000m) were in Rockfast’s sights, Walker’s answer was yes and no.

Rockfast in winning action at Kranji on Sunday

“He won’t go for the 1400m leg (stewards’ Cup on May 29) and i’ll see how he pulls up,” said Walker who has yet to win a derby, here or even in new Zealand in spite of his 20 group One wins there.

“He’s won well today but it’s still a big step-up to go towards the derby. i thought Zip a dee doo dah would be hard to beat today.

“nunes rode him for luck and they got the split. He then motored home for a nice win.

“i think the rain that came yesterday took the jar out of the track and that definitely helped him.”

Rockfast has now recorded three wins and two placings for stakes earnings past the $130,000 mark for his connections. He was a $410,000 purchase for te akau Racing’s david ellis at the 2013 national Yearling sale

series from the Curraghmore draft. He commenced his career in new
