he Fire Safety Week was well observed by the Fire and Rescue Station at JJ Nagar,
in Mogappair East last week.As per the Central Govern-
ment’s notification, April 14 to 20 is being observed as Fire Safety Week all over India.
When Mogappair Mail caught up with the Station officer, S Rajendran, in his busy campaign drive, said, “The aim of the campaign is to create awareness among the people on the types of fire accidents and the prevention methods. Every year we start the campaign by paying tribute to the victims of fire accident. Then we conduct several brain storming sessions and demon-strations.”
While talking about the well sought after programmes he said, “Mock evacuation drill for the school students was the major hit among the programmes we conducted. In this programme, at every school we will have an assem-bling point and the students
will be told about the mock fire alarm and instructed to assemble without taking any properties such as bags and lunch boxes. Within a minute they all should assemble and are trained on how to react if one person gets caught inside. That is the whole idea of drill. They enacted role plays. We assembled there and taught them to save the ‘victims’. The mock evacuation drill got over after the ‘victim’ was taken to the ‘hospital’. The students enjoyed it so much.”
According to Rajendran, the fire accidents are classi-fied into four types - A Class, B Class, C Class and D Class. “The products which could catch fire and be gutted or charred will come under A type - even human beings will come under that category. Oil, Gas and Metal will come under B, C and D types respec-tively. To contain B class fire only foam type extinguisher can be used and for C type Co2 gas should be used. People should know the type and act immediately,” he explained.
The team of Fire Station Officers distributed pamphlets to the residents of Mogappair and Annanagar at various places during the week. They also joined with other team officers to create awareness programmes in various parts of Chennai such as Indian Oil Corporation, CMDA Building and Tata Consultancy Service at Spencer Plaza.

Musical nite for a causeInnerwheel club of Vriksham, Mogappair started last year
with a strength of 36 like minded ladies have been working for a cause. Apart from many successful project have adopted two government schools in Mogappair. There intention now is to help those suffering from terminal diseases like cancer. Vrik-sham has taken a vow to help minimum 5 patients for whom the treatment is unaffordable each year.
In view of this a fund raising music nite with super singer ce-lebrities has been organised on May 7 (Sunday) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Amma Arangam, Shenoy Nagar. From the entire profit of the programme, half amount will be donated for the treatment of cancer patients and the balance for the school renovation.

Velammal duo win medals in UzbekistanHaving produced
many international stars Velammal MHSS is known as a nursery of chess. Every year there are umpteen students making their school proud by winning titles abroad.
The latest to be in-cluded in the roles is
Savithri Sri of class V who won a silver in the under-10 category and Rakshitha Ravi of Class VI, silver medallist in the under-12 category. Both the medals were won at the Asian Youth Chess championship held at Tashkent, Uz-bekistan.

urning of garbage including plastic wastes that re-lease noxious
fumes continues unabated in parts of the neighbour-hood. Residents complain that they often come across some people burning wastes especially on the main roads of Nolambur near Mogappair West.
Since some of the roads here are elevated from the ground level, both sides lead to accumulation of garbage, more particularly on vacant plots. Cattle also roam there for graz-ing. According to some locals, it has become a sort of routine on the stretch for one or the other resident who is involved in cleaning work to set fire to the garbage and also on the dry plants. Smoke emanating from the fire causes inconvenience to the passers by and nearby residents including chok-ing and irritation to the eyes.
Selvarani, a resident in an apartment located nearby, says, “People have the habit of disposing the garbage in the vacant grounds. They don’t have
the patience to clear them as and when the Corpora-tion of Chennai workers come. They do come in the mornings. But other than garbage, shrubs also grow there and over a period of time become dry. While clearing them the land owners set fire to them as they find that as an easy option. They tend to forget that how much they pollute the environ-ment and also cause risk to others’ lives.”
Suguna, who is a house-wife in the same locality, says, sometimes, we cough continuously due to the emanating smoke. Kids are also getting affected. It needs to be addressed at the earliest. Law has to be implemented strictly and action needs to be taken on the offenders. We can spot many cattle coming here for grazing. They may also get hurt if they set fire continuously like this. Since we have many vacant grounds here, we have no control over it. They also burn the Seemai Karuvela species to stop them from growing. Uprooting them is difficult and so they cut the branches and the remaining part would be burnt.

effective remedies for sunburns
Summer can be a cruel time, when the scorching rays of the sun can cause havoc in our daily lives. For many, despite their best efforts to protect their skin from sun damage with sunscreen, they end up with painful, itching and swelling sun-burns.
Here are a few easy remedies to quell the discomfort and reverse the day’s rays.
HydraTIoN: A sunburn, like any kind of burn, can be drying to the skin and often the time spent in the
sun getting the sunburn causes dehy-dration. Just as diet is important in avoiding sunburn in the first place, hydration is important to help the recovery process. Drink lots of water and herbal teas to keep yourself hy-drated.
aloE: Aloe vera is an age-old rem-edy for sunburn. It can be very cool-ing, but the paste from the original plant works better than a gel or lotion. If you use a gel, look for a high qual-ity one without preservatives.
aCV aNd HErBs spray: Apple cider vinegar (diluted) is considered an effective remedy for sunburn. It is more effective when combined with a strong tea of soothing herbs. Boil one cup of water and add two table-spoons of dried mint leaf, lavender flowers, and dried plantain leaf. Re-move from heat and let cool. Once cool, strain out the herbs. Add an
equal amount of apple cider vinegar to the cooled tea mixture and pour into a spray bottle. Spray on burn as often as needed to cool and soothe the pain. Repeat at least for three days.
EssENTIal oIls: Essential oils like lavender, chamomile and helichrys-um can also help soothe the burn and speed up recovery. Mix them in a water bottle and spritz on the skin as needed.
CoCoNUT aNd CasTor oIls: Coconut oil acts as healing oil that gently re-lieves your skin from painful sun-burn, cracking, blistering and peel-ing. Castor oil repairs and rejuvenates the skin from the damage of overex-posure to sun. Mix equal amounts of both and apply twice a day for best results.
One can also apply coconut butter if you don’t have oily skin.

For the first time in the state, public can approach the nearest e-seva centre for making necessary changes in their ration cards, ac-cording to a press release.
Till now, the cardhold-ers had to approach their respective fair price shops from where they were drawing their monthly ration quota on specific days to carry out changes. This posed a problem to
the consumers, who were unable to visit the shops on the specified dates as it affected their other daily chores.
The new move by the government of roping in e-seva centres has been welcomed by all sections. The state at present has more than 10,000 such centres operated under banners of TN Arasu cable TV, primary agricultural
credit societies and village level poverty alleviation groups. The centres pro-vide services relating to all government schemes, including applying, verify-ing and validating official documents of the citizens.
With the ongoing dis-tribution of smart PDS cards in the state, the e-seva centres were further enabled to handle requests for changes in the cards.
Community and salary certificates, proof of res-idence, certification of destitute women, first gen-eration learner certificate, birth and death certificates of the Greater Chennai Corporation, payment of electricity bills and water and property taxes of the Corporation were the other services currently being provided by the e-seva cen-tres across the state.

Just as summer set in and residents were look-ing to buy affordable ice creams and lassi from the State-owned Aavin outlet at the Mogappair East In-dustrial Estate, they were in for a pleasant surprise as the Aavin outlet near Padikuppam Road has reopened after being shut for a while.
No reason was cited for the earlier closure, though on the Park Road in Anna Nagar Western Extension an upmarket and spacious Aavin parlour has come up with many options for short eats to go along with the tempting ice creams,
flavoured milk and lassi.Mogappair Mail had in
the past written about how the Aavin outlet located about 50 metres away from the Bank of India branch near Mogappair Industrial
Estate Road was popular among the locals, more so for the affordable rates at which various dairy products were sold and the quality of the products offered.
"The outlet was shut-down for quite some time. Even a 'To Let' board was put up outside disappoint-ing many of us. Now we are happy that the outlet has been reopened two days ago," said a customer.
"The previous lessee had closed down. We got the lease now and white-washed the premises be-fore reopening it," said the manager of the new stall, who did not want to be identified.
Last week Mogappair Mail spoke to some regular customers who were upset that the outlet was closed. Sugumar, who stays near Bank of India, said, "I used to get curd, ghee and
sweets from this outlet. We get milk also. The patron-age was quite good to my knowledge. I don't know why they had closed down suddenly.
The Cold milk with dif-ferent flavours such as bad-am, pista and strawberry were very soothing during summer. When the storm water drain construction work was on the outlet was closed for some time."
Saranya, who is a do-mestic help in that area said, "I used to get ice
creams for Rs 10. People like me are so fond of it as it is very economical. The Kulfi was also too good for Rs 20. I don't know any other Aavin outlet nearby."
"Milk Khoa sold by Aavin is my favourite. It is very fresh and delicious. They are bringing from the government factory outlet and so we trust these products a lot. I preferred buying ghee only here," said Chandra, a resident of Maraimalai Adigalar Salai.
