Motorists proceeding from Anna Arch to Anna Nagar Round-

tana are encountering a threat due to a sharp ‘U’ Turn being taken by errant drivers in viola-tion of rules at the Shanthi Colo-ny turning posing enormous risk to their safety.

The Shanthi Colony Road, which was confined to partial one-way traffic for a few years, was opened up both ways for vehicular movement a few months ago following the com-pletion of the work on the Chen-nai Metro Rail on the parallel Anna Nagar Roundtana-Thiru-

mangalam Road. Consequently, vehicles coming from the Sunda-ram Medical Foundation end and proceeding to Anna Arch were not allowed to take a right turn to proceed to Anna Arch and be-yond. Instead they have been di-verted towards the Anna Nagar Roundtana where they can take a ‘U’ Turn to go to Anna Arch.

As part of efforts to regulate this new vehicular movement, the Chennai City Traffic Police had set up barricades on the road turn-ing left towards Anna Nagar Roundtana and installed a board stating that no ‘U’ Turn is al-lowed at the point. However, scores of motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, are violating

this on a daily basis causing much difficultly to riders of oncoming vehicles from Anna Arch.

“The other night when I was proceeding towards Anna Nagar Roundtana from Anna Arch sud-denly I saw a scooter rider take a sharp ‘U’ Turn at this junction. I had to quickly swerve to my right to avoid hitting him. In the process, the driver of the car coming behind me had to press the brakes hard to bring his ve-hicle to a screeching halt. The car just stopped short of ram-ming my bumper, all because of the traffic violation caused by the two-wheeler rider,” complained Lokesh, a businessman and resi-d e n t o f I C F C o l o n y i n

at least some personnel of the Chennai City Traffic Police must be posted here to regulate it and impose penalty on violators,” pointed out Kamalanathan, a worker in private company, who takes this route on a daily basis. “Alternatively, the Chennai City Traffic Police could allow vehi-cles coming from the Sundaram Medical Foundation end and proceeding to Anna Arch to take a right turn at this spot and a traffic signal can b e i n s t a l l e d here,” he sug-gested.

In a development that brought the much-needed relief for a cross-section of commuters from Mogap-pair East, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) resumed its bus services on its normal des-ignated route this week. The MTC operates a few services from Mogappair East, the most popular among them being the 7H route buses which goes to Broadway and the 27N which terminates at Anna Square.

For nearly a month these buses were not being operated on its normal designated route – i.e, Mogappair East Bus Depot – Masudi Bus Stop – Velammal School – J J Nagar Police Station – Col-lector Nagar. Instead it was diverted via the Panneer Nagar Road before taking

the Mogappair-Thiruman-galam Road to proceed to their respective destina-tions. The change in route on the Mogappair East-Collector Nagar route was necessitated due to road digging operations taken up by the Chennai Corpo-ration and Chennai Metro-politan Water Supply and S e w e r a g e B o a r d (CMWSSB or Metrowater in common parlance) near the Pachaiyappar Salai-Pari Salai intersection close to the mosque and on the Bazaar Road at the entry point of Collector Nagar.

Due to this diversion, commuters, especially those from the lower eco-nomic strata of the society was put to much difficulty as they had to spend on share auto rickshaws for commuting the distance till Collector Nagar (and also on the reverse direction) or had to traverse the distance

on foot.“I am really happy that

the MTC has resumed operation of its bus ser-vices on this route along designated bus stops. I usually wait for the ordi-nary white board 7H ser-vice as it costs only Rs 5 to go to Flower Bazaar in Parrys from here. Some-times I used to travel on the yellow board bus where it costs Rs 13 for the same trip. When the bus services were suspended, I was forced to use share auto rickshaws, who charged Rs 15 to go to Thiruman-galam from Masudi bus stop. It was not something that I could normally af-ford,” recalled Muthulak-shmi, a street side fruit vendor who takes the route regularly.

“For poor people like us the MTC bus service is a saviour of sorts on daily basis,” she added.

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO) - better known by its popular former name Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB for short) has dug up a deep trench on the left hand side of the Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road for laying underground cables. Work on this started over a week ago. The road has been dug up from the Thirumangalam Bus Stop up to the Park Road Junction and mounds of earth

The digging up operations has eaten into the pedestrian space and also reduced the motorable space on the busy road. It has also uprooted the livelihoods of numerous road-side vendors including fruit sellers and pushcart eateries, which used to function on the platform along the road, which sees hundreds of motorists head to Mogappair, Wavin, Ambattur Industrial Estate and beyond.

“Well we are not complain-ing because obviously every government agency catering to essential services such as electricity supply and water supply has to undertake period

expansion and development works. It is inevitable consider-ing that the neighbourhood has been expanding at a fre-netic pace in the past 10 to 15 years. This means new under-ground cables with greater electricity carrying capacity have to be laid on and off. But we would have appreciated if the work was carried out dur-ing summer.

Now that we get intermit-tent spell of rains there is a threat of the work being de-layed as the soil becomes slushy,” said Edison Mathews, a resident of a EWS (Eco-nomically Weaker Sections) layout located behind the Welcome Colony on the Thiru-mangalam-Mogappair Road.

Jordanian gets lung transplantAn hospital in Mogappair con-

ducted a successful lung transplant on Baker Ahmed, a 39 year old person from Jordan, suffering from interstitial lung disease for the last five years. The surgery was con-

ducted by two teams, with one led by Dr Madhu Sankar. The lung belonged to a 32 year old brain dead accident victim in Salem. The Doctor is a resident of Pan-neer Nagar, Mogappair.
