Some years ago resi-dents in and around Ambattur, who were

starved of entertainment zones, were excited as the State Government an-nounced a grandiose project to convert the Ambattur Lake into an eco tourism

spot. Sadly, today they are staring at a much polluted lake and are wondering if they would even manage to reclaim it, leave alone con-verting it into an eco tour-ism spot like the now famed Eco Park in Chetpet.

An ongoing audit of water bodies commis-sioned by the non-govern-mental organisation Arap-por Iyakkam, has thrown up some shocking findings about the Ambattur Lake, which is spread across an area of over 440 acres. The audit revealed that the sur-plus course of the lake, which carries excess water to Korattur Lake, another western suburban water body, is filled with water hyacinth. “Once a water body is taken over by hya-cinth, it would prevent flow of water and the excess

water would not flow into the next course,” explained a member of Arappor Iyak-kam.

“We conducted the au-dit with a team of 12 mem-bers and found the Ambat-tur Lake was also heavily polluted with sewage that is being illegally let into it by various industries and households. It would be no exaggeration to say that the water body is being used as a dump yard. Particularly we found that sewage col-lected from localities such as Ayapakkam, and Thiru-mullavoyil, which lack underground drainage fa-cility, are surreptitiously let into the Ambattur Lake,” said the member, request-ing anonymity.

According to Arappor Iyakkam, the Ambattur Lake was originally spread

across 650 acres. “Over the years encroachments on the water body led to it shrinking to about 440 acres. Even mud road was laid in some places,” the member said. He added that from the streets located near a private hospital an illegal drainage travels up to a kilometre to connect to the lake. “Imagine sewage from about 3,000 house-holds being dumped into a natural water body. There can’t be a worse pollution than this. Unless civic au-thorities wake up and con-struct underground drain-age in all localities in and around the Ambattur Lake, we may at one point of time not be able to reclaim the water body, similar to what happened with the Cooum River,” he warns.

The application status for Tamil Nadu Engineer-ing Admission (TNEA) 2017-18 was made avail-

able on Anna University’s website on Thursday night. Anna University conducts TNEA every year for ad-

mission to engineering courses at various institu-tions across the state. Counselling for TNEA is

slated to begin once ran-dom numbers are gener-ated and rank lists are published.

A suspected leakage in the sewer pipeline has led to contamination of Me-trowater supplied through piped connections to un-derground water sumps in households in parts of Mogappair East over the past fortnight or so. Resi-dents are complaining that the water supplied in the sumps is black in colour and has a bad odour as well.

“With peak summer drying up groundwater, our bore wells have gone

dry and we turn to the Metrowater sumps for our daily needs. But the water that we get is not potable at all making lives difficult for us,” complains Menaka, a resident of Pari Salai in Mogappair East.

“I ended up cleaning my underground sump more than three times in a month. Even after that, when I opened the Me-trowater pipeline, I was horrified to find that the water was foamy. The con-taminated water has black layered particles. I stopped taking head bath for a

while due to this. We have complained about this to the officials of the Chennai Metropolitan Water Sup-ply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB or popularly called Metrowater) and they have promised to look

into the source of sus-pected leakage. But overall the water quality has suf-fered due to the scarcity all over the city. In many plac-es, people don’t even get this water. We are making do with this for now as we can’t afford to buy tanker loads of water from private water suppliers,” says Ran-

garajan, a resident of Mogappair.

Arumugam, who runs a provision shop off Ori Sa-lai, says, water supplied here has smelled bad in the locality for a few months now. “So people started using the water only for washing and cleaning. For cooking and drinking, they depend on packaged can water, though even its qual-ity cannot be taken for granted.

Many a times we also suspect where from they bring the water? Nobody is keeping them on check,”

he adds. “We are left with no op-

tion other than depending on the potable water being supplied by the Metrowa-ter in tanker lorries, but it is not that easy. Since de-mand is high, we have to

Waterproof cosmetics may be available in the market and probably even get the job done, but most of these products are chemical-based. Options like aromatherapy and other natural skin care solutions can save your skin better during the monsoon, say experts.

• During monsoon, people with oily skin must use astringent. People with dry to normal skin can use a toner, which is ideal just after washing face with cold water. This works well to open the pores of skin and remove

all pollutants from the face.

• A good moisturising face mask just before go-ing to bed helps in getting rid of dry skin.

• Rain brings added moisture, and with it, skin issues. It is very impor-tant, therefore, to keep it clean. However, instead of using harsh soaps, try using natural oils to nour-ish it instead. A variety of oils have antimicrobial properties, like neem oil, which will benefit the skin in the long run.

• Avoid heavy make-up

and dark eyes in mon-soon. Smokey eyes are a strict no. Curl eyelashes and use waterproof mas-cara instead of a regular one to prevent smudging. Fresh colours of pink, red, orange and light brown are great for the season.

• In the rainy season, added moisture brings out the oil from underneath the skin causing face to appear tired, and could also cause acne. To avoid this, do a special cleanse every day using essential oils meant for oily skin. These include jojoba, tea tree, and lavender, to

First, wash your face with warm water then gently rub a few drops of oil into your skin. Wait a few minutes and clean using a warm microfiber cloth. This removes the excess oil and nourishes your skin from within.

• Waterproof make-up is great, but do remember that it may be induced with chemicals that often harm the skin. Instead of merely washing or wiping it off, use olive oil or al-mond oil to remove the make-up from your body.

Do not use harsh soaps as the skin gets a double beating from both the soap and the make-up.

• Maintaining healthy lips in monsoon may be-come a little tricky even if waterproof or non-trans-ferable types of lipsticks are used. Use a bit of jasmine or lavender oil on the lips before applying lipstick. This will act as a natural layer of lip balm. It also acts as a foundation for the lipstick and avoids potential damage to lips.

• Eyebrows and eye-lashes need particular

care when the skies are cloudy. Go in for regular threading sessions and reduce or completely avoid eyebrow pencils.

For eyelashes, a few drops of castor oil ap-plied to the roots of your eye lashes will make them grow thicker and longer, making them look more natural and beauti-ful. Rubbing some rose-mary oil or lavender oil onto the eyebrows can also help promote their growth after the thread-ing sessions.

The road, if you could call that so, has not just been nar-

rowed due to the lack of motorable

space but is uneven virtually giving it the

topography of a hilly area. With the pre-monsoon season on, residents are worried about what fate would befall them when the rains arrive in due course later this year.

“I am not even sure if you could call this a road. This pathway has an un-even surface. It was not like this always. We had a prop-

er tar road here until some months ago when workers engaged by a contractor to undertake some civic works dug up the road. They did not relay the road and instead dumped the debris to cover it and now this road has become un-motorable,” says Girija, who identified herself as a long time resident of Ag-athiyar Salai.

“We have had frequent cases of two-wheeler rid-ers or those riding pillion on scooters or motorbikes losing balance and skid-ding or falling off here.

Even walking on the road without hurting your toes is quite a task for us,” adds Girija.

For car drivers it is a true test of their driving skills to pass through the road balancing the vehicle on the uneven surface and avoiding an oncoming vehicle. Those familiar with the scene here, try to avoid this road and instead drive through alternative routes. But for local resi-dents, we have no other option but to drive on this road. At nights it is worse,” complains Ramaiah, a

middle aged resident of the locality.

“Often times we find motorcyclists encountering a flat tyre. Sharp stones that protrude from the road end up puncturing the tyres. There have been cases of people rushing their children to school ru-ing the punctured tyres in the morning hours. When-ever roads are dug up, they should be re-laid thorough-ly, or they should penalise the contractor. This is a basic lesson but never fol-lowed here,” rued Swami-nathan, a resident.

Escalators at Egmore closed

The escalator on plat-form 5 and 6 at Chennai Egmore Railway Station will not be available for use by passengers from June 19 to 28. The esca-lators are being closed for major overhaul work during the period.
