No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.

The sampling performance of the semivolatile aerosol dichotomous sampler (SADS) was tested and com-pared with existing vapor and particle sampling methods: filtration, electrostatic precipitation, and vapor ad-sorption. Seven different test fluids were used to generate test droplets, and their concentrations and com-position in each phase were evaluated using gas chromatography. The amount of wall loss inside the SADS was also evaluated. Combined vapor and particle concentrations for each test aerosol were not statistically different from one another as a function of test method. However, the particle concentrations estimated us-ing the SADS were statistically higher than those from the other methods. Because it can avoid evaporative losses, SADS will sample semivolatile aerosols more accurately than common filtration methods and may often yield higher particle concentrations than can be measured using the other methods.

Airborne Fungi in Dwellings for Dairy Cows and Laying Hens

Kristina Matković, Marija Vučemilo and Bara Vinković, Archives of Industrial Hygiene & Toxicology, Volume 60, Number 4, December 2009

The air of animal dwellings can contain great amounts of bioaerosol com-posed of dust, bacteria, fungi, and endotoxins. The composition may depend on animal species, building construction, animal accommodation, and micro-climate parameters, to name just a few factors. Pathogens contained may be a serious threat to animal and human health. The aim of our study was to analyse the fungi aerosol content in a stable housing dairy cows and in a coop for laying hens over the three autumn months of 2007. In both dwellings, the most common were the fungi Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., and yeasts, fol-lowed by Cladosporium sp., Fusarium sp., Mucor sp., Scopulariopsis sp., Al-ternaria sp., and Rhizopus sp. Our results are entirely in line with values re-ported in literature and are at the lower end of the range. They call for fur-ther investigation that would eventually lead to setting air quality standards for animal dwellings and to developing reliable monitoring systems in order to ensure safe food and safe environment.

Dermal Exposure of Pesticide Applicators as a Measure of Coverall Performance Under Field Conditions

K. Machera, A. Tsakirakis, A. Charistou, P. Anastasiadou and C. R. Glass, Annals of Occupational Hygiene, Volume 53, Number 6, August 2009, pages 573-584

In this study, the field performance of two coverall designs used by pesticide applicators was determined. Dermal exposure was measured during 22 applications conducted with 11 operators using similar hand-held spray guns in greenhouse pepper crops . One of the coverall designs studied was made from a cotton/polyester material treated with a water-repellent Resist Spills® finish, which was compared in the field study to a coverall of similar design,

but using a woven, untreated cotton material. Under the field trial conditions evaluated, both the coverall designs gave better protection than the default values used in the most relevant predictive exposure model. Therefore, they could be considered as appropriate tools of personal protection when both comfort and field performance is taken into account under the specific application scenario.

Article of Interest FIVE SIMPLE WAYS TO PREVENT REPETITIVE MOTION INJURIES By Richard Hawk, CEO, www.MakeSafetyFun.com

You must move to work. Though you may know someone who regularly tries to disprove this fact, there is really no way to get around it. It's like flipping a coin; until you move your thumb or finger nothing happens, likewise with many jobs. The work will only gets done if someone repeats the same motion over and over again.

If you're a cashier, you must move your hand back and forth all day. It's the only way you can "ring up" all your customers' items. To make a living as a professional photographer, you must push a shutter button again and again and again. And if you cut tree limbs, you've got to continually squeeze the cutting tool to do your job.

The effect of this repeated action can lead to an injury (cumulative trauma). You can't do the work unless you make the moves, but if you make the moves you might get injured. What makes the problem even more complicated is that some people never show signs of any pain or weakness, even after several years on the job. While you on the other hand, feel a numbing sensation in your fingers six months after you join the company.

Remember, you must make the motion to do the work. So, what is a repetitive person to do?

1. Support Yourself: Why make your body do more work than it has to? Unless you are exer-cising, you want to perform the most work with the least amount of strain. See if you can safely support yourself-- especially your wrists and elbows. Talk to someone who can provide you with this support. Often a simple brace can reduce the strain to a much lower level.

2. Get Ready, Get Set, Before You Go: Would you run a race without any preparation? It's not a good idea. Before you start any repetitive motion, stretch. Prepare your body parts for action. Limber up--not just your arm or wrist but your whole body. It's good for you. Get ready and get set in the best position possible- BEFORE you decide to go.

3. Change Positions: Twisting, turning, yanking and extended reach are the main culprits be-hind many repetitive motion injuries. Sometimes a simple change in your position can eliminate most of the strain. Can you lower or raise your position so you don't have to reach so far? Don't wrestle with your work if you don't have to.

4. Break It Up: For five hours you're at the computer, then for two hours you do some other kind of work. Must you be at the keyboard for five hours in a row? Of course you take breaks, but could you, after three hours, do some other work for an hour, and then go back to the keyboard? Whatever repetitive move you make , the more you can "break it up" the better.

5. Straighten Up: Watch how people work and you'll find that almost everyone slouches when they sit and leans forward when they stand. It is oh, so much better for your body when you sit and stand straight. Work on it. Ask friends to remind you when they see you slouching at work. Besides helping you look better, straightening up may also relieve some of your repetitive motion strain.

A simple article to share with your employees!

Radiation Safety Officer Survival Handbook

By Joseph Vincelli, Norman W. Henry, III, John J. Miller, and James R. Weldy

The use of radiation in research, medicine, and industry is highly

regulated. Safety professionals working with radiation must pos-

sess not only a good understanding of science, but also of regula-

tory requirements. The RSO Survival Handbook provides an intro-

duction to radiation safety including basic radiation science, radia-

tion safety practices and procedures, and federal or state regula-

tions. References and examples of forms to be used for surveys,

audits, or for other specific investigations are included. The infor-

mation provided in this reference will benefit the RSO working in

an academic, research, or medical facility.
