Lesson 1: Getting Started in Microsoft Publisher 2010

Learning Goals: The goal of this lesson is to help students successfully explore and describe the Microsoft® Publisher 2010 window and create a flyer. The student will save the document and properly exit the program.

Learning Objectives: On completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

Successfully start Microsoft Publisher 2010 using a variety of methods. Explore the Publisher window and identify various features in the window. Navigate the Publisher window. Use the Ribbons and tabs in Publisher. Create a flyer. Insert text into a publication using various methods. Use fonts. Use graphics in a publication. Save a publication. Class Projects: Lesson 1—Exercise 1

As an office assistant, you are required to create announcements for the staff. You are asked to create a flyer announcing the upcoming Staff Appreciation Day. Using the Summer Barbeque flyer template, create an announcement flyer that includes the following information:

You are employed as the word processing specialist by Lincoln Distributors. Your business has decided to conduct a car wash to generate funds that will be donated to a local charity. Your committee decides to conduct the charity car wash on Saturday, August 6, 2011, from 10 A.M. until 3 P.M. The committee chairperson received permission to use the local municipal stadium’s parking lot as a central location to conduct the car wash.

Using the information provided above, create an appropriate flyer for the car wash using the Car Wash 2 flyer template. Change at least one font type, one font size, and one font color on the flyer. Remove unused text boxes and relocate or resize text boxes as needed. Use your imagination to create an interesting and attention-getting flyer.

Lesson 2: Creating Publications

Learning Goals: The goal of this lesson is to help students prepare for the task of creating various publications in Microsoft® Publisher 2010. The student will plan, design, and create various publications from multiple template types.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

Lesson 2—Exercise 1

As a new office assistant, you need to create several items for your personal use at the office. You determine that it would be helpful to have personalized business cards and stationery in your office. Choose any style of business card you would like to create using your personal information. Change the font type for the entire publication to Arial Rounded MT Bold.

Once the appropriate layout for the business card is set, group the name and title into one group and the address lines into another group (street, city, state, ZIP Code, and telephone number). Save the publication with the file name Lesson2_ex1a in the appropriate storage location. Close the publication.

Your next task is to create personalized stationery for your interoffice communication. Create a blank publication. Insert a heading (style = Pure) and align the heading toward the top of the publication. Enter your personal information into the heading area.

Change the color scheme of the publication to Module. Insert a border at the bottom of the publication to further accentuate the publication (Border Type = Argyle). Align and resize the border along the bottom portion of the stationery.

Recently, you were promoted to the new position of assistant publication specialist with Lincoln Distributors. You decide to send a postcard to the staff to announce your new position, location, and office number. The postcard will be distributed to the staff through the interoffice mail.

Create an announcement postcard using the Art Exhibit style. Complete the postcard with the following information:

Title: Assistant Publication Specialist

Announcement: I have moved to a new position! Please drop by my office anytime for assistance.

Change the postcard company image to any appropriate image for the announcement. Arrange the image to bring it forward so that it is not behind any other objects. Remove any unused text boxes and align all text boxes for clear readability. Change the font type to Baskerville Old Face for the entire publication and the publication color scheme to Urban. Insert the accent graphic element (Awning Stripe) at the bottom of the publication and resize to approximately one-quarter inch in height and the full width of the text area.

Lesson 3—Exercise 1

As a work study student in the college bookstore, you are asked to create a flyer for the upcoming textbook buyback. The flyer should be colorful and eye-catching, but it must also include a table of dates and times of the buyback. Use the information provided to assist in creating the flyer.

Lesson 4—Exercise 1

As a work study student in the college bookstore, you are asked to design a free bookmark to distribute to all students who purchase textbooks during the upcoming term. You want the bookmark to be colorful and eye-catching but also to include some study skills tips. Using the following suggestions from your co-workers, create a set of four bookmarks to present to the other bookstore staff for approval.

Lesson 6—Exercise 1

As a work-study student in the college marketing department, you are asked to design a newsletter to highlight the past year’s accomplishments of the campus student clubs. You will need to gather information from the club presidents and create a customized multipage newsletter containing all of the information that you gather. It may be helpful to include a brief description of the club’s purpose to aid new students in learning about available clubs. Choose any newsletter layout and alter the master page to match your desired design layout. Add a header and footer in the newsletter that includes the page number. Rename the master page as club_master_newsletter.

As assistant publication specialist with Lincoln Distributors, you are asked to serve on the holiday committee. Customize the newsletter template that you choose by adding in page parts or removing unwanted objects.
