SpotlightLora Connor

Lora Connor makes no bones about how important Vacation Bible School is to her

and her family: “We schedule our summer around this week. We make sure we’re here.”

The former Bank of America employee turned stay at home mom first “stumbled

upon” VBS even before her two girls were old enough to participate. Having grown up

Roman Catholic in Raleigh, NC, Connor had heard of VBS but didn’t know much about

it. All that changed after Lora and her oldest daughter Lila helped set up decorations for

camp one summer. That was seven years ago. Since then, the Connors haven’t missed

Vacation Bible School.

It’s not difficult to understand why. Connor

explains it this way: “VBS is a way to fulfill

our baptismal vow to guide and nurture the

children of our church. By helping the children grow in their faith, I also grow in my

faith. I get as much out of VBS as the children. I hear familiar Bible stories in a new way

through the eyes of children. “

Since that first summer, Connor has served everywhere and in-between. Once her

kids were old enough to participate she became a classroom “guide,” an adult leader in

charge of a group of children. Additionally, Connor co-chaired the VBS ministry team

for two years. Though being around her children is a big reason for her involvement, it’s

by no means a requirement: “Anyone can help. Anyone can volunteer. You don’t have to

have children attending…It’s great fellowship,” she says.

This year, Connor and about 200 other disciples will help over 250 campers travel

back in time to Hometown Nazareth, Where Jesus was a Kid. Among other activities,

children will visit Mary’s house to hear stories about Jesus, a marketplace featuring

archaeology, a food market, an apothecary and a bead shop.

“The church is huge, and it’s hard to find your spot, especially if you’re a new member

and you don’t have a lot of time. It’s just a great and easy way to get involved.”

This year’s Vacation Bible School starts tomorrow. Children’s Ministry thanks

everyone involved for helping to make it possible.

“I get as much out of VBS as the children.”

Loaves & Fishes is an emergency food pantry program that has served the working poor and the “wish they were working” poor for the past 40 years.

• Last summer, the organization provided a week’s supply of nutritionally balanced food to more than 19,000 people – 48% (more than 9,000) of them children.

• July is one of their busiest months of the year since it is the only calendar month that public school is not in session.

• When there is no school there is also no federally subsidized breakfast and lunch program available for many children of low income parents. That means parents must stretch their grocery dollars to provide 10 additional meals a week per child.

Want to help? Donate to today’s loose offering and support Loaves & Fishes during their busiest and financially neediest time of the year.

Freedom School Opportunities - A.G. Middle SchoolHelp provide summer educational enrichment for kindergarten-8th grade A.G. Middle School students this summer. A wide range of opportunities are available. Go to goo.gl/hXdPrq to see all needs. For more info, contact Rebekah at [email protected].
