March 2016

Dear Friends,I was driving back from Massachusetts this afternoon as the snow began to fall, earlier than had been predicted. I knew it was coming though, for as I drove, I could see the sky before me turning dark and gray. Closer to home, I stopped to drop off some books at a friend’s office and as I exited the building, a lady behind me peeked outside and grumbled, “ahhhh NEW ENGLAND … hmph!” Ahhhh yes, New England in February brings a good possiblity for S-N-O-W. If you’re tired of winter, however mild this year has been, hang in there. A month from now, we’ll be at the end of another winter season, spring right before us.

Our journey through the last days of the winter season parallels the path of Lenten season this month. As we look ahead to spring, we anticipate the Easter joy that awaits us at the end of the month as well. There is goodness to be appreciated in the winter months (more so for skiers, etc.!) and so is there grace – God’s grace – in the season of Lent. Find God’s grace in the practices of daily prayer, reading of Scripture, gathering in Christian fellowship and worship, service to others. We will continue to experience God’s grace as we share Holy Week services together, drawing nearer to the Cross.

May God’s blessings be with you and your family in these weeks as we journey through Lent and look ahead to the joy and beauty of Easter. It is only through taking time to focus on Lent that we are able to find the new life of Easter … let us all take that time now.

From Our FriendsAnd Members

Dear Pastor Laura and the Asbury Family,I greatly appreciated the loving tribute for Paul Alan Tibbitts. Thank you for honoring him in such a heartfelt manner.

With love,Jean Tibbitts

Dear Pastor Laura and the Asbury Membership, We wish to thank you, your staff and the congregation for the lovely memorial service and celebration of our sister, Susan Steele’s life. It was a true tribute to her character and the love she had for her family, friends, students and community. She spoke very fondly of the Asbury Church community, and I know she had many happy memories of the events held there. A very sincere thank you for the part you played in making her feel welcome! Blessings to you and your congregation.

In gratitude and friendship,Nancy Jordan, Judy Purney

Sisters of Sue

I would like to thank my Asbury family for their graciousness, love and kindness in being a part of my dear friend and fellow Girl Scout, Sue Steele's memorial service held at Asbury on January 12, 2016. Sue was loved and respected by many, and even though she was not a member of Asbury UMC, she devoted a lot of time and energy at our church helping during events, fundraisers and scouts. When the call went out that I needed help with food, ushers, kitchen assistance and guidance, Asbury's members came out in droves and without question stepped in and made this very difficult time for the family that much easier.   With the amount of attendees that paid their respects, we would have been overwhelmed if it hadn't been for the love and caring showed by all of you.  Words cannot express my gratitude and love that I have for you all.

Respectively,Geri Beveridge

Easter Egg HuntSponsored by the Education Committee

The 4th Annual Women’s retreat will take place on April 23rd from 9 am to 3 pm.

This event is sponsored by WIF and will take place at Asbury. We have done several different types of retreats in the past and by far the favorite one was the first, so by popular demand we will follow that format with a new theme, “Surrender”.

This will be a fun spirited day that will include breakfast and lunch, fellowship, inspiration, music and an all around good time.

Asbury UMC will be holding a clothing drive collection from now through June 1, 2016. The following items will be collected: Men’s, Women’s & Children’s wearable & usable clothing, Shoes, Belts, Handbags, Linens (Bedding, Curtains, Towels, etc…), Stuffed Animals, Hard Toys.

We will receive money for every pound we collect. So go through your closets, basements, your friend’s closets and basements and bring them down to Asbury. Please be sure to put all items in a tied plastic bag.

You may bring your items to Asbury anytime during the week between 9a-12p, and on Sundays before and after services, and leave them in Wesley Hall.

If you need someone to pick up the donations, please contact the church office at 860-584-0529 and arrangements will be made.

Remember we are paid on a per pound basis, so why not share the information with others. If you have any questions, please contact Geri Beveridge.

Opening DayNorm Fusaro

I’m going to give you two important dates, September 9, 1993 and April 4 2016.April 4, 2016 is opening day for Major League Baseball. On opening day hundreds of thousands of fans will put on their team apparel and fill the ballparks all around the country. Going to the ballpark on opening day is magical. The spring air is warmed by the sun. The signature sound of the Wurlitzer organ is piped throughout the stadium and mixed with the voices of announcers making pregame predictions. The tempting aroma of popcorn and fried food fills the air. Vendors are hawking their products. Pea-NUTS! HOT Dogs! Ice cold Coke-a-co-la! Then, you make your way down the concourse and come up the ramp and out of the tunnel and right before your eyes is that hallowed ground, the ball field. You stop for a moment to take it all in. The manicured green grass that has been mowed in alternating directions creating a pattern that looks as if each blade of grass was tucked by a master carpet maker. And right in front, beginning at home plate is a geometrically perfect diamond, ninety feet on a side delineated by bright white chalk lines on perfectly raked brown infield dirt. If you are there early enough the grounds crew is spraying a mist of water on the infield to set it all in place. It’s absolutely breath taking.

Opening day is special because it represents a new beginning. All the events of the past are in the record books and everyone has a clean slate. Sins have been forgiven. Opening day is a fresh start. Winter is behind us and everything is going to be alright.

Baseball is a great metaphor about life. A team is many parts that make one body and while everyone on the team is wearing the same jersey each individual has a story.

One time I was watching a game between the Los Angeles Angels, or more correctly the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the LA Dodgers. Mike Trout was at bat for the Angels. The count was two balls and two strikes when Trout just unleashed on a fastball down the middle of the plate and sent the ball over the left center field wall. As Trout rounded the bases the camera focused on his parents who were sitting in the stands proudly applauding his accomplishment. Mike’s parents travel frequently from their home in Vineland, NJ to watch their son play ball.

Leading off the next inning for the Dodgers was Yasiel Puig. This was Puig’s second year in the big leagues and he played with all the enthusiasm of a kid. On the first pitch Puig did what he does best. He swung hard and sent the ball deep into the upper deck. A no doubt about it homerun into the upper deck. The camera followed Yasiel as he rounded the bases and fist bumped his third base coach on the way home. There was no camera shot of his family in the stands as there was for Mike Trout because Yasiel’s mother cannot travel to watch her son play ball. If she wants to listen to American baseball games on her portable radio she has to ascend to a second story roof top in order to get good radio reception in her home town of Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Here are two guys living the dream. Grown men playing a kids game and getting paid very well to do it but they each took an entirely different road to the ballpark.

Trout and Puig came from completely different backgrounds but they worked hard until one day they were called up to the big leagues. It’s much like that when God calls us from wherever we may be or whatever we may be doing.

Another example of baseball’s metaphoric relation to life is the clock or lack of a clock. There is no time clock in baseball. To quote the great Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

One time we drove from Philly to Baltimore to see the Phillies play the Orioles at Camden Yards. Camden Yards is one of the first of the newer ballparks built to look like the older parks. It’s situated in downtown Baltimore and has a brick and steel architecture reminiscent of the industrial buildings constructed in the early 1900s. Having bought the tickets online we were seated with a bunch of other loyal Phillies fans who traveled to Baltimore, all wearing our team paraphernalia and cheering for the Fightin’ Phils.

It was a sunny, picture perfect baseball kind of day. The Phillies and Orioles were playing good ball and we were well stuffed with barbecue beef from Boog’s BBQ, named for legendary Oriole’s first baseman Boog Powell. The day was spectacular but the Phils were down by four runs going into the eighth inning. Many Orioles fans cut out early believing this win was in the bag and they could beat the traffic home. Quite a number of Phillies fans in our section had left too. They had given up hope. What’s the use of staying, they thought, they’ll never win and we have several hours to drive home. But for those of us with faith we stayed and saw a great comeback win that was capped off by Travis Lee crushing a go ahead two run home run in the ninth inning. The Orioles fans were dejected but the Phillies fans were going wild. I recall saying to a couple of folks in our section who were out of their seats about to leave when Lee uncorked that homer, “And you were going home!” They would have missed it. They would have driven all the way to Baltimore, spent all that money and time and would have left before it was over.

But that’s how a comeback happens. A comeback is series of small events that, when strung together result in overcoming what appeared to be an unsurmountable challenge. In baseball it is a base hit, a stolen base, or a sacrifice bunt that set up scoring opportunities. Remember, a grand slam can only occur after three other players reach base. Don’t quit until the miracle happens.

I mentioned another date, September 9, 1993. That was the day when I began my comeback. God picked me up and training camp began. I knew I couldn’t continue to live my old life but I was stubborn and still held on to some old ideas and beliefs. Somehow I thought I was still in control but looking back I can see how God guided my path and put people and events in place that lead me to where he wanted me. Step by step I was lead to Asbury and to Jesus. For years I would attend meetings in Wesley hall and not pay any attention to the rest of this building. Then I started to feel a gentle push to go upstairs. The more I dismissed it the stronger the call became. Then one day I gave in and decided to attend Sunday service. I didn’t tell anyone I was going. On Sunday I got up, got dressed and drove to church. I even took the long way here. I walked up the stairs into the narthex then through the doors into the sanctuary and just like opening day at the ballpark I was overwhelmed with emotion. There was no popcorn and Roy wasn’t hawking programs but my burden had been lifted. I knew I was home. Winter is behind us and everything is going to be alright.

That Sunday happened to be communion Sunday. Pastor Laura invited all, and we mean all, to join at the table. Even me, I thought? I went to receive communion and I recall sniffing the little cup to make sure there was no alcohol in the cup. After kneeling at the altar and praying a moment I returned to my seat. I returned to that same seat the next Sunday and the Sunday after that and so on. That seat right there became my seat. It was like I had season tickets. But it wasn’t long before God moved me from the stands to the playing field and the game has gotten so much better.

There is no time clock in life. God does not play on our schedule so don’t quit until the miracle happens.

Look at this hour glass. The first thing I want you to notice is the sand never goes up. Life always moves forward. The bulb on the bottom is the past. If I live in the past I will be buried by the sands of time. I cannot change what happened yesterday so I don’t dwell on the past. The neck is the present. If you look closely at the neck you will notice it is always changing. Life is always changing. I am always changing. The sand up here (top) is not my sand. This is God’s sand and by His grace he freely gives me this sand one day at a time.

Amen.

If God didn’t withhold from us his very own Son, will God withhold anything we need? If trust must be earned, hasn’t God unequivocally earned our trust with the bark on the raw wounds, the thorns pressed into the brow, your name on the cracked lips? How will he not also graciously give us all things he deems best and right? He’s already given the incomprehensible.
