I like to take a moment and thank Eric Salminen, our Rallye Master and his band of volunteersfor making the 27th running of the “Get the Dust-Off” Rallye another fantastic event. Despitethe rainy weather we had a good turnout and I would venture to say everybody had fun. Ericthru his hard work was able to get door prize items donated and the event saw a small profit.

- Age is different for everybody, I guess, but I'mgetting too old for this project car, and will never finish it .... I have two MGA's ... a 1960roadster, which is a driver (about a $ 25K car), and the '62 MK2. I don't need both cars ...my wife can't or won't drive a 4-speed, and my sons don't really have any interest in old cars,or British cars. Better to pass this thing to someone who has an interest in them and can ap-preciate it for what it is. I can send a CD with pix and detailed info on the '62 ... it should be worth 35 to 40Kwhen completed. It is SN GHNL2/108410, shipped on 13 April 1962. Originally red withred interior and tan hood, I planned to re-do it in black with a red and black interior. Theengine and interior of the the main clip has been sprayed in black, and the doors, trunk lid,and hood have all been done in black by a pro. The rest of the clip is in primer. It was at apro body shop for over a year, finally brought back home because the body guy was puttingmy money up his nose, not in the car. The carbs have been rebuilt (by Joe Curto) and are on the engine, finger-tight. Ceram-ic coated exhaust manifold, also loosely attached; Moss alternator; Pertronix ignition ... en-tire engine is now on an engine stand, stored inside a trailer with other large parts ...fenders, etc. My plan is to sell the trailer along with the contents ... this is a 12 foot twowheel utility trailer with a ramp door. I don't want to give this car away, but there it would be a real sweet deal for someonemechanically inclined, and 50-ish instead of 70-ish like I am. Let me know if your are inter-ested, and you send the CD with all the particulars - contact [email protected]

This year’s 27th Annual "Getthe Dust-Off "Rallye was an un-qualified success. We had 29cars running this year with 36registered. We had a good num-ber of donors and volunteersto help make the event a funtime. This was a great turnoutconsidering a lot of SCCA re-gional and national rallies havebeen happy to pull in 12-15 cars.

While Mother Nature was notvery cooperative our participa-tion was excellent and with ev-eryone clustered indoors at both thestart and finish, camaraderie was veryhigh. In the meantime Dennis Bevinswas busy inputing the data from thecheckpoints to tally up the winnersand Eric and Chris were setting upthe special label wine that would begiven out awards.

Everyone seemed to have a good timeat Dejon Winery, enjoying the winetasting, the door prizes and finallyreceiving their awards.  Despite thewet weather, and everyone havingto stay indoors at the winery it

actually brought everyone closertogether for the day's experi-ence.

One surprise is that we had veryfew of our marque club people(even in daily drivers ratherthan their classic cars) so some-

how the event reached out to aLOT of new folks - not SCCAmembers either.  With thissaid, planning is all ready un-der way for the 28th Annual"Get the Dust-Off" Rallye onthe first Sunday in May(5/7/17).

We published our initial LBC restorationarticle about a 1973 MGB GT V8 a fewmonths ago. In that article we discussed anddescribed one side of the restoration equation, the car, but did not spend much time on theother side, the people. I believe this is the moreimportant part of the equation. The Dinner-man’s have a passionate history with MG’s. David’s MG mania began while he at-tended a semester at the London School ofEconomics in 1974, David took his first ride inthe then new MGB GT V8. David and a friendlooked at a blue V8 MGB with teal interior, they rode it around for hours in the middle ofthe night and David fell head over heels for thelittle V8 MGB GT. He returned to the USmarried Ilana, served his country in the Armybut never lost his passion for MGs.

In the early 1980s, David began collect-ing MGs including; a 1957 MGA, a 1962 B, a1973 BGT, an orange 1971 Midget, and final-ly the car Matt is going to restore a 1973 MGBGT V8. David also joined every MG car clubhe could find whether in the US or in the Brit-ish Isles.

David felt the available literature onMGs was severely lacking and began planningto author his own book on this LBC. Can youimagine trying to author a book on an originalAtom or a Commodore 64 computer? Davidwanted to give enthusiasts a complete andcomprehensive reference for their MGs. Hespent a lot of his time gathering data for hisbook by working with other enthusiasts to re-pair their cars, as well as helping other MGowners that reluctantly gave up on their LBCs.

David’s memory of that midnight ridein the V8 MG weighed heavily in his dreamsand he finally decided that he should find a V8

MGB and bring it to the US. This decisionreally begins the saga that David and Matt nowshare because this is when Matt’s 1973 MGB

GT V8 was brought into the picture.

David, now resolved to get a V8 MGB GT andwent to England to find one. Once in Englandhe met with Murray Scott Nelson restorationgarage about 2 available V8 MGBs. The ga-rage had two available, one in Teal and one inAconite, David easily chose the Teal one. After negotiating with the shop for thenecessary alterations to make his new V8MG meet American safety standards(such as upgrading the brake system andreplacing doors), David spent some timelooking around England at other V8MGB GTs and ended up at the MG fac-tory in Abingdon. David could not resiststopping by the Magic Midget, a pub inAbingdon, to share a pint of ale with MG

factory workers. Once there he noticed it wasclosed. So he walked down the street and no-ticed a gentleman cleaning his 1979 MGB GT.He struck up a conversation with the ownerand they became instant friends. That wasTrevor Jones, who installed the interior in theV8 David was purchasing. Eventually, Trevorbecame an honorary uncle to David’s threesons, Etan, Trevor and Matt. Clive, one of the

shop owners, organized publicity of thefirst V8 to display his shops work. Ilanaand David stayed with Trevor and Jackiefor a few days with the plan to have Clivefix the overheating. David and Trevorshowed their cars at the Brand's HatchRaceway show. Then drove the car toHeathrow airport and left it with Trevorfor shipment.  David and Ilana returnedto the US to pick up the car. David was well on his way to having thefirst MGB GT V8 imported in the UnitedStates. But now is when it gets interest-

ing,Along with the safety modifications Mur-

ray Scott Nelson garage was tasked to fix theoverheating before it was shipped to the US.They didn't fix it in time, but Trevor wentahead and sent it on the ship from Liverpool toDundalk, MD.

The timing of the MGs importation wascritical because Sen. Warner of VA's officecalled to say that the grey market loophole wasclosing due to changing legislation in Califor-nia.

It was imported in David’s mother’sname because under the grey mar-ket law, a person could import 1 carin a lifetime that did not meetEPA standards. They were afraidthat if they had to deport the car(for whatever reason; failing to meetstandards), they would try tobring it in again under dad's name.Customs ultimately changed the lawto then require people to put down adeposit (100% the value of the car)to allow it into the country with therequirement that it be up to Ameri-can safety standards within 60-90days.

The fun of having a righthand drive car in America beganearly. David drove home fromDundalk to Woodbridge, VA withhis nephew Tony, who was 7 or 8

years old at the time, in the passengerseat. David gave Tony a 57 MGA steer-ing wheel and Tony would play the steer-ing wheel game, pretending to drive onthe American driver’s side of the car, tosurprise people on highway 95. Theywould repeat this game as they drove thecar around to different shows. David received an invite to thelaunch of the MG F at Dulles airportwhere he was asked to juxtapose his carnext to the new MG F in 1986. Davidundertook to dress up the MGB for thisevent so he had it painted, but wasn't re-

turned until 3 days before the show. David

worked on it for 2 days straight, but couldn'tcomplete it in time for the show. He wasvery disappointed in missing this event.

Life has a way of changing our priori-ties. It was no different in the Dinnermanfamily; children, work, continuing service tocountry, all good things changed the focusand priorities and the MG was pushed fur-ther and further into the background.

We arrive to the present day, Mattshares his father’s interest in cars and specif-ically to MGs. Matt saw the forgotten MG

and decided it was time to bring this 1973MGB GT V8 back to its original glory. We are privileged to be able to share inMatt’s journey as he undertakes this project. We wish him the best as he works through allthe challenges he faces. I am also sure we, as a

club, offer any assistancewe can provide to makehis project a success. Imean really, to have thefirst imported MGB GTV8 in our club, that’sgood stuff. There will bemore articles on the Din-nerman Project, in thenext chapter Matt willdescribe his restorationplan. Then we will havesubsequent articles asMatt progresses throughthis family restorationproject.

Grill the steaks until an internal tempera-ture on an instant-read thermometer reads about130 degrees F, 3 to 4 minutes per side, brushingwith the boiled marinade several times in the lastfew minutes of grilling time. (If you are cookingthe filet mignon steaks, you will need to increasethis time to 8 to 10 minutes per side to accountfor the thicker cut). Transfer to a large plate torest for 5 to 10 minutes. While the steaks grill, add the potatoes to the grill and grill until well-marked and crispy, turning to grill all sides, about5 minutes total. Transfer the potato wedges to abowl. MG launched itsfirst-ever SUV at theLondon MotorShow. The GS wasdesigned and engi-neered at the brand'sLongbridge factory inBirmingham, UK,and will join the rap-idly swelling crowdof high-riding hatch-backs designed withthe city in mind.

Just like Mazda andNissan, MG has triedto draw buyers inwith a sporty, ruggedlooking exterior.Whereas most con-cept cars have theirstyling toned rightdown when it comestime to reach pro-duction, the GSlooks remarkablysimilar to the CSConcept MG showedin 2013.

Yes, the production car'swheels are a bit smaller, butthe rest of the package istrue to what we were prom-ised three years ago. To oureyes, that makes for a prettyhandsome package, althoughthere's not much going on atthe front to set it apart fromthe cheap-and-cheerful MG3launched at the same time asthe CS Concept.

Before we go any further, it's worth askingwhat MG actually is these days. Founded in1924, Morris Garages was known for creating

quintessentially British road-sters, many of which havefound favor with modern carenthusiasts keen to get theirhands dirty with home resto-ration projects.

Having fallen upon hardtimes during the tumultuousreign of British Leyland, thestoried marque is nowowned by SAIC, which isresponsible for cars like the

SAIC Maxus MPV G10 and Roewe G10. SA-IC is aiming to use the MG brand to lead itsglobal charge, and cars like the MG6, MG3

1933 M.G. L2 Magna 2-Seater Sports

The MG F-type Magna is a six-cylinder-engined car that was produced by MG from Octo-ber 1931 to 1932. It was also known as the 12/70. Looking for a car to fill the gap between the M-Type Midget and the 18/80, MG turned toanother of the engines that had become available from William Morris's acquisition of Wolseley. This was the 1271 cc 6-cylinder version of the overhead camshaft engine used in the 1929 MG Mtype Midget and previously seen in the 1930 Wolseley Hornet and had dummy side covers to dis-guise its origins.

With its sloping radiator and long bonnet the F-Type is an attractive car capable of reach-ing 70 mph (110 km/h). 188 of the cars were supplied in chassis form to outside coachbuilderssuch as Abbey, Jarvis, Stiles and Windover.
