We have already filled three (3) classes and expect to fill the fourth (4 th ) by the end of this term. Prep Date Claimer 22 nd October On Monday 22 nd October we are having an open morning for our 2013 Prep children. Please make a note in your diary and let all your friends know with Prep aged children. Arts Showcase The performing and visual arts play a huge role in society. I look forward to seeing you there on the night. 2012 Children’s Book of the Year Awards The winners of the Children’s Book Council of Australia 2012 Book of the Year Awards have been announced. The Book of the Year Award for Older Readers went to Scot Gardner for his book The Dead I Know while Cate Constable took out the Book of the Year: Younger Readers Award for Crow Country. Nick Bland was awarded the Early Childhood Award for his The Runaway Hug and the Picture Book of the Year Award went to Bob Graham, for A Bus called Heaven. Full details on the winners and runners up in each of the award categories can be found at www.cbca.org.au/winners_2012.htm Smoking in School Grounds I wish to remind all parents that smoking is not permitted on school premises. Should you be a smoker please move away from the school gates. Two Minute Zone (from Queensland Transport) Parking around schools is limited and drivers have been parking in the Two Minute zones, the No Stopping/Standing/Parking zones and bus stops. These actions are not only illegal, but are also dangerous for children travelling to and from school. Police and councils have advised they will visit schools periodically during the year to issue traffic offence notices to offending drivers. The success of the Two Minute zone requires cooperation from all parents to ensure the quick movement of vehicles around the school. Please observe the strict time frames for these areas and only stay in the area for as long as it takes to get the children into or out of the car. Drivers must not park the car in these signed areas and then go into the school with their children, or to collect them. It has been reported that in some instances parents stop their car and stay in it waiting for somebody to take their children to class and then come back. PLEASE NOTE! This area is designed to keep the vehicles moving and it should not be used in this manner. Tools for School As the year progresses children make use of the ruler, pencils, scissors, erasers, books, glue etc. which you purchased at the beginning of the year. Please take the time to check your child’s pencil case and replace the items which have been used. MUSIC NEWS

Music Notes

SingFest Last Monday saw 53 of our Senior Choir students participate in the annual EQ SingFest event. The students worked really hard during the day, learning and rehearsing new and old songs, and then finally put on a wonderful concert for parents in the evening. Here’s what some of our choir students thought… “Singfest was great. Everyone was happy to be there. The songs that the conductor taught us were fun and joyful and the harmonies and melodies fitted together really well. It was amazing!” “Singfest is always awesome! We sing cool songs and meet people from different schools. I wish I could do Singfest forever!” “I just love spending the whole day singing. It’s really cool to sing with a big group, it makes you feel really good!” “Singfest was so awesome. My favourite song was all of them!” “Singfest was a brilliant performance. I loved it, especially Ancient City!” Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us on the night, and especially to Rachel Gambarini for her help throughout the day. Upcoming dates. 19 Sept, 2012 Band workshop – Springfield Central State High School Early Term 4 All group Musical evening – school hall.

Central District Touch Football Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Central District touch football competition. The event was held over four Gala Days and the behaviour of the students was exceptional. The Junior Girls’ team defeated Collingwood Park SS to gain their spot in the Grand Final. FROM THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE

STUDENT ABSENCE LINE

Parents are requested to call the Student Absence Line on 3437 9860 to advise the school if your child/ren will be absent.

STUDENT PERSONAL DETAILS We are reminding parents to ensure that all contact details are up to date. We have had a number of incidents of late where we have needed to contact parents due to accident or illness and the phone numbers that we have on file are incorrect or have been disconnected.

MESSAGES TO STUDENTS We are receiving an increasing number of messages to pass on to students in relation to end

of day arrangements/pickup. It becomes extremely difficult to pass these messages on to students when we receive calls from parents minutes before the bell. We ask families to please make arrangements before leaving in the morning.

MOBILE PHONES Bringing mobile phones to school is not encouraged by the school because of the potential for theft and general distraction and/or disruption associated with them. However, we understand that on occasions parents require their children to have a mobile phone. This is to be logged into the office on arrival at school, with the mobile phone register being signed. Children collect their phones and sign them out in the afternoon.

PEANUT AND OTHER NUT ALLERGIES Parents are requested not to provide lunches or snacks containing nut products for children attending Springfield Lakes State School. This is to protect the significant number of students who have anaphylactic allergies to even traces of peanuts and other nuts. Some of these students are

so allergic that even a minute amount of peanut butter or Nutella could cause an anaphylactic reaction. Please do not send Nutella, peanut butter sandwiches or other snack products to school

that could put other students at risk. Thank you for helping us keep all of our students safe.

When packing lunches for our children please keep i n mind convenience is not always the best solution. The small cans of spaghetti or fruit with the pull ring lids are a very convenient solution for a meal but have also caused nasty accidents for little fingers. Please be mindful of this and perhaps take the time to open and pour the contents into a small plastic container.

While Mr Doyle likes dogs not all dogs like each other. Please do not bring your dog to school as some dogs bite and some dogs like to fight.

CHAPPY’S CHAT The past fortnight has been a rather busy one for the school’s chaplaincy service. Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Ipswich Cares dinner. It was a lovely night and it was great to hear about how the City of Ipswich is working towards not only caring for the people of Ipswich but also leading the way in caring for other communities around the world. Chaplaincy Days in 2012 are Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays. If you have any questions about the Chaplaincy Service and the support we are able to provide to you or your children, or you’d just appreciate a yarn, please feel free to contact me via the school office or email [email protected] .

I Care... We Care... Ipswich Cares

Springfield Lakes State School supports ‘Ipswich Cares’, an initiative with Compassion Australia that challenges the City of Ipswich to give to help an overseas need. During September, residents of Ipswich are asked to donate a dollar at money spinners located at Orion Springfield Town Centre and Booval Fair. All money raised will be used to support Compassion’s Water for Life program. The Water for Life program enables Ipswich to become part of the solution to one of the greatest and most urgent needs in developing countries today, access to clean, safe and drinkable water. Your help will see children in remote areas around the world receive a simple cost-effective water purification system that will provide them and their families with clean, safe water for a lifetime.

Partnering with Purpose:-

Making Time for kids Exciting New Program at Springfield Lakes State School

Partnering with Purpose - Making Time for Kids is starting soon at Springfield Lakes State School. This program will be available to those children who are finding the school environment challenging for various reasons. We are asking for volunteers who can give a child an hour of their time to take a special interest in them, in order to help them to feel more valued and supported, and to encourage them to be more active participants in the classroom situation. A caring adult who gives a child one hour a week of their undivided attention can make a real difference in that child’s life. The mentor and child would spend time together doing something agreed to by both e.g. reading, playing a game, helping with an assignment, art and craft or supervised computer work such as Mathletics. The mentor would build a positive relationship with the child, to help improve their self esteem, confidence and overall resilience. How Can You Help? Maybe you or someone you know would be suitable for such a worthwhile program. Free Triple P Group Course We would like to invite you to our free Triple P Group Course, these are more in depth than our evening seminars and covers a wide range of parenting solutions, it also includes follow up phone calls to help you in your progress in implementing the principles of the program. Group Programmes What will I learn in a Group Triple P Course? You’ll learn about:

-Effective parenting strategies. -How to promote your child’s development. -How to manage common child behaviour problems. -Principles to help you deal with almost any situation that might arise.

How much time will it take and how many people are in a group? The great thing about doing a Triple P Group Course is that the groups are small (typically 10 – 12 people) and you’ll feel immediately at home with a group of parents who all want the same thing – to do the best for their kids and have an enjoyable family life! Groups are run by an accredited Triple P practitioner. These will be run over one day with follow up phone conversations addressing your individual progress. Our group programs start in Ipswich on the 18 th of August

Consistency is the key for me. Thank you." "It has helped me to see that not all the problems were my son’s behaviour, but how I dealt with them. The biggest changes came in my own behaviour." "I want to thank you for giving me other ways to deal with problem behaviour instead of yelling and getting no-where. I am definitely feeling more confident." "Excellent. Every parent should do this course. Many thanks." "Gave me a lot more confidence as a parent. Good strategies for managing bad behaviour that work. Good ideas for parenting e.g. importance of positive actions (praise) and that they really make a big difference. It would be great if this programme was made more known to parents. It would have been of great benefit to use before my son reached the terrible 2s. We probably wouldn’t have fallen into some of the traps (e.g. giving in, smacking, etc.) that we initially did before seeking help. I’m sure we will have better parenting skills with our daughter than we initially did as first time parents. Great Programme – thanks, you saved us!!" "Excellent.
