Dear Children, Staff and Families,

This week we celebrate Mission Week during which we inform our students about the people in the world who are in need. We also support these groups in a tangible way:

• We send money to support Loreto Vietnam in their work with children;

• We support our local St Vincent de Paul Society who reach out to people in our local community who are experiencing tough times;

• We assist Catherine House in the city and their work in offering refuge to women and children who need to leave their homes for their own safety.

I am thrilled with the care that our students show for the needs of others.

SCHOOL FEES

I thank all families for the support they give to the school in paying their school fees and other charges such as OSHC in a timely fashion. I do understand though that from time to time families experience financial hardship. If you find yourself unable to meet your commitment to school fees please contact me at the school to discuss your needs.

NAPLAN

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 children for their successful completion of NAPLAN testing. Together with many schools across the country we were presented with some technical challenges on Day 1 of testing however these were not widespread and were resolved promptly by our NAPLAN team.

Due to the minimal disruption experienced we have chosen not to put students through repeat tests where external glitches caused short term interruption. We do not anticipate significant impact to student data and will address any data anomalies on an individual basis.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

Thank you for your support of our School Uniform. I appreciate greatly the work of Jo Miller and Maria Pit in ensuring that uniforms are available in good supply and that prices are kept to a minimum. I also appreciate the support of families in sending their children to school in the correct uniform. There are some aspects of the uniform which I ask that you give attention:

• School ties are part of the school uniform;• School Sun-safe hats should be worn. Baseball

peaked caps are not part of the uniform and should not be worn. Hats should not be worn in class.

TRIVIA NIGHT

This year we are blessed to have a rejuvenated Parents and Friends Association which is making a big impact on the quality of life in our school. Fathers Day and Mother’s Day Stalls, Coffee Club before Assemblies and Play Group sessions and so the list goes on…

The P&F is a confluence of parents, staff and friends of the school working together for the benefit of the school and the broader community.

Their latest enterprise is to host a Trivia Night on Friday June 21st at 7.30pm in the Hall. The Committee has amassed an amazing amount of wonderful prizes for the night. Support your P&F Committee and don’t miss out on all the fun! It will be great to see you in an informal, adults only evening. See you then!!!

FROM THE APRIMThe Feast of the Ascension This Sunday, June 2nd is the Feast of the Ascension. It has always been part of a joyful celebration of the fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost but was s ingled out for commemoration on the fortieth day toward the end of the 4th Century. The feast develops the glory of the resurrection by acclaiming the exaltation of Christ as Lord of heaven and earth. It serves to prepare the Church, toward the end of Easter, for the coming of the of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

OUR GOD FULL OF SURPRISES

In life, we often desire the certainty of things so that we know what to do and act accordingly. It is the fear of what the future may bring that we are concerned about because we cannot control what happens. If we can, we would like to continue with what we know now and attempt to put in place plans and contingencies so that when the future does become the now, we hope that we are able to do so. Change is often what we are afraid of. However, we can never really see the future – we can forecast somewhat, based on past experiences and accumulated knowledge – but we can never be 100% sure that, that is what is to happen. Only God knows for sure. So when things unexpected happen, our reaction is often based on the in-built survival instinctive response of ‘fight or flight’, because we feel threatened by the uncertainty occurring. We can become aggressive, to change back the situation to our comfort, or we can draw back and say ‘not my problem’. But there are also other ways to respond that can be learned or acquired so as to mitigate the effect of that instinctive response; such as the often said: “Count 1 to 10 first and take a deep breath before you act.” Because God has gifted us with adaptability and resilience, we can respond to the situation at hand in other ways and more positively at that. But, it is not always an unpleasant surprise – there are pleasant surprises as well – and we should enjoy these and be thankful for them. They bring about a nice feeling and even a smile at times. We feel blessed. God blesses us with his continued presence in our lives. He does not promise that all will be smooth sailing through life but he does assure us that he will always be with us, even to the end of time. And so we pray: “God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things that I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference.” Deacon Arturo Jimenea

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

LaptopsThe laptops are a great tool for the students. Here are a few tips for looking after them:

• No food or drink near the laptop;• Store in a safe and dry area;• Use in a dry area (ie not near sinks or wash areas);• Do not run or walk with the laptop in the open position;• Do not run with the laptop;• Always ensure the protective cover is on and not

tampered with.

School routines:• SCHOOL START - School starts at 8.50am, children must be under supervision of adults at all

times. Yard Duty begins at 8.30am, if they arrive earlier they need to attend OSHC;• LATE ARRIVALS - If your child is later than 8.50am they must sign in at Student Reception;

• SCHOOL FINISH - School finishes at 3pm if you cannot collect your child by 3.10pm, they need to go to OSHC;

• PICK UP/DROP OFF SAFETY - Please use the Kiss and Drop Zone and DO NOT drop off your children in the car parks or park in Disabled Zones … it is illegal;

• SAFETY - Please don’t walk on the driveways, use the footpaths, don’t walk in or out of the vehicle entry/exit gates;

• LABELLING - please label all removable clothing (ie. jumpers, jackets, hats), label school bags, drink bottles, lunch boxes and anything else your child may bring;

• PERSONAL ITEMS - No toys, electronics or sports equipment to be brought to school (laptops available for lease Years R-1 and provided for Years 2-6, sports equipment available from class

teacher);• NUT FREE - A reminder we are a nut free school. This includes but is not limited to Nutella,

Peanut Butter and some muesli bars.• STAFF CAR PARK - The inside carpark is for STAFF only.

• GATES - All gates are locked everyday at 9.15am and re-opened at 2.15pm. During these times you must come through the front office and sign in.
