The ANC in Limpopo officially nominated Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe to replace President Jacob Zuma as party leader at the party’s national elective conference in Mangaung this coming Sunday.

The announcement of Motlanthe’s nomination was made last Thursday, after the first nomination conference had to be postponed when violence erupted between Zuma supporters and those who support Motlanthe.

The electoral commission announced that Motlanthe won the nomination process by 268 votes to seven. ANC treasurer-general Mathews Phosa was nominated for the position of deputy president, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula for secretary-general, Thandi Modise for national chairwoman, Thenjiwe Mtintso for deputy secretary and Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale for treasurer.

The second nomination process where however just as volatile, as delegates could not agree on credentials requirements during the registration process.

Delegates from the Waterberg region were especially unhappy with the process. Regional Secretary Andries Lekalakala told Northern News last Thursday that 65 of the Waterberg delegates where illegally removed from the premises. “At the registration process some of our delegates’

LEPHALALE - The Lephalale Municipality is taking strong action against businesses that operate illegally in residential areas in Onverwacht.

According to ward councillor, Steph Snyders, several notices were given this week to ‘back-yard mechanics’ who fill their premises and sidewalks with broken down motor vehicles.

“The problem is that they operate without a business licenses and quickly turn once peaceful and quiet neighbourhoods into noisy busy streets,” he told Northern News on Monday.

According to Snyders the notices demand that illegal businesses are shut down immediately. “I spoke to the municipal manager, Bob Naidoo on Monday who assured me that the municipality will visit the premises with the traffic police and if business owners refuse to comply with the notices, a court interdict will be sought to force the owners to close down their businesses.”

Wanted for fraudPolice are looking for this woman who allegedly defrauded a mother from Mokopane by telling her that she works for the Department of Health and would assist the mother in registering her daughters for a nursing course at Mankweng hospital.

The woman told the mother that registration cost amounts to R7 000 per student, so the mother made a R20 000 personal loan and handed the woman R21 000 for entering her three daughters. The children accompanied the woman to Polokwane as she recommended they stay over at her house as the cues for registration were very long. On their arrival at Polokwane the suspect disappeared with the money and left the young girls alone.

‘n Verdagte wat op 11 November gearresteer is op aanklag van diefstal van sonpanele ter waarde van R40 000, se saak is deur die staatsaanklaer uit die hof gegooi weens ‘n gebrek aan bewyse. Dit ten spyte van die feit dat die persoon se voetspore hom op die toneel plaas en die feit dat hy bereid was om drie medepligtiges uit te wys.

Die arrestasie is gemaak toe spoorsnyers van die gemeenskap op die gesteelde sonpanele afgekom het en twee van Molalaltau Sekuriteit se spoorsnyers die verdagte se spoor van daar gevolg het tot by sy plaaswerkershuis daar naby. Die verdagte was volgens Molalaltau Sekuriteit bereid om die name van drie ander verdagtes bekend te maak. Vingerafdrukke wat deur die polisie se forensiese afdeling van die sonpanele gelig is kon ook gebruik word om al vier skuldig te bevind al dan nie.

Dit het egter die week aan die lig gekom dat die verdagte vrygelaat is en dat die drie uitgewysde verdagtes nooit gearresteer is nie.

Aldo Venter van EZT Communications wat die saak by die polisiestasie geopen het sê hy het ‘n sms ontvang op 14 November om te sê dat die ondersoek bepampte Sersant RP Selokela is (saaknommer CHS216/11/2012). Venter het Selokela die volgende dag gebel en gevra of die persoon nog in hegtenis is of nie, hy het ook vir hom die inligting deurgegee van die ander drie verdagtes. Selokela het hom meegedeel dat die persoon nog nie in die hof verskyn het nie en dat hy hom op hoogte sal hou van die saak. Geen verdere terugvoer is ontvang nie. Venter het Selokela weer op 23 November geskakel en is meegedeel

Kommer oor vrot polisiewerkdat die verdagte vrygelaat is sonder dat enige rede verskaf is. Venter het hom na bewering ook gevra wat dan van die ander drie verdagtes geword het, waarop hy geen antwoord ontvang het nie.

Die saak word tans deur die Gemeenskapspolisiëringsforum (GPF) ondersoek en indien voldoende antwoorde nie verkry word nie sal die saak na die NPA verwys word. Voorsitter van die GPF, Thys Eloff, sê indien die polisie hulle werk gedoen het sou die verdagte en die ander drie wat aan die polisie uitgewys is steeds inhegtenis wees.

Theo Pistorius van Molalatau Sekuriteit stem saam. “Die realiteit is dat die ondersoekbeamte verantwoordelik is vir die saak. Hy moet toesien dat alle relevante inligting ingesamel word. Hier praat ek van forensiese getuienis soos vingerafdrukke, gipsafdruk van die spoor en verklaring waarin die spoor vergelyk is met die skoen. Die ander inligting met verwysing na die verdagtes, die arrestasie of ten minste die ondervraging of registrasie van ‘n navraag om die inligting te bevestig moes gedoen geword het.

“Molalatau Sekuriteit se Hendrik Manyeke wat die spoor gevolg het se verklaring moes geneem gewees het en as getuie gedagvaar word vir die saak, wat ook nie gebeur het nie. Dit dui vir my daarop dat die polisie nie hulle werk op die toneel gedoen het nie.”

In reaksie op die voorval het die hoof van die speurafdeling, Kapt. RL Sekhukhune, die week gesê hy sal persoonlik ondersoek instel om vas te stel waarom vingerafdrukbewyse nie ingedien is nie en waarom die ander drie verdagtes nooit ondervrae is nie.

LEPHALALE - The housing backlog and insufficient transport for people living in and around Lephalale, Seleka and Shongoane have led to the rapid growth of an informal settlement in the shadow of Eskom’s Matimba power station.

The land belongs to Eskom, but since 2009 more and more shacks have been erected to a point where it is estimated that around 4000 people reside in the area without electricity, water or sanitation.

“This is a great challenge for the municipality,” says Strategic Manager, Khoroshi Motebele. “On the one hand we have people who have settled here illegally, something which we don’t want to encourage, but on the other hand

constitution to ensure that peoplehave water and sanitation.”According to Motebele the Department

of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) budgeted R70 million in the 2011/2012 book year for the building of 517 family units in Marapong. These two bedroom units will be available to rent and will benefit people who earn between R800 and R3500 a month. The municipality had to relocate 200 families from the land which is earmarked for the Coghsta units earlier this year and it is expected that building will commence in May 2013.

In the mean-time authorities are worried about the safety of especially children in the area. “We are cognisant of the fact that the

settlement could lead to the contamination of groundwater and subsequently the outbreak of disease in the area,” Motebele told Northern News on Wednesday.

Divisional Head of housing, Mpo Lekoloane visited the area recently and is determined to find a solution to the problem. Some of the strategies being

considered is to appoint an informal settlement officer at the Municipality to deal with such issues. Without encouraging further illegal settlements the municipality will look into providing basic services where possible.

“We will also look into strategies to improve transport from Seleka and Shongoane, because a lot of these people have homes in these rural areas but

have to commute 70 km to town everyday using transport which is not always reliable. We need to make it viable for residents to stay in their primary homes instead of settling illegally in Marapong which is obviously much closer to their workplace.

Northern News visited the settlement recently and found children playing on rubbish dumps next to the settlement.

The DA plans to build a structure in the new year to provide shade and a place of safety for children during the day. “The idea is to give the children something to do and to keep them from harm’s way,” DA councillor, Astrid Basson, said.

Residents at the settlement is adamant that they are there to stay, but would like to see service delivery from the municipality. “We can’t live like this we walk very far to get water and have to dig our own toilets,” one complained.

An ATM in Northam was bombed in the early morning hours of Wednesday 12 December 2012. According to sources, about 10 heav-ily armed men forced security guards at gun point to vacate the premises where after the culprits used explosives to bomb an ATM. By Wednesday midmorning, a reliable source said that due to the possibility of explosives that haven’t been discharged during the robbery, the bomb squad from Modimolle was on their way. Nobody was injured in the robbery attempt. Damages are still being assessed.

“Ons kon met die R16 000 genoeg kos koop om 45 pakkies met kruideniersware en vleis op te maak vir mense hierdie feesgety. Vyf van hierdie pakke gaan aan vrywilligers wat hier by die Vrouefederasie uithelp ten spyte van hul eie behoeftes en tekorte,” vertel Carike Lessing van die Vrouefederasie.

“Die ander 40 word uitgedeel onder gesinne waar ons ‘n werklike behoefte geïdentifiseer het. ‘n Groot deel van die 20 swart gesinne wat kerspakke gaan

Die organisasie se eerste doel is altyd om mense weer op die been te kry so ‘n groot deel van die bystand wat hulle bied is om mense te help werk soek. Daarom word hulp net op ‘n drie-maande grondslag verleed waartydens daar dan werksgeleenthede gevind word.

Op Vrydae gee die Vrouefederasie kos vir hawelose mense, dan staan daar dikwels rye behoeftiges voor die kantore in Ruiterweg.

Met Woord en daad

In die skool van God

Gebed:

Hemelse Vader, help my om te verstaan wat ek in die Bybel lees. En, help my om dit wat ek verstaan, ook te kan gaan doen. Amen.

Lees: Psalm 119:33-34Die woordjie “skool” roep nie by almal van ons goeie herinneringe op nie, maar die meeste van ons sal saamstem dat skool ’n belangrike deel van ons lewe uitgemaak het of steeds uitmaak.

Sonder die opvoeding wat ons daar ontvang het, sou ons moontlik nie vandag gewees het waar ons is nie.

Daar is ’n ander skool waarvan ons ook moet weet, naamlik God se skool. In hierdie skool matrikuleer ons nooit. In hierdie skool leer ons alles wat ten opsigte van ons verhouding met God en ons naaste belangrik is.

-God se skool is die Bybel, en Ps. 119:33-34 sê dat ons met die regte gesindheid by God se skool moet aanmeld.

Dit beteken dat ons gesindheid reg moet wees elke keer wanneer ons die Bybel in ons hande neem.

Wat is die regte gesindheid? Dit bestaan uit twee dinge. In die eerste plek moet ek erken dat ek nie die nodige kennis het om te leef soos God van my verwag nie. Ek moet Hom daarom om insig vra (34). Ek moet Hom vra om my te help om dit wat ek gelees het, te verstaan. In die tweede plek moet ek Hom ook vra hoe ek dit wat ek verstaan, kan toepas.

God laat die toepassing nie net aan ons oor nie. Hy help ons ook daarmee. So bly ons die hele tyd met die Bybel besig.

Neem vergifnis as ’n voorbeeld. Wanneer ons die Bybel lees, mag dit gebeur dat God ons daarop wys dat ons ’n sekere persoon moet vergewe. Maar hoe vergewe mens iemand anders?

Hierop gee die Bybel baie antwoorde,

byvoorbeeld dat ons bereid moet wees om selfs sewentig maal sewe keer te vergewe. En dat om te vergewe, beteken om nie weer die oortreding in die toekoms op te haal nie. Die Bybel leer ons nie net “wat” ons moet doen nie, maar ook “hoe” ons wat ons geleer het, moet toepas.

In God se skool word die verstand altyd aangespreek.

In ons tyd is dit belangrik dat ons dit weer sal hoor, want gevoel word dikwels ten koste van die verstand oorbeklemtoon. Ek weet nie van ’n terrein van ons lewe waarop ons nie ons verstand moet gebruik nie.

God vernuwe selfs ons verstand (Rom. 12:2), sodat ons dit reg kan gebruik. Op

elke terrein van ons kerklike en geloofslewe het ons nodig om ons verstand te gebruik. Daarom vra die digter vir insig en vir hulp in die toepassing van God se Woord.

As ons nie ons verstand reg gebruik nie, sal ons God nie op die regte manier kan dien nie.

As jy aan ’n kerk behoort waar kinders Sondagskool deurloop, wees dankbaar daarvoor.

Ons kan God nie reg aanroep as ons Hom nie reg ken nie. Ons kan Hom nie reg dien, as ons nie weet hoe Hy gedien wil word nie. Ons kan nie werklik in Jesus glo, as ons nie weet waarom ons in Hom moet glo nie. En ons kan nog minder dankbaar wees, as ons

nie weet waarvoor ons dankbaar moet wees nie.

By die instelling van die nagmaal, het Jesus twee keer aan sy dissipels gesê om hulle verstand te gebruik.

Na die instelling van die brood, het Hy gesê: “Gebruik dit tot my gedagtenis.” Hy het dieselfde gesê na die instelling van die wyn.

“Gebruik julle verstand. Dink terug aan wat Ek vir julle gedoen het.” Wie aan die kruis dink en wie glo in Hom wat daar gehang het, kan mos nie anders as om dankbaar te wees nie!

Waterberg FET college celebrates World Aids DayThe College held a Waterberg FET College CEO Mr. SP Mailula welcomed everyone and urges all present to avoid engaging themselves in risky activities.

“People have information about HIV and AIDS but choose to be ignorant. Make use of the information to safeguard and protect yourself, let’s be supportive to the infected ones. Let this information be your weapon. I will test for HIV and I urge you to follow the suit, it is important to know your status,” said Mr. Mailula.

Candles were lit in commemorating those who were killed by HIV and AIDS pandemic during the World AIDS Day function the Waterberg FET College held in partnership with the Red Cross at its Hotel School on December 1.

The keynote address was delivered by HIV Ambassador Charels Maponya from Turfloop, a young man who lives with HIV and AIDS. This brave and passionate man shared his story openly. “I am HIV positive and I decided to disclose my status. I have got a child, siblings and family to live for. In fact if you hide your status-then it automatically means you infect innocent souls,” he said.

“Living with HIV is simple, I am a living testimony. I was diagnosed when I was 21 years of age in 2003. Safely I can say HIV doesn’t kill as I am still strong, handsome and charming.” He quoted Mahatta Maghandi: “Be the change you want to see in the world”.

“Diabetes is the number one killer in the world while HIV and AIDS is manageable, treatable and controllable. Next year I am planning to throw myself a party for my 10-year HIV Anniversary,” Maponya said.

Maponya told delegates how he “signed a contract” with the virus. “I sat down on my chair opposite the virus, and then we agreed there will be no breach of contract. I am Lesiba and this HIV is Lesibana to me (indicating how small it is) HIV lives in my blood so if it wants to live then it has to let me live. If it kills me then it will automatically die. So I will live with it until the cure is found.”

He concluded by saying that people should live responsibly and healthy. Get tested for HIV and if you are positive then you should bear in mind that HIV is not a life sentence and it is not the end of the world. After the proceedings the College staff went for HIV tests.

Lt. Lesiba Muserwa received the award for being the best detective commander. With him is Cluster Commander, Col. Lucas Mogwaneng.

Captain Piet Venter received awards for being the best commander and also the best visible policing commander.

Best in Visible Policing support was rendered by Sergeant Hendrik Nel.

The best detective FCS member this year was warrant officer Madimetja Monene.

Cst Thabiso Tlakwana was the best LCRC member.

The best performing operational is Warrant Officer Baloy Khalalabi.

Polokwane — The Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport will adopt a zero tolerance approach to ensure road safety across the province this festive season.

Department spokesperson Joshua Kwapa said a zero tolerance approach would be enforced to make a meaningful contribution towards the achievement of the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, as the province was anticipating high traffic volumes from this week.

“The method is the integration of strict and intensive law enforcement tactics with focused publicity campaigns,” said Kwapa on Monday.

“High traffic volumes during the festive season on the roads leading to the province are expected as a result of the annual school and business closures, resulting in a massive exodus of holiday-makers from neighbouring provinces and countries.”

He said the department would also stage roadside promotions in all five districts to educate users on road safety and highlight common causes of accidents.

“We must confess that these accidents brought despair and alarm. However, while we acknowledge the depressing picture these accidents paint, we remain confident that our law enforcement preparations and

“We are calling on all road users to change their behaviour, observe all traffic regulations, exercise patience and further respect fellow road users.”

CrankbaitsOne of my most memorable fishing

trips north of our border was when we caught an amazing amount of really good nembwe, close to Kasane in Botswana, with regular bass crankbaits.

Fish for predatory tilapia species the same way you would fish for bass; look for cover, structure, and current breaks.

JigsOn a follow-up trip, this time fishing the

Zambezi north of Kasane, we discovered that nembwe absolutely love bass jigs. We experienced the most success by casting upstream towards the cover, and then allowing the current to wash the jigs downstream, always keeping contact between the rod, line and lure.

The most productive colours were anything with black/red/brown and orange skirt combinations and grub trailers.

I think most South African anglers know all about ‘dropshot’ fishing by know? In bass terms ‘dropshot’ fishing is something totally different from the saltwater equivalent.

If you are a bass angler you would be more familiar with the term ‘shaky head’ fishing. A ‘shaky head’ or ‘dropshot’ lure is basically just a bare lead jighead, dressed with a soft plastic lure.

For bass fishing we use worms, creature-, and fish-style baits. For saltwater fishing, most anglers use fish-style baits to imitate baitfish. These baits can be used successfully to target many tilapia species and catfish, and evidently with great success in salt water.

As a general rule of thumb, it seems that natural forage and food colours work best in fresh water (browns, greens, oranges, reds), whilst natural baitfish colours work best in salt water.

It’s holiday time again, and time to sort out the tackle for whichever fishing destination you may be heading out to.

I know one of the best parts of the preparation is shopping at your local tackle store. However, even though this is the season to be merry, it is also the season to spend lots of money, and for many, there is not a lot of money to spend on non-essential items, which is usually what those family members who are less fishing-inclined think of our very essential shopping list.

All is not lost though. If you already have a reasonable bass tackle collection, you should be able to go to several different locations around the country and north of the border, and successfully fish for most species of predatory fish with whatever you have in your tackle box.

Please note; for toothy critters, such as tigerfish and barracuda, you will need to attach wire/cable trace to the line, in front of your lure.

SpinnerbaitsI have caught all sorts of different

species on the trusty spinnerbait. If you are

fishing north of our borders you should be able to catch tigerfish, nembwe, catfish, and several tilapia species on this bait. Reds, oranges, browns and chartreuse are all good colours to use.

I have not fished much in coastal or estuarine waters but I am convinced this bait should attract many of the smaller juvenile predatory fish that take shelter in these protected waters.

In-Line SpinnersUse the largest spinner in your

tacklebox to target toothy fish like the feisty tiger. If a spinner can catch a tiger,

why would it not work on its saltwater cousins too? Replace the treble hook with a good quality single hook to increase your hookset ratio.
