MESSAGE FROM PASTOR BOB

Dear Friends in Faith,

When we think of the word “call” we usually think of pastors. Pastor Lisa and I each have a “Letter of Call” on file in the church office. The notion of “call” is meant to distinguish between a normal “employee” relationship and the relationship a pastor has with a congregation.

We believe that in the “call process” it is not that a congregation has found a pastor to employ, but that God has moved to connect a minister of Word and Sacrament with a congregation of Jesus’ disciples. The goal is to accom-plish together the mission God has for the congregation.

The only trouble with using “call” language for pastors is if we forget that “call” applies to all the baptized people of God. The church believes that the process that lead to your current employment is not any less a call process that the one that brought your pastors to this congregation. The church be-lieves that God has a plan and purpose for you in your daily work.

The only difference is that in secular employment your boss may not realize that you have this vocation from God. (Hopefully the church does not forget that about its pastors.) Your boss may think he/she is paying you so much an hour for digging so many feet of ditch or entering so many lines of computer code a day.

Of course, those things are the substance of your employment, and doing them excellently is service to humanity just in the very doing of it. HOWEV-ER, God has also put you where you are for a deeper purpose. You are an agent of the kingdom of God right where you work every day!

In June we blessed construction workers, builders, carpenters, etc. In July it will be people who work in the medical field and in August manufacturing. Pr. Lisa and I have an entire year of various vocations lined up.

On the first Sunday of each month we will announce which category of work-ers we will bless and on the second Sunday of the month we will do that brief blessing during the service. We look forward to acknowledging your “calling” and what a difference it makes in the world.

FROM BISHOP BRUCE BURNSIDE

(from The South–Central Synod’s June Newsletter)

The particular year I am remembering was a year when, the florist had particularly big red-blossomed geraniums for us—they were scarlet red blooms on steroids! Two hundred and more of them robed in foil of gold set the chancel of our church building ablaze with floral fire. Plenty of orange and red and yellow and gold ribbon added to the infernal mirage.

When it was time for the assembly to hear the holy story told once again...the story of tongues of fire, of locked doors, of a cacophony of sound and the chaos that swept over a confused flock of would-be, want-to-be, unsure how-to-be disciples, well-prepared Lutheran readers rose to their feet. They were positioned all over the sanctu-ary. When they stood, sizzling and whirling sound effects entered into the space just as their voices began to let loose with names—far away places, strange sounding places. It was the Pentecost story from the book of Acts. All speaking in different languages at once...at once in that Jerusalem room and all at once in our Sunday gathering tens of hundreds of years later.

It was not a novel idea to read the scripture this was on Pentecost Sunday. Chances are good that you have done it in your congregation; rounded up folks who could speak German, Norwegian, Spanish, maybe French or Swedish and a few other exotic languages, and made them global lectors for a moment.

On Monday she came to my office. She was, I will say, not a happy parishioner! “What was that all about?” she wanted to know. Well she really didn’t want to know what it was about, what she wanted was to let me know she did not like it at all! “It was a disgrace hearing all that noise. I couldn’t understand a thing. I was so disoriented and confused that I thought I was in a Holy Roller church with crazy Pentecostal speaking-in-tongues people! I hope you will never do such a thing again!” She was madder that Monday than she had been in the Sunday when an usher wore shorts to church.

There was no use in my trying to explain the reason for reading the text in so many languages all at once. It was not going to matter to her.

Don’t you think that what happened in Jerusalem that Pentecost day was, if anything, a moment in time that was turned upside down inside out, an encounter that was totally confusing, destabilizing, unsettling and disorienting for those disciples? There was nothing orderly, ordinary or tame about that Holy Spirit event.

But she was mad. Real mad. Don’t you dare pull something like that again kind of mad!

How true is it that we tell ourselves we believe in the Holy Spirit and then we get nervous and upset when the Holy Spirit shows up? Pentecost was a jolt. Pentecost picks up the Incarnation, grabs hold of the resurrection and toss-es it right into the assembly of disciples and demands that they deal with it! And it was darn disorienting! Star-tling. Now what do we do?

Pentecost means that God is more than a good and gentle man somewhere upstairs watching over things, once in awhile is getting mad. It means that Jesus is about being more than a good luck rabbit’s foot in our pockets to be stroked when we want a bit of magical charm to get us out of a jam. Pentecost is evidence that the Holy Spirit is more than a friendly ghost tossing gifts our way to perk up our personal resumes. Pentecost means that his incon-ceivable Trinity is determined to disturb our liaise faire ho hum approach to discipleship.

So I hope and pray that this Pentecost you will be knocked off your pins, that the divine magnate will befuddle your tired and true steady compass and set the needles spinning. I hope and pray that the Pentecost word will set you in a direction that leads to places you never imagined or maybe even hoped for, that Pentecost will make you dizzy and send you somewhere with a hint that God, in Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit is stirring the pot, fanning the flames, mixing the metaphors and inspiring the Church.

For Christ’s Sake,

† Bruce Burnside

On the Lighter Side. . .

God’s Accuracy

God’s accuracy may be observed in the hatching of eggs. For example: the eggs of the potato bug hatch in 7 days; those of the canary in 14 days; the eggs of ducks and geese hatch in 28 days; those of the mallard in 35 days; the eggs of the parrot and the ostrich hatch in 42 days. (Notice, they are all divisible by seven, the number of days in a week!)

God’s wisdom is revealed in His ar-rangement of sections and segments, as well as in the number of grains. Each watermelon has an even num-ber of stripes on the rind. Each or-ange has an even number of seg-ments. Each ear of corn has an even number of rows. Each stalk of wheat has an even number of grains. Every bunch of bananas has on its lowest row an even number of bananas, and each row decreases by one, so that one row has an even number and the next row an odd number. All grains are found in even numbers on the stalks, and the Lord specified thirty fold, sixty fold, and a hundred fold—all even numbers.

The waves of the sea roll in on shore twenty-six to the minute in all kinds of weather.

God has caused the flowers to blos-som at certain specified times during the day, so that Linnaeus, the great Botanist, once said that if he had a conservatory containing the right kind of soil, moisture and tempera-ture, he could tell the time of day and night by the flowers that were open and those that were closed!

The lives of each of you may be or-dered by the Lord in a beautiful way for His glory, if you will only entrust Him with your life. Only the One who made the brain and the heart can successfully guide them to a profita-ble end.

PENTECOST SUNDAY—May 27, 2012

We are currently trying to raise an addi-tional $2500 to replace the front doors of the church. The council received two separate quotes and the total cost will be approximately $5000. We have the other $2500 already set aside from pre-vious donations and fundraiser mon-ies. There will be a sign-up “door” set up in the narthex by June 24th. Please pick a square, or maybe two or three, to help pay for this needed expendi-ture. Each square will be the value of $25.

Music Music Music One of the many gifts that God has given to us is the gift of music. On the first Sun-day of each month we’d like to invite stu-dents and young people to share their talents by providing music for the services during the prelude and offering times. Piano, band instruments and vocals are welcomed; beginners are encouraged as well as those who are accomplished musi-cians. If you or your child are interested in participating in providing service music at Faith, please sign up in the narthex for either the 8am or 10am service on July 1, August 5 or September 2. Any questions? Talk with Lisa Weisensel! Start practicing!

With the adoption of the “Maintenance with Mission Match” program in June, the Finance com-mittee recommended $500. The Council agreed in their June meeting. As a result, $250 will be designated for maintenance and $250 will be sent to the ELCA Good Gifts mission for two sheep that will pro-vide wool and milk.

Summer Preaching Series

2012

ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A

CONFIRMAND?

As we worship together this summer we will use some wonderful resources that we have available to make the summer preaching especially engaging; and perhaps we may even learn something!!

Faith’s Confirmation program uses a PowerPoint based curriculum called “Here We Stand”. We use it for our study of the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism, but there is much more great material in supplemental areas than we could ever hope to utilize. Those materials will provide us with the subject for sermons this summer.

Of course the name comes from the television series “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader”. On that show adults are asked to answer questions from standard ele-mentary school textbooks. The idea, of course, is that we’ve all forget some things since we were 10!

The idea at Faith this summer isn’t to quiz people on what they remember from confirmation – or to award prizes for those with good memories either. The idea is to have some fun with basics of the Christian faith as Lutherans understand it, to get some insight into what confirmation is like these days, and to wake up some of our sleeping memories of what Confirmands know and we might have forgotten.

Are You Smarter than a Confirmand? We’ll have fun finding out this summer. Worship is at 8:00 and 10:00 every Sunday from May 27th until September 2nd.

Notes from the Finance Committee: Shown below is the financial information for 2012 as compared to 2011. We did not need to use money from sav-ings during the month of May to make payroll and pay bills. Thank you for your response in your giving.

1. Can you calculate: a. $10,000 + $4,000 = ? b. $10,000 - $4,000 = ? c. $10,000 + (3% of $10,000) + 1% of the sum of $10,000 and (3% of $10,000) =? 2. Are you interested in helping our congregation be good stewards of our finances? 3. Can you meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:30? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the questions, the Finance Committee would like you to join our group. If you can-not answer question #1, we don’t care. Our group is paid very well: the pay is heavenly. All kidding aside, we are looking for more volunteers to join the finance committee. Please consider learning more about the financial de-tails of our congregation and how we are involved in spreading the Word of God. You can contact any of the Fi-nance Committee for more details.
