Most all of us are familiar with the term Summer Slide; that documented intellectual loss students experi-ence due to long summer breaks away from school. But were you aware of how very severe that annual
loss actually is? According to Dr. Megan Kuhfeld, a Research Scientist at NWEA, “In the summer following third grade, students lose nearly 20 percent of their school-year gains in reading and 27 percent of their school-year gains in math. By the sum-mer after seventh grade, students lose on average 36 percent of their school-year gains in reading and a whopping 50 percent of their school-year gains in math. In other words, summer learning loss increases with age through elemen-tary and middle school – a troubling trend that should be examined further.” (Megan Kuhfeld, PhD, July 16, 2018) A troubling trend, indeed! Summer Slide is one reason why our bright and enthusiastic staff at ACDL works so diligently to provide free educa-tional programming and fun reading incentives throughout the summer months. From art to celebrating the 50th an-niversary of the Moon Landing to Bree the Rooster, there’s always some fun activity planned for children and families of all ages. And this summer our Geneva Library will join our Ashtabula Library in collaborating with the Ashtabula County Community Action Agency to provide free summer lunches through their Summer Food Service Program. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free nutritious meals, for children through age 18, to help chil-dren in low-income areas get the nutrition they need throughout the summer months when they do not have access to meals at school. Meals are free to all children; no enrollment and no eligibility required. (ACCAA Summer Food Ser-vice Flier, 2018) So whether it’s fun, food, or fundamentals - ACDL is where you will find it!
Root beer floats and chalk art will kick-off Summer Reading ACDL is taking it to the streets...er...sidewalks...as we rev up for a summer of adventure, fun activities, and reading! This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories” will engage readers of all ages. Everyone, everything has a story. To kick-off a summer of fun, Ashtabula’s Miss Melissa will be scooping ice cream and cooking hot dogs for the Sidewalk Chalk and Root Beer Floats event for all ages on Wednesday, May 22 from 4:00p.m. until 5:00p.m. On Thursday, May 23, Teens will be celebrating with Miss Tina in Geneva after school. Following the teens, the program will open up to anyone who is interested in a root beer float, a hot dog, and creating sidewalk chalk pictures. Everyone and anyone can register for the ACDL sum-mer reading program at both locations! Spend the summer with ACDL and add to your story!
