United Way of Greater Stark County is a volunteer-driven organization.Its Board of Directors is composed of knowledgeable community leaders is representative of the entire Greater Stark County area and the communities we serve. The Board establishes policy and allocates resources to assure that United Way is properly managed. Volunteers who serve on Impact Councils determine how funds will be invested into health and human service programs.

These volunteers are people just like you. Those volunteer groups, which include people with expertise in each area, make recommendations on priorities, identify programs that will help our community reach those goals, and even recommend partnerships or changes in public policy that should be adopted to influence change.

Based on community needs, Impact Councils allocate funds to programs that work to address the root causes of those issues. United Way’s Board of Directors makes final funding decision approval. United Way has a group of dedicated staff members that oversee the day to day operations of the organization.

ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY During the fall of 1832, Alexis de Tocqueville, a young Frenchman, traveled nearly 8,000 miles across America speaking with individuals about the “great experiment” in democracy. The spirit of selflessness and cooperation among Americans amazed de Tocqueville. His written work, Democracy in America, reflects his admiration for the American spirit of voluntary action for the common good.

Founded in 1981 by Thomas F. Frist, Jr., the Tocqueville Society echoes the American spirit of cooperation and good will which he witnessed in early America. It personifies the true meaning of philanthropy, with members giving $10,000 or more annually. In 2016, there were more than 420 established United Way Tocqueville Societies, which raised $518.5M among 25,208 members.

CREATE YOUR LEGACYIn 1996, the Agency Endowment Fund (formerly United Way Foundation) was established as a way for donors to provide endowed gifts to the annual fundraising campaign.

The fund’s permanent assets are held at the Stark Community Foundation.

There are a number of financial vehicles to consider and the best ption for you will depend on your personaland financial situation. We encourage you to consult with your financial planner and/or attorney. These gifts offer the potential for income tax deductions and some may reduce the size of your estate and therefore reduce estate taxes. In addition, some employers match employee gifts which can lower your cost.

There are several ways to care forever and give, including cash, bequest, securities, life insurance, real estate and charitable trusts. Please consider the following options:

• Donating an outright gift of cash or appreciated stock• Designating United Way of Greater Stark County as the beneficiary of a retirement account • Designating United Way of Greater Stark County in your will (making a bequest)• Making United Way of Greater Stark County the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, • either an existing policy or a new policy• Creating a “split gift” such as a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust

and charitable lead trust
