NNaavvyy HHoocckkeeyy 22000088-22000099 OOuuttllooookkComing off back-to-back 20 win sea-

sons, the Midshipmen of Navy look tocontinue their winning ways in what isexpected to be a breakout year for the NavyHockey program. In a year of firsts underfirst year Head Coach Mike Fox, last year'steam christened the magnificent new Dr. JohnJ. McMullen Hockey Arena and nearlyknocked off perennial American CollegiateHockey Association (ACHA) powerhousePenn State at home in a thrilling 3-2 loss in thefirst round of the Eastern States CollegiateHockey League (ESCHL) Playoffs. It was alsoNavy Hockey's first year in the newly formedESCHL, the ACHA's premier Division 1 league in the east. Thisyear's team looks to build on the experiences of last season, chal-lenging for the top spot in the ESCHL, while looking to gainnational recognition as one of the top D1 college hockey clubs inthe country.

This year the Midshipmen will be more comfortable at home inthe Brigade Sports Complex, skating on the Olympic-size rink thatmeets NCAA standards. The arena currently has a seating capacityfor 800 spectators but has the capacity to expand to more than 3,000seats. Named in honor of the late Dr. John J. McMullen, a NavalAcademy Distinguished Graduate from the class of 1940, and hiswife Jacqueline, Navy's new rink is the envy of many NCAA andACHA hockey programs throughout the country.

TThhee SScchheedduulleeNavy Hockey's 39th year as a Club Sport at the Naval Academy

is highlighted by an aggressive 40 game regular season scheduleagainst many of the very best ACHA D1 teams. In addition to play-ing 4 games against each league opponent in the ESCHL, whichincludes Penn State, University of Rhode Island, University of

Delaware, and Drexel University, this year Navyhosts Iowa State, West Chester University, andWashington and Jefferson College in the NavalAcademy Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament. The team also travels to Ohio to play Kent Stateand John Carroll University, two top MidwesternACHA teams, and plays two games apieceagainst Michigan-Dearborn, Pitt, and CentralOklahoma at home. Once again, the alwayspopular Crabpot Tournament at McMullenArena will consist of four teams fromMaryland - Navy, University of Maryland,UMBC, and Towson University.

The quality of this year's schedule posi-tions the Midshipmen for a strong run at significant postseasonplay. With at least 25 games scheduled against ranked D1 teams thisseason, Navy has one of the toughest schedules of the 53 ACHAD1 schools.

In April, as an extra bonus, Navy Hockey will be involved in sev-eral activities associated with the Frozen Four, when the NavalAcademy and the Greater Washington Sports Alliance host the 2009NCAA Division 1 National Championship at the Verizon Center inWashington, D.C.

RReettuurrnniinngg PPllaayyeerrssThis year's senior class has endured a period of transition for the

Navy Hockey program. Not only were the "Firsties" the last classto play on the Yard in the historic Dahlgren Hall Ice Rink, they alsoplayed a full season without a home sheet of ice while the new rinkwas being built. As juniors, they were involved in Navy's move tothe ESCHL, and began playing their home games in McMullen IceArena when it was unveiled at the beginning of last season.

This senior class is one of the largest in recent memory, withnine players returning for their final year. The team is led by domi-nant ACHA players Matt Swezey, Charlie Daniel and Alex Wallis.

These three seniors produced 46 goals and 62 assists last season andare looking to provide even more offense this year. Jack Cullitonand Jeff Martin will also be counted on to provide a consistent scor-ing threat. Matt Keller and Eric Bowen are back after their first sea-son with Navy Hockey and provide key leadership for the team onand off the ice. Also returning for their Senior year are JonWesterman, Jeff Martin, and Jeff Dubinsky. “Westy” is a key face-off man with a knack for scoring big-time goals, while 'Marty' is astrong, smart Minnesotan with great skills and hockey sense. JeffDubinsky is a solid forechecking forward known for his tightdefensive play and energy.

No discussion of the "Firsties" would be complete withoutmentioning Nolan Anliker. Unfortunately, Nolan was not granted amedical redshirt year by the ACHA, losing a year of eligibility atNavy as a result of playing an injury riddled season at Bethel College(NCAA D3) before becoming a Midshipman. Nolan was a tremen-dous on-ice asset to the program. He was a three year letter winnerat Navy and was awarded the Navy Hockey Leadership Award lastseason as a junior. Although his presence on the ice will be missedduring his senior year, he will remain a key leader of this year's teamas the President of the Navy Hockey Club.

Complementing the large senior class are junior forwardsKeegan Kinkade and Calen Mims, both high quality, two-way hock-ey players. Forwards Zak Bishop, Sam Carlson, Stevie Csutoros,Justin Jackson, Michael Orzetti, and Jake Stevens-Haas return fortheir second season with the program and add considerable depth tothis year's Navy Hockey squad.

Defensively, Patrick Heitman, Andrew Ochalek, and ChandlerBrewer will backstop this year's team. These three strong skatingjuniors will be vital to the team's success. They will be supported bytalented sophomore defenseman, Jonathan Wheeler.

Between the pipes, Navy has two high quality and experiencedjunior goaltenders in Eric Anderson and Jeremey Estevez. Juniorgoalie Alex Tidei returns for another year and will also compete forplaying minutes.

TThhee NNeewwccoommeerrssSteady defensemen Derek Grady and Andy Lazzaro join this

year's team for the first time as juniors. After sitting out a year toretain eligibility, sophomore Matt Roberts will also help cement thisyear's outstanding defensive corps.

In addition to adding three new upperclassmen, this year NavyHockey is proud to have assembled one of its most impressive Plebeclasses ever. The Class of 2012 features 8 young men with excep-tional hockey skills. These newcomers played for highly regarded

high school, prep school, and junior hockey programs last year andinclude free wheeling forwards Thomas Fick (Marine, MN) andMitch Pulver (Chippewa Falls, WI). On defense, Gary Beier(Arnold, MD) is also a very welcome addition to this year's squadand Jameson Marshall (Barrington, RI) is a very impressive fresh-man goaltender who could see considerable playing time in net thisseason. Other freshmen rounding out this talented group of play-ers include forward Kevin Frederick (Minneapolis, MN), forwardJim Tumolo (Turnersville, NJ), defenseman Pat McAleer (Orono,Maine) and defenseman Scott Mecham (Salt Lake City, UT).

TThhee EExxcciitteemmeennttNavy Hockey's total commitment to victory, aggressiveness, and

selfless style of team play will certainly thrill the packed-house atMcMullen Arena during the 2008-2009 campaign. TheMidshipmen's unrelenting and coordinated system of offense, defense, and neutral zone play will make the team competitive inevery game right down to the final buzzer. As Navy contends foran ESCHL Championship and bids for its first ACHA NationalChampionship, Navy Hockey fans will enjoy watching the intense,hard-hitting, fast-paced action on the brilliant Olympic-size ice sur-face at McMullen Area. The players appreciate your enthusiasticsupport and thank you for cheering them on to victory!

Coach Fox enters his second year at the helm of theUnited States Naval Academy Men's Hockey Team. In hisrookie year, he led a team of returning but inexperiencedNavy Hockey players to consecutive 20-game wins for thefirst time ever. Coach Fox's "TEAM" approach and lackof fear for taking on top ranked teams has enabled NavyHockey to contend at a national level. The success of lastyear's team leaves the club poised for a strong nationalstanding during the 2008-2009 season.

After only one year as Head Coach, Coach Fox wasselected as one of eight coaches from across the countryto coach at the World University Games tryout camp andassist in the selection of Team USA for the February 2009games. He attributes his selection to his team's tremen-dous success last year but it comes as no surprise to NavyHockey. The team sees his daily desire to teach his play-ers, his focus on "team-first", and his determination to ele-vate hockey at the United States Naval Academy to thehighest collegiate levels possible, as the reasons for hisprestigious selection.

Given his background, it is not surprise that Coach Foxemphasizes the development of skills for team success.Coach Fox began skating on the frozen ponds ofMinnesota at age three and played his first organized hock-ey in one of the nation's first and finest youth hockey pro-grams, the Edina Hockey Association. Not long after, heplayed for Blake School, an institution steeped in hockeytradition. At Blake, he was a four-year letterman and teamcaptain. Coach Fox often gives credit to Blake School forhelping him to develop his hockey skills and for providinghim with a top notch education. As the Navy Hockey team started its play informally on an Annapolis area pond in the late 1960s, so The Friends of NavyHockey (FNH) began in the early 1990s as an informal support organization of former hockey-playing alumni giving freely oftheir time to support the team. That early effort has now evolved into today's alumni-led organization which is involved in vir-tually all aspects of the team's operation and development. These contributions range from fundraising, to equipment and uni-form purchases, informal recruiting through a player alumni and player parent network, annual publication of a media guide andschedule poster, and other projects as requested by the coaching staff, officer representative and the team itself.

Every year former player alumni from around the world come to the Academy for a weekend of competitive hockeyagainst the current team. The Annual Navy Hockey Alumni Game Weekend is in essence a tribute to the current team fromthe Long Blue Line of hockey graduates, and a chance to measure the current team in battle on the ice. The goal of FNH isto help Navy Hockey become the best collegiate hockey program possible, and to support the development of the team towhatever competitive level Academy officials and the Naval Academy Athletic Association determine appropriate.

That hockey is a genuine warrior sport is beyond question. The sport has been played at West Point and the Air ForceAcademy at the NCAA Division I Level for generations. FNH recognizes that, in continuing to develop the Navy Hockeyprogram, our organization will in turn allow our alma mater to welcome more of the talented and brightest as they reach col-lege age and seek a forum for their hockey talents, followed by a challenging career in which skills learned on the ice - intenseteam play, quick decisions, a total commitment to victory - are directly applicable to the warfare specialties of today's navaland Marine officers.

In a season full of firsts, Navy Hockey is pleased toannounce the selection of Midshipman First Class MattSwezey to represent the United States and TEAM USA at theupcoming Winter World University Games in Harbin, Chinafrom February 18-28, 2009. A native of Cohoes, New York,Matt Swezey is the first hockey player from the United StatesNaval Academy to be selected toTEAM USA.

Matt started playing icehockey when he was four yearsold for the Capital YouthHockey in the Albany, NewYork area. As a Squirt at age12, his team won the New YorkState Championship. Mattthen went to Shaker HighSchool in Latham, New York, where he played varsity hockeyfor all four years. The teamwon the Section IIChampionship during his freshman year. For his senior year,he was selected as Captain of the team, and his team won theSuburban Council Championship and the New York StateRegional Qualifier. Matt was selected First Team All-Sectionand 2nd Team All-State. He was also recognized as an AlbanyTimes Union Scholar Athlete and a member of Shaker High'sNational Honor Society.

The son of a 1980 graduate of the United States MilitaryAcademy at West Point, Midshipman Swezey chose the NavalAcademy during an unplanned stop by his family during thespring break of his sophomore year of high school. Whilethey were passing through the area, his family decided to seeAnnapolis for the first time. After Matt listened to the pres-entation at the Admission's Office, he was hooked and Navy

was his first choice even though Army was recruiting him toplay Division 1 lacrosse.

Every day, the United States Naval Academy strives toaccomplish its mission to develop midshipmen "morally, men-tally, and physically." Midshipman Matt Swezey is the person-ification of this mission.

Matt has achieved a 3.72 cumulative GPA in hisMechanical Engineering Majorand a 3.58 Military GPA. He iscurrently on theSuperintendent's List and hasbeen on an Academic HonorRoll in each of his six priorsemesters.

Matt Swezey has been theembodiment of the growth ofNavy Hockey. He was an imme-diate presence on Navy's defen-sive corps as a plebe because ofhis size, puck handling skills, andslap shot. After two and a half

seasons of playing defense, he was moved to the forwardposition in order to fill a void. Even though he had neverplayed forward in any type of organized hockey, he rose to thechallenge and netted 24 goals in only 18 games. At the end ofthe season the accolades began to pour in. He was namedTeam MVP at the annual team banquet and finished the sea-son as both the leading scorer and the leading goal scorer. Hewas named an Academic All-American and was selected to theESCHL 2nd-Team All-League.

Matt will proudly represent both the United States Navyand the United States at the 2009 World University Games.
