“I want to thank all of the people who have donated so many items and financial support to help the less

fortunate in our food program.

Our next action to close out the year is the Children’s Christmas Party coming up on December 19. We are

currently collecting gifts to be given out to the children. NOTE: Please Do Not Wrap Your Gift. I will have

gift requests on the Christmas Giving Trees in the church. (Gift cards or cash is acceptable). Please bring your

gifts to the Rectory before Friday, December 18.

Currently we assist 115-120 families each week. We have 15-20 staff members that support various tasks to

take care of the daily activities.

Again, I want to thank everyone who have donated their time and money to make these events successful.

Surf’s Up at St. Rose!

Mr. John Sanders, school principal and surfing enthusiast, has brought surfing to St. Rose! The surf program is anchored

by a Science of Surfing elective class, open to students in grades 6-8, which meets on Fridays. Students in grades 6-8 can

also be members of the school’s Surf Team, which competes in the Middle School Division of the Scholastic Surf Series

against schools from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara. Also, the school developed a Surfing Club, which is open to all ages

(parents, too!) and meets on weekends at various beaches. Members gain ocean knowledge, develop skills, and most

importantly, share fellowship. You do not need to know how to surf to join the team or club; novices are encouraged to

participate.

“Kids learn what a huge difference there is between what they think they can achieve and what they actually can achieve,” Sanders says.

“They face the moment-by-moment challenges that the ocean, weather conditions, and other surfers can bring. In surfing, as in life, you have

to ‘take a few on the head’ to catch that wave, but when you do, it’s pure magic!”

Why are some RCIA participants dismissed in

the middle of the Mass?

This Sunday, at one of the morning Masses, those

adults and children preparing to be baptized into

the Catholic Church, and those preparing for full

communion will be dismissed at the end of the

Liturgy of the Word. This will continue each

Sunday until Easter when, at the Easter Vigil,

those who are ready will join us at the Table of the

Eucharist for the first time. The parish is not

sending them out because they are somehow

“unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the

Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the

table of the Eucharist, Mother Church still has an

obligation to feed those who have entered into a

relationship with her through the Rite of

Acceptance and Welcoming which was celebrated

recently. God’s Word is their only food during

this period. Instead, the participants depart from

the Mass with one or more RCIA team members,

to discuss the Mass readings for that Sunday and

to experience more fully the impact of the

Scriptures in their lives. This time is known as

“Reflection on the Word.”

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable

for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for

training in righteousness, that the one who

belongs to God may be complete, equipped for

every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The conflicts of the early Christians in Corinth are in many ways similar to our struggles today

as Christians. They, too, witnessed division,

scandal, immorality, persecution and other trials. In response, St. Paul taught the

Corinthians about the Church as the Body of

Christ, introducing them to the most powerful gift of all: the Eucharist. Join us for the Bible study of First

Corinthians at St. Rose of Lima School in room 8 at 7:00pm

HOMELESS SHELTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our Mother Teresa Christian Service helps the homeless of

Simi Valley in a special way during the winter months

from November through March. It represents our Catholic

community in an ecumenical effort called

P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter). This program

provides shelter every night of the week, in a different

church or hall, during the five harshest months of win-

ter. St. Rose supplies night monitors every oth-

er Saturday night. The night monitors act as hosts for our

guests, providing a movie, snacks and coffee, etc., during

the evening and then breakfast in the morning before the

guests leave. The volunteers stay overnight from 7:30 pm

until 7:30 am the next morning. Adult volunteers are

greatly needed for this. If you can help or have any ques-

tions, please call Dave Burciaga, the St. Rose coordinator,

at (805) 795-6974. Thank you.

Safety is key even when visiting Santa Claus Visiting Santa Claus can be a grand and positive

childhood experience. However, some people who

seek to bring Santa to life in a child’s world are not

deserving of our trust. Make sure your child knows

that there are special rules for Santa and that

parents or guardians must always be with the child

when he or she visits Santa. One rule to consider is

encouraging your child to stand next to Santa or sit

on the floor between his feet rather than sitting on

his lap. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Safety

for Children AND Santa’s Helpers,” email:

DID YOU KNOW? SABIA USTED?
