Dear brother and sister Elks,

Thank you for electing me as your Exalted Ruler for 2015-2016. We are on the right path

to help our community be a better place to live. Moving forward, we have positioned our

lodge to be a great lodge and I see my role as “how do I help this lodge to achieve the

goal to move from good to great”. So here are the three words I am going to use to

achieve this goal, my theme as they say. Communication, Cooperation, Support.

Communication - Well this is a simple one. We need to talk more to each other. I have found over the years

many good ideas go by the wayside and are lost because it was not communicated to others. Sometimes issues

arise only to find out later it was only a miscommunication, both parties just never talked to one other. The

other half of communication is listening. Someone may be talking and have great ideas on ways to help

veterans, or the children of our community but if you are not actively listening than no communication is even

taking place.

Cooperation - Working together for the common good. I have seen greatness already when we cooperate.

Last year we hosted the State convention here at the Augusta lodge, a lot of work went in to this event, from

giving the lodge some new paint, printing brochures, planning meals, registration, entertainment and

transportation. Every member asked how I can help. There were many good comments saying what a great

job was done.

The district one soccer shoot out was hosted here this year. This is where the entire soccer winners for New

York and New England came to participate. Again I saw greatness in cooperation. From transporting parents

and kids to the soccer site, filling gift bags and feeding a large group of people.

We, in a course of one day, set up for breakfast, cooked a hot breakfast, tore down breakfast than set up for

lunch, fed lunch to this large group, tore down for lunch and set up for a dinner. There were many good

comments afterward on how well the event went.

This year we will be having an elk summer music festival on JULY 31 AND AUG 1 here at the lodge. It will

be outside under a huge tent. Many local bands and acts will be showcased. I know the membership will

show cooperation and help make this a great event.

Lastly Support - This is an area where we will have many opportunities to achieve going from good to great.

Let’s start looking at functions here at your lodge and why the function is being held and not who is running

the function. Remember, member elks are running functions for homeless vets, disadvantaged youth in the

community, lodge improvements, children’s Christmas parties, scholarships, Maine Children’s Cancer and

many other worthy causes. This year all events will need your help to achieve greatness. I LOOK

FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT THIS YEARS EVENTS TO SUPPORT YOUR LODGE.

Another type of support we need is to our new members. Many times new Elks are installed in the lodge and

they sit by themselves and no one talks to them. And then we wonder how come we never see them anymore.

All members need to introduce themselves to new members and just have a conversation with them to

hopefully make them feel welcome and want to return.

Communication, Cooperation, Support. THESE THREE WORDS ARE GOING TO START HEADING

US IN A DIRECTION FROM A GOOD LODGE TO A GREAT LODGE.

Yours in Elkdom

Wes Decampos

Impact Grant News

Well things are moving right along at the Augusta Boys and Girls Club. We ended the first quarter with a few

trips and some great moments. The Teens have been tubing, bowling and swimming. They also took part in a

game show night which included Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Minute to Win It and Fear Factor! Darren Joyce

– Program Director of the ABGC speaks out:

“I have been with the ABGC for a while now. Over the years I have had a lot of wonderful moments, enough to

know the difference between being caught up in a great moment and to be able to see something special, and tonight ranks very high on my list of best and special moments at the Club. Last night we did a TV Game Show Night at the Club. We had Jeopardy, Price is Right, Minute 2 Win It, and Fear Factor.

What made tonight so special are two amazing groups of people. First, the Augusta Elks Lodge #964, Impact Mentors who all jumped in and worked so hard making dinner and keeping all the games moving so smoothly. I saw some wonderful relationships between mentors and mentees blossoming into such mutual respect and appreciation of each other. Most of the mentors have been with the project since it began 15 months ago. I am so appreciative of their commitment and dedication to the Club.

And second, the Teens were AMAZING tonight, they had the most positive attitudes, demonstrated incredible sportsmanship, everyone participated with enthusiasm and gave the mentors a tremendous thank you at the end of the evening. The best night happened right at the Club. That was a special evening, and in the next few days pictures will be posted. Thank you.”

--- Darren Joyce

I would like to welcome Norm & Gail Grasse, and Jeanne Sonia to our mentoring team! If you would like to become a Teen Mentor please reach out to me. I would like to thank all the Mentors who give their time as a volunteer at the Augusta Boys and Girls Club.

I would like this opportunity to first of all

thank the 2014-2015 House committee

members for their dedication and hard work in

helping to make this past year the first in over

five years to operate in the black, along with

the Officers and endless volunteers that

contributed to our successful year. I would

also like to welcome the new House

committee for year 2015-2016, Sara Bangs &

Ryan Fifield, John & Aurilla Holt, Greg Ruby,

Jack Thibodeau, Dave Chasse, and newcomers

Vic Guimond, Gil Gagne & George Jones. We have come a long way with a long way to go. I

also would like to take this time to congratulate “Elk of the Year” Aurilla Holt. Aurilla worked

hard putting on the Christmas show, re-decorating the Banquet room, helping at functions and

bringing a positive influence to the House Committee. I would be remiss without mentioning

another award winner this year “John Holt” Behind every good woman is a man! If any

member has ideas, or issues that would like to be discussed please feel free to stop by and have

a drink with me, I am always open to every opinion and idea.
