I met Erica Collins of Collins Catering at the WOCC Lead and Feed and booked them for an event our company held. Their prices were very competitive and the menu was full of variety. Our customers loved the lunch, everything was warm, fresh and beautifully displayed. The staff came prepared making the set up and break down flawless. Last October, the Chamber held its annual Board Retreat with the main focus of moving forward from “Relic to Relevant”; the Chamber’s new battle cry for 2010. I along with incoming and outgoing board members and the Chamber staff began by identifying the relics that we wanted to place into extinction and with what relevance we would like to replace them.

It was easy to identify a rather large relic that the WOCC was clinging to and that turned out to be our “Business Directory” housed on our Web site. We had just finished revamping our web site by implementing many user friendly features, thus enabling the user to maneuver throughout the site with ease. If cavemen were alive when the dinosaurs roamed, our business directory would be the dinosaur that knocked them off their feet. The “Business Directory” is outsourced to a Chamber specific vendor and that vendor was living in the past. It wasn’t allowing us to move forward, instead it was moving us backward. It was difficult to search for Chamber businesses and registering for Chamber events was an even more daunting task. In keeping with “Relic to Relevant”, we decided to change vendors. After a long process of research we agreed to contract with Chamber Master to maintain our new “Business Directory, on our Web site and internally for our database. The banishing of this “relic” is important to all Chamber members because our “Business Directory” is now available for the World Wide Web to access our Chamber member businesses. The maneuver ability this program has allows all of us to maintain and access our records quickly with a few keystrokes. With a Chamber issued login and password, members are able to change their own listings including phone numbers. Most importantly, members can inscribe their own business descriptions with the most relevant information.

Not only can members create their own business descriptions, they are also able to add promotional offers called, “Hot Deals” with a link right on the WOCC homepage. Read further into this newsletter and discover the many useful functions of this new “relevant” directory.

While on the subject of relevance, the WOCC’s Best Fest comes to mind! Congratulations to nearly 80 of our businesses that took advantage of this tremendous promotional event. THE WEST ORANGE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’S “BEST” BEST FEST EVER!

The stars aligned, there wasn’t a cloud insight, truly the definition of a Chamber of Commerce kind of day as the West Orange Chamber recently celebrated the BEST, Best Fest “The Taste of West Orange” to date. There was great food, drinks, music and laughter into the night.

The attendees were not the only winners during Best Fest. Votes for the best food, best dessert and booth were recorded by volunteer survey takers during the course of the evening and totaled by the Chamber Team right before the close of the event. Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar marched away with the bragging rights of “Best Food”, The Melting Pot celebrated consecutive years winning the title of “Best Dessert” and Bonefish Grill picked up the title for “Best Booth”. The voting was incredibly close. There were many favorites as the surveys testified, proof that our vendors exceeded all expectations.”

If you were not able to attend, you missed an exceptional event. The good news is that the Chamber is already strategizing for the 9th Annual Best Fest.

Our sincere thank you to our Sponsors; Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Alarie Design Associates, Cen-tryLink, Health Central, The West Orange Times, DRB Benefits Group, Central Florida Lifestyle Publications, Nelson’s Tents & Events, Southwest Orlando Bulletin, Winter Garden Village at Fowler Groves, Form Com-munity, Boyette, Cummins & Nailos, Attorneys at Law and West Orange Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, P. Winter Garden Listens to the Business Community by Stina D’Uva

Back in September 2003, the city of Winter Garden adopted an overlay ordinance for properties along Highway 50. This ordinance was similar to ordinances adopted by the county, as well as those adopted by the Town of Oakland and the City of Ocoee. The ordinances all established a variety of site, landscaping and amenity standards, as well as building façade standards for both new and existing development when substantial improvements were made to the property or building. After adoption of the ordinance, issues arose in implementation and the city knew that it needed to reexamine the ordinance.

In April 2008, a Board comprised of business owners and other stakeholders in Winter Garden were tasked at reviewing the ordinance and addressing the issues and drafting revisions.. The West Orange Chamber, after review of a revised ordinance through the Economic Development Committee, recommended support by the Chamber Board of Directors. Letters of support were sent to the Mayor and Commissioners. The Chamber supports these revisions since the changes are in direct response to concerns voiced by the business community. Some changes recommended include increase in lettering sizes on building facades, reduction in side and front setbacks, increase in monument size heights and other business friendly changes.

After two years of review and several public workshops, the ordinance was recently approved for adoption by the city’s Planning and Zoning Board. The first reading of the ordinance before the city commissioners will be on Thursday, 5/27 at 6:30pm and the final adoption hearing will be on Thursday, June 10 at 6:30pm. For the ordinance, visit www.cwgdn.com.

IR-2010-38, New for 2010: Tax Credit Helps Small Employers Provide Health Insurance Coverage

WASHINGTON ― Many small businesses and tax-exempt organizations that provide health insurance coverage to their employees now qualify for a special tax credit, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Included in the health care reform legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, approved by Congress and signed by President Obama on March 23, the credit is designed to encourage small employers to offer health insurance coverage for the first time or maintain coverage they already have. In general, the credit is available to small employers that pay at least half the cost of single coverage for their employees. “This credit provides a real boost to eligible small businesses by helping them afford health coverage for their employees,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “We urge small businesses and tax-exempt employers to look closely at this important tax break - which is already effective - to see if they qualify.”

The maximum credit is 35 percent of premiums paid in 2010 by eligible small business employers and 25 percent of premiums paid by eligible employers that are tax-exempt organizations. In 2014, this maximum credit increases to 50 percent of premiums paid by eligible small business employers and 35 percent of premiums paid by eligible employers that are tax-exempt organizations. The credit is specifically targeted to help small businesses and tax-exempt organizations that primarily employ low and moderate income workers. It is generally available to employers that have fewer than 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees paying wages averaging less than $50,000 per employee per year. Because the eligibility formula is based in part on the number of FTEs, not the number of employees, many businesses will qualify even if they employ more than 25 individual workers.

The maximum credit goes to smaller employers – those with 10 or fewer FTEs – paying annual average wages of $25,000 or less.

Eligible small businesses can claim the credit as part of the general business credit starting with the 2010 income tax return they file in 2011. For tax-exempt employers, the IRS will provide further information on how to claim the credit.

The IRS will use postcards to reach out to millions of small businesses that may qualify for the credit. The postcards will encourage small business owners to take advantage of the credit if they qualify.

More information about the credit, including tax tips, guides and answers to frequently asked questions, is now available on the IRS Web site, IRS.gov.

Working Together on Common Goals by Stina D’Uva

The West Orange and South Lake Chambers are working as strategic partners with myregion.org to bring a group of business, government, and civic leaders in our communities together to engage in candid conversations about local and regional-scale issues that will make Central Florida the best place to live, learn, work, play and raise a family. As part of this initiative, a board of advisors was assembled that represents the northwest area of this region; just one of eight regional boards. The northwest area of the region, comprised of portions of Lake, Orange and Sumter counties, plays a critical role in our future. With a population of over 1,000,000 residents within a 30-mile radius and more than 600,000 jobs created, the power of this Economic Center is limitless.

The Northwest Regional Board of Advisors comprised of 36 members from the communities of Apopka, Clermont, Howey-in-the-Hills, Leesburg, Minneola, Mt. Dora, Oakland, Ocoee, Orlando, Windermere, Winter Garden and Tavares, recently met to discuss two key issues for our future, “Connecting for Global Competitiveness” and “Regional Water Strategy.” Another meeting is set for late summer.
