2010 Chamber Annual Report — The Times-Herald — 3
Letter from the Chairand the President
`When the 2009 year ended, we at the Chamber were con-cerned about the challenges predicted for the year ahead. We had no idea what 2010 might be like, but we were certainit would be no walk in the park.
And it wasn’t. The Chamber faced simi-lar challenges to our members: doingmore with less, trying to meet our goalsfor the year and trying to cut costs whiledoing it. But at the conclusion of 2010,we were gratified to have one of our bestyears on record.
Thanks to a strong Board of Directors, acohesive membership base and a dedi-cated staff, your Chamber finished theyear in the black (no small feat) and hadsome of our most successful specialevents and programs ever. We alsolaunched several new programs for thebenefit of members and, perhaps mostgratifying, we gained and/or retained apretty impressive percentage of members.
Thanks for a truly outstanding year! Wevery much look forward to serving you,our members, and our community withthe new challenges 2011 will bring. Weare confident that our Directors and 2011Chair Vicki Kaiser will be up to the taskahead!

The mission of the Chamber is thebedrock with which we measure ourvalue and success. We are extremelypleased and proud of the achievementsof 2010 but that was then and this is now.Our task at this time is to build on thatand maintain the level of service deliverythat we have reached.
Frankly, most people who live else-where and visit Coweta County feel atwinge of envy for what we have. Weenjoy a distinct sense of place, yet arevery convenient to a major city and amajor airport. We enjoy excellent educa-tional opportunities for our children and itkeeps improving. Even with a down
economy, Coweta County has done quitewell, thanks in large part to our balancebetween residential, commercial/retailand industrial tax revenues. All commu-nities strive for this balance but fewachieve it.
Our theme for this 2010 Annual Reportis “Keeping the Edge of Excellence” and
that is our goal for the coming year. TheChamber had a particularly good yearunder difficult economic circumstances in2010 and succeeded in building an “edgeof excellence” with other counties. Let’stake a look at some of the highlights of2010 within our four major divisions:

Steve Mader, Chamber Chair for2010 and president of SouthtowneMotors, is quick to give credit to oth-ers for the success of his year asChair. He happily applauds theefforts of his Board of Directors, thevolunteers, the support of the mem-bership-at-large of Chamber policiesand, of course, the dedication andhard work of the staff.
When asked what specif icachievements he is most proud of,he quickly notes four.
“Obviously I am thankful for theexcellent year we experienced in2010. But what I am most pleasedwith include the improvement of ourmembership sales, the effort toincrease cooperation and cohesive-ness with our Development
Authority, the establishment of theEconomic Prosperity Council andthe improved information on our website.
“If you distill these areas to theiressence, you will find that they aregenerally to do with the basics ofcommunication, economic prosperityand delivering value to our member-ship resulting in increasing confi-
dence in the Chamber’s ability tofavorably affect businesses success. Those improvements have beenparticularly gratifying to me person-ally.”
Steve Mader will continue to havea leadership role in the Chamber asImmediate Past Chair and memberof the Board for one more year.
Chamber Chair Mader Proud of Accomplishments in 2010
Mader
Just because a new year isbeginning and new officers areinstalled at the Chamber does notmean that everything beginsanew. As an example, the themeof “Think Chamber MembersFirst” continues to resonate and isone of the reasons businessesband together through member-ship in a chamber of commerce.
“Think Chamber Members First”cements the fact that we are allneighbors and fellow memberswho want to support each otherthrough their business dealings.By looking to the businesses ofother Chamber members, it cansurprise some in Coweta on howmuch of the necessary and evenfun things to purchase and do are
here in our community. And bytrying to purchase from otherChamber members, you are help-ing to support their business, theirjob creation and their contribu-tions to our quality of life. Andyou will have the good feeling thatyou are contributing to the contin-uation of a superior school sys-tem, public safety, parks andrecreation, libraries and mainte-nance of our roads and other pub-lic services.
We do indeed have the advan-tage in Coweta of “Keeping theEdge of Excellence” in our com-munity! So always “ThinkChamber Members First” when-ever you shop!

For the third consecutive year,Industry Roundtables continuedto function and created one ofthe most comprehensive andvaluable data resources yet.
The Industry Roundtablesbring together our businessleaders and other experts to dis-cuss innovative ideas designedto keep our business base com-petit ive and capable in anincreasingly tough global mar-ket.
Generally speaking, theacknowledgment that CowetaCounty is a good place to liveand work was a common theme. This is an important distinctionbecause the county is in a “pro-tect and improve” mode ratherthan being concerned with criti-cal and immediate needs to fixbad situations.
Schools, shopping, manufac-turing and healthcare are allfunctioning at a higher level thanin many communities. However, uncertainty about budgets andother business indicators indi-cates a shared concern as well.
This year ’s popular Seriesincluded a SWOT analysis, which is an acronym for“strengths, weaknesses, oppor-tunit ies and threats.” TheRoundtables attracted almost100 participants to share theirthoughts on the SWOT inCoweta County.
Under “Strengths,” it was foundthat education, retail tax rev-enue, healthcare and a greatand affordable quality of lifewere most mentioned.
“Weaknesses” included waterand sewer capacities, skill levelsof employees and effective mar-keting of our community, bothinternally and externally.
“Opportunit ies” had betterencouragement of shoppinglocally and educating citizens of
the importance of the impact ofsales tax revenue to supportlocal services, addressing laborneeds and doing a better job ofinvolving large numbers ofyoung people in the communityand volunteerism as key compo-nents.
“Threats” included a poor workethic of low-skilled employees, the lack of keeping pace withmanufacturing processes thatkeep companies growing hereand failing to “think globally”about world competition.
The Industry Roundtable is a
successful example of one of themajor purposes of an effectiveChamber of Commerce.
The Chamber was pleased tobring these roundtables togetherand will continue to host them asan ongoing benefit to our mem-bers and the community.
Industry Roundtables Create Meaningful Conversations
One of the critical and popularsuccesses of 2010 was the“Inspire and Thrive” series pre-sented by the Chamber to itsmembership. It was intended asan educational piece forChamber members to help themsucceed with their businesses.
There were four overarchingthemes to “Inspire and Thrive:”Creativity & Innovation, Sales &Marketing, Customer Serviceand Leadership. The programsused to deliver results in thesefour areas included:
Monthly “Early Bird Forums”which gave members an oppor-tunity to hear from leading busi-ness people who shared theirpersonal experiences in adjust-ing to the changing world ofbusiness. This valuable informa-tion gave members an easy andinexpensive way to obtain anadvanced body of knowledgeabout some fundamentalbusiness practices!
“Chamber University” was anextension of the knowledgegiven at the Early Bird Forums, more like an advanced degree in
business! Quarterly, ChamberUniversity Workshops delvedmore deeply into key issues andtaught attendees how to growand strengthen their businesses. The faculty represented experi-enced experts in their particularfield and business veterans whoshared their experiences. Theresults were immediate improve-ments to business in specificand meaningful ways.
“Bright Idea Exchanges” tookattendees to yet another levelwith one-hour facilitated round-table discussions. These wereinvaluable opportunities to getwith business experts, ask spe-cific questions about businesschallenges and receive action-able solutions immediately!
“Inspire and Thrive” was one ofthe Chamber’s best opportuni-ties in 2010 to achieve “boots onthe ground” educational experi-ences in real-world businesssuccess practices!

A simple yet effective econom-ic development tool waslaunched in 2009 and built on in2010. Called “Think ChamberMembers First,” it introducedinto our daily thought processesthe importance of doing busi-ness with fellow Chamber mem-bers.
The beautiful thing about“Think Chamber Members First”is that it requires no additionalexpense to you or your busi-ness. By simply looking toChamber members to make nor-mal and necessary purchases, you are contributing to their –and our – success.
One effective tool is prominent-ly displaying your Chambermembership decal in your placeof business. This allows cus-
tomers to identify you as aChamber member and makesthat purchasing decision eveneasier. Additionally, theChamber encourages you to listyour products and services andshop online at the “Hot DealsMember Marketplace” on theChamber’s web site.
All that is required of you is tothink when you make purchas-es. Even if you are just fillingyour gas tank, make sure you doit in Coweta County. That way, alocal business is getting YOURbusiness and you both are con-tributing to a sales tax streamthat will help Coweta with itsPolice, Fire, EMS and other vitalservices that make Coweta thequality place it is to live, workand play.

Chamber Chair Steve Mader, SouthTowne Motors, congratulates Carole Ann Fields,Goodwill Career Center, on her recognition as a volunteer of the month.
I have both the envious task oftaking over the reins of theNewnan-Coweta Chamber for2011 and the somewhat daunt-ing one of successfully continu-ing the outstanding job my pred-ecessor did. It’s a great chal-lenge to have!
Our Chamber recently cele-brated one of our most success-ful years on record, an especial-ly gratifying achievement giventhe economic difficulties we’veall experienced. Not only arehard work, determination andleadership required to have suc-cess with an all-volunteer organ-ization like the Chamber, but theability of a new team to takeover each year and immediatelycontinue the work of the preced-ing year is a challenge.
That’s why the Chamber has amission statement. It gives usthe necessary foundation to stay
focused on delivering value toour members and keep doingthe things that contributed to lastyear’s suc-cesses. It’sour mostbasic roadmap.
I am hum-bled and hon-ored to be the2011ChamberChair. I thank all our membersfor their investment in our com-munity’s continued success aswell as the generous amount oftime that our volunteers give.Let’s keep working together andhave another record-breakingyear in 2011!
