I f there is one thing that I’ve learned in the last year with the Greater Owens- boro Chamber of Commerce, it’s that EVERYONE in Owensboro has an opinion and a great idea about how to keep Owensboro on the move. Well, now it’s time for the community to take advantage of an opportunity to share those. The Chamber, in partnership with the Economic Development Cor- poration, the City of Owensboro and the Daviess County Fiscal Court, is building a Community Priorities list. It is created with business and community input to identify and prioritize capital projects for the region. These priorities are divided into Capital and Transportation categories, and the process is followed in order to be prepared for the budget year of the Ken- tucky Legislature. This effort to come together as a com- munity to identify priorities has been suc- cessful in the past. A perfect example is the current project underway to paint the Glover Cary Bridge, AKA the Blue Bridge. It was on the list for the last few sessions, and our legislators listened, partnered with the State of Indiana, and now our important infrastructure is being updated as a result. The last round of this process produced the following list: Capital Priorities • International Bluegrass Music Center • Advanced Technology Center Phase II @ OCTC and Classroom Building at WKU-O • Daviess County Family Court Judge • Osteopathic Medicine Program • Water Line Extension Program • Western Kentucky Center for the Visual Arts Transportation Priorities • Paint Downtown Bridge • Grimes Avenue Extension • I-64/I-65 Corridor Upgrade to Interstate • I-69 Development/Audubon Spur Upgrades • Thruston-Dermont Road (KY 1456) Improvements CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 WE NEED YOUR INPUT greater owensboro chamber of commerce CHAMBER MATTERS JULY 2013 Vol 12/Issue 7 July 11, 2013 Owensboro Christian Church 7:30 a.m. SPEAKER: Maria Hampton, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Register online at www.Owensboro.com/chamber or call (270) 926-1860 Rooster Booster Breakfast

We at Hospice of Western Kentucky take great pride in our tradition of caring and in what we have accom-plished in our rich 30-year heritage of responding to the needs of our com-munity. We provide nearly 600 fami-lies a year with the very highest qual-ity of end-of-life care. Patients receive care based on our “Choice Care” care model, which focuses on the comfort, dignity and personal choices of our patients and their families. Bereave-ment counseling is provided to both hospice and non-hospice families to help them work through grief and loss.

With all that we have done, one need was yet unsatisfi ed – the need to provide an additional resource for those most in need of comfort and care at the end of life; those with pain and symptoms that cannot be controlled in their home.

Our response to meet that need was

to build a free-standing inpatient unit on 10.8 picturesque acres on Old Hart-ford Road here in Owensboro. Our “Heartford House” will offer a beauti-ful, home-like setting where families will know that their loved ones are being cared for by professional Hos-pice of Western Kentucky staff, focus-ing on the same quality, values and patient-centered goals and care that the patient experienced during home care.

Watch for the grand opening of the “Heartford House” in early fall. Invi-tations will be sent for a special open house for Chamber members. We look forward to seeing you there.

The exhibits were judged by the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Com-merce’s Small Business Committee, which is responsible for the annual buy-local show.

“The event was a huge success,” said Tammy Maglinger, of Custom Audio-Video. “Changing times and locations brought in additional visitors and exposure for our 50 members on display. We are pleased with the results, and even more pleased with the efforts of our members who took advantage of the opportunity to proudly display their products and services.” Maglinger serves as the Chairperson of the Small Business Committee.

In addition to the booth competition, all 50 exhibitors were eligible to win $1,000 in free radio advertising from Town Square Media – WBKR/WOMI. The winner of that prize through a drawing was the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce and Economic Develop-ment Corporation are teaming up again this year to sponsor Emerge Owens-boro, a community leader-ship development program. The program, boasting an alumni base of more than 725 from Emerge Owens-boro and Leadership Owensboro, is the premier local professional development and community learning opportunity.

Classes consist of nine full-day ses-sions and will include topics such as edu-cation, human needs and services, local government issues, crime, arts, tourism, healthcare and more. In addition to the once monthly classes from September through April, the class members will be

required to participate in local civic leadership meetings, and will work in a team to present a solution to an identifi ed community challenge. A trip to Frankfort in February will allow class members to meet state legislators and lobby for Owensboro priorities.

The tuition cost for Emerge Owens-boro is $500. Applications are due by July 31st. Class acceptance will be made by August 12 – there is a limit of 25 in the class. The 2013-2014 schedule begins in September at Rooster Booster and con-clude with graduation in May 2014. To learn more about Emerge Owensboro and download an application at http://emerge.owensboro.com/

The Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Owens-boro Society for Human Resource Manage-ment to develop a six-part series to assist its members with human resources basics.

“Our small business committee built a list of challenges they face, and human resources was the number one issue they wanted help on,” said Amy Jackson, Cham-ber President and CEO. “So, we divided the HR issues they face into six pieces, part-nered with O-SHRM, and built an afford-able, easy to participate in program for our

members.” The six month program will feature a

different topic each month. The sessions will be facilitated by Certifi ed Human Resources professionals. Titled “Whatcha Need to Know Wednesdays,” the series will consist of:

• Best Practices in Hiring and Recruiting – July 10

• Compensation and Benefi ts Packages – August 21

• Employee Handbooks – September 18• Disability and Workplace Safety –

October 16• Challenging Employee Relations –

November 20• Coaching for Performance – December

11All sessions will begin at 11:30 am,

and conclude by 1 pm. All sessions will be held at the Home Builders Association of Owensboro – 3515 Wathens Crossing. The program is open to Chamber mem-bers, and will cost each participant $100 for all six sessions, or $20 per individual session. The fee will cover the cost of

lunch and all materials for. If interested in registering to attend,

call the Chamber at 270-926-1860 or sign-up online at www.owensboro.com/chamber .
