The HURRICANE season really did affect the Caribbean this year. As I remember, last year I was sailing a lot before leaving to SYLT for the PWA world cup and while this year September I haven’t sailed even one day before flying to Sylt. It’s been like eight weeks straight with no windsurfing for me. Just being on Bonaire waiting and hoping that the wind soon arrive but in the end... NADA..

September sure seems too longMost of the time I spent being on Bonaire with no wind was sleeping, watching action movies, staying on the internet browsing the continentseven site to stay up to dated with the out site world of windsurfing and keeping the windsurf moves in my head. Fishing was most of the time i spent... loving it :).

After all that the time has come to get that nine hour KLM flight to Amsterdam, then a fifty minute flight to Hamburg, a twenty minute taxi to the train station, a three hour trainride and here I am in Westerland Sylt for the last PWA event of the year.I just love this cold place. The conditions can be gnarly but it’s still survivable.

At this moment while I am writing this report, I have just finished second in the freestyle single elimination. We still have to finish the double elimination so iif I can keep my second position or win the double I can keep my second position for the year. It will also depend on how the other guys do as well, so it’s a bit scary.

Uhmm I am focused and I am ready to have a podium finish in the event.

Check out my Sylt Report on the next pages.

Aloha, Taty Frans

Taty Frans2010 PWA Freestyle Vice World Champion World Cup Sylt report

What a long 10 day event this has been. This year we had very difficult wind conditions. The waiting game was very much in the pocket. But that gave me enough time to rest and gave me the strength to recover from the long flight we had from Bonaire to Westerland Sylt.

The event started on the 24th with the usual open ceremony with a hugh crowds looking at all the competitors from all different countries. It’s always amazing to be in SYLT because this is the biggest event from the whole PWA tour. The crowds come and the beach is always packed with people watching the action.

I came to Sylt in 6th position but knowing that I can still have a great Overall freestyle ranking if I stay focused and make sure that Steven, Kiri, Tonky finish behind me. But I hadn’t sailed for eight weeks after Fuerteventura it was kind of weird to be in this cold weather in Sylt and compete directly in the heats. Even though I know I won last year it was different because last year I sailed for eight weeks straight and I came to Sylt fully prepared. This year in Bonaire the conditions were different.

On the first day of the event there was not sufficient wind and so I took this day to build energy and to stay focused and make myself relax in my mind so that I can perform at my best. Looking back at some freestyle video which Bogo sent to me some weeks back was a great thing to keep me in the groove.

On the second day pretty late in the afternoon the wind remained gusty and not so good to do a start of freestyle, so I went out at 3 O’clock and sailed for three hours, It was very gusty but every now and then you can find some wind to train some moves. It was great to sail again and to be able to still have the moves working.

Maui MonthlyOur Experience, Your Reward .7

Page 8: Maui Monthly no.65. September 2010

The third day of the event the wind was gusty and not from a good direction but it was enough to start the freestyle heats. Head Judge Duncan had the heats running for 12 minuuts with 6 moves and the three best counts from both sides. It was enough to complete a single for this day and with this kind of wind direction and the forecast wasn’t really looking so promising. It wasn’t 100% sure that we can have a double elimination finished before the end of the Event. So a mistake wasn’t a good thing. I put that out of my mind and built positive thoughts in my mind. I gained confidence in myself so this was a great feeling to have. :) I was so happy and greatful for this feeling

1st Heat: Taty - Yarden MeirMy Loco 5.2 and Starboard 98 was the best choice for this wind. My first heat was with Yarden Meir from Israel. As we had 12 minute heats I took this heat with ease using my time to really do the best big moves and as the time goes in between do some combination moves. I knew I won the heat because it’s just the feeling I had that I was better.

2nd Heat: Taty - Maarten van OchtenWith each I was advancing thru the competitors were getting stronger. Maarten van Octhen really did show a great heat against me but I really had to play it safe and didn’t really go big as in the previous heats as I had to save some energy for the heats that are coming. I did mostly combination moves like: double flaka, puneta diablo, shaka flaka, switch chacho and so on. I won but Maarten told me it was a 1 point different.

Page 10: Maui Monthly no.65. September 2010

3rd heat: Taty - Andy ChambersI remember before we went in this heat I remember Andy telling me I think I am going on my 5.7. I said to him I will keep my 5.2 loco.. because this sail is very good in medium gusty conditions.. and when the green flag went up the wind was really strong I was powered up with my 5.2 and I started the heat with a high SHAKA then straight into a CULO after that I was just pulling KONO, BURNER, DOUBLE FLAKA move after move because I just need to win the heat so that I can at least have a shot to be in the semi final and get a good podium finish for Sylt. I felt very relaxed in and after this heat and I was feeling warm. Winning this heat was a great feeling.

4th heat SEMI FINAL: Taty - KiriThis was a hard heat because If I beat Kiri then I know that I can sure have a podium finish here Sylt and maybe also a better Overall ranking. Nothing was scaring me and I was only focusing to go out on the water and sail heat after heat and to make sure that every move I do was done with style and speed. Started off with a great SHAKA FLAKA with the help of a wave then again straight into a CULO. back to the beach I did PUNCH,DOUBLE SPOCK, back out switch chacho, HIGH KONO I was just nailing every move I had in my head and plan to do in this heat.. Yes I did crash like two times but i had good feeling I won because I knew I had great and BIG moves. After the heat ended I went to the judges tower for the scoring and DUNCAN looked at me and raise his tumb up I was like YES WOOWWWWWWWW…………… :) BIG SMILE. because now for sure I know I have a podium finish

Back to the other heat Gollito beat Steven. So I was like... okay... cool this can be great because now I know I can get a top three in the overall for the year.

Winners Final Heat: Taty - GollitoI started with some great moves using the tricky gusty wind to plane and do couple of the air moves but then I went to much on the inside while Gollito stick to the outside and started pull off the Burner, Culo and a sick Punch. I think that the last three moves he did really gained him enough points to have a win.

Loser final: Kiri - Steven.I didn’t really look at this heat all the way to the final but I saw Steven pulling sick air moves and while Kiri was just sliding around. It was kind of close between Steven and Kiri.

As we got on the stage and the announcer said:

1st place goes to Gollito2nd for Taty Frans3rd place goes to Steven4th to Kiri

All that I can say you can’t not have a better final with the best four guys fighting it for the top spot. All that I can say at this moment is I am very happy to have finished 2nd in Sylt and with having this results with Kiri in 4th and Steven in 3rd gave me the chance to climb from the 6th position to being the VICE WORLD CHAMPION for 2010. It’s just a great feeling to be back on top after 3 years of having really bad results just when I thought I have lost it all I have found the COURAGE, the POWER, and POSITIVE MIND to work and be back on top. What a great feeling and just a great wonderful overall Result.

I want to thank: all my Sponsors: MauiSails, Starboard, Maui Ultra Fins, Bonaire WIndsurf Place, Mystic clothing for their support.

NIGHT SUPER SESSION

Was the best but hard to get going with the Jetski as it was dark wavy and also the wind was blowing and this is not so good to do jetski sailing but what do you do when you have thousands people at the beach at night just ancious to watch the best freestylers putting action on the water. So we did it for the crowds and I think it’s the best thing they have seen so far.. People where screaming and they where just loving it.. Gollito came in first with a nice Burner. Ricardo came in 2nd with a great Funnel one handed. I came in 3rd with an Airfunnel into flaka but didn’t really quite pull the landing so well in the end but still I got the third place.

For sure this tow jetski windsurfing will be something great for places with no wind and still a great attractive for the crowds.

WellThat’s it for now.Thank you for readingTaty Frans NB-9

It was the start of autumn in Europe when heading up to Denmark for the KIA PWA ’Cold Hawaii’ world cup early September. Before leaving I got some new commercial racks for the car, so everything was racked up and ready to go with all Wave and Slalom gear nicely organized. Always good to rock up to a contest via the road and not get any surprises at check-in...

The first stop after leaving Holland was in Hamburg for a nights rest, the next morning upon opening the van I heard miauwing and it seemed that a cat had joined us all the way up from NL! Surprise, it must have jumped in the car while loading the van; while we passed an ’animal - dog and cat hotel’ on the way (I know, of all places!) we stopped by there and found a nice new owner for the animal that appeared to her being only about 6 months old. Denmark was quite the place to be in September. First we stopped in Hvide Sande for the Waterz, next to Wakeboard and SUP its a new Kite and Windsurfing event and Marathon long distance race. Loads of enthusiastic people attended this new event, which made the race real fun.

Next stop Klitmoller 150 km up the road where we scored some awesome conditions, every day it was howling and the swell built creating the best conditions I have seen in a while in this part of the world. Above all the contest was really well organized and we had a comfortable new house to stay in with internet, jacuzi and even a sauna. At night the wetsuits could dry there quite well for taking the next morning! The live streaming made it possible for the world to watch some of the action from up close.

MauiSails GhostXT proved to be the best sail in the lighter wind, on the 6.1 and 5.7 I could plane as early as the light weights. But using a 4.5 Legend was no exception, and it got very windy. Finally I missed some points against Victor Fernandez to finish in 13th, but still landing a clean double in the supersession. As I focus more on Slalom these days its still good fun being a competitor in waves and still have chances to spritz!

After Klittmoller we descended on Sylt for the 2010 Weltmeisterschaften. It was good to finally get my act together and get some amazing starts as well as perfectly tuning my rigs. Mainly I used the TR-6 8.4 and 7.0 and I found myself using the bigger one whenever possible to try and beat the worlds best racers, finishing 7th overall and a 2nd place in one of the rounds. The range of the 8.4 is good and even sometimes when Bjorn and Antoine were on 7.8 I was using the 8.4, stacked.

Busy month for PeterEvents in Denmark and Germany

All in all we did 7 races in mainly side offshore winds, the freestylers got a single elimination in and it was a pleasure to see Taty sailing extremely well on the Loco to claim a 2nd place. Unfortunately no Wave sailing competition meaning that we are not going to get our discard after Cape Verde.

The live streaming at the PWA events seems to be working really well and it got a lot of positive remarks of people from all over the world who can now follow the races.

It looks promising that the action in Cape Verde can now be watched from the comfort of your couch, undoubtedly making for an unbelievable finale of the 2010 PWA season.

Lots of good things happening, I hope you are enjoying the sailing.

September went fast!I finished to set up the school at the club where i have the shop. It was a lot of fun, painting, building racks for the boards, and organizing everything.. We had a very big group of kids the first weekend we opened and it was just great to see that the effort paid off. Spring is starting in Argentina so the school will go off very soon.

After that i took off to Sylt, for the last PWA of the year. Sylt is well known for being cold and for long waiting days. We finally got some wind on the last days of the event so we manage to do 7 rounds. The wind was offshore most of the time so we had to sail out to sea and not many chances to come back to the beach to change stuff. It was nice to ride the 8.4 and the 7.0 in that gusty winds.

Now i am coming back home and getting ready to hit the last formula event of the year in Fortaleza.

The waves are back on MauiAs soon as we got into the 2nd half of September, solid north swells started showing up one after another through the rest of the month. What a great feeling to get on some solid ground swell after a long summer making the most out of small, choppy wind waves. Some of the days came along with some light winds but I was well prepared with my Ghost-xt 5.3 and floaty Quatro twin. One day, I was actually planning on surfing Hookipa because there wasn’t any wind forecast but as I was pulling out my surfboard I noticed a hint of texture developing on the wave faces, but no real whitecaps. Curious to find out the low wind limit of my gear, I put the surfboard back in the car and rigged up instead. I ended up having a great slog-wave sailing session and got plenty of glassy waves in some seriously light wind.

At the loft, we’ve been busy working through the TR-7 sizes one at a time. The proto types have been turning out quite nicely and after some further re-cuts, to tune the luff curve, we are seeing some very nice results. We’re all excited about the progress in the race sails this year and the next month will be full of intense testing as most of our race team will be here to provide feedback on the new weapons.

Early fall in Gorge.

After a spectacular August, the wind settled down for what felt like an early fall in the Gorge. Quickly I found myself back in my fullsuit, watching the radar maps for clearings in the clouds for blasting westerlies. That said, we still did manage to get some great days, just few and far between. Like the birds, I left at the end of the month and headed south for the Tabou Wavecamp at Solo Sports Adventure Holdiays (solosports.net) at San Carlos, Baja.

Answering our landlocked prayers, San Carlos delivered from the instant we got over the pass and saw the ocean! Consistent overhead-logo high sets with 4.7 winds have been on lock since we’ve arrived.

The camp is packed up at Solo Sports (www.solosports.net), with many guests participating in the clinic. Driving the 1,700 miles from Worldwinds Corpus Christi, Olivie made it out for the week to score some epic conditions on his new Globals and Legends!

Also Pete Dekay, Derek Rijff, and the rest of the Windsport test crew are down here testing the latest and greatest 2011 waveboards and SUPs! With another swell lined up to hit later this week, it feels truly great to be back in San Carlos!

September was a good month for milestones and a great month for waves on the North shore. Art’s been getting time on the various Ghost sizes and has been totally spoiled by the zoomy performance. I’ve spent lots of hours watching and the speed and pointing ability is completely obvious. It makes me wonder if there’s something important to how wave sails should perform that we are missing. Something that makes sails that can’t get up and go somehow better on the wave. I know our own philosophy demands that efficient outlines and proper internal tension deliver speed and upwind ability without compromising the light feel on the wave. This month of watching a lot of sessions makes me scratch my head.

TR-7 is gaining solidity in graphic, construction, materials, and shape development. This will be a totally new sail, a break in the evolution, emphasis solely on exceeding current TR-6 performance. Lower aspect ratio, relatively shorter booms, and more mid-leech tension are helping us to gain stability in the foil and move the power range into less wind. Tights packs of racers, jammed mark roundings, and gusty conditions require these attributes. The challenge is to marry those things with a soft feel and easy jibing.

The challenge of materials is always interesting here on Maui. Regardless of modern communication, there is a long time factor to have samples etc., and be ready in place

What a year, interesting month

Maui Monthly no.65. September ’10.32

Page 33: Maui Monthly no.65. September 2010

for the cycle. The world of dreaming things and having them for real is not the same size. I’m sure this is a greater challenge than making faster sails.

It was one year ago that Cornelia entered my world. The nasty haulout, ripping out most of the interior and systems, rebuilding and repairing as necessary, re-rigging, and lots of epoxy and fiberglass work, consumed afternoons and nights until she was safe in slip 61 in Lahaina. She is now at the bare level for safe interisland sailing, all the basic sailing gear renewed and strong, required nav lights, and no deck leaks. The kerosene stove works like a champ and the galley is fully stocked. I have a good idea how to carry windsurf gear on board, so adventures will be in store. And there is a standard three-step sewing machine set up in the main cabin for quick repairs.

A few days before my mom, Cornelia, was to arrive here so we could go sailing, I finished the main cabin berth and ’library’. Everything caught up with me I think... the epoxy, LPU, diesel, nasty stuff, and I spent a weekend flat out, cold sweating. Coming out the other side of that charged me up and October is looking good to be an exciting month of getting all the ducks in a row for racing. Peter will be here soon to test and develop, I’m sure there will be more big waves, and the background theme will be how to do it all again before October of 2011, since the PWA sail registration has now been moved forward. This will certainly be changing the timing and style of our development, and it should create a production and delivery scenario that will suit the whole world better. We can make the summer in NZ and Australia, and have sails in stock for early spring in the Northern Hemisphere without having to use expensive freight methods. All in all I see it as an interesting change.

A good month for testing sails and masts. We had really good conditions here on Maui for the month of September so it gave us a chance to continue work on the race sails for 2011 and play around with some masts.

We had some good early swells that got everyone excited on Maui, with Hookipa not crowded at all. It’s always amazing how many people are at the beach all of a sudden

when the swell comes up, people start arriving from the mainland and locals are all out there, you can’t beat the life style in Maui especially in the Fall.

We had the arrival of our 2011 wave sails on Maui, so it’s time to get out on them and look for ways to improve what is already a very balanced and consistent range.
