Dave Mann is singer/songwriter from Margaret River, WA. He has been writing, recording and performing his songs for the past 10 years all around Australia and Internationally. With 6 cd's under his belt, Dave has forged a loyal and broad fan base in the folk/roots music scene.

When did you start getting musical Dave, is it in your blood?Yeah I have to say i'm one of the lucky ones that has music in my blood. My Grandmother was a great singer and organist and Grandfather was a pianist. Both my parents are musical. My Dad is a great songwriter… so yeah i had a good start. I started playing the guitar at around age 10 although Mum tells me i was making up songs since I could talk.

Who would you say are your Strongest influences?I'd have to say my parents are up there as influences. I'm also a big fan of Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Eric Bibb, Jeff Lang, Daniel Lanois and the list could go on and on… I love loads of different types of music. I find there's something to offer in everything i listen too. Except for most of the crap thats on the radio these days.

What inspires you to write songs Dave?I get asked this question quite a bit but it doesn't really come with a very exciting answer… for me, i need to be moved emotionally to write a song about something. the subject needs to get my blood boiling, or jerk a tear or two, or lift me up to ecstatic highs… And there are so many things that can happen in day to day life that can evoke these feelings… i think it's more about allowing yourself to be moved by something or simply being open to it in order to get a song out or any art for that matter.

Where is your favourite gig venue?I love the Fly By Night Club, in Fremantle. I've never had a bad gig there and it always sounds great. You get so well looked after there either as a punter or a performer. Just a great venue - run by music loving people.

All time favourite song Dave? This question has me stuck. I can't nail it down to one. From Little Things Big Things Grow, How Too Make Gravy, Light Of Day. Na can't do it.

What do you think of the latest music being played commercially Dave?

To be honest, the majority of it doesn't really pulls my heart strings. Just nothingness. Superficial. There are some exceptions but the majority is throw away disposable music. The best music lies just under the surface. There are some absolutely brilliant songwriters and musicians just tucked away from the main stream. Thats where the gold is. It's like good food. You can drive down the main street and all you see is Mc'donalds, Hungry Jacks and a million other fast food places. But just tucked around the corner you'll a find a little gem. Someone who cooks with passion and love - because they just want to. Not for the money. It feels good to eat that food because it's been cooked with love and soul. Music is the same. Most of the stuff I hear. And i say most but not all, is "fast food music".Favourite instrument and why?Singing. Once upon a time I would have said guitar but i'm really just loving singing and good gutsy singers that can really sing.

Do you think Margaret River has a good music scene?I think for the size of the town here i think it's quite a healthy scene. The Settlers Tav have been flying the original music flag for years and they do it so well. But i think maybe another few venues would be nice. The same could be said Australia wide to be honest. Need more small venues. There are too many regulations now that make it uneconomical to run a small bar or club which is really troubling the original music

scene at a grass roots level. The "up and comings" need somewhere to play and build their fan bases. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find venues to play at around the country unless you can fill an auditorium. Anyway. rant. Margs has a good scene.

Greatest act of all time? The act of kindness.

Whats next for you?My wife and I are expecting a baby soon. That's whats next for me! That'll keep us busy for a little while… But I also have a new album that I'm working on. It's a full band live studio album… Where we just played it all live in the studio with very minimal overdubs… and really exciting because i haven't done an album like that for ages! and it's sounds really great and raw and real. I can't wait to launch it!

Thankyou kindly Dave!

“I have been taking photographs professionally for over 20 years. In that time I have had to evolve with every advance in technology and creative technique. It is such an exciting and challenging time to be in the industry. The advent of digital has revolutionised photography as an art form. It has also bought photography and image manipulation to the masses. Every second person now takes photographs and many are trying their hand at creating a living from their hobbies...”

John has always tried to work 'outside the square' of commercial and contemporary jewellery design: "After 30 years of days spent making and nights spent designing, there are now almost too many avenues of my work to explore...I love silver and I love gold, and there's never enough time to give both the attention they deserve. My toolmaking and patternmaking is quite sophisticated now, and I always amaze myself with where that's all going, but the hand engraving and forging techniques demand attention too, as does setting and working with diamonds and coloured stones."

On The Grape VineM a r g a r e t R i v e r V i n t a g e R e p o r t 2 0 1 2

Most will know that Margaret River is a very young area in world terms for grape growing and fine wine production, 1967 with the first vintage in only 1972. Like most we have experienced nature’s fancies and whims but the period since 2007 has been unprecedented in providing a period of warm to dry weather during summer leading up to vintage something that all varietals prefer but especially Cabernet Sauvignon and 2012 will be its year in

MargaretRiver. The warmer weather conditions brought forward vintage by between 2 to 3 weeks ahead of the regional average for both whites and reds. This and an abundant blossoming of Marri leading into and during vintage kept birds well at bay. Disease pressure was also minimal because of seasonal consistency with little rainfall recorded between January until the end of March.

Consensus amongst winemakers is a difficult thing to achieve but all agreeMargaretRiver’s 2012 vintage is going to be something truly special; Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends are rated as outstanding with Cabernet Sauvignon a step further ahead and universally declared as show stopping brilliant.

Chardonnay is quite intense and full of flavour with a predominate citrus line along with some minerality but with weight, length and complexity. It shows a balanced acid backbone with soft and fine phenolics and is true to the adage that fine wines should be balanced and not dominated by any single characteristic.

Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends show greater weight and lift in 2012 with fresh vibrant guava, gooseberry and lychee flavours present.

Reds, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon has shown intense colour, with concentrated red currant flavours mixed with mulberry and blueberry aromas. This was

Page 23: Margaret River Famous Down Under - Issue 1

brought about by the extended period of warm weather and cool nights that have balanced off natural fruit flavour nicely with seed ripeness. Berrysize in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot was a touch smaller that usual along with the

appearance of a thicker grape skin this year.

On the palate Cabernet Sauvignon has lovely fine extended tannins and fresh crunchy red fruit, long length with concentration, elegance and generosity.

Not to be missed is the Shiraz this year that is also showing lots of aroma, fruit intensity, sensational colours and surprisingly soft tannins.

Vintage will be very strong across all varietals but should be welcomed by those who love Cabernet Sauvignon; it visited Margaret River in style during 2012 and left a calling card that will be long remembered.

How To Get Your Kids To Enjoy Gardening

GARDENING WITH KIDS

Most kids love to play in the dirt, so gardening has a built in advantage as a fun activity. To get young children enthused about having their own special garden, start small.

Get them excited by letting them pick out what they will grow. A walk down the seed packet isle should tempt them with the pictures. Point them toward quick growing plants like, radishes, peas and cucumbers. Smaller children do best with large seeds like corn, beans, peas and sunflowers.

Difficulty: EasyTime Required: All Summer, Hopefully Longer

Here's How:

Choosing the Plants: More than likely kids will choose vegetable they like to eat. Remember that the garden space is small, so stick to a handful of varieties. Include some flowers as well. Bright flowers at child height, like zinnias and cosmos, will keep them fascinated and also make good choices for cutting and bringing indoors. You can’t miss with sunflowers. Every kid is amazed at anything that grows 8 feet tall.

Starting Seeds: Let the kids help with starting the seeds. Some of the seeds may be to small for little fingers, but they can always be the helper who covers them with soil.

Garden Journals: To keep the kids interested until the plants come up, have them start a garden journal. They can draw a picture of what they think the plants will look like and make notes about when they planted the seeds and when they first saw a sprout pushing up. The journal can continue throughout the garden season with more notes and pictures of the garden and even the bugs that visit.

Make sure they write down what they enjoy best about gardening.

Put the Garden Where They Will See It: To start the garden, pick a sunny spot in the backyard near where the kids play or often walk by. The more they see their garden, the more they'll notice changes. Keep the space to about no more than about 4' x 4'. If you don't have a yard, you can still have a garden in pots on a patio or inside on a windowsill, maybe even in their room.

Playing with Dirt: Remember that kids love playing with dirt. Let them help you prepare the soil, even if all they are capable of is stomping on the clumps. Kid sized tools will make them feel even more a part of the project.

Identify the Garden as Theirs: Mark each plant with the tag or seed packet it came with, so that the kids can see what the flowers or vegetables will look like. Also make a sign for the whole garden with the child’s name, so everyone can see that it's their garden.

Playing with Water: Playing with water is right up there with playing with dirt. Give the kids a small watering can to use on their garden. Show them how to gently let the water go right to the roots of the plants. Hoses are just asking for trouble. They are simply too heavy for little hands to control.

Page 26: Margaret River Famous Down Under - Issue 1

Include the Whole Environment: You can also teach them about mulching and composting, by letting them spread grass clipping and shredded leaves around their plants to conserve water and help feed the plants. Don't forget to point out any interesting insects.

Patience Isn't the Only Virtue: Kids don't have a lot of patience and they may try to pull up their radishes just to see if they are ready. Let them keep tabs this way. They can write it in their garden journal to see their progress. You can also let them sample the small radishes, to see if there is a taste difference from the big ones.

Let Them Make Their Own Mistakes: Sometimes adults don't have a lot of patience either. Let the kids have control of their garden. If it's messy, it's their mess. Let them enjoy it and take pride in their own piece of land.

A famous and unique experience in the South West Region

Page 35: Margaret River Famous Down Under - Issue 1

Welcome to what is becoming known as one of Australia’s most exciting breweries located in the heart of the iconic

Margaret River region. Having recently upgraded its brewing facility and venue, beer lovers can expect great things

from this proudly Australian owned and run company.

The Margaret River region is synonymous with wine. But a unique brewer is offering an alternative to those

foundering in the great wine lake of the southwest. Colonial is a family oriented brewery  that is nestled

amongst vineyards, quaint farms and bordering the Bramley National Park, the Colonial Brewing Company is

changing expectations of both the region and of Australian beer.

Colonial beer represents the triumph of substance over style. This

craft brewery is founded on the belief that beer making is a

cornerstone of civilisation.

Each brew is created according to the company’s motto, festina

lente – hasten slowly. While the beers are brewed with skill and

innovation, it is the care and passion of the brewer that elevate

the Colonial brewing process from a science to an art form.

“At Colonial you’ll never find any half measures,” said head

brewer Mal Secourable. “Handmade in small batches under

stringently controlled conditions, we are able to consistently

produce beers of great distinction, proudly paying homage to

the ancient and learned craft of the Brewers Guild.” It is this

approach that has seen Colonial named Champion Australian

Small Brewery in 2006, 2007 as well as Champion International

Small Brewery in 2007. Colonial’s signature beer, Kolsch, has

drawn the attention of beer show judges with its clean,

refreshing style and flavours of lemon sorbet , passion fruit and

herb. In 2009 Kolsch won the Premier’s Trophy Best for WA Beer,

the Barrett Burston Trophy for the Best Draught Ale, and the

Cryer Malt Trophy for the Best Draught Ale.

Their Best in Show for the Kolsch represents a world-class

example of a top-class beer,” said the 2009 chief judge Brendan

Varis. “WA beer drinkers should be grateful and happy to have

beers of this quality available to them locally. It’s great to know we

have this kind of beer in our own backyard.”

No one can argue that Margaret River and surfing go hand in hand.

Home to some of the largest pro surfing waves outside of Hawaii, it is a draw card for surfers worldwide. Our pristine coastline and clean waters, not to mention over 75 top class surf breaks makes us a little spoiled. So, its not surprising that Margaret River is full of surfing talent. Winter is here and some of the biggest swells are on their way. The film crew for the latest surf film just lost all their film gear when a jet ski was bold over.

Congratulations Jerome Forrest on winning the prestigious WA Open Mens State Titles and becoming State Champion and best of luck in the Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series.

Congratulations also to Shaun Green winning the last comp in Yallingup, surfing on a Sunova.

Over to you now to get out there and enjoy all that the best Margaret River Winter Surf has. Now that all the holiday crowds have gone you will be sure to have the waves to yourself.

Local Real EstateAnother Cut To The RBA Interest Rates … What Does it Mean in the Property Market?

The latest 25 basis points drop in RBA interest rates gives us an insight into what the RBA is thinking about the economy – namely its lack of confidence! JMW Real Estate Principal, Joe White, gives us his view.

As far as the property market in WA is concerned, there are several inescapable realities that will most likely lead to a recovery earlier than elsewhere.  However, there is still likely to be pain involved, regrettably borne by those who can least afford it.Here’s an overview of how I see it:

• The Western Australian Economy is one of the strongest in the world, and we are experiencing population growth.

• Data collected by me shows property prices have dropped some 30% since the peak of the boom in Oct/Nov/Dec 2007.

• There has been very little investment in housing supply since the peak of the boom, and some areas of the market are already massively overheated – this is the only time in my living memory that luxurious residential properties show anything like a reasonable return on investment as far as rents are concerned.

•The land supply crisis of 2000 to 2007 highlighted some serious flaws in our approvals system, and these flaws have not yet been rectified.  So when the market does try to react, it will be stopped from doing so by a flawed planning process – already major Perth builders are commenting that the approvals process is holding up construction and, compared to the approvals process for subdivisions, the process for building a house is simple!

•Locally, the Catholic primary school is commencing a second stream and the state primary school is full – the population is obviously growing.

• Dunsborough’s major supplier of affordable land has been releasing blocks at affordable prices all through the slump, and this has helped to keep affordability levels in check – but what of the future when Dunsborough Lakes and the likes are fully released?

Page 41: Margaret River Famous Down Under - Issue 1

In short, on the horizon sits the mounting warnings of another land supply crisis and a property market boom to be fuelled by another generation of panic buyers not burnt in 2007 – 2012.  This, in turn, will lead to another bust that will, once again, lead to another land supply slump.

The damage of this “Boom/Bust” economy is palpable to all who read the signs, yet we seem incapable of formulating policies to allow the market to react to the demand.

In effect, we have ‘bureaucrat-ised’ the competition out of the market by taking the smaller suppliers out of the system (mums and dads with five acres on the edge of town wishing to subdivide).

We now have an ‘Oligopolistic Land Supply Paradigm’, which reacts and behaves like all Oligopolies – typified by non-price competition and reliance on gimmicks not unlike the auto industry.

Competition in the land market will soon be reduced to that of size of lakes, prettiness of streetscape, landscaping allowances, access to huge shopping centres etc, but not to the price for basic and affordable housing lots.

With the best will in the world, our lords and masters have removed the essential ingredient out of the economic growth model – this being ‘competition’ in land supply. We will therefore be forced to repeat the lessons of 2000 to 2007, and the people at the cheaper end of the housing market will feel it the most.  The more of a burden we place on

them for paying for these development ‘frills’, the more unaffordable our housing will become.

All this stuff has to be paid for and currently this is by way of a 25 year loan held by none other than first homebuyers, or those who can afford it least.  Owners of the 5 acre blocks on the outskirts of town aren’t at the negotiating table, as it’s all got too hard to navigate the system.

How the hell did we end up here?

Over regulation – that’s why and, as an established businessman, I love overregulation because it keeps newcomers out of the market!  Not great for the economy though.

Why Dunsborough Women Just Love Organic Gardens

It started with a curious sighting of cucumbers hanging in my lemon tree. That’s what prompted Leonie Maslin and the Dunsborough Ladies Gardening Club to come for a visit to my garden.

It had been a while since I got my hands dirty, however, inspired by the visit request and armed with the formal plant names provided by my qualified horticulturist son, I prepared to get reconnected to the earth. - Read more

Home Decoration SouthWest Style … A Slight Case of the Blues…

Now don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the colour blue, but not when most of the fit-out of a house is dominated by it!

Having moved into my new (yet old) house a couple of months ago, I came home from work and thought to myself – that is it! The blue just has to go from my bathroom. And so the shower cubicle home decoration journey began. - Read more

Tips for People Selling Property in Australia

How many buyers buy the first property they see? I can tell you it rarely happens, as most buyers stay on agent’s books or databases for weeks, months or even years.

By the time the buyers are ready to make a commitment, they know exactly what their money will buy, and that’s why people selling property in Australia need to do the same amount of homework when deciding what price to market their property at in the first place.. - Read more

Apart from a 30-year career in real estate and hundreds of homes sold under my negotiation, I happen to be a property buyer myself and know that a little effort in doing property exterior facelift could make all the difference.
