Mentoring ProgramAs part of the Shire's adopted strategic plan concerning business excellence and stronger communities, the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River has recently offered its support to the Margaret River Senior High School mentoring program.

Authorised staff of the Shire will be allowed to take time away from their work to mentor a student at the High School, provided the operations of the Shire are not adversely affected. Approved members of staff will now be able to come to the school for 1 hour/week to offer their time, experience, care and skills to a student. Although there are other employers in Western Australia which offer support to mentoring in schools in their communities, it is not at all common. The High School is extremely grateful to the Shire. Their participation will improve the mentoring program by:-

• Increasing the range of skills and experiences being shared with students;• Allowing better matching of mentors to students based on the student’s interests and needs; • Enabling a broader cross-section of the community to become mentors, in particular full-time workers; • Improving the sustainability of the program; and• Promoting mentoring itself.

Already six Shire employees have applied to the Shire and The School Volunteer Program, and one has started meeting with a student!

Records Tumble in School Engineering Challenge

The Margaret River Senior High Spaghetti Bridge competition completed its 13th year this week (and possibly last, due to curriculum changes) with records tumbling in spectacular style.

Leela Dilkes-Hoffman elegant pyramidal bridge which used symmetry to balance forces and neatly transfer weight to the supports without large amounts of shear stress smashed all records for spanning 50cm by holding a massive 38.0kgs (deforming and nearly breaking the bucket holding the weights). This was over double the school record and meant the bridge was holding over 238 times its own weight. Leela’s huge effort and the fact that the Physics class of 2009 have produced, on average, the best bridges ever shows that novel solutions are out there in all sorts of fi elds and that the youth of Margaret River will be out there amongst the best making our world a better place.

Other commendable bridges this year include Frances Hewitt’s 8.7 kg bridge which held 85 times its own mass, Joella Endere’s bridge which held 11.7 kg and Jarrod William’s effort which held 9.2 kg.

The Physics curriculum changes may mean the end of the Spaghetti Bridge competition in its current form but Liam Smith the school’s Physics teacher is open to suggestions for other challenges to replace it, perhaps catapults to study projectile motion in 2009?

Year 10 Mountain Bike In-Class Time Trial Series

Over the course of Term Two, the Year 10 Mountain Bike Class conducted an in-class time trial series. The class took to the trails once, sometimes twice a week. The trails tackled included ‘Old Kate’, ‘Boost’, ‘Pines’ and ‘Northshore’ to name a few.

Congratulations to all those who took part and despite not in the running for the major prizes continued to try to bring individual times down. A points system was in place for the 15 riders for each trial – 15 points for fi rst place, 14 for second and so on down to 1 point for 15th place.

In 5th place was Andrew Martin on 157 points, 4th place Tom Jackson on 160 points and 3rd place Liam Bourke on 190 points.

The top two places was a tight tussle between Luke Thom and Brennan Abbs, often completing trails with identical times. Luke came through to take fi rst place on 248 points and as such wins a $100 voucher with Brennan in second place, 231 points, taking the $50 voucher to be spent at the local bike shop. Congratulations. Luke and Brennan are pictured below.

Being able to see how long whale sharks are was a great hands-on experience for the students. All students had a great time experiencing a teaching role and making new friends. All students are looking forward to visiting their new friends later in the term.

Margaret River Senior High School has also adopted its own whale shark through the Ecocean adoption program. A-466, a young male whale shark sighted several times over the last few years at Ningaloo Marine Park was adopted. We are currently running a naming competition to rename our whale shark who has a large chunk missing from his back and dorsal fi n after being hit by a boat.

Year 9 visit to Cowaramup Primary School

The biggest fi sh in the ocean recently brought some Margaret River students together. Earlier in the term Miss Hutchings Year 9 English class visited the Year 2 class at Cowaramup Primary School to teach them about Whale Sharks. After participating in the Woodside TeachLive Program earlier in the year, the Year 9 students were keen to pass on their knowledge to the younger students.

The Year 9 students were partnered with Year 2 students and completed several teaching activities, the most popular being the drawing of a life size whale shark. The Year 2 class learned about the habitat of whale sharks, their diet and their enormous size.

Semester 1 Year 9 Roping/Caving Excursion

On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th June the two semester 1 Year 9 Roping classes participated in an exciting day of abseiling and caving at Calgardup Cave.

Each class was divided into three groups and rotated between activities through the course of the day. These activities consisted of exploring the cave itself, abseiling into the Calgardup Pipe beginning their abseil above ground and fi nishing in a large chamber below ground and thirdly, scrambling through the restricted access Window Extension section of the cave.

Both groups conducted themselves in an exemplary manner, looking out for each others safety and overcoming fears such as heights and confi ned spaces. Special thanks go to Grant Bunce, the secondary instructor on site, and Andy Wyatt for supervising the bottom of the abseil and the general behaviour inside the cave. Well done to all concerned.

Senior School Engagement Program in the Northern Goldfi elds

Twelve senior students in Year 11 and 12 have recently returned from a fl ying visit to the Northern Goldfi elds. Accompanied by teachers, Ian Thwaites and Kerry Hastie, the students travelled by bus to Perth and then fl ew to Murrin Murrin mine along with the fl y-in fl y-out employees of Minara Resources Limited.

Murrin Murrin is an active nickel mine situated between Laverton and Leonora. As guests of the company, the fortunate group explored the facilities, sampling the catering and recreational aspects of the accommodation village. They also toured the mine site and were involved in setting up and completing the day’s blast.

A visit to the tiny but dynamic Mt Margaret Remote Community School was another highlight for the students and teachers. Each MRSHS student prepared and presented a brief talk about their lives in Margaret River and the students at Mt Margaret reciprocated this with their own story maps.

Every aspect of their journey reinforced many of the understandings the students are working on at school, including safety awareness and procedures, employability skills and communication. Despite the importance of these, the trip will be mainly remembered for Brendan’s kick of a football the length of the basketball court and through the hoop, Nathan’s amazing and colourful dessert mountain, the early morning start which meant we saw the magnifi cent sunrise, Will’s winning multi marshmallow toaster and Josh’s stamping foot which detonated a blast.

A Celebration of the Arts

Positive feedback has been pouring in from the school and general community, raving about the amazing talents of the Margaret River students.

Bel Howse and her catering students provided the audience with a delicious supper in the interval break. A very big thank you to Bel and all her helpers.

I would like to thank all the Arts staff for their hard work throughout the year especially in preparation for the Arts Festival. This includes Kate Marzohl-Duffy and Caroline Juniper for the Art display, Priscilla Den Boer for her co-ordination with the musical items, Tarna Osbourne and Susie Spiers for the vocal contribution, Mark Hassall, Paul Hooper and Melita Franklin for McCormack for the Dramatic monologues, which were

2009 Arts FestivalWeek 7 in the Performing Arts certainly was a busy time. Students were involved in rehearsals galore and were very excited about the upcoming performance on the 2nd and 3rd September. The foyer of the Cultural Centre was prepared to showcase the Art work of the Year 8-10 Visual Arts students. The diversity and development of the students’ art work was fantastic.

From 7pm on both nights the students bedazzled the full audience with their talent and hard work. They should be proud of how they performed and their professional etiquette.

humorous start to the night with the Year 11 Devised play’ Destination Unknown’. Well done to Bradley Ellis in Year 11 who was a wonderful stage manager over the two evenings. Look out for CABARET 2010!

Spare Parts Puppet Show ‘Blueback’ and ‘African Alive’The Year 8 students and the Year 9 Drama students viewed a performance by the Spare Parts Puppet theatre in the Cultural Centre. This was part of the Year Dance /Drama course and was designed to expose the students to a live performance. The Year 9 students then participated in a Puppeteer Workshop which extended the students to look at all aspects of the art form.

A group called ‘Africa Alive’ visited our school on the 18th August and gave the performing arts students the most inspirational performance, asking the students to value self worth, to respect and to fi nd their own personal rhythm through music.

What’s coming up – Visual Arts and DramaThe Year 11 and 12 Visual Art students are gearing up for the annual Creating Identity exhibition in October at Jahroc Galleries. During fi rst semester they produced some beautiful silk scarves infl uenced by an expedition to Michelle Miller’s studio on Station Road. This semester the students are working on paintings and prints with a ‘Gothic’ theme. October is not really far away so get ready for the big night out at Jahroc Galleries which displays Year 11 and 12 work from a range of creative areas.

The Year 10 Drama students will also present a play ’DAGS’ in Term 4 which they are already working hard on. We look forward to their performance.

40 Hour FamineLast weekend approximately 85 of our students participated in the Annual 40 Hour Famine to raise funds for World Vision. This year students had a choice of what they would give up – food, technology (mobile phones, Ipods etc), furniture or possibly work (for no pay!!) for the weekend.

Our target fi gure as a school was $2000 and at last count (donations are still coming in) $1300 has been raised. Thank to all our participants.

Year 12’s Directions and Scholarships for 2010 and Beyond

Currently Margaret River Senior High is distributing, and assisting students in using, materials from TISC (Tertiary Institution Services Centre) that describe the process for applying for University entry. We suggest that every student who is eligible for

Likewise we also suggest that every student who isn’t certain of University entry or doesn’t know what they want to do next year apply for TAFE courses.

Parents of course have other concerns, like how to support your child while they study. Scholarships are one way to fi nd fi nancial assistance for study, there are literally hundreds of different scholarships out there but fi nding them and applying can be diffi cult.

To assist parents some good websites and sources of information are listed below. These websites include many general scholarships available at all Universities but also show specifi c scholarships unique to fi nancial circumstances, particular courses, rural students, and gender. The sites also have search engines which help you fi nd all the suitable Scholarships you can apply for:

• scholarships.curtin.edu.au/undergraduate/ gives information on the scholarships available at Curtin University. www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/undergrad does the same job for UWA .• www.oss.murdoch.edu.au/scholarships/allforms.html is the scholarship site for Murdoch University.• www.ecu.edu.au/student/fees/scholarships/ecuschols.php is the scholarship site for ECU University.• www.nd.edu/~fi naid/undergraduate/scholarships/index.shtml is the scholarship site for Notre Dame University.

If you need advice or have any questions please contact Liam Smith at the school on 9757 0769.

University entry does apply as they can always defer or reject an offer of study if it is not what they want to do next year.

Welcome Ibu LinaIndonesian Language AssistantWelcome Ibu Lina (Paulina Gupta Wijaya), our new Indonesian Language Assistant. Ibu Lina has spent her fi rst semester at Perth Metropolitan schools and she will spend her second semester at MRSHS and our cluster schools; MRPS and Cowaramup PS. Ibu Lina came from Yogyakarta, Central Java. She is very keen to meet our students at MRSHS and encouraged them to practice their Indonesian language speaking with her.

Angela McCoy

On Monday 17 August, 35 Year 8 and 9 MRSHS students participated in the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day at the Consulate of the Republic of Indonesia in Perth, followed by a buffet lunch at Osh5One Indonesian restaurant. The aim is to introduce students to real life situation in aspects of food and culture of the language they are studying.

Margaret River SHS Indonesian Choir students also performed at the Consulate. Their performance was much appreciated by the Acting Consul and guests with an invitation to perform again next year. The students were interviewed and their performance televised around Indonesia.

Congratulations go to a group of Year 9 students who recently won fi rst price in the Regional Division of the National Cows Create Careers Project. Dynamic Agriculture students, Karla Gibbon, Amala Sheridan-Hulme, Jesse O’Meagher and Alicia Driver took part in the competition in which they helped hand rear and care for two four-week old dairy calves. Students were required to establishment calf housing facilities, provide hay and grain and bottle feed the calves. Scientifi c studies of the calves included weight gain, health checks, and growth and development observations. Students also had to submit posters, a PowerPoint presentation and business letters thanking the mentoring farmers, Nicole and Rodney May for kindly loaning the animals and their industry advocate Regional Organiser Leanne Ablett. At the Presentation Ceremony recently held in Busselton, the girls were presented with their winning certifi cates and a cash prize to take home. Well done to the other groups in the class who also participated and did a splendid job.

NetballCongratulations to all the girls who have been involved in School Netball during 2009. It has been a busy but rewardingyear. 60 students participated in the South West High Schools’ Cup in Bunbury. Three teams were very close towinning their way into the fi nals held in Perth and we were unfortunate to lose by a few goals. This included the Upper School team, Year 10 team and Year 9 team.

I would like to thank all the parents for their patience considering the High School Cup was postponed at the lastminute due to weather conditions. Unfortunately, due to the change of date and other excursions, some students wereunable to attend the rescheduled date. This did disrupt some teams, so overall it was a great effort by the students. If any parent have not received a re-imbursement for students who could not attend the resceduled date, pleaes contactme on 9757 0761.

The Year 10 team, from their strong effort in Bunbury, were invited to the 2009 Lightning Carnival in Perth early thishiTerm. This was a great opportunity for these girls to celebrate their Lower School Netball and was a great trip away.yCongratulations to all girls involved.

We also recently had a visit from Aranmore Catholic College and had a friendly challenge involving Year 8 - 10 students. One team had a close fi nish losing only by two goals, whilst the other team fought hard against a very talented team.Aranmore were very strong this year, winning the Year 9 Lower Division at the High School Cup and the Open Division,so this is great exposure for our girls. Unfortunately Warwick SHS had to re-schedule their tour and will not be visitingthis year. Melville SHS had to cancel due to a clash of dates with our Winter Carnival in Bunbury during Week 9.

Finally I would like to acknowledge and congratulate Lauren Johnston, Anne Hickey, Ingrid Colyer and Ellie Williamsfor their selection and commitment to training with the Regional team, South West Jets. The girls were very successfulplaying in the grand fi nal which is a great achievement. This is a huge commitment requiring travel for games andtraning to Busselton, Bunbury and Perth. Well done girls.

Also I like to wish all outgoing Year 12 Netballers all the best for your future as you have been great role models for the community and school.

2009 Siren’s Cup ChampionTerm 3 saw the Upper School girls get together to compete in the Siren’s Cup football competition. It comprised of Year 10 to 12 students, however was primarily made up of Year 11’s. On Tuesday 4 August, we travelled to MacKillop SHS and were succesful, coming away with an 87 to 9 point victory. Our next game saw Busselton SHS come down to us, and on Tuesday 18 August, we met at Margaret River Nipper’s Oval to a strong home crowd, and very muddy conditions. This did not deter the girls at all, and once again, they played hard and were not afraid to get thier socks dirty...literally! The two games invloved some heavy tackiling and lots of teamwork. Best on ground over both games was Tash Rigby and Ingrid Coylier, with Ellie Williams also putting in a solid performance as rover. Mariah Suares and Sophie Noske suffered the worst tackles, but as with all the girls, continued on laughing. The games were excellent to watch, and all the team should be proud of their efforts. They are now secured as the lower South West Champion Girl’s football team for 2009.

Many thanks to our loyal and supportive waterboys and umpires, Seve Grantis and Jack MacAuliffe.

Country Week 2009 Small but

SuccessfulThe fi nal week of Term 2 saw a small contingent of 8 girls’ volleyballers and 7 dancers accompanied by their respective coaches ascend on Perth to compete against the best teams from across country WA. Both the girls’ volleyball and dance competed in their ‘A’ division ensuring stiff competition.

Besides the daytime fi xtures, the team was suitably occupied in the evening by a range of activities throughout the week, including a river cruise, movie

night, late night shopping and even a spot of retail therapy at Harbour Town.

The conduct of all the girls was exemplary both at sporting/dance venues and after hours. In terms of supervision, the group was a delight and made the accompanying teachers’ jobs very easy and most enjoyable.

The dance troupe attended a series of workshops focussing on a variety of genres including contemporary, hip hop and indigenous and a workshop on choreography itself. The troupe was then given a piece of music which they were to choreograph a dance routine incorporating all genres. The fi nal result was a stylish and innovative performance that drew the praise of both spectators and judges alike. Considering the Margaret River dance troupe was primarily Year 11 students, their 4th place fi nish and invaluable experience from the week stands them in good stead for 2010.

The girls’ volleyball team had been training and playing as a cohesive unit for 2 years leading up to this event having already experienced success at previous school based carnivals. Their skill level and match experience proved too much for the opposing schools, fi nishing the week undefeated winning 22 sets out of a possible 24. The fi nal was a thrilling 3 set affair against Albany SHS with Margaret River dropping the fi rst set and fi ghting back to win the last two and the A Grade title. It really is just rewards for all their efforts. Despite the 200 Albany supporters courtside the support from the Margaret River dance girls – particularly Mrs Beecham – could still be heard and was most appreciated.

This week would not have been possible without the determined efforts of coordinator Paul Beecham, who despite organising the week itself, stayed back at school to minimise disruption to ongoing programs. The size of the team decreased numerous times leaving the unenviable task of rebooking and reconfi rming numbers to all venues. Despite this, Paul did not lose focus of getting the team, however small, away. Costing a little over $500.00 - considering this cost covers accommodation for the week, transport to and from Perth and around Perth for the week, all night time activities and all meals, venue use and team registration – it remains a well priced event that with a little fundraising by the students themselves is very affordable. Those students that attend Country Week widely regard it as the best event of their schooling years. Let’s try to get numbers up for 2010.

Many thanks to Kara Beecham and Stuart Kupfer-Hollis, for their efforts leading up to the week, and on the week itself. As any staff member that has attended Country Week in the past will attest, it is a long week with most days starting at 7am and not fi nishing till 10 pm, but defi nitely worth the effort.
