Welcome Back

Welcome back to what will be an amazing new school year at Margaret River Primary. We have been working hard before the commencement of the school year to make sure that students hit the ground running. The first day of the new school year is always amazing with so many students excited to start back again. We have a number of new families who have joined us that we would like to welcome and we have said farewell to many friends who have commenced at the new school, Rapids Landing Primary. We are currently confirming our enrolment numbers through making contact with families who have not returned. We finished 2017 with over 970 students and currently have 860 enrolled for this year. At the end of week 3, all schools report their enrolment numbers and have their budgets and class structures confirmed for the year. We love having your support of our school and look forward to working with your family this year.

Kiss and Drop

Thank you to everybody who is using the pick-up and drop-off zone in the laneway on the south side of the school. Traffic is flowing well through this area thanks to parents not parking in the drop-off zone. You can help keep congestion down by driving through if your children are not there yet or by coming a few minutes later to make sure that they are.

Internet User Agreements

Have you seen your child’s internet user agreement yet? It’s important to us that we provide a safe online environment for everybody and part of this is developing good digital citizens in our children. The agreement will be coming home for you to read through with your family, sign and return to school this week.

P&C News

A big welcome to all new and returning families.

The Margaret River Primary School P & C supports our school by doing these things:

1. Coming to P&C meetings (once a month, 10 meetings a year)

2. Giving our Principal parent feedback at P&C meetings

3. Managing the school Canteen

4. Fundraising for our school

5. Working out how to best spend the money we've raised

6. Helping out in any way we can

If you can do any of these things, we’d love to meet you. Keep your eyes peeled for the date of our next

meeting, which we’ll announce soon.

HELP US TO REDUCE OUR FOOTPRINT ON THE PLANET AND INCREASE OUR RECYCLING PROGRAMS

We have joined with Terracycle to recycle all of our dental hygiene items. Program accepted waste includes any brand of:

used toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, plastic toothbrush packaging, interdental brushes, wisps, pumps, stand up toothpaste bottles, any kind of non-electric toothbrush or toothpaste tube and, all affiliated non-recyclable packaging.

In order to recycle this waste stream properly, please make sure all excess product has been removed (i.e. lefto-ver toothpaste). Additionally, if you choose to rinse your product, please note that it must be completely dry prior to shipping. We cannot ship dripping packages. As an added bonus, the Australian school that collects the most product wins $1000 and a bench made from the recycled materials! Please deliver your products to Miss Angell in the front office.

School Canteen—Online Ordering

Ordering your child’s school lunches is so much easier now that you can do it online. Register

once at https://quickcliq.com.au/sign-up.aspx, (these registration details can also be found in

the Quick Links section on our MRPS homepage). Once registered you can order from the

comfort of home or work throughout the year.

Our lovely canteen ladies are always on the look out for volunteers to help out every week. If you are able to

spare a few hours once or several times, then we would love to hear from you. Pop your head in to the canteen

and say hi to Desiree, Jude and Mara, or alternatively, you can leave your details with us on 9757 2666.

Student Health and Wellbeing MRPS Code of Conduct incorporates six core values:

Cooperation, Empathy, Enthusiasm, Flexibility, Honesty and Respect

SDERA (School Drug Education & Road Aware) Welcome back, I hope you had a fun and safe holiday season with lots of quality time with your family. While parents and family will always have the primary role in children’s safety and wellbeing, education is vital for children and young people to thrive in an increasingly complex society. The school implements this Challenges and Choices (SDERA) program, as part of our schools EQ health program. Every newsletter there is an article about one of the 5 focus areas: Resilience and Wellbeing, Drug Education, Passenger Safety, Pedestrian Safety and Safety on Wheels. We change focus areas depending on what the Inquiry topics are within the school. We share vital information and some interesting statistics. The aim of the SDERA program is to educate children and families with the hope of empowering them to make personal and socially-responsible decisions. I hope you and your family learn and maybe develop new skills this year. SDERA This term I will talk about Safety on Wheels and Passenger & Pedestrian Safety, as the year 4s will be participating in their Wharncliffe Mill bike camp in week 5. Every day we have many children using wheeled devices to get to school. Cycling, riding and other wheeled devices are healthy and environmentally friendly activities, as well as being convenient modes of transport. We are very lucky to have so many tracks and cycling paths in Margaret River with such impressive scenery. Before you start, you have a check list. Please remember to go through these safety precautions regularly; • Check that your child has a fitted helmet and protective gear • Make sure wheels spin freely • Check tyres (worn or flat) • Fix any loose wheel nuts or broken spikes • Are the brakes working? • Make sure chain is clean and can move freely, it should be kept lightly oiled. • Has your bike got reflectors? They should be at the front and back of the bike. • Does you bell still work? • Check there are no sharp edges That’s it – you’re done. Did your child’s bike or wheeled devise pass the safety check? If not, get it repaired straight away. Don’t risk their safety. Did you know a bicycle helmet is designed to offer the wearer protection and if worn correctly, may decrease the risk of a head injury by up to 85%? Non-helmeted cyclists are three times more likely to be killed as a result of a crash.

Thank you for playing a vital role in your child’s road safety education. For more information visit www.sdera .wa.edu.au

Value—Enthusiasm One of Margaret River Primary School Virtues is Enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is when we have a strong liking for, or interest in someone or something. We can display enthusiasm in our schoolwork by trying extra hard and listening carefully to instructions when the teacher is talking to the class. Remember, it is easier to achieve things with enthusiasm.

Walking or Riding Safely to School Exercise is an important part of children’s lives. It is important for their health and fitness

and wellbeing. Being a pedestrian however can be dangerous, especially for children who

have not yet developed the skills to navigate road s safely. Young children up to the age

of 10 years must be supervised at all times when on or near roads because;

Brain development,

Experience with traffic,

May not realise or understand the dangers,

Cannot judge speed or distance,

Drivers cannot always see young children,

just to name a few. Children lack peripheral vision and may only see objects directly in front of them, unless they deliberately turn their heads. It is important for parents and carers to be good role models, explain the road rules to children and supervise children when near traffic. Our school and surrounding areas have a great deal of traffic, please help us keep ALL our children safe.
