A pplying for a summer job can be challenging,
considering hundreds of other teens and
college students are also searching for those
summer jobs around the same time. Whether you
want to work indoors or outdoors, fi nd the job that will
make you happy the entire season because realizing
after you start the job that you don’t care for the work
is discouraging.
Once you’ve made sure that the employer is looking
to fi ll summer jobs, you’ll want to make sure you have
a resume and cover letter. By having a good resume
you can set yourself apart from other teens.
Making a commitment to stay the entire season and
following through on that commitment may assure you
an ongoing summer job for years to come.
Securing a Summer job is
Impress at the InterviewTattoos and body/face piercing may be cool but
until you know your employer’s policy it’s best to
cover up or remove. Summer jobs differ in whether
visible tattoos are acceptable, so be ready for a no
visible piercing/tattoo policy at some companies.
Get there early. A successful summer job interview
starts here. Being on time results in almost always
being late—so show up at least 10-15 minutes
early. This shows the employer that the interview is
important to you.
Never arrive to an interview chewing gum or
drinking a beverage. This shows disrespect and is a
quick way to lose a great summer job to another teen.
Leave your cell phone in the car or silence it. A
phone sounding off during an interview is disrespectful
and shows the employer that the summer jobs he has
available should go to more mature teens.
If you came with a friend or a parent. Leave
them in the car. Show the employer that you
are independent and can handle an interview with
parental or peer guidance.
Competitive
Here are some tips on helping you stand out over your summer job seeker competition.
▼
Did you know that employers offering summer
jobs to young people will routinely check out a job
prospects social media? Be sure to clean up your
Facebook and Twitter accounts, making sure they
are free of any inappropriate posts or photos.

Offer your hand to the person who is conducting
the interview. A hand shake goes a long way. Be
formal—“hello,” “it’s nice to meet you.” No “hey” or
“what’s up.” You’ll be evaluated from the moment
you arrive. When offered a seat, without looking like a
statue, sit up straight and don’t slouch.
Don’t forget to make eye contact with everyone
you interact with during your interview and
appear interested. Also—throw on a smile.
Employers like happy employees.
More than likely you’ll be asked the question,
“Why do you want to work here?” By doing just a little
research about the company you’ll be able to respond
with things you like about the company and how you’d
make a positive addition to their team.
Avoid those dreaded dead words – “like, “um”,
“you know” – employers will really take notice.
Never request a restroom break once the
interview has begun. Take care of this before you
arrive. The interview may last 30 minutes or it may last
over 1 hour.
Always speak with confi dence.
Be curious. By asking questions about the summer
job or the company, it shows the prospective
employer you are serious about the job and their
company.
Be on your best behavior, even when you think
no one is watching you. Don’t try to sneak a phone
call or a text. If you’re caught the employer will know
that you can’t be relied upon.
Don’t rush. Trying to end the interview early shows
you won’t take this summer job seriously or you’re not
interested and the employer should look for another
teenage candidate. Remember—the interview isn’t
over until the interviewer is done.
Be clear when you are able to start a summer
job. If you need time before you can begin let the
employer know.
▼ Your summer job may allow you to wear shorts
and tee shirts but impress your employer by
dressing for success in your interview.
MALES No jeans. Choose khaki pants or
business pants with a pressed shirt. Ask a parent
or teacher for suggestions if needed. Rarely is a
shirt and tie required for a summer job interview
but if you’ll be working in an offi ce, go the extra
mile and wear the tie to impress this employer.
Clean, non-athletic shoes are a must too.
Remember summer jobs are competitive. Make
yourself stand out among the sea of teen job
seekers.
FEMALES No jeans. You want to make
sure that you dress better than your teenage
competition, while dressing appropriately.
No short or tight dresses and no fl ip fl ops or
high heels that you can’t walk in. Look like a
respectful, responsible teen. Wear little jewelry
and no exposed shoulders, cleavage or stomach.
Don’t overdo the perfume or the makeup.

AFTER THE SUMMER JOB INTERVIEWAfter the interview, thank the interviewer for their time and ask
them if it would be acceptable to follow up with them to answer
any questions you may have. Go home and prepare a thank you
letter or email expressing your interest in the summer job—get it
out within 24 hours.
If you haven’t heard back from the employer after a week, make a
phone call or send them an email inquiring on whether a decision
was made and expressing your continued interest. Once you’ve
sent the email or if you left a voicemail message—be sure to
check your emails and messages often. If the employer can’t get
back in touch with you, they may assume you’re not interested
and they will move on to the next candidate.

1. Tell the truth
If you lie to get a job, you can be fired again.
So don’t leave that job off your application
or resume. Include it. Under “Reason for
leaving,” just write, “Please speak with me.”
You don’t have to write out the details in your
resume or job application. Instead, tell your
story, in person, during your job interview.
2. But, don’t over-share, either
You need to rebuild people’s trust in you.
Trust starts when you own up to your mis-
takes. But you only need to tell just enough of
the story. Keep your remarks brief:
“I said some things to a co-worker that I
thought were funny, but they were actually
inappropriate. I’ve learned to be more
careful.”
“A co-worker and I had a disagreement
and we were both let go.”
“I violated the company’s policy about
____.”
3. Don’t play the blame game
Maybe your former boss was impossible to
work with. But he’s not applying for a job.
This is about you. The hiring manager wants
to know what kind of employee you’ll be?
Will you be a reliable teammate?
Will you make the effort to get along with
everyone—even the people you don’t like?
Will you follow company policies?
If you will, say so.
4. Don’t make excuses
I promise you, your interviewer won’t be inter-
ested. Instead of giving excuses like,
“I was going to return the money after the
weekend.”
“That guy was trying to get me fired for
months.”
“You know those drug tests aren’t per-
fect.”
Instead, take responsibility. You might say, “I
did it and wish I hadn’t, because look where
I am now. I would never do it again.”
5. Show what you’ve learned from your
mistake
Show that you know how to be responsible
for your behavior and how to act in a work-
place. You might say something like this…
“I didn’t think it was that big a deal until I
lost my job. It’s the toughest lesson I ever
had to learn. If you hire me, I promise you
this—I’ll do a good job for you every day.”
We all make mistakes. Sometimes we make really bad mistakes. Worse, sometimes we make them at work—fighting, arguing, bullying, stealing, drug use. When you’re fired for any of these reasons, don’t expect a good recommendation from the boss. But without a reference, how do you get your next job? Here are some tips…
“What if my former boss won’t give me a good recommendation?”

Aryia Kellogg came to WorkOne
Hammond to gain stable employment
with opportunity for growth and possibly
the start to her career. Most of Kellogg’s
work experience was with the military
as a truck driver for the Army National
Guard. Her other experiences include
working at Walmart as a cashier and in
inventory management, and working
as a conductor with Union Pacifi c
Railroad. She was interested in regaining
employment in the railroad industry, or
factory work. Kellogg received help from
WorkOne Hammond staff and services,
and achieved her employment goals.
In order for Kellogg to reach her
goals, she participated in the Operation
Job Ready Vet program. She attended
workshops for resume building and
used interview stream to help prepare
her for the job market. After Kellogg’s
preparation and hard work, she applied
what she learned and is now employed
with Unilever in Hammond, IN. She is
enjoying the
work so far. She
feels she has
reached her goal
fi nding stable
employment with
great pay and
benefi ts.
Kellogg’s advice to anyone thinking
about going to WorkOne is, “Stay
positive and be sure to take advantage of
everything WorkOne is offering you.” ■
Scott Beauchemin fi rst
came to LaPorte WorkOne as
an unemployment requirement.
He’s a retired marine and was an
unemployed consultant. At fi rst he
participated at WorkOne only because
he had to. But, while participating
in the mandatory workshops and
Veteran services, the unemployed
consultant began to fi nd value in the
services offered at WorkOne. He
is currently employed and enjoying
his position, and the challenges
and learning experiences it brings.
Beauchemin credits WorkOne with
helping him on his employment
journey.
“The veteran service at WorkOne
was most helpful. Everyone stood
up clapping when I got a job. It’s
really discouraging when you don’t
hear back after an interview, but the
WorkOne staff was positive and they
helped me when I was negative. They
told me the truth and gave me some
direction and that was really necessary
at the time for me. I really want them
to know how they helped me.”
Buechemin said that when you
retire from the military you have to
change the way you talk. As he
participated in the Veteran group
sessions he realized
that he hadn’t changed
all of his military-
style communication.
Some veteran’s hadn’t
changed at all, “You
have to change and
adjust to the civilian
world. I was told. They
truly helped me they were
there when I needed them.” ■
Kassidy Laffoon wasn’t able to
receive her high school diploma,
so, she decided to enroll in Adult
Education classes in Demotte. She
had a plan to further her education
and get her High School Equivalency
Diploma (HSE). As she went through
classes her plans doubled as she
learned about more training and
education opportunities from her
instructor. After completing her HSE,
she showed interest in being a part of
the work experience program (WEX)
and completing phlebotomy training.
For phlebotomy training, Laffoon
had to go to class every other day
for one month and then completed
clinicals where she learned many skills.
Laffoon plans to use this training in the
future while working in a lab.
Laffoon’s next goal was to secure
stable employment and she was
ready for work experience. Before
being placed in a WEX, her instructor
went over the interviewing process to
prepare her for an interview with Oak
Grove Christian Retirement Center.
She got the job and completed her
WEX as a dietary aid. The employer
liked her so much that Laffoon
was hired on after the WEX was
completed.
Since her recent experience with
Adult Education and WorkOne,
Laffoon has been fi lling out college
applications while still maintaining her
employment at Oak
Grove. She plans to
attend college and
obtain her bachelor’s
degree in bio chemistry
where she will then
work in a lab for about
a year. After she gets
experience in the lab,
she aspires to go back to medical
school to become a pediatrician. ■
