There’s a path… though it
winds its way through darkness
We would choose…
to avoid it if we could
We awake…
to an unexpected calling
God says, “come… there are
gifts in the Dark Wood” * Have you ever had an
experience of being in the Dark
Wood? What I mean is… have you
ever experienced uncertainty,
lostness, emptiness, or failure? We
all have at one time or another. I
think most of us are there more
often than we would like.
This Lent we are exploring
what it means to be in the Dark
Wood moments of our lives. We
are not just talking about how to
get out of the woods, as if life is
good only when we are not there.
We are exploring what it might
mean for our lives to recognize the
gifts of the Dark Wood. What if
times of uncertainty, failure or
emptiness are opportunities for
spiritual awakening?

Page 2 The Judea Journal
I chose the topic for this
Lent, because this congregation
and I are in a Dark Wood time in
our life together. I am getting
ready to retire in a year – which
is causing more internal
upheaval that I expected – and
the congregation is already in
the search process for a new
pastor, which is always a time of
uncertainty. For the search
committee, it is a heavy
responsibility that may feel
overwhelming at times. It is also
a time full of possibility. The
congregation can use this time to
identify what positive aspects of
the last 20 years they would like
to carry forward into the next 20
years and what new directions
you would like to go together, so
that you can look for a candidate
with gifts in new areas.
This month, we are
beginning a year of “lasts.” This
will be our last Lent together
and my final Easter service. It is
sort of appropriate that it is my
turn to do the Easter Sunrise
service up at the crest of New
Preston Hill. This will be your
last chance to greet the Sunrise
on Easter with me at 6:30AM
beside the old stone church. I’ll
be giving my last Community
Lenten Lunch reflection at
Salem Covenant church on
March 7th – join me for soup and
sandwiches at noon.
Speaking of Easter… Our
Christian Education Team is
redesigning the Easter Egg hunt,
to limit candy and plastic. This
year, the eggs with have puzzle
pieces, clues, and questions that
will lead to other activities. The
children will be excused from
worship after the children’s time
as on a normal Sunday and the
hunt and other activities will be
led by our Team assisted by the
Youth Group. Easter falls on a
Communion Sunday and April
Fools’ Day this year. Salem’s
former pastor, Doug Bixby once
called my worship style,
“whimsical” – but I am not
planning any April Fool’s joke.
The sermon this Easter will be
on the foolishness of faith.
And mark your calendars for
April 8. Once again, my Baptist
minister friend from seminary,
who is now a full-time magician
will come and lead us in a “Magic
Sunday.” Every part of the
service will include “magic with
a message” that children will
especially enjoy.
Whenever you are traveling
through a Dark Wood, it is good
to have companions on the
journey. We each bring our own
gifts to share so that we can
encourage each other and make
the journey joyful. Together, let
us find the Gifts of the Dark
Wood this month.
Environmental Stewardship
We recognize the need in this
church to take greater
responsibility for the care of our
Earth and are forming a “Green
Team” here at the church. People
of all ages* are welcome to join us
in the effort. All you need is a
willingness to make changes and
make an impact.
We are planning a gathering
to kick off our new Green Team.
WHEN: Friday, April 6, 6-9 PM
(Movie starts at 7 pm)
WHERE: The Parish House
WHAT: Pot Luck Supper
and Movie Screening
"Bag It! Is your life too plastic?"
REGISTER: Online or contact
Terri Tibbatts at (860) 350-1919
or Karen Esslinger at (860) 868-
0569.
When you register, please tell us:
How many people will be coming?
Will you be there for dinner or just
the movie?
If so, what will you bring?
(Note that movie is 1.5 hours and
so may be a bit tedious for
children under 10 unless they are
pretty mature. There is no "bad"
language, though.)
Even if you are just curious
about the issue, you are welcome
to join us. We have some
activities in
mind for
implementing
here at
church, in our
homes and in
our
communities.
But we are open to all ideas and
plan to make environmental
stewardship an integral and
permanent part of our church's
life. If you are interested in
coming to the pot luck movie
screening and/ or want to get
involved in other activities, please
let us know.

** Revised **
2018 Annual Meeting Date: June 3
This Church is YOUR Church
The words are penned by John Lintner to
encourage participation in the CAT Survey and
sung to the tune of, “This Land is Your Land.” He
sang for us in church and was back by popular
demand where we all sang along. You can sing,
too! Enjoy!
Chorus:
This church is your church. This church is my church.
From Woodruff Manor to Wersebe Diner
From the Youth Room upstairs to the Parlor downstairs,
This church is made by you and me.
(First verse)
We have the Green Fair and the Harvest Dinner
Then Christmas oranges and Lent and Easter.
We pray together and help each other.
This church is made by you and me.
Chorus.
(Second verse)
I roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps
From the basement storage to the steeple belfry,
And all around me a voice was singing,
“This church is made by you and me.”
Chorus.
(Third verse) -Next column
We need your help now; we need your voice now
To take the survey put out by Holy Cow.
It’s very simple: just use your iPhone.
Join us all and do the Holy Cow! (Holy cow!)
Join us all and do the Holy cow! (Holy cow!)
Join us all and to the Holy Cow! (Holy cow!)
Moo!

Reaching Out to Help and Support Our Neighbors—Near and Far Jim Esslinger (860-919-5207) or [email protected] , Missions Chair
Our next service date for the Loaves and Fishes Hospitality Kitchen is
Thursday, March 29.
At this point, we are in need of all food items on the menu, including Shepherd’s
Pie, Salad, Bread, Fruit, Ice Cream… You can sign up online, or on the bulletin
board in the church hall. Drop-off for food items is Wednesday, March 28 (until 5
pm) and Thursday, March 29 before noon.
If you have any questions about it, please contact Dick Connor [email protected],
or Jim Esslinger (contact info at top of page).
Greetings Congregation! I am excited to be the new missions chair (pending approval, of course, at
the annual meeting on June 3). John Turner and Annie Baur have done a splendid job for many years
and will be a hard act to follow but I am up for the challenge! They are still very active with various
missions because helping others is so much a part of who they are. And there are a few others I would
like to take a moment to mention. Dick Connor is taking responsibility for coordination of our quarterly
Loaves and Fishes service and Jean Baldwin (Beckstrom) is coordinating the food bank donations. Our
active group of missions volunteers is growing! If you are interested in pitching in somehow, let me
know and we can find a rewarding activity for you.
March 29 is the date of the next Loaves and Fishes meal that we will be preparing. We need
additional food prep volunteers and kitchen help as well. Karen has set up an online volunteer form
that is updated in real time on our church website. You can click on the link from the home page
announcement or directly from the ad on the right side of that page. The sign up sheet is still on the
bulletin board near the kitchen as an alternative way to get your name on the list.
The food bank donations are almost at 1,000 lbs for the year…including canned goods, boxed
goods and personal care items. Keep up the good work and please
continue to fill the grocery cart near the office so we can make our annual
goal of 2000# by the end of June.
Trivia Night is happening again this year at FCC of Washington!
April 21 is the date of the event. The donation is $100 per table of up to 6
people. (works out to less than $20 pp for some terrific entertainment and fellowship) This really was a
fun night out last year and for a great cause, too. Proceeds will be donated to the building fund for the
new Loaves and Fishes location in New Milford. Five teams area already registered! Form your teams
now and get ready for some fun! If you’d rather join with another team, just contact the church office
and let Karen know. (860) 868-0569 Each team will be responsible for bringing their own snacks or
special beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided. Filtered water is always available, too.
Some ideas I have for the future include personally visiting local missions that we have supported in
the past to help the congregation understand more about what their current needs are and how our
donations are helping them achieve those needs. Also, I would like to get someone from those missions
that we support to come and speak at our church. I believe there are two times a year at the church
allocated for that sort of thing. I think it is as important to have the congregation meet a “real person”
as it is for the recipients of our donated funds to see the faces of those who support their mission.
Opportunities to Help:

Food Bank - Drop off donations to our food cart in the Parish House foyer.

SUNDAY SCHOOL
This month in Sunday School, we will continue our celebration of Lent and Easter. The kids have
been hard at work building and creating three scenes from the Easter story (Palm Sunday, the Last
Supper, and the Angel at the tomb). Their work is quite impressive so far! We will continue to work on
these for the next few Sundays and share them when they are completed. We will also continue to fill
out our Lent notebooks as we adventure around the Parish House, learn more about our Sunday School
classmates, and create our own stories.
On Easter we will celebrate with an Easter Egg Hunt hosted by the Youth Group on the Green
during Church! The children will start in Church to hear a message from Cheryl and will then head
outside before the sermon. This year's hunt will feature less stuff and more fun together. Don't worry,
there will still be eggs to find and some candy to be had! We hope you will join us!
And save the date for the second annual Magic Sunday! on April 8th we will again be joined by Rev.
David Reed-Brown as he shares his magic ministry with our church. Bring a friend or a neighbor to
share in the fun!
Hope to see you there! Carrie Loyd ([email protected])
YOUTH GROUP
Upcoming meeting dates:
Sunday, March 25th Sunday, May 27th
Sunday, April 29th Sunday, June 10th (Youth Sunday)
The First Congregational Church of Washington's Youth Group is for grades 6-12 and all are welcome!
Our regular meetings are on the last Sunday of every month from 5-7 pm at the Parish House. Every
meeting involves a group discussion focusing on the current month's faith practice, food, games, and
much more. If you have any questions, please contact Emelie (203-405-6710) or Mike Burl,
or via email at [email protected], or [email protected] .
Youth Programs
Every second Sunday, a group of high school teens gather during coffee hour to
discuss the ways in which they can not only get more involved in the church, but also
how their faith gets involved in their lives outside of the church.
This group is open to new members in September and January. If you or your child
are in high school and are interested in joining, please contact Emelie Samuelson or
Mike Burl.
Our Christian Education Team is working on some awesome
new features to our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday.
It promises to be fun, engaging, and interactive (in a low-tech
kind of way). We are in need of these plastic eggs. (If your child
was the finder of eggs last year and you took them home, please
recycle the eggs!) You can drop off any donations for this to
the church office or bring to church BY Sunday, March 18
so we have them for stuffing in advance.

BRAHMS’S EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM
Chorus Angelicus & Gaudeamus, plus the choirs of St. Patrick-St. Anthony
and an orchestral ensemble, Dr. Gabriel Löfvall, director
Once more, Chorus Angelicus & Gaudeamus joins forces with the tremendous choirs of St. Patrick-St.
Anthony church, this time to bring to life the extraordinarily comforting and humane Ein Deutsches
Requiem by German composer Johannes Brahms, a masterwork distinguished by its sumptuous choral
writing, ingenious orchestration, and a deep tone of gentle reassuring rather than the overwhelming
sorrow of other Requiem settings: an un-missable event to let the soul bask in the depth of vocal
splendor! For tickets, go to http://chorusangelicus.com or call (860) 496-8841

With Thanks for Doing Good
Dear Friends,
This spring, powerful
storms in the American
midwest have torn up and
flooded the region, leaving
five dead and countless
others vulnerable.
As reports of the damage
and flooding started to come
in, we were prepared to respond. Our warehouse was stocked with CWS Emergency
Cleanup Buckets and Hygiene Kits because of congregations like yours who donated them
after last fall’s devastating hurricane season. We’ve already distributed over 2,000 CWS
Emergency Cleanup Buckets, Hygiene Kits and Blankets to affected communities.
We asked for help restocking our shelves with these critical supplies. And you stepped
up. Thank you for making this response possible!

Church World Service
A note from our Missions chairperson, Jim Esslinger: This past year, we not only sent 32 clean-up buckets
in September in response to the devastating storms in the US, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands, but
we also packed and shipped 60 school kits for distribution wherever they are needed in our country and
around the world. Thanks to all who participated!
Keep an eye out because we will have more opportunities in 2018 for you to lend a hand and/or make a
contribution.
In response to Harvest Dinner funds directed to the Soldier Box Project:
To the members of the First Congregational Church,
Dear Friends,
Thank you—once again you have helped us in our efforts to show our servicemen and women that
they are appreciated. Having these funds available enables fulfillment requests which otherwise
might go unanswered by our group.
We are grateful for your support and appreciate that it reflects hours of work on your part.
Again, thank you.
Sincerely, the Town Hall Gang (penned by Barbara Johnson West)

Christ Has No Body
Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks with
Compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks with
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
