WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH VISION?

HELPING HANDS

CHILDREN’S BULLETINS

Can we truly become a congregation that joyfully inspires others on their faith journey? If so how? It will be an intentional endeavor for each of us. Every vision starts in the heart. Can you be a Christian who is full of Joy because of Jesus? Each of us must be mindful of two things. First, our identity as a saint in Christ Jesus. Second, knowing what flows out of us. Do our words and actions inspire and build the faith of others?

We are developing a number of teams that will intentionally help fulfill the vision and bear fruit along the way in the lives of hundreds of people. We will expand on these teams in the weeks to come. But here are the five developing now.

More than five thousand people pressed in on Jesus as He was seeking to withdraw to be by Himself. He did not turn

them away but had compassion on them. He took what little was available, a mere five loaves and two fish, and gave them abundance. Our Lord also has compassion on us, feed-ing us in abundance with His gift of life, which was won for us by His cross and resurrection.

AS WE GATHER

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost, 8/02/2020

W T

L d L r C r

Pastor: Rev. David J. Dahlke │ [email protected]

VISITORS - Thank you for worshiping with us this day and may God bless your time here. We have two types of membership at Lakeside: Full and Associate. Associate members maintain their membership at their home church and consider Lakeside their church home when in the Venice area. Feel free to speak to Pastor Dahlke for more information. Once again, welcome in the name of Christ Jesus.

COMMUNION - We believe that in, with, and under the bread and wine of The Lord’s Supper we receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus, given for the for-giveness of our sins. If that is your belief, you are cordially invited to receive the sacra-ment. The wine is served in individual cups.

HEARING SUPPORT - For those with a T-Coil hearing system, please sit in the left center section as you enter the sanctuary.

Happiness and contentment are hard to find. Even with our abundance of possessions and opportunity, our hearts remain restless for things new and different, for the prom-ise of something better. Paul reminds us that contentment does not come from having everything we desire, but with faith in the Lord, who is gracious and merciful and sup-plies all our needs. Today, we hear the terrible news of John the Baptist’s martyrdom and a crowd restless with hunger. In the midst of it all, Jesus shows forth grace to rest our fears and satisfy us with all we need. We pray that we learn to trust in the Lord and to find contentment and peace in His grace sufficient for all things.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Psalm 121 I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forever-more.

EPISTLE Romans 9:1–13

I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham be-cause they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. For this is what the promise said: “About this time next year I will return and Sarah shall have a son.” And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of elec-tion might continue, not because of works but because of his call— she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14:13–21

Now when Jesus heard [about the death of John], he withdrew from there in a boat to a desolate place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. Now when it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And he said, “Bring them here to me.” Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
