Birthright Medical Trip

Dear Jewish Medical Students: Greetings. I want to tell you about a remarkable opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime experience this spring. Beginning in 2009, an organization called “Birthright” has been offering FREE 10-DAY TRIPS TO ISRAEL for Jewish young adults, under the premise that if Jews would actually see and experience Israel with their own eyes, they would come to understand it much better than from the reports they hear in the daily news. More than 500,000 students from more than 66 countries have already taken advantage of this opportunity. Birthright trips consist of groups of ~ 40 participants on a bus, with a guide, medic, and a few staff. The tour covers much of the country, and includes aspects of Israeli culture, history, religion, politics, archaeology, and entertainment. There are multiple opportunities for fun, including climbing Mount Masada, hiking through rainfalls, swimming (or more accurately, floating) in the Dead Sea, rafting on the Jordan River, and so forth. Of all the Birthright trips each year, there is one that is designed specifically for medical students . It is sponsored by a national organization called American Physicians and Friends for Medicine In Israel (APF). As a national Board member and President-Elect, I had the opportunity to staff the trip last year. It was a remarkable experience, in which the students had the opportunity to better understand and reconcile their emerging identities as physicians with their Jewish identities and feelings about Israel. This trip includes all the fun experiences mentioned above, and adds visits to Israeli hospitals, learning a bit about the Israeli health care system, and observing the training of the Army Medical Corps. Additionally, same-age physicians and medics from the Israel Army will join us for half of the trip. The students who attended last year found it to be an unforgettable, often life-changing experience. I wrote a brief description of last year’s trip, which was published in the Jerusalem Post, Israel’s largest English-language newspaper. The article, attached above, will provide additional information. I will again have the honor to serve as Scholar-in-Residence for this year’s Medical Student Birthright trip, which will depart from New York City on Sunday, May 29 and ret urn on Thursday, June 9 . Usually, the upper age limit is 26, but if you are a bit older, I’d be happy to check whether exceptions could be made. I realize that the timing might not be possible for some of you this year. However, if it can fit into your schedule, I invite you to join other medical students from around the country. Registration information is found below, which includes additional information about the trip. I urge you to register as soon as possible, since the se trips tend to fill up quickly. If you are interested in learning more, please feel free to contact me directly at one of the numbers listed below.
