Saturday Trips

Trip 1 – Dumfries House Farm and Sandyford Farm Dumfries House - In June 2009, Morrisons announced a ground-breaking joint venture with The Great Steward of Scotland’s Dumfries House Trust to farm 700 acres at Dumfries House Estate. The Morrisons Farm at Dumfries House, Ayrshire researches how farming efficiency and sustainability can be further improved. Its aim is to become a leading centre of excellence for farming research, working in partnership with agricultural organisations and share best practice throughout the industry. The farm rears traditional cattle and sheep breeds with the first livestock being Shorthorn and Angus cattle, and some arable crops are grown for animal feed. Research projects will focus on animal feeding, housing and welfare. Sandyford Farm – Gilmour Lawrie has established a high-genetic blended-pedigree Ayrshire herd, having taken on the farm after the 2001 foot-and-mouth epidemic. The Brieryside herd are a mixture of red & white and some pure Ayrshire. Sandyford Farm milks twice a day and has a rapid-exit milking parlour with heat detectors and other management aids to help improve herd fertility. Milk is sold at a premium to First Milk on a Nestle contract, which goes to make chocolate crumb to coat Kit-Kat biscuits. Gilmour’s herd have won the Murchland Trophy for the highest placed Ayrshire herd in the RABDF Gold Cup Competition three times. The competition aims to highlight a combination of high performing high index cows along with top herd management. Trip2 – Hunterston Power Station then Lime Tree Larder EDF Energy has a visitor centre open at Hunterston B in West Kilbride. The visitor centre provides a tour where you can find out more about their nuclear power station operations and how they generate electricity. Groups will be able to come on site and explore electricity with them – seeing first-hand how they use nuclear power to provide low carbon electricity for the UK. Please note that while the visitor centre is open to everyone and is fully accessible to all, the walking tour of the station can take approximately one hour to complete and does take in lifts, narrow corridors and in some cases stairways, so may not be suitable for people with walking difficulties. ** You will be required to bring photographic identification for this visit ** Lime Tree Larder - In 2004, the Wilsons converted a disused stable at their home at Auchencloigh Farm, Kilbirnie into a chocolate-making workroom, a packaging room and an ice cream laboratory. Now they make chocolates by hand for gift boxes, wedding favours, corporate gifts and wholesale, as well as for bags and boxes sold online. During this visit you’ll get some background to the business and what the Wilson’s have done over the last nine years. This is also the opportunity to learn more about chocolate and the group will be able to sample chocolate from 5 different parts of the world. Trip 3 – HMS Gannet, Prestwick then the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Ayr HMS Gannet at RNAS Prestwick. HMS Gannet provides 24-hour military and civilian search and rescue across a large area of Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. On this visit you will hear about the flight operating 3 Sea King Mk 5 helicopters, the varied tasks from recovering fallen climbers in winter snow to rescuing injured fishermen up to 200 miles offshore. Additionally, Gannet SAR provides an important medical evacuation service to the many island communities on Scotland's West coast.

Page 4: The Scottish YFA Reunion Committee invite you to the:-youngfarmers-development.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/document/pdf/736/...The Scottish YFA Reunion Committee invite you to the:-

During this visit you will have the opportunity to have a good look around one of the distinctively painted red and grey helicopters. At HMS Gannet the aim is to have one rescue asset ready to go at any time; with a second being available within a few hours should it be needed. This allows the third to be in deeper maintenance. The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum - No visit to Ayrshire would be complete without our national Bard! The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum offers a truly unique encounter with Scotland’s favourite son. Set in 10 acres of the poet’s cherished Alloway countryside, the museum comprises the famous Burns Cottage where the poet was born, the historic landmarks where he set his greatest work the elegant monument and gardens created in his honour and a modern museum housing the world’s most important collection of his life and works. This visit includes where Maggie was left “scarce a stump” at the Brig O’Doon and the Auld Kirk where Tam O’Shanter “saw an unco sight”. Some of the older parts of the site, such as the Auld Kirk, Brig O’Doon and Burns Monument are accessed by steps or uneven surfaces. Level access is available at Burns Cottage and the main museum as well as along Poet’s Path and in the Burns Monument Gardens. Trip 4 – Dalgarven Mill then the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Ayr Dalgarven Mill - The Museum of Ayrshire Country Life and Costume is a treasure trove, created in a group of outstanding historical industrial buildings in a beautiful rural location. Beautifully restored buildings offer the visitor a chance to step into the past. Experience the sight and sound of the water wheel and the machinery of a Victorian Grain Mill. Rising through four floors and powered by a six metre water wheel, this is one of the oldest and tallest grain mills surviving in Scotland. The granaries on three floors have exhibitions which tell the story of the rural community over the last century, their work, pastimes, dress and life. Robert Burns Birthplace Museum – as per trip 3. Trip 5 – Albert Bartlett and Summerlee Museum Albert Bartlett – A fantastic opportunity to visit the Airdrie head office and main production site of Albert Bartlett potatoes, which was opened in 2002. It is the most modern and environmentally-friendly facility of its type in the world. Having high tech systems that ensure they keep waste, water and energy use down to a minimum, the hydro coolers remove field heat and extend the shelf life of their new potatoes. There are 26 lines of machinery that pack their potatoes 364 days of the year so you can find the best potatoes possible all year round! Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life - For much of the 19th century and early 20th century Scotland was a world leader in engineering; producing a vast array of machinery, tools and finished products. You will see a selection of rare and unique examples from the industry here on display. Explore the machines up close, find out about the skill involved in operating them and why Scotland was at the forefront in a great age of invention and discovery. The main exhibition hall, created in the late 1980's from the former Hydrocon Crane works, now provides an excellent space for the museum's displays and working machinery, including a huge winding engine from the former Cardowan Colliery. Outside, within the 20 acre site, there is a working tramway, with historic trams taking visitors to the reconstructed mine and the miner's cottages. The mine shows the tough conditions in which local miners had to work, and the cottages their living conditions from the 1840s to the 1980s. A short walk up a restored branch of the Monklands Canal, is the all-ages play park and picnic area.

7. Regional Reports - England and Wales Reported by Dai Jones

It gives me great pleasure to give the annual England & Wales YFA Report. Firstly I would like to

congratulate YFA stalwart Delme Harries on being given the honour of Life Vice President of NFYFC and

also Life Vice President of Wales YFC both accolades thoroughly deserved. Also congratulations to James

Cowen on being runner up in the Farmers Weekly Beef Farmer of the Year competition.

Last December the England & Wales YFC Discovery Selection day took place in Stratford upon Avon where

the quality of applicants was fantastic and YFA member Donna Tavenor was chosen as leader for the

Global Youth Ag Summit trip to Canada. Unfortunately not all the places were filled but the vacancies we

re-advertised and in January the YFA conducted telephone interviews resulting in all places being filled.

In July 2 out of 3 members chosen for the Canada 4H trip had to drop out. As Canada were struggling to find a third member to send to the UK it was decided on this occasion to send and receive just 2. The 1 vacant place was advertised on Face book for just 24 hours and the response was tremendous with 12 applicants. The YFA was asked to organise a mini selection day which we held in Stafford and the successful candidate was Alice Bird from County Durham who had a fantastic time in Canada. A total of 11 incoming exchangees came on the NFYFC programme and I’m sure all of them enjoyed their visit to our shores.

In May the NFYFC AGM was held at Blackpool where I presented a cheque of £3,300 on behalf of England & Wales YFA to the NFYFC President Matt Baker and I also presented the YFA scholarships and PowerPoint trophy.

In July I attended the Royal Welsh show, where I presented a cheque of £350 on behalf of the England & Wales YFA to Wales YFC, this being the first year that the YFA has contributed directly to the Wales YFC International Exchange Programme.

The European IFYE conference took place in Monmouth in August and congratulations to Alison, Mary and team for organising such a successful event, also the Rural Youth Europe Autumn Seminar was held in Malvern recently.

The England & Wales YFA is represented at NFYFC Council weekend and during the last year a working party has been set up to review and discuss certain problems with the exchange programme. We now have 2 YFA members in each of the England & Wales areas who are willing to be coordinators and to help and advise the County Organisers.

The Discovery Programme 2014 has recently been launched with some new trips. An under 18’s tall ships sailing trip; a volunteering trip to Ghana; skiing to France and a short trip to Amsterdam. Also in the pipeline is a possible exchange trip to Montana in 2015 and the European Rally is being held in Wales next year.

It just leaves me to thank to Buxton reunion committee for organising a fantastic weekend. I look forward to seeing you all in Irvine next year.

Ulster YFA Reported by: Linda Steel

After taking a month to recover from our reunion the winter got off to a great start with a Roving Supper on Friday 7th December. Almost 40 members navigated their way around County Down to the homes of Willie Annett, Helen Ervine, finishing at Trevor and Claire Woods with a surprise visit from Santa who had a little gift for everyone.

In January our annual dinner at The Vines Restaurant, Garvagh attracted members from all over the world as everyone came dressed in something relating to the country they went to on exchange. After a lovely dinner, sponsorship cheques were presented to the outgoing exchangees, then the real fun began as members competed in table top Olympics and had a go at playing the didgeridoo. Who knew some of our members were very competitive especially at singing!!

In February it was all change at our AGM held in Loughry College, Cookstown. The following office bearers were elected: Patron – John Cromie, Chairperson – Sam Hawkes, Assistant Chairperson – Thomas Lennox, Secretary – Stephanie Fulton, Assistant Secretary – Claire Woods, Treasurer – Jane Kirkpatrick, Assistant Treasurer – Wesley Henderson, PRO – Susan Christie, Joint Web Master – Derek Quinton and Eric Crozier, IFYE Representative – Linda Steele. Committee members – David Hull, Shirley Walker, Willie Annett, Helen Ervine and Janette Stirling. The AGM was followed by presentations from returning exchangees George Shaw – Norway, Stephanie McCollam – USA and Stuart Rea – Australia.

The YFA had their very own Mad Tea Party and Bake off in Desertcreate WI Hall in Cookstown. After a cake decorating demonstration, members culinary delights were put to the test before everyone tucked in to all the sweet treats before the long awaited results were given out.

August saw our Annual Summer outing at Castlewellan Forest Park where members of all ages enjoyed a few ‘wet’ games, walks around the grounds and some even attempted to get lost in the maze. More members joined us as we headed to Rockmount Golf Club, Carryduff for an evening meal.

Four YFCU members enjoyed the YFCU European Rally in Tipperary; five travelled further a field on long term exchange and five enjoyed short term exchange trips, two to Scotland and Wales and one to England.

In July some members enjoyed the short trip to the European IFYE conference in Wales. Another fun and eventful week was had by all those who attended and we would once again like to thank everyone who helped make the week so successful.

We would like to thank this year’s committee and organisers for the warm welcome to Buxton. We have all had a very enjoyable weekend and look forward to meeting up with everyone again at the 58th UK Reunion.

Scotland YFA Reported by: June Forsyth

The first event of the year was the Annual General Meeting held on Friday 9th March in Carnbo hall, Kinross. The following people were elected: Chairman: Richard Wilson; Vice Chairman: Andrew Baird; Secretary: June Forsyth; Treasurer: Mary Turner; Newsletter Editor & IFYE Contact Member: Sally Young; Committee: Marion McPherson, Kirstie Black, Heather McDougall, Sheena Aitken, Paul Fraser, Lizzie Mackie & Harold Greer.

The evening also provided the opportunity for the previous year’s exchangees to present the highlights of their trip. An increased number of people are going out on exchange this year, with 19 Young Farmers going on exchange trips. They received their YFA grant cheques, this included four delegates going to the European Rally and three attending the Spring and Autumn seminars.

Page 11: The Scottish YFA Reunion Committee invite you to the:-youngfarmers-development.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/document/pdf/736/...The Scottish YFA Reunion Committee invite you to the:-

On Wednesday 12th June, YFA hosted the 2013 incoming delegates for the day. Richard met the 13 delegates in Edinburgh & the group then travelled to Gaindykehead, North Lanarkshire, where they were given an interesting tour of the beef finishing unit, by kind permission of the Brown family. After having lunch at Gaindykehead, the group headed onto Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow before having a brief visit to Whitelee wind farm, where they tested how many people it needed to make a chain around one turbine base…answer was 12 & ½ ! The evening meal was kindly provided by the district before the host families came to pick up their exchangee.

The drinks reception at the Highland Show has now become an annual event, once again we held the reception in the Young Farmers Centre on the Friday evening. Approx. 60 people, including members, anniversary delegates and incoming exchange’s enjoyed a few drinks and a good catch up with friends old & new. We had people from far & beyond joining us this year, Mary Geissler, originally from Scotland & previously a YFA member, who now lives in Austria was keen to join in the reminiscing & joined us for the evening. Next year we are hoping for the more the merrier, so if you are in the area or at the Highland Show, please come along on the Friday evening and join us.

The 6th of July was the day for our annual fund raising cycle ride around Loch Katrine, Stirlingshire. The event was supported by a small group of YFA members and friends. Those taking part had a great time, the views were lovely & the weather fantastic, and luckily it was one of our many great summer days this year.

In July, 12 Scottish members attended the 55th European IFYE Conference in Wales. I believe a great week was enjoyed by all & the committee provided lots of activities and tours to keep everyone busy!

I am sure that many of you know Sally Young & know that she couldn’t be with us this weekend; we wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.

We have held a grand raffle this year for the first time, to try & raise funds for the association. It has been well supported & hopefully will go on to be an annual success. Our next event will be the AGM in March, we are having this on a Sunday afternoon to try & encourage as many people as possible to attend. It will be a social occasion, a chance to meet new & past exchangees & hear of their adventures.

On behalf of the Scottish YFA I’d like to thank Alison, Margaret, Sandra & the committee, for all their hard work & effort that’s gone in to organising another great reunion weekend.

8. Election of the Office Bearers for the 2014 Reunion Chairman: Mary Gemmell, Secretary: Caroline Robertson, Treasurer: Robin Blair were proposed. An invite was extended to all to The Menzies Hotel, Irvine for the weekend 31st October 2014 to 3rd November 2014. Another fun packed weekend being planned and promised by Mary. 9. Any Other Business An update from Mary Roberts on IFYE and the 2013 Wales conference was a great success. Future Reunions will be held as follows:- Germany 19th -26th July 2014 Scotland 15th -22nd August 2015 Estonia 2016 New attendees were encouraged to have a look at what was on offer. The world conference 2013 was happening this month in Thailand and some attendees were going to it from the weekend. Martyn Quayle thanked Alison and the committee for a wonderful weekend and everyone showed their sincere appreciation.

The England and Wales outgoing exchanges PowerPoint presentations were being shown over the weekend. Isobelle said she had photos form re-unions since 1985 if anyone wanted to have a look; they were available over the weekend. The collection at the Church service raised £287 for the Land Army. A final thank you to everyone or the weekend was made and to the retiring Chairman David for his 2 years in office. The meeting was declared closed at 12.30pm
