Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, If my calculations are right, we will have had a new pope for nearly a week. Back at the end of February, I made a pretty big prediction that big things were going to be happening in our Church in the coming months. Of course, that Monday, Cardinal O’Brien from the United Kingdom resigned from ministry for inappropriate behavior. That’s not what I was talking about.

I am so filled with hope that our new pontiff, whoever that might be, will be one who is a good teacher. I think that will be the number one quality I would want to see in this pope. Don’t misunderstand me. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI were good teachers in their own right; however, I still feel like they were a little bit too much “classroom” teachers. I honestly believe that some of the People of God ask for major changes in the Church teachings not because they think the teachings are old, but because they do not understand the reasons why the current and long-standing teachings exist (e.g. teachings on why priests can’t marry).

In any event, since I am writing this as the conclave for the papal election is about to begin (well in advance of a newly elected pope), and, although I am fairly certain my original statement to be true, I wish the new pope, the bishops, priests, deacons, brothers, sisters, lay ministers, and Catholics all over the world a very Blessed Holy Week.

I would like to reiterate my invitation for everyone to join us for the days of the Holy Triduum. Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper will begin at 7:30 PM. Good Friday’s Veneration of the Cross prayer service will take place at 3:00 PM. The grandest night of them all, the Easter Vigil, will start at 7:30 PM. If you have never experienced these most blessed nights, I tell you solemnly that you will be hooked and will be ready to come back next year. There is something about these “high-holy days” that promises us that we will NEVER be the same again.

May you always Glory in the Cross of Jesus Christ and be at peace with taking your part in carrying the cross God has offered you to take up. It’ll never compare to His, and as the “Footsteps” poem reminds us, Jesus is carrying us all the way.

Blessings in this week of ultimate grace, Fr. Michael Novick

Living Stewardship March 24, 2013 ~~ Palm Sunday “I tell you, Peter, before the cock crows this day, you will deny three times that you know me. “ (Luke 22:34) This Holy Week let us reflect upon how often we deny that we know Jesus by the ways that we decide to use our time, our talent and our treasure.

Every Mass remembers the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, but not as you would expect. Most of our day-to-day talk about remembering really means recalling or bringing up something that happened in the past. Our remembering at Mass is much, much different. It is not a matter of recall, but rather of

making present—here and now—what we remember. The Mass doesn’t just commemorate the Death and Resurrection of Jesus as a past event. The Mass makes this event present to us, right now, right here, in sign and sacrament. Our remembering in the Mass enables us to be present to him—right here and right now—as the self-sacrificing Lord who destroys death and restores life. Each one of the Eucharistic prayers has an anamnesis, or a special prayer of remembering. So, for example, the priest prays in Eucharistic Prayer IV: “Therefore, O Lord, as we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption, we remember Christ’s Death and his descent to the realm of the dead, we proclaim his Resurrection and his Ascension to your right hand. . . .” And in our prayer of remembering, we don’t just recall Jesus, we meet him as the dying and rising Lord who draws us into new life.

Religious Education Registration Planning for the 2013-2014 Religious Education year has begun. Registration information has been forwarded to the families of presently enrolled RE students. We happily welcome each year new families and students to our program. Classes for Kindergarten students (5 years old by September 1st) are held on Sunday mornings during the time of our 11:00 Parish Mass. Classes for grades 1-8 take place on Mondays, 5:30-6:45 p.m. Sacrament preparation for First Reconciliation and Communion begins in grade 1 and continues with reception of these sacraments in grade 2. It is a consecutive two year preparation. Confirmation preparation is a consecutive and concentrated program of instruction in grades 6, 7 and 8. Confirmation instruction assumes that students have continued religious education formation in grades 3, 4 and 5 following First Communion. We are hoping to welcome many more students to our program next year. We welcome any questions or concerns you may have. If more information is needed, please call the RE Office, 748-6090 x114. Information can also be forwarded through the mail. You are welcome to leave a voice mail message and we will return your call. Students from the Religious Education Program participate in many youth activities here at O’Toole including Altar Serving, Athletic Teams, Family Mass, Children’s Liturgy of the Word. We hope that if you are not yet registered for next school year’s RE program, you will definitely consider giving us a call. We look forward to welcoming you to our great program! KEEP FAITH ALIVE!

All are Welcome

Please join us Saturday evening, March 30th at 7:30 PM, for the Easter Vigil Mass, as we welcome into our faith our RCIA Candidates and Catechumens. Reaffirm your Baptismal call and re- profess your Faith along with them, reminding ourselves as to what these beautiful sacraments call us to be…to become disciples of Christ, working with the Holy Spirit to build up the Kingdom of God here today and reflect on the Heart of our Faith – The Eucharist. As the Catechumens and Candidates receive the three Sacraments of Initiation, we first witness the Sacrament of Baptism and we are reminded that Baptism is the gateway to Life in the Spirit, dying to sin and rising to new life, a “new life in Christ sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” (2 Cor 5:17). Revisit the tenants our faith as the Candidates make their Profession of Faith. As they are confirmed we reflect that the Sacrament of Confirmation is the basis for the increase in Divine Life, a closer union with Christ and a deeper indwelling of the Holy Spirit which we received in Baptism. As the Catechumens and Candidates receive Holy Eucharist for the first time we are reminded that at every Eucharist we receive Jesus – body, blood, soul and divinity. We reflect on the extraordinary gift of the Eucharist – both as representation of Christ’s death and resurrection and also as our spiritual food. We are called to thank God that such an overwhelmingly generous gift was given to us. Join us afterwards for a reception to welcome our newest Catholics; to share our faith, our hope and, as community, to restore Christ’s Church – the Body of Christ – that unity rooted in one Baptism, one faith and one Lord.

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Joy and Hope: the Church in today’s world This fifth of six short articles on the Second Vatican Council speaks to the longest document issued by the Council. The apostolic constitution Gaudium et spes addressed the reason Pope John XXIII called the Council: to change the relation between the Church and the world so that the Church’s

mission would be strengthened and the world come to know its Savior and be rescued from its sinfulness. How should the Church, now committed to dialogue with everyone, enter into a more evangelically productive relationship to a world marked by advanced technological achievements, spreading democracy, an integrating economic system and an increasing skepticism toward revealed religion? The apostolic constitution starts by identifying the Church with the joys and hopes as well as the grief and anxieties of the people of this age, especially with those who are poor or otherwise afflicted. In explaining who she is to the world, the Church hopes to enter into a dialogue that will explain the world to itself. While the Council was still meeting in Rome, Pope Paul VI went to the United Nations in New York, the first Pope to do so, and introduced himself to the world’s governmental representatives as “an expert in humanity.” At a new moment in humanity’s history, the human race and its history, the Council Fathers wrote, are coming together around permanent values and new discoveries. There is a new social order, with new psychological and moral habits. In places, religion is being marginalized as too rooted in a prior moment of history. At this moment, therefore, reflection about the Church and the world needs to be grounded in mutual conviction about the dignity of the human person, made in God’s image and likeness. Human dignity is perennially threatened by human sinfulness, and the Church calls everyone to conversion of life. Christ is the new Adam, the new man, the one who establishes a world order based on truth and freedom. Death and atheism threaten this new order, but they cannot destroy it nor the Church that proclaims and embodies it. Because Jesus is God, he brings us into the life of the Blessed Trinity; because Jesus is man, he transforms human activity into his instrument for making visible the Kingdom of God, even here and now. As God’s leaven in the world, the Church protects the “school of God’s love” that is the family. She works to strengthen marriage and respect for the human life born of it. The Church enters into dialogue with all cultures and is partner to the conversations about evolution, progress, economic and political life, peace and the international order. The document addresses each of these topics at some length. This very broad vision of the relationship between Church and world was institutionalized right after the Council with ministries for social justice and peace, for the protection of human life and dignity, for marriage and family life, for intellectual life and communications. The Holy See itself and most dioceses have institutionalized these concerns while shoring up the faith life of Catholics themselves in efforts to renew catechesis and the common life of the Church herself, especially through various lay movements. The Church, because of Gaudium et spes, has been on a fifty year dialogue with all the peoples and nations of the world. The conversation has sometimes been more acrimonious than those who set the course at the Second Vatican Council might have imagined or anticipated. But the course has held: the Church continuously finds new ways to introduce the whole world to its savior, Jesus Christ, the head of his body, the Church.

God bless you. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, OMI Archbishop of Chicago
