Protection From Evils
We are breathing in a new time in our Church since the election of Pope Francis nearly three weeks ago. We have all been watching and noting the example of humility, that he once showed as the Bishop of Buenos Aires, and that he has brought with him to the Throne of St. Peter. Back at his inaugural Mass on March 19th, Pope Francis’ homily gave us a little more insight as to how he thinks and into what we might expect to see from him in these coming days and years ahead. He said:
“The vocation of being a "protector", however, is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God's creatures and respecting the environment in which we live. It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about. It means caring for one another in our families: husbands and wives first protect one another, and then, as parents, they care for their children, and children themselves, in time, protect their parents. It means building sincere friendships in which we protect one another in trust, respect, and goodness. In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protection, and all of us are responsible for it. Be protectors of God's gifts!” (http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/19/world/europe/vatican-francis-homily/)
For many years now, ecology activists have been encouraging society to “go green.” Be better about recycling and use less of our natural resources. Waste less food. Have more of your regular bills sent to you electronically, where available, and pay those same bills online to save on postage and envelopes. These are just a few ways we come to be better stewards of God’s creation. But I wanted to focus a little more on the big picture of protecting people.
Jesus came to save us through his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. It’s why we come back week after week to pray and sing “Alleluia!” So, of course, that is Jesus’ gift to us, the gift of salvation. However, today’s day and age still has WAY too much violence around us. I think about the many ways my father was like St. Joseph in being the protector of his family. He took that vocation very seriously, as I take my vocation as protector of this community very seriously, too. As Pope Francis said above, “It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need… caring for one another in our families.” It’s about remembering that we are one big family around the world. It’s about treating others the way you want to be treated. Face it, if you don’t care for others while you can, who will be around to care for you when you need it the most?
Pope Francis’ example has revolved mostly around the marginalized of society. Not everyone is cut out for that type of ministry. Yet, in all we do, we are asked to rise with Christ. We are asked to sacrifice our very selves, and rise above obstacles – protecting others from sinful ways or any harm that may come their way.
Happy Easter!

Living Stewardship April 7, 2013 ~~ 2nd Sunday of Easter “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’” JOHN 20:21 Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. Just as Jesus sent the apostles out into the world to share His peace and Good News, so too, He sends us. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to be grateful and generous. We should look for opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and sisters not only within our local parish
boundaries, but outside of them as well. In giving, you will receive the peace of Christ.

When we celebrate Sunday Mass together, we fulfill a weighty responsibility that we have for the whole world. Saint Paul told the Corinthians, and this applies to us as well: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). We proclaim and we give witness to the Lord’s death. But to whom do we proclaim and to whom do we give witness?
No matter the size of the congregation or the grandeur (or simplicity) of the ritual, when we believers gather on Sunday to celebrate Mass, we offer the world witness to something that the world desperately needs. We speak to a world broken and divided by sin and death. We proclaim the power of the Lord’s death to heal our wounds and to forgive our sins.

Divine Mercy
On this Divine Mercy Sunday we hear, as we do every

Do I truly hear and really heed the words of God’s mercy that

THIS WEEK IN SLOT SCHOOL NEWS!!!! Why I Love St. Lawrence O’Toole School
Mrs. Skocz Sixth Grade Class
I love St. Lawrence O’Toole School because it feels more like a family than a school. Everyone can recognize everyone else. Even if you don’t know their name, you know their grade or you just know you have seen them before. The school provides a good education. The teachers always try to help everyone no matter what. To me, this helps me gain confidence in my future. Our school activities, from
science experiments to art, are always fun and help me to get hands-on learning and creativity. To me, that’s great! The sports are fun; especially running club, where you can run and talk with your friends. During pep rallies, everyone gets fired up and cheers on our teams. This school is full of enthusiasm, creativity, friends, and learning. And that is why I love St. Lawrence O’Toole School. Tava Oosterbaan
I love St. Lawrence O’Toole School because the students are very nice. The teachers and staff are nice, too. I also love St. Lawrence School because of church and religion. Lastly, I love St. Lawrence O’Toole because of the fun electives.
I love how the students and staff welcomed me when I first came here. They were so nice, especially Mrs. Hofkamp. They all are so nice. I love church and religion because my old school was public so we couldn’t have religion or church. So now I love learning about religion and going to mass every week. I also love how each class hosts church every week. I love electives because the students can talk and work together. Another reason I love electives is because we switch every quarter and we are with different teachers, which is awesome! I think all of these things at St. Lawrence O’Toole are splendid.
In conclusion, I love St. Lawrence O’Toole School because the students, the teachers, and staff are nice. Another reason is we have church every week and we learn about religion. Lastly, electives are fun. I think all of these are spectacular. Cindy Kistner.
I love St. Lawrence O’Toole School because of the academic achievements. It is a Blue Ribbon School. St. Lawrence O’Toole School is a safe environment for students. While we are at school, we feel safe. We also have lots of fun activities, such as the Fun Fair and Olympic Day. All of the students really enjoy these fun activities because they are breaks away from all the hard work we do. The teachers push us to work hard and do our best. St. Lawrence O’Toole School has wonderful teachers that give us all their attention, and they are always respectful of our opinions. The teachers always make sure the students are working hard. The students are taught to look for ways to help others; we bring food every Wednesday for the poor. St. Lawrence O’Toole School really is one of the best schools. Dion Sallis

PRO-LIFE NEWS Seeking the Kingdom of God Transcends Politics By Denise Hunnell, M.D. Archbishop Chaput recently drew both praise and criticism when he asserted that we are Catholics before we are Americans. In an interview with the Catholic News Service he said:
We’re Catholics before we’re Democrats. We’re Catholics before we’re Republicans. We’re even Catholics before we’re Americans because we know that God has a demand on us prior to any government demand on us. And this has been the story of the martyrs through the centuries.
Many of those who were angered by his remarks considered them unpatriotic, yet Archbishop Chaput was really rephrasing the words of Christ himself. We are to be in the world but not of the world. Our hearts, our minds, our souls are focused not on this life, but the next.

Religious Education Registration Planning for the 2013-2014 Religious Education year has begun. Registration information has been forwarded to the families of presently enrolled RE students. We happily welcome each year new families and students to our program. Classes for Kindergarten students (5 years old by September 1st) are held on Sunday mornings during the time of our 11:00 Parish Mass. Classes for grades 1-8 take place on Mondays, 5:30-6:45 p.m. Sacrament preparation for First Reconciliation and Communion begins in grade 1 and continues with reception of these sacraments in grade 2. It is a consecutive two year preparation. Confirmation preparation is a consecutive and concentrated program of instruction in grades 6, 7 and 8. Confirmation instruction assumes that students have continued religious education formation in grades 3, 4 and 5 following First Communion. We are hoping to welcome many more students to our program next year. We welcome any questions or concerns you may have. If more information is needed, please call the RE Office, 748-6090 x114. Information can also be forwarded through the mail. You are welcome to leave a voice mail message and we will return your call. Students from the Religious Education Program participate in many youth activities here at O’Toole including Altar Serving, Athletic Teams, Family Mass, Children’s Liturgy of the Word. We hope that if you are not yet registered for next school year’s RE program, you will definitely consider giving us a call. We look forward to welcoming you to our great program! KEEP FAITH ALIVE!
