Roomas… I believe it to be kind of funny and, yet, sad at times, that people are so into jumping to conclusions. Before the talent show, I had to squelch rumors about what I would be performing. Many of the children were convinced they knew my act. They thought I was going to be playing guitar. Then they saw the program and noted that I would be singing. Still, they didn’t know what I would be singing. They asked and asked. I had to tell them that it was going to remain a secret for everyone to hear at once. I can (and need to) mention that since I put that memorandum in the TREFOIL a week ago, rumors began to fly immediately about the contents of the meeting. It’s absolutely amazing how damaging rumors can be. That was why the same weekend I put the memo in the TREFOIL, I also had to announce to those who attended Mass that they should READ the memo and show up at the meeting on May 9th in the Church. I had to unfortunately ask people not to READ INTO the memo – no reading between the lines. The worst rumor that spread (and IS NOT true) was that the school would be closing after the 2013-14 school year. I am not that good about keeping that sort of ugliness to myself. If it were true, you would have known back in December 2012. So I repeat,

OUR SCHOOL IS NOT ON ANY SORT OF LIST TO CLOSE. Bishop Perry has assured me of that. As for the meeting on May 9th, I still ask that EVERYONE shows up and hear for themselves what is on the agenda for the meeting. The point of calling this meeting is so that everyone listens to each other, to what is on the agenda and to the concerns and comments that will be made during the meeting. Please be there if at all possible. Mark your calendars. We will start at 7:00 PM with a short prayer, then get into the meat of meeting, and finish with a blessing at 8:00 PM. Stay on track everyone. I need you. O’Toole needs you. Rev. Michael Novick Pastor

Living Stewardship April 28, 2013 ~~ 5th Sunday of Easter “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." JOHN 13:34 Jesus showed His love by healing the sick, giving hope to the hopeless and ultimately dying on the cross for us. We, too, are called to show our love for one another. carry on the work and the love of Jesus. When you give to the ACA you give love to someone in need.

No one wants to be summarily dispatched or just sent away. “Go. Move on.” It’s not a nice message. Strangely, it’s the last message we get at Sunday Mass. In all the different forms, we are told to go and to move on. “Go forth, the Mass is ended. Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Go in peace.” Not

only is that the final message of the Mass, for us it’s also a welcomed message. We want to go and we need to move on and out. The Dismissal at the end of Mass is critical. We are entrusted with a mission and a high purpose. We are told to move to the world from which we originally came. We have heard God’s Word and shared in the self-sacrificing love of Jesus who has been our Bread of Life. Now, we have a purpose and responsibility. Our mission is to bring and live out what we have celebrated in the Mass. So, we go not only in peace but with joy, determination, and hope.

O’TOOLE SCHOOL NEWS Why I Love St. Lawrence O’Toole School

Mrs. Hanifin’s Seventh Grade

My name is Miya Fields and I have been a student at O’Toole for seven years. I enjoy many things about my school. My favorite teachers are Mrs. Milazzo, the computer teacher, and Mrs. Hennessy, my fourth grade teacher. They are funny, trustworthy, and my role models. We have a lot of technology at O’Toole. The computer lab has iPads, many computers, and even cameras. In my seventh grade class we use a Smartboard instead of a chalkboard. We use it to look up many different things in class and copy down notes. Sometimes we go in front of the

class and participate using the Smartboard. Another reason I enjoy O’Toole is because I get to see my friends. We do many projects in class together.

We help out by delivering lunches together. My friends and I also enjoy after school events and playing sports together.

Our school has many religious activities. As a school, we go to mass every Wednesday morning. In religion class we learn the good news of God and about being born to eternal life. My class prays in the morning and before lunch to bless our day and our food. These are just some of the reasons I enjoy my school. Going to St. Lawrence O’Toole School brightens my future.

My name is Blake Millon and this is my second year at St. Lawrence O’Toole School. One thing I like about St. Lawrence is the teachers. The teachers are caring, helpful, and easy to get along with. They are caring because they want the students to be successful. They are helpful because they help us to do our best to get good grades. They are easy to get along with because they are kind.

Another thing I like about St. Lawrence is the science experiments. The science experiments are fun because we get involved in the activities. When we do the experiments we work with one another and learn at the same time.

I also like that at St. Lawrence O'Toole School we pray at the beginning of the day. A lot of other schools don’t get to pray to start their day off. I like when we pray because it gives us the opportunity to talk to God and hope for a good day.

My name is Mackenzie Simon; I am a seventh grader and I have been going to St. Lawrence O’Toole School for seven years. O’Toole is a Catholic community and the whole school goes to church every Wednesday. My parents send me here because they like the fact we are a very religious school. They also like the after care program and that grades are posted on-line. I like coming to St. Lawrence O’Toole School because the people are cool and fun. They include you in the things they do inside and outside of school. I also like the classes my school has to offer. O’Toole keeps me on top of my classes. The teachers always have time to help you when you really need it. I also like band, choir, and the different sports you can be in. I play on the volleyball team. I like being a part of a team because you know your teammates will always support you. These are just a few reasons I like attending St. Lawrence O’Toole School.

The St. Lawrence O’Toole Book Club’s next selection is Wonder by R.J Palacio. Wonder is a fictional story about a ten year-old boy with a very different looking face, the result of a chromosomal abnormality and an illness. The novel describes his journey from the nest of homeschooling to the wilds of middle school. Our book discussion is set for Monday, May 13, 3:00 PM, in the SCHOOL, CLASSROOM ROOM S4. All are welcome to join us, and please bring a friend.

PRO-LIFE NEWS ~~ Please attend the Witness and Prayer Vigil, this Saturday, May 4, 10:00 AM—12:00 PM, along the public sidewalk extending from 14470 LaGrange Road, Orland Park. Please

consider attending this prayer vigil, praying and protesting because abortion providers have admitted that when people are praying and witnessing in front of the abortion mill, 30% of their

appointments don’t show up. Many women have admitted that if someone would have been praying outside the mill on the day they had their abortion, they would never have aborted. It is time to go to an abortion mill to be a witness and pray that babies will be saved. If not us, who? If not now,

when? Please join us if you can, even if only for part of the time.

Religious Education Registration The children of Religious Education are about to celebrate the end of a wonderful year. We are very grateful to our teachers for all their help and guidance in helping us grow stronger in our Catholic faith. We hope to be able to welcome many new friends next year. We promise you a strong, prayerful, Jesus-filled faith experience. Classes for Pre-K and Kindergarten students (4 or 5 years old by September 1st) are held on Sunday mornings during the time of our 11:00 Parish Mass. Classes for grades 1-8 take place on Mondays, 5:30-6:45 p.m. Sacrament preparation for First Reconciliation and Communion begins in grade 1 and continues with reception of these sacraments in grade 2. It is a consecutive two year preparation. Confirmation preparation is a consecutive and concentrated program of instruction in grades 6, 7 and 8. Confirmation instruction assumes that students have continued religious education formation in grades 3, 4 and 5 following First Communion. We welcome any questions or concerns you may have. If more information is needed, please call the RE Office, 748-6090 x114. Information can also be forwarded through the mail. You are welcome to leave a voice mail message and we will return your call. Students from the Religious Education Program participate in many youth activities here at O’Toole including Altar Serving, Athletic Teams, Family Mass, Children’s Liturgy of the Word. We hope that if you are not yet registered for next school year’s RE program, you will definitely consider giving us a call. We look forward to welcoming you to our great program! KEEP FAITH ALIVE!

46 CHURCH HILL ROAD

NEWTON, CT 06470 203-426-1014

FAX: 203-426-6222 Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On behalf of our community and parish, we extend our gratitude to each of you who remembered us in prayer following the events of December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School. We quickly realized the universality of the Church by the outpouring of support and concern that was shown to us by so many in our faith communities. The cards and letters from staff and students in Catholic elementary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities reminded us of the faith to which we are called to witness through the tradition of Catholic education. No less important were the number of cards from parish religious education programs, especially the sacramental programs. We were also contacted by many Catholic organizations and groups on both the local and national levels. The list of parishes, Catholic-based groups, and dioceses who contacted us is an overwhelming one. We are also very appreciative of the number of donations sent to us to assist our parish in our continuing ministry to the community, to help pay the expenses of the victims’ funerals, to support counseling programs, to provide direct aid to the families, and so on. Your generosity reminded us that we are not alone during this very sad and challenging time. We also want to thank our brother priests, deacons, and religious sisters and brothers for their letter of support and encouragement. Spiritual bouquets, Mass cards, hours of adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, and remembrances by many prayer groups have lifted our spirits knowing that our intentions are ever before the Lord. We also received a number of rosaries, prayer shawls, religious works of art, memorial vestments, reliquaries, books focusing on grief and healing, original and recorded religious CDs, and a variety of poems, spiritual reflections, and meditations to help guide us in providing comfort and support. While we tried to acknowledge every letter and gift sent to us, it became an overwhelming task, so please accept this letter as a thank to every person who remembered us in prayer during the days immediately following the tragedy to these days of recovery and healing. We know that the road ahead of us will be a long one, but we are given great hope by the outpouring of generosity and love shown to us. We are truly blessed by your many acts of faith and kindness. Please know that you continue to be in our prayers of gratitude for the goodness you have demonstrated to us in so many ways.

God bless,

Monsignor Robert Weiss, Pastor Saint Rose of Lima Parish Newtown, Connecticut
