Parish Prose March 2017 FROM THE PASTORS DESK This month we continue our series on the various ministry teams of the church. Each month we feature one team, describe what they do, their function, and who is on the team. This months fo- cus is on Committee on Worship. The Worship ministry team is one of two new committees in our church. This team brought together different coordinators of our various ministries into a committee that works directly with the pastor to make sure that worship goes off without a hitch. If things are running smooth on Sunday morning you can thank the Committee on Worship members. Christmas and Easter receive much of our attention and the Worship ministry team usually meets several months before these holidays to make sure that everything is running smoothly. We are also open to unique and creative ideas to enhance our worship experience. As the pastor, I have pledged to the Worship Committee, my sermon series schedule. This will allow the Worship Team to come up with creative ideas that focus around the common theme for that month or time period. Another important aspect of the Committee on Worship is to coordinate all of the volunteers involved in our Sunday service; ushers, greeters, acolytes, coffee host, and communion helpers all work together to make sure that your experience is one focused on God and not on the mi- nute details of worship planning. Since our Committee is in its second year of existence I want to personally thank Marlene Huston for steering us last year as our first chairperson of the Committee on Worship. Members of the Committee on Worship are the following: Jan Scripter, Lila Doll, and Deb Nichol (their terms expire in 2017); Louise Dutton (who is also our chair), Linda Johnson, and Judy Banghart (terms expire in 2018); Jan Zitterkoph, Bev Leeling, and Tracy Rahmig (terms expire in 2019). The following coordinators or leaders are also on the Worship Commit- tee due to their positions in the church. They are Greeters Coordinator – Eleanor Shimek; Coffee Hour Coordinator – Connie Russel; Usher / Acolyte Coordinator – Maria Ross and Cherie Loose; Communion Steward – Bev Greenwalt; Lay Leader – Shirley Potter; Music Direc- tor – Lindsey Ferguson; and Bell Choir Director – Meredyth Gentry. FROM THE PASTORS DESK

This month we continue our series on the various ministry teams of the church. Each month we feature one team, describe what they do, their function, and who is on the team. This month’s fo-cus is on Committee on Worship.

The Worship ministry team is one of two new committees in our church. This team brought together different coordinators of our various ministries into a committee that works directly with

the pastor to make sure that worship goes off without a hitch. Sermon Series

Lent is upon us and we are brought into a new series called Judges – Broken People / Faithful God. In the time before King David and Solomon, Israel was ruled by charismatic leaders known to us as judges. These individuals were not lawman and women but charismatic leaders that the Hebrew people ral-lied around during times of trouble. The stories of these Judges are fasci-nating. Not all judges were good people, however; and we will find out in these Lenten lessons.

JUDGES – BROKEN PEOPLE / FAITHFUL GOD March 5th: “Ehud – Lefty Vs. Hefty” based on Judges 3.12-30

March 12th: “Arrogance Vs. Prophetess / Lobotomist” based Judges 4.1-9 March 19th: “Midian Vs. Gideon” based Judges 6.1-32

March 26th: “Abimelech Vs. Everyone” based Judges 9.1-6, 50-56 April 2nd: “Jephthah Vs. Jephthah” based on Judges 10.6-8; 11.29-40 April 9th: “Samson – Haughty Vs. Humility” based on Judges 16.4-22

April 16th will be our Easter message called “Who Are You Looking For?” Jesus asked this ques-tion of Mary as she was not only searching for the Messiah but also in mourning after the events of Je-sus’ death. On April 23rd we start our summer sermon series called Route 66. This is a beautiful lesson about the journey of life. All past sermons can be accessed on-line at www.geringumc.org and clicking on the sermons tab.

Children's Offering Our children have adopted a mission project during the Children’s Sermon. Godson and his wife, Felicia Akushie is a pastor in the Meth-odist Church in Ghana. Our pastor worked with Godson and his family while serving at his previous appointment. Ghana is a former British colony and continues and provides an education to his citizens using the same British model. This means that education is not free. All children must learn through school fees and/or scholarships. Godson and Felicia have three children and our children’s offering goes di-rectly to their school fees. Last year the cost to send three children to school in Ghana was about $500 per semester. The children that we are sponsoring are: Thrine Naa Kowah Akushie (female), age 10, grade 5; Gedual Anwra Agowah Akushie (female); age 9, grade 4; and Godson Nii Amukwei Akushie, Jr., age 5, grade Kindergarten 2.

Youth Trip to Mexico Youth Trip to Mexico Plans for our youth group trip to Mexico are going well. We will be leaving on Sunday, May 28th after a commission service in church. It will take us two days to travel to Weslaco, Texas where we will be staying at the First Presbyterian Church. On Tuesday, May 30th, Fe-lix will start us in on building a casita in a section of Nueva Progresso in Mexico. After several days of work the youth head to South Padre Island for some R&R then return home arriving safely on Sunday, June 4th. We still have room on the van for you. We are finalizing the costs of the trip but through fund-raising efforts coordinated by the Committee on Outreach & Mission it should not be cost prohibi-tive. We are also committed to making sure that if you want to be in mission to the people of Mexico scholarships are available. If you do not have your pass-port you do need to get one before we leave on May 28th. Please remember that it takes six weeks to process the paperwork. If you have questions, please visit with the pastor. On March 19th the Committee on Outreach & Mission will be working with our youth group to provide a Potato Bar fund-raiser for our trip. The event will take place immedi-ately after the service. If you would like to help or would like to donate items for the din-ner, please visit with Bruce Yost or the pastor.
