The protests were not totally surprising in light of events that took place last week in Minneapolis. The taking of a life is always a tragedy. However there were moments of hope in the midst of the anger. Our family lived in Flint, Michigan from 1983-1986 and we know what it feels like to experience mistrust and feelings of exclusion based not on who we were but instead on what we were. 90% of the residents of Flint at that time were African American so we represented a small part of the 10% of the minority. As I watched the news I was brought to tears when I saw the white sheriff of Genesee County (the county in which Flint is located) removing his helmet and baton and reaching out to the pro- testers as he and his deputies walked together to protest the taking of black lives by police. In a variety of locations we saw the pow- er of what can happen when we stand up with each other in unity against racism. This article is not intended to be political in any way. It is intended to draw attention to the reality of racism in our daily lives. We cannot pretend that it does not exist. We are created with differences – in color of skin, texture of hair, shape of our eyes, pitch of our voices. We cannot honestly say that we are color blindwhen talking about our differences. It is important that we remem- ber that God created us with differences and it takes acknowledging those differences and celebrating them to come together in uni- ty. I would like to share a quote from my daily devotional which is helpful to me and I pray it gives you something to think about: Choosing to see people as holy reflections of the God who made them, to be loved, cherished, and encouraged, will change every- thing when it comes to how we interact with them. I like to be reminded that it is a CHOICE. I choose to speak up when I see injustices. I pray that it will become a part of the DNA of every Christian to see people with their differences and love them. I also pray that we become a part of the solution – and remain a part of the problem. My challenge to each of you is this – In what ways do you see yourself – and our congregation – being the Church God created us to be – joining in speaking against injustice and ha- tred? I close with a familiar quote from the book of Micah – What does the Lord require of you, O mortal but to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?With love for each of you from God our Father. Food Bank of Siouxland Piece Corps Call Committee Benevolence for June Kid’s Korner Calendar

I have watched (as I am sure many others have) the news coverage of the rioting in cities across

America this past weekend. The protests were not totally surprising in light of events that took place

last week in Minneapolis. The taking of a life is always a tragedy. However there were moments of

hope in the midst of the anger. Our family lived in Flint, Michigan from 1983-1986 and we know what

it feels like to experience mistrust and feelings of exclusion based not on who we were but instead on

what we were. 90% of the residents of Flint at that time were African American so we represented a

small part of the 10% of the minority. As I watched the news I was brought to tears when I saw the

white sheriff of Genesee County (the county in which Flint is located) removing his helmet and baton and reaching out to the pro-

testers as he and his deputies walked together to protest the taking of black lives by police. In a variety of locations we saw the pow-

er of what can happen when we stand up with each other in unity against racism.

This article is not intended to be political in any way. It is intended to draw attention to the reality of racism in our daily lives.

We cannot pretend that it does not exist. We are created with differences – in color of skin, texture of hair, shape of our eyes, pitch

of our voices. We cannot honestly say that we are “color blind” when talking about our differences. It is important that we remem-

ber that God created us with differences and it takes acknowledging those differences and celebrating them to come together in uni-

ty.

I would like to share a quote from my daily devotional which is helpful to me and I pray it gives you something to think about:

“Choosing to see people as holy reflections of the God who made them, to be loved, cherished, and encouraged, will change every-

thing when it comes to how we interact with them.” I like to be reminded that it is a CHOICE. I choose to speak up when I see

injustices. I pray that it will become a part of the DNA of every Christian to see people with their differences and love them. I also

pray that we become a part of the solution – and remain a part of the problem. My challenge to each of you is this – In what ways

do you see yourself – and our congregation – being the Church God created us to be – joining in speaking against injustice and ha-

tred? I close with a familiar quote from the book of Micah – “What does the Lord require of you, O mortal but to do justice, love

kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” With love for each of you from God our Father. Pastor Jane

South Sioux City High School Blake is graduating from South

Sioux City Senior High School. He is planning on going to school in the fall at the University of Nebraska down in Lincoln. He wants to become a pale-ontologist and has wanted to become one since he was about 2 or 3 years old!

East High

School. He played basketball, golf and tennis during his years at East. He had a great senior year on varsity golf and earned a few medals! He was really looking for-ward to his last season of varsity tennis, but unfortunately the sea-son was canceled. No tennis meant mowing a few extra lawns with his dad :) Noah is planning to attend the University of South Dakota in the fall, and continue to play golf and improve his game.

South Sioux City High School She isn't sure what she's going to

do now that she is a high school grad-uate. She is leaning towards cosmetol-ogy school. She is also interested in photography. For now she is working at Siouxland Bank and trying to figure out her future. No matter what she does or where she goes we know she will do well. We're very proud of all she has accomplished so far!!

West High Abby has been in many activities

in high school from dance and cheer to softball and tennis. She works at a local veterinary office, seasonally at Cone Park, and is a lifeguard for both the City and Siouxland Y. She is a member of the FFA. Abby will be at-tending Iowa State to pursue an ani-mal science degree and then apply for veterinary school.

Even though we are not able to pass the collection plate each week, your offerings are

still important to the church as bills and expenses continue during these times. You may send

your contributions to Augustana Lutheran Church, 600 Court St, Sioux City, IA 51101 or bring

to the office between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday – Friday.

If you are interested in the Simple Giving program, more information and forms are availa-

ble in the church office.

You may also set up weekly or monthly bill pay though your bank. Once you have that set

up, you can direct your bank to mail the check to the church to be processed with the offer-

ings.

Thank you!

Did you know that for every dollar that is

donated to the Food Bank of Siouxland,

they are able to donate 13 pounds of food.

As a church, we donated 28,925 pound of

food.

“On behalf of the Food Bank of Siouxland,

I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you for

your support. Your recent gift will go so far

in ensuring that those in need are able to

access food. Your generosity will provide

the Siouxland Community with an additional

28,925 pounds of food! You are saving

lives and we can’t thank you enough for

your kindness!”

Piece Corps The Piece Corps (quilters) of Augustana Lutheran

Church have made 1,248 quilts since November 2005

when record keeping began. This year we made 60. The

Piece Corps meets on the second and fourth Mondays of

each month from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Donations of fabric

and sheets are always appreciated.

Current members of the Piece Corps are Sue Levay,

Darla Williams, Linda Lindgren, Jean Midland and Marge

Swanson. We hope church mem-

bers will join us in this ministry.

You don’t have to sit at a sewing

machine. You can design quilts,

cut squares and pin quilts.

PLEASE JOIN US.

The Church Council approved our Ministry Site Profile (MSP) at their May meeting, then the MSP was submitted to the ELCA via their website. Dur-ing the last week of May our MSP was reviewed by our ELCA/Western Iowa Synod representative, Pastor Mike Kroona. Our MSP is now “Live” within their system. Now, we await to hear from potential “Call” candi-dates. This process is moving along smoothly.
