On February 21st, the Pabineau First Nation held an election casting their ballots for a chief and two councillors. Chief David Peter-Paul was re-elected for his sixth term, while Councillor Terrence (Terry) Richardson was re-elected for his second. Christopher Turkenkopf was this year’s newly elected band councillor replacing Edmond Richardson. The three elected band members ran as a team receiving the majority votes.
David Peter-Paul has been the chief of Pabineau First Nation since 2004. “Our small First Nation community has leaped forward in many ways over the last ten years,” says David. “Pabineau is now recognized as one of the most progressive and well-managed small First Nation
3
communities in Atlantic Canada.” Being his sixth term, David will hold the office as chief for a total of twelve years. Commenting to the community after the election Chief David stated, “Your continued support in the weeks, months, and years ahead will assist Terry, Chris, and I in delivering on our commitment to make the Pabineau First Nation a better place for you and for those who will one day live in the footprint that this generation will leave them.”
Re-elected Councillor Terry Richardson, who previously served in the military for 25 years for the Canadian Armed Forces retired in 2008, and is presently not only a member of the 2nd North Shore Regiment in the reserves but also is a coroner for the province of New Brunswick. He was asked by Chief David to run in the 2012 election. Terry ran for council, was elected, and again holds office for another two years. Prior to this year’s election, Terry stated to the Pabineau community, “If elected in Febuary 2014, I promise to work with the elected Chief and Council to advance the Pabineau First Nation community and seize every opportunity we can for you and your families.” As well Terry is the Mik'Maq Benefits Manager for Trevali mining and is performing the role of councillor collecting no salary. "I am fortunate that Trevali mining has enabled me to serve my community, by not collecting a salary I am able to create capacity in Pabineau". Terry later stated to the community after the election, “I am humbled and honored to be able to serve my community for a second term. With the leadership of Chief David Peter-Paul and the work ethic of our newly elected councillor Chris Turkenkopf, I see more prosperity and development coming to Pabineau. Chief and council of Pabineau look forward to forging business opportunities with local communities and bringing some prosperity back to the Northern part of the province".
Newly elected Councillor Chris Turkenkopf also previously served in the military for both the Canadian Forces and U.S. Army. After a long stretch away from home Chris contacted Chief David about returning to Pabineau, and in 2008 he began working with the band’s administration, and has been involved since. Chris stated that prior to returning home Chief David explained to him that, “my experiences and training would benefit the community and he expressed his willingness to provide an avenue for me to do just that.” So Chris collaborated with Chief David Peter-Paul and Terry Richardson in this year’s election. Prior to the election Chris explained to the community that, “from my experiences and training, I can endure the rigors of politics and stand firm in the face of its dynamic mood swings.” After the ballots were counted and Chris became councillor he thanked the voting members for their support and said, “It is an absolute honour to represent the people of Pabineau First Nation.”
Running for chief this election was James Richardson who received 45 votes; Nicky Prisk received 8, while Chief David won with 112. For council was Terry who received 131 votes, Chris received 111 and Robert (Bobby) Kryszko received 63.
Pabineau will return to the polling station in 2016.
