We are ResourceSmart!! By Sophie Dunn. One usual sunny day in June a group of students, including me, went around the Malmsbury Primary School buildings to check on our energy use. We were looking to see the brightness of the lights, how hot or cold the buildings were, if the lights and appliances get turned off and if there were any air leaks. We discovered that… In the classrooms we need to work on keeping them an appropriate temperature (otherwise we’re all using too much electricity) and to turn off the heaters when they’re not in use. We also need to remember to turn off the lights, interactive whiteboards and robots. We have blinds on the northern and western windows and the southern windows can let natural light in. We don’t have air-conditioning, but our windows can be opened to let organic air flow in or to cross ventilate! There is draught proofing as well! YAY!!! Now to… The office buildings! Oh no! Too bright! The kitchen lights are way too luminous but the library lights are too dull! Brrr- The office building sure is chilly and draughty. We really need to practise turn-ing off everything in the library and turning off the main office’s shredder, heater and printer, also the ginormous water bottles. We are doing better at remembering to turn off the library’s appliances. Good job so far!!! Ok, here’s the fun bit! We’re up to the music, art and OSHC rooms! The lights are not the most effi-cient types but the windows and doors all have draught proofing and we can let natural light and air flow in. Great job Paul, Louise and Joseph! What can be improved is definitely putting noticea-ble signs up to remind everyone which temperature to keep the room to, and to turn the lights and appliances off when not in use. Also, we need to seal air leaks and draughts and replace the old lights with new efficient LED lights. We’re doing great though and will keep up the good work!

DAFFODIL FESTIVAL ROYALTY!!

I feel honoured to be one of the Princes and I feel nervous about the Daffodil Parade. On Thursday, today, we are doing the Royal opening of the Art prize, Art Photography prize and Rotary Youth Art Awards at the Mechanics Institute Kyneton, 7:30pm. On Saturday we are going to visit the streets of Mollison, High and Piper with the King and Queen. We will be at the Ferret races at 10:30am to hand out daffodils to shoppers and greet shop owners. There is a Prince and Princess from Tylden PS too. I feel excited to be one of the Princesses. On Friday 13th Of September we are getting pulled out of school to do royal business. We are going to Lady brooks kinder at 9:30am then we are going to Mair st daycare and then Bupa Kyneton Community Aged Care.

Daffodil parade Sunday 15th. Meet at the Kyneton Showgrounds at 12pm.

Our message is celebrating the sparkle of

spring time– the blossoms on the trees and the wonderful daffodils.

So dress sparkly, green & yellow, wear flowery head dresses and carry blossoms.

Malmsbury PS OSHC!

Hi Everyone,

Spring has sprung and we spent the entire day outside on Tuesday. We even had our fruit snack outside watching the kids against dads impromptu footy game. Trees were climbed, bubbles were blown and we all enjoyed the sunshine well into the afternoon. The OSHC kids have been tired this week (it’s that time in the term) and have enjoyed mak-ing beds and relaxing on the couch with some quiet activities. Next Wednesday (11th Sep-tember) we invite Year 1 students and families to join us in OSHC from 3:30-4:00 for a fruit snack and a play.

Maths in Grade 1/2. In Numeracy we have been making 2D and 3D shapes with Claire! This week we have been hunting for shapes in our environment, taking pictures and noting down different shapes around us. We made 3D shapes using playdough and match sticks as well as monster 3D monsters. We will be labelling the edges, vertices and faces of these shapes next week. Can you search for shapes at home? Do you cut your toast into triangles or rectangles?

Reading in Grade P/1. This week in Prep/ones, we have been working on

identifying character traits of characters in our stories,

this will lead into ‘compare and contrast’ next week.

We read ‘The Very Brave Bear’ by Nick Bland and

brainstormed the different character traits the Bear

and Boris Buffalo. Students then had to come up with

character traits about themselves and came up with

some fantastic examples like honest, brave, strong,

smart, funny, resilient, angelic and helpful.

Identifying character traits paired beautifully with our

new powerful writing strategy, ‘show not tell’. This

strategy uses words or phrases that describe a topic

instead of stating what it is. We use descriptive words

to ‘show’ instead of telling what it is. We came up with

our own ‘show not tell’ which we have displayed up on

our ‘powerful writing strategy’ wall.
