Dear Parents

A big thank you to Monique Gerretzen, Els Buesink, Rosalie van Mierlo and Kina Stellema for organising the multitude of wonderful Sinterklaas events during these past few weeks. No sooner have we waved goodbye to Sinterklaas than we are making preparations for the arrival of Santa Claus. The Christmas tree in the Glass House is beautifully decorated and ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ is reverberating around the Primary School.

This continues to be a very busy time for learning and a number of educational visits are still taking place. Last week not even the snow could prevent our Year 6 children from visiting the Gemeente Museum and this week the Year 4 children have all visited the Leiden Museum. Our Reception children went on a shopping trip to Waldeck so that they could buy the food for their picnic. Having bought the food, the children spent Wednesday morning preparing a veritable feast which they shared with some of their parents. I must admit, I was not only impressed with their culinary skills, but also very proud of their impeccable manners.

Today we had our Christmas Assembly where we were entertained by the Choir and String Ensemble who enhanced the Christmas mood when together they performed ‘Winter Wonderland’ followed by the whole school singing ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’.

Christmas is a time for giving and thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves. Our Golden rule ‘Be Kind and Helpful’ has certainly been evidenced by the response to the Shoebox charity. Thank you to Cora Munnick for organising the appeal in such a short space of time. The result of her efforts and your generosity is that a number of children who have no family will at least have a gift to open this Christmas.

Please remember school finishes for the holidays on Wednesday, 19 December at the normal time of 12:30. Monday, 7 January is a Professional Development Day for the whole staff. In the morning we will join with Secondary colleagues to consider ‘Enquiry Based Learning’ and in the afternoon we will be ‘Developing Learning in the IPC’. This means that the first day back for the children will be Tuesday, 8 January.

I hope you have an enjoyable, relaxing and safe festive season, I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Kevin Rae - Primary Principal

Mother Tongue News

Lost and found will be on display on from 17 - 19 December. Tables with all found articles can be located on the playground by the covered area, closest to the Reception classrooms.

Dear Parents,Knowledge to Share: Sometimes children prefer to respond and use their strongest school/majority language rather than their Mother Tongue at home. Rather than developing pressure by forcing or imposing the Mother Tongue as a communication language, it is better to gently persuade children to use their Mother Tongue through other ways. Keep talking, questioning or responding to your child in your Mother Tongue even if they reply back using English. This will ensure the continuity of the Mother Tongue at a receptive (understanding) level and will enable them to build on it to develop their Mother Tongue further once they are more motivated later on. You can create opportunities to communicate in your Mother Tongue at a privileged time: play time with a parent or having a chat during a nature walk, story time before bed, board games with the family, Skype conversation with grand-parents. Renewing of the Mother Tongue resources/materials at home is also crucial for motivation and interest. Holiday and home visits are great opportunities to come back with new books of all kind at your child correct level of reading, new CDs, new games in your Mother Tongue for the computer, new board game, etc. If you are not visiting your home country during the holiday you can ask the family to send these as gift for national/home celebrations like Eid, Christmas, Diwali, New Year…etc or just birthdays. A subscription to a magazine whether it is fiction or nonfiction is always good and your child will wait for its arrival each week/month. Music, fashion or football will also do!

Mother Tongue within the curriculumAfter the holiday the y4-6 children will choose a song, poem or play in their Mother Tongue. After a few weeks rehearsing the children will elect one group per class to perform during our Mother Tongue assembly on the 22 February to celebrate the International Mother Language day on the 21 February. Parents of selected performers will be welcome to attend this assembly.

Mother Tongue after school-Reminder: Make up lesson for both Dutch groups on 13 February and 14 February. German US on 14 February.

I wish you all a lovely break with quality family time.

Kind regards,Pascale Hertay, Deputy Head

Primary NewsIPC Art and Artists Topic Year 3In IPC, the children in Year 3 designed a collage of images representing themselves. They collected pictures, paintings, photographs and drawings which linked to themselves; family photos, hobbies, favourites, sports, etc. All collages are up on display in the Year 3 corridor. We also looked at Picasso’s guitar collages and the children were inspired to make their own work in that style. Feel free to come and have a look!

IPC Bears Topic Pre-Reception and Reception Reception and Pre-Reception children had a busy week planning and preparing a Teddy Bears Picnic as our exit point for our ‘Bears’ theme. We discussed what we would like to eat and then wrote shopping lists together. We then set off on Monday to shop for our ingredients at C1000, along with an army of parent helpers. We braved the elements but were not deterred by the wind, rain and hail!Back in the classroom we spent much of Tuesday and Wednesday preparing food for the picnic. This included making sandwiches, fruit salad and a variety of biscuits and cakes. We also wrote invitations to our mummies and daddies and teddies to join us for the picnic. On Wednesday we enjoyed eating the fruits of our labour and we also sang some ‘Bear’ songs together. Our thanks go out to all the wonderful parent volunteers who came shopping with us and also to the everyone who joined us for the picnic and for sending in the delicious food contributions. Without this support and help, these wonderful learning experiences would not be possible.

Dutch NewsISH students have experienced a lot of exciting moments since the arrival of Sinterklaas on the 17th of November! It all started with ”het zetten van de schoentjes”. All primary children sang a Sinterklaas song and put a shoe next to the chimneys in the glasshouse the next morning they found a treat placed in their shoe. Sinterklaas was really impressed with how well almost every child knows Sinterklaasliedjes by heart. It warmed his heart to see them all singing in front of the chimneys! Unfortunately, the Rommel Piet passed by and he made an incredible mess in the school. Some classrooms looked as if some type of explosion had taken place. The security guard was in absolute shock when he walked his rounds! The next big event was baking the seasonal treat ‘pepernoten’ in lower school. Each child rolled the spiced dough and at the end of the day received a bag full of warm pepernoten. The entire Hungry Mind was filled with a delicious smell. We so are very grateful to the many parents that helped to make this special activity possible for our children.Furthermore, children in lower school listened to stories and poems and did role-play pretending to be Zwarte Piet putting presents in the chimney. In upper school children learned more about the history of Sinterklaas. Other important happenings were rehearsals with Ms. Titan to provide Sinterklaasa musical welcome. Ms Titan taught some extra songs to ensure all students would be able to receive their Pieten Diploma after completing their special PE course provided by Mr Alex. During these PE lessons they had to demonstrate their athletic capabilities. There were some very able climbers amongst the children, very useful if you are a Piet! It is entirely possible that Sinterklaas could ask some of the students to help him with delivering presents next year. Perhaps these athletic children will be selected to assist with putting presents in chimneys! The last and most important event was of course the arrival of Sinterklaas on his horse ‘’ Amerigo’’ and his “Zwarte Pieten at school!! Sint told us he wants to thank everybody for the warm welcome he received and he is already looking forward to his return next year!
