SITUATIONS PASSING AGE TENAges eleven to twenty-one

Situation One: Ouch!Ouch! Sarah took a spill off her skateboard! She was ollie-ing off of her schools steps and she landed on her arm. The mild abrasion was treated with a good wash with soap. This cleaned the epidermis. In around 3-4 days it will scab over and if Sarah leaves the scab alone then there will be less of a chance of scarring. If she fell harder on the pavement or on glass, the dermis would be scraped. An important role of the integumentary system is to be a waterproof, padding to cushion the deep tissues and muscles. Other functions are regulating tempera-ture in your body, and serve as a place for your sensory receptors to attach. That makes your body able to detect pain, sensation, temperature, and pres-sure. The layer of the integumentary system is the dermis, the hair follicle, the hair, sebaceous gland, sweat gland, epidermis. Skin color is produced mainly by the substance melanin which is produced in cells called melanocytes. A first degree burn is similar to getting sunburn. Its not a horrible burn because it doesn't go through your epider-mis. Its on top of the skin. A second degree burn, burns through the epidermis and into the dermis. A third degree burn burns through the dermis to the bone.

Situation Two: Skin CareDuring the ages 9 to 17 the human sebaceous gland is going crazy! The gland is what differs the hair follicle and the epidermis. This gland tends to get clogged

with oils because of the hormones raging during this age. When clogged with oils the gland swells and creates a pimple. When clogged with dirt the clogged pore becomes a blackhead. Andro-gens are known for the sebum excretion. The skins surface be-

comes red and irri-tated. During the time of this irritation our son wants to clear things up! To do so he used a wash consisting of sodium laureth sulfate, propylene gly-col, triethanolamine and glycerine. This product will be cleansing the pores and washing the extra oils and dirt off of the faces and out of the glands where it is unnecessary to make a better, clearer appear-ing complexion.

In this picture you can see that there is only one difference between the male and female endo-crine system!

Situation Three: Birds and BeesAfter going through all the necessary precautions of break outs, comes the precau-tions of puberty and sex. Describing this to a child can be uncomfortable but in every way necessary. We will be going over the reproductive system and what can come from it. Going over this includes the prostate, testicles, vagina, uterous, em-bria. Describing things like periods and what happens to boys and girls as they grow into men and woman will be a lovely talk with our children. During the time of sexual intercourse is taking place the male genitalia begins to create the semen made to fertilize the egg in the woman. Once one of the semen molecules attaches to the egg to begin the fertilization process, the woman is pregnant. After this be-gins her first trimester of pregnancy also starting the fertilization of the egg. This creates the embryo, or the baby baby! From this the mother develops a bump onto the stomach to show her baby! This baby begins to develop, getting bigger and bigger. The baby begins to process food and develop basic necessities on its own. Like eating and breathing. The baby eventually develops to a fetus, making move-ments and showing signs of living.

In this picture you can see the front view of the male and female re-productive systems. In the woman’s you can see things like the vagina, where the penis is inserted to conceive the baby and the uterus, where the baby is carried during pregnancy.

Situation Four: Raging HormonesThree of the major endocrine glands are, Pituitary gland, Pancreas, Ovary (only in females). The pituitary gland produces different hormones. Some are Prolac-tin, ACTH, Growth horomone, FSH and LH, and ADH. Prolactin is one of the most important hormones. Prolactin stimulates the breast milk production and controls menstrual periods. The Pancreas produces insulin. Thats so im-portant for your body. Insulin is released into your body by beta cells. The role of the insulin is to lower the glucose in your body. The ovaries are important because they produce oestrogen and progesterone. These are important during periods. Oestrogen helps the body before the period happens. Progesterone helps the body after. Endocrine glands are stimulated by other systems in the body and the hormones they release. Negative feedback would be if a system doesn't accept or understand the hormone that is coming to them.

In this picture you can see the Pituitary gland. This is the gland in the brain that stores all the humans hormones.
